RCCG Sunday School Students Manual February 4th, 2018 Lesson 23 — Christianity And Socialisation

TOPIC: Christianity And Socialisation [Sunday, 4th February 2018]

MEMORY VERSE: Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.”Philippians 4:5

BIBLE PASSAGE: 1 Corinthians 6:12-13

12 All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.

13 Meats for the belly, and the belly for meats: but God shall destroy both it and them. Now the body is not for fornication, but for the Lord; and the Lord for the body.

INTRODUCTION:

To socialise simply means “to talk to and do things with other people in a friendly way”. There are various ways of socialising, ranging from relating with people in the immediate environment, to getting involved in governance and community development activities. Christian socialisation cuts across recreation, social interaction, cultural activities and political issues. While there may be diverse opinions on the extent of the involvement of Christians In social issues, it should be noted that moderation should be the watch word.

LESSON OUTLINES

1. Biblical instances of socialisation

2. Worldly perspective verses biblical perspectives

BIBLICAL INSTANCES OF SOCIALISATION

Jesus Christ and His disciples attended a wedding ceremony at Cana of Galilee (John 2:1-2). He dined with Zacchaeus in his house (Luke 19:5). He was a friend to the family of Lazarus, Mary and Martha (Luke 10:38-42) and also paid them condolence visit (John 11:33-35). He and His disciples also participated in the Feast of Passover (Mark 14:12-14; Exodus 12:24-27). Apostel Paul interacted with diverse classes of people for the sake of the Gospel in order to win some (1Corinthians 9:19-23). Daniel was involved in the political administration of land in his days (Daniel 1:18-21; 6:1-3).

WORLDLY PERSPECTIVE VERSES BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVES

Christians cannot live in isolation in this present world. However, we must know when and how to draw the line between worldly (sinful) and acceptable (holy) socialisations.

For instance, Christians are expected to recreate (1Timothy 4:8) but visiting bar/beer joints and night clubs for recreation are unacceptable. Christians should avoid participating or feasting at occasions where idols are celebrated (1Corinthians 10:28). Modernised carnivals with satanic undertones and other places where Christian integrity is questionable should also be avoided (1Corinthians 8:10-11; 10:19-21). Watching of immoral movies, listening to/singing of ungodly music and wearing seductive apparels in the name of socialisation are also ungodly things Christians must avoid (Philippians 4:5; 1Corinthians 8:8-11).

While getting involved in secular activities, Christians should watch out and abstain from things that can make them compromise their faith (Philippians 4:8).

CONCLUSION:

Whatsoever we do to socialise should be to the glory of God and edification of the saints (1Corinthians 10:31). Christians are to show moderation in social interactions.

QUESTIONS:

1. Mention three biblical instances of socialisation.

2. Distinguish between worldly and godly socialisations.

Sunday School Hymn

1. O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
O how I love Thee well,
I am happy, it makes me glad
To rejoice at Thy birth.

2. O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day, Thy friendship suits me well,
Both young and old will sing Thy song,
We long for Sunday School.

3. O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
Christ was Thy first teacher,
The Holy Spirit, great teacher,
Does manifest in thee.

4. O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
This testimony is sure,
That God, the Father Almighty,
Poured His blessing on Thee.

5. O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
Though the sun be so bright,
Or if the clouds black with rain,
I’ll be in Sunday School.

6. O Sunday School, on the Lord’s day,
I rejoice to see Thee,
Will thou pass over me today?
Without my being blest?

Ken Hemphill

Ken Hemphill, a former Southern Baptist Convention seminary president, will be nominated for SBC president, a coalition of Southern Baptists has announced. The other nominee is North Carolina pastor J.D. Greear.

Louisiana Baptist Convention will nominate the 69-year-old Hemphill, an administrator at North Greenville University, to follow Pastor Steve Gaines as SBC president, according to Baptist Press.

“We desire to elect a man who is a Southern Baptist through and through, values our understanding of the Gospel, and, has an established record of affirming the cooperative work of our local churches through the associations, state conventions and national entities,” LBC executive director David Hankins was quoted as saying.

He added, “We sought Ken out because of his record in these areas as well as his impeccable character, remarkable breadth of experience in Southern Baptist life, passion for missions and evangelism, and an active ministry of revitalization to pastors and churches.”

Hemphill also spoke about his nomination. “I think there has been an erosion of how local churches, associations, state conventions and the national convention really function together in every dimension of the Great Commission,” he was quoted as saying.

SpaceX Finally Prepares For Falcon Heavy Launch

SpaceXThe Falcon Heavy Rocket is set to lift-off on Feb. 6

After more than half a decade of redesigns and delays, SpaceX is now ready to launch its new Falcon Heavy rocket into space. The private rocket company is preparing for the maiden flight of its most powerful rocket to date which is scheduled to be held next week.

Last week the company successfully conducted a static test firing of the rocket, firing all 27 of its engines. It created a towering exhaust plume and jolting the space coast with over 5 million pounds of thrust – the most powerful engine test ever conducted at Kennedy Space Center. With a successful lift-off, the rocket will be the most powerful launch vehicle in the world.

Space enthusiasts are already flooding to Florida to watch the historic launch. At Cape Canaveral, the nearby Visitor Complex has already sold out of its close launch viewing spots for the date of the launch which is set for Tuesday, Feb. 6. SpaceX will attempt to launch the Falcon Heavy rocket from Space Launch Complex 39A during a three-hour window opening at 1:30 PM Eastern.

Among the notable attendees of the launch is Apollo 11 astronaut Buzz Aldrin, who himself launched from the same platform back in 1969. Actor Harrison Ford will also be present at the launch, the rocket having been named after Han Solo’s ship in “Star Wars.”

Those who are unable to witness the event live in Florida can tune in to a livestream of the launch. CEO Elon Musk has been encouraging people to view the launch.

Despite the huge fanfare at the site, it doesn’t guarantee the rocket will successfully fulfill its mission….

Why Pastors Should Use More Historical Illustrations in Sermons  — Sam Rainer

Sermon illustrations are tricky. You try to be funny, but you’re corny. You try to be inspirational, but you’re cheesy. You try to be serious, and you have a booger in your nose. Sermon illustrations are the flavoring to the meat of the text. Without them, you’re bland. But too much, and you’re overbearing. A few weeks ago, I posted about the different types of sermon illustrations. In this post, I’ll focus on historical illustrations. Likely, you need more historical illustrations in your sermons, not less. Most of us preachers tend to use real-life examples, current news, pop culture, or biblical examples more than historical illustrations.

“Saturday Night Specials” Versus When Pastors Really Prepare — Eric Geiger

“Saturday night special” is preacher slang for a sermon that is half-baked on Saturday night, the day before the sermon is delivered. Most pastors have been forced into a “Saturday night special” at some point in their ministry. Tragedy may strike the congregation and there is no time to prepare during the week. Or a major event in culture may prompt the pastor to scrap the sermon and start from scratch on Saturday night. But living from “Saturday night special” to “Saturday night special” isn’t a wise way to live or a wise way to feed the people of God.

Christian marriage group respond to civil partnerships for heterosexual couples proposal

Although the latter of those proposals has been widely commended, Coalition for Marriage Chairman, Colin Hart says: “Extending civil partnerships to unmarried couples will profoundly undermine marriage. It will be seen as a low commitment form of the institution – a sort of marriage lite.”

The proposals would also mean traditionally-married couples would not be given a marriage certificate on the day and there would be an electronic register instead of an official one in churches.

Colin Hart added in a statement: “While denying couples a marriage certificate on their happy day does nothing to modernise the institution of marriage, or support husbands and wives, it just seems mean spirited. “

Speaking of how extension of civil partnerships still only helps couples, he commented: “This scheme will do nothing to solve the real cases of hardship amongst family members such as two sisters who live together for company and to share the bills.”

However, many Christians favour the move as they say it leaves traditional marriage for those who to want to honour God with their union, whilst non-religious couples would no longer have to pretend to in traditional services.

Civil Partnerships provide legal and financial protection in the case of a split and don’t necessarily come with any religious connotations.

The law, proposed by Tim Loughton MP, is being reviewed by…

New Apple Chip to Power Up Three Upgraded Macs This Year, Reports Say

Reuters/Beck DiefenbachA guest points to a MacBook Pro during an Apple media event in Cupertino, California, U.S.

Apple may have decided to forego a full-blown upgrade to its Macbook Pro model for 2018, but that does not stop the tech giant from stepping up the processors of its current designs.

According to a report from Bloomberg, this year, Apple will start using co-processors in at least three devices, which would include both laptops and desktops. It is yet unclear which of the many Apple models will get this new chip, but reports say MacBook Pro and Mac Pro are the best candidates.

Following the recent issues of Intel processors with Meltdown and Spectre, Apple is hoping to take full control of its hardware to do away with these problems all together.

Apple’s first step into this system is to put in a new custom chip in three macOS devices that will be released this year. As there are no new Mac lineups for 2018, Apple will most likely choose among its top devices for the upgrade.

At this stage, it may be too late to overhaul the hardware and replace the Intel-designed CPU, so the chip will instead work as co-processors, and should make the device more stable and more secure.

For better marketing, the Apple-made chip would also bring new features to the chosen models. For example, Apple could extend the general graphics capabilities of the MacBook Pro through dedicated GPUs as well as graphical chips. This way, even though it is not entirely a new model, the device should be able to get sales boost with its “new”…
