Are we getting closer to our Sunday schools being regulated?

Amanda Spielman, the chief inspector, criticised the Church of England for opposing the idea and insisted new legislation was necessary to monitor “what is happening under the radar in so-called out-of-school provision”.

Speaking at the Church of England’s Foundation for Educational Leadership annual conference, she called on ministers to update legislation and give Ofsted more powers to regulate settings where children are educated outside of school hours.

The new head warned that intervention in places such as Sunday schools and Bible clubs was needed due to ensure “the small minority of settings that promote extremism are not able to evade scrutiny”.

The proposals were first made under former Prime Minister David Cameron’s government but a personal intervention by the Archbishop of Canterbury and a group of crossparty MPs, who labelled the proposals “bewildering” in 2016, halted the plans.

However, the head of Ofsted insisted regulating Sunday school classes won’t lead to “a troop of inspectors turning up at Sunday schools”.

The Department for Education wanted to force institutions teaching under-19s for more than six hours a week to register with the government.

Spielman added: “If we are to protect many of the tenets that the Church holds dear, we need the power to tackle those trying to use education to undermine…

Bishop rejects cosmetic surgery culture and encourages schools to give children affirmation

Speaking of the inundation of ‘perfection’ in our culture, Bishop Steven told Premier: “You can’t turn on the television, you can’t drive a hundred yards down the road… without being bombarded with these images of what humanity is ‘supposed’ to look like and I think it’s very hard not to be effected by that – particularly for young people.”

The bishop had been speaking at an event for leading head teachers where he said schools should teach children to look beyond the culture of cosmetic surgery, fast cars and designer labels.

He said: “These things play and feed on that and we need to recognise that that’s not the way we find acceptance.”

Bishop Steven said he was very sympathetic with young people feeling these pressures and added: “I think schools have a part to play in sharing and instilling young people with a different narrative.”

When asked what does fulfil us he said: “What we human beings need more than anything else is the knowledge that we are loved – the knowledge that we are loved just because we are – not because of what we look like, not because of what we’ve achieved.

“One hopes that every human being receives that unconditional ‘we love you just because you are’ in the home but sadly we know that doesn’t happen for everybody.”

“If you’re not receiving that unconditional love and affirmation in the home you need to receive it somewhere else – that’s…

Cause-Oriented Groups Call for Release of Killer Whale

REUTERS/Mike BlakeAn Orca killer whale is seen underwater at the animal theme park SeaWorld in San Diego, California March 19, 2014.

Cause-oriented groups are calling for the release of the so-called talking killer whale that has charmed social media users recently.

While Wikie, the 16-year-old female orca, has fascinated the netizens with its apparent ability to mimic words, such as “hello” and “bye,” cause-oriented groups have called on the release of the creature to its natural habitat.

“She is certainly further proof that these are highly intelligent mammals whose captivity in marine parks in the 21st century should come to an end,” Claire Bass, UK director of the Humane Society International, said in an interview with Sky News.

According to Bass, Wikie is a painful reminder that, while animals can swim free in the wild and communicate with one another using their complex language and or group-specific dialects, they are denied of their natural communication because of their captivity.

It is not only the Humane Society International that thinks animals like Wikie have been deprived of their own “culture and a unique group dialect,” though. For PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals), subjecting Wikie and other animals to a research is simply wrong on many accounts and is made for the wrong reasons.

“They’re imprisoned and denied everything that’s natural and important to them in order to make money from tourists. If we had the intelligence to understand her own sophisticated language, we would hear her calling to be free,” PETA director Elisa Allen said.

    Wikie is considered to…

An astonishing Holocaust story I just discovered

Yesterday I discovered one of the most extraordinary stories I’ve ever encountered. Before I share it with you, I need to set the context.

The Polish Senate passed a bill Thursday making it illegal to claim Poland was complicit in Nazi atrocities committed on Polish soil during World War II. Violations would be punishable by up to three years in prison. The bill awaits a presidential signature to become law; Polish President Andrzej Duda has indicated that he intends to sign it.

There is no question that the Holocaust camps in Poland were operated by the Nazis, not the Poles. It is also true that the Polish people were horrifically victimized by Nazi Germany: at least 1.5 million were deported to Germany for forced labor; hundreds of thousands were imprisoned in concentration camps; at least 1.9 million were killed during the war.

But the new bill criminalizes any claim that the Polish people were in any way complicit in crimes against the Jewish people. What is the verdict of history? How is the question related to the astounding story I’ll tell shortly?

Poland, the Allies, and the Holocaust

Yad Vashem, Israel’s official memorial to Holocaust victims, recognizes thousands of Polish people as “Righteous Among the Nations,” non-Jews who “took great risks to save Jews during the Holocaust.”

Tragically, there were others who were not righteous. As Jonathan Tobin notes, “Anti-Semitism was endemic in pre-Holocaust Poland. Many, if not most Poles were largely indifferent to the fate of their Jewish compatriots.”

In addition, historian Jan Gross records the massacre of hundreds of Jews by their Polish neighbors in 1941. In 1946, forty-two Jews were killed by police and townspeople in Kielce, Poland.

These atrocities seem to contradict the government’s claim that the Polish people were in no way complicit in persecuting the Jews. My focus, however, is primarily on those in Poland and around the world who were aware of the Holocaust but…

Officials reverse threat to close house churches

According to Christian charity Barnabus Fund, local officials in Abbottabad demanded that six house churches be closed because of alleged security threats in mid-January.

Arshad Nayer, a local pastor, had said: “Instead of providing security for the said churches, the administration has found it convenient to shut them down.”

The order triggered protests from Christians in the area.

Abbottabad is known to be a hub for jihadists. The charity said the area is near where Osama Bin Laden was found to have spent years hiding.

Earlier this week, the provincial government overturned its decision to force the closure of the churches.

Christian leaders in the area have said they’ve received a verbal pledge that they would be allowed to continue meeting amd they expect a written statement soon.

Christian charity builds over 100 earthquake-resilient homes

Tearfund said they were one of the first agencies to start building permanent, earthquake-resilient shelters in the Makwanpur region of Nepal.

The charity began building following the 2015 earthquake, which killed nearly 9,000 people, injured 22,000 and left millions homeless.

With Nepal positioned in a zone of high seismic activity, the charity said it must help residents “prepare for the worst, and hope for the best”.

Douwe Dijkstra, Tearfund’s Country Director in Nepal explained: “It’s impossible to predict when Nepal will experience another serious earthquake, but there’s a lot that we can do to prepare for it and be ready.

“Over the past three years, we’ve been working with the most vulnerable in the community to fix the damage done to homes, water supplies, toilet facilities, and livelihoods.

“It’s as much about reducing the risk of another earthquake hitting people so hard as it is about recovery.”

Working with local authorities and alongside partner organisations, the project has included the design and distribution of blueprints for earthquake resistant housing, which can be replicated in other parts of the country.

Thuli Maya, a 78-year-old widow whose original home collapsed in the earthquake, was one of the first people to move from a temporary shelter into her new home.

“My old house was only made of mud and stone, but this house has layers of concrete…

Churches join call for Manchester United to address ‘grotesque’ differences in pay

Community leaders, unions and churches are backing a call for the club to increase the pay of workers employed by contractors, such as waitresses and cleaners.

The club said it pays permanent employees the Voluntary Living Wage, which is higher than the statutory national figure.

Manchester Citizens will hand in a letter on Thursday to the club, urging it to take a “community-first business approach” to ensure the cost of living is met for low-paid workers.

The group, part of the Citizens UK charity, said if new signing Alexis Sanchez is paid £400,000 a week, as some have reported, it will take him just 82 minutes in a game to earn the annual salary of a low-paid stadium worker.

Sanchez’s pay, and millions reportedly given to his agent, reveals a “grotesque tale of two halves”, with some staff on £7 an hour, said the group.

Group chairman the Reverend Ian Rutherford, City Centre Minister at Methodist Central Hall, Manchester, said: “As the winter transfer window closes many workers at Old Trafford will be choosing between putting the heating on or a hot meal.

“We’ve heard many stories about the real cost of life on low pay for workers at Old Trafford, many of whom are employed directly and struggling to live with dignity.

“We are calling on Manchester United, which already makes such a positive contribution to the UK economy, to show leadership by recognising the…
