Overcoming Mission Drift in Your Church – Rainer on Leadership #403

Podcast Episode #403

An inward focus often leads to an unhealthy church. Unhealthy churches drift from their mission. Today, we discuss how to combat mission drift.

Some highlights from today’s episode include:

  • If a church just does the status quo, the natural tendency will be to move inwardly.
  • You have to be highly intentional if you want your church to move outwardly.
  • Too many church members have an erroneous understanding of biblical church membership.
  • Discipleship is more than merely learning information.

The six keys to overcoming mission drift are:

  1. The church’s focus moves increasingly inwardly
  2. One of the most troubling trends is the church is about me, myself and I
  3. Re-examine what it means to be a part of the body of Christ
  4. Re-examine what it means to function in a healthy manner
  5. The principle of two a year
  6. The principle of ruthless evaluation

Christian teacher sacked after telling lesbian student of God’s love sues Bristol college

Experienced educator Svetlana Powell was dismissed by leaders at the T2 apprenticeship academy who said that her comments were offensive to some students, and she could not control her class.

Bristol Employment Tribunal heard on Thursday that a pupil, who was being disruptive, question Mrs Powell on variety of controversial issues, including evolution.

Asked about her views on homosexuality, she told students that she personally believed the homosexuality was against the will of God, but that He loves everyone.

After being told one of the pupils in the room was a lesbian, Mrs Powell replied that God loved her. Mrs Powell has been teaching the class in late July 2016 on behalf of an absent colleague.

Sian Prigg, the Academy’s Chief Safeguarding Officer, told the Tribunal a number of students complained that they were “brainwashed and preached to” during the incident.

Mrs Prigg she decided to contact a local coordinator for Prevent – the government’s ‘counter-terrorism’ strategy – to report what had happened.

Legal representatives from the Christian Legal Centre, which is supporting Mrs Powell, say she was sacked “because her views are Christian”.

Barrister, Andrea Williams said: “We are seeing a worrying trend of cases such as this.

“The fact that Svetlana was reported to Prevent for holding Christian views is a sign of our times.

“It shows how Prevent will be used to punish innocent and soft targets.

Joyce Meyer’s Daily 2 February 2018 Devotional: God Opens and Shuts Doors

Joyce Meyer's Daily 2 February 2018 Devotional: God Opens and Shuts Doors

Topic: God Opens and Shuts Doors [Joyce Meyer’s Daily Friday February 2nd, 2018]

Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is within you, whom you have [received as a gift] from God, and that you are not your own [property]? — 1 Corinthians 6:19

There are critical times in our lives when we especially need to know we are hearing clearly from God. It isn’t always easy to know His voice from that of our own emotional reasoning. But I know from experience that God can open doors of opportunity that no one can close, and He can also close doors that we cannot open.

I spent many years trying to make things happen that I wanted to do in life. The result was frustration and disappointment. But I found that when we depend on God, He will give us favor and make things easy for us as we seek Him and His perfect timing. He leads us one step at a time. If you take one step forward in the wrong direction, He will let you know before you go too far.

Be aware that His thoughts are above your thoughts. He sees the end from the beginning. All His ways are right and sure. He knows what makes sense for your life and He can make it happen. Listen to His voice, and you will not be deceived.

Prayer Starter: God, I trust You to open the right doors in my life and shut the wrong ones. Even when I don’t know what to do, I have faith that I can hear from You and follow Your will.

Memorise: And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. – John 8:32

Read: John 8:32-44 (KJV)

32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

33 They answered him, We be Abraham’s seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?

34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.

35 And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever.

36 If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.

37 I know that ye are Abraham’s seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you.

38 I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that which ye have seen with your father.

39 They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham’s children, ye would do the works of Abraham.

40 But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham.

41 Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.

42 Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.

43 Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word.

44 Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

Bible In One Year: Exodus 29-30, Matthew 22:1-22

MESSAGE:

There are two sides to every coin, and in life, there are always two sides to everything. It is either you are greedy or generous; hardworking or lazy; truthful or a liar; a child of God or a child of the devil. There is no sitting on the fence. A lie can be defined as anything other than the truth. What is the truth? Several passages of the Bible use Jesus as a synonym for the truth. For example, John 8:32 says:

“And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

Jesus (The Truth) sets free, but the devil (father of all liars according to John 8:44) puts in bondage. Every time you speak the truth, it is proof that Jesus lives in you, and He will make you free. Whereas whenever you lie, you are giving the devil an invitation to put you in bondage. Remember, in life there is no sitting on the fence, you are either for the truth (Jesus) or for the lie (Satan).

Key Point: Choose your side wisely.

Hymn 7:

1. I am Thine 0 Lord, I have heard Thy voice,
And it told Thy love to me;
But I long to rise in the arms of faith
And be closer drawn to Thee.

Draw me nearer, nearer blessed Lord
To the cross where Thou hast died;
Draw me nearer, nearer, nearer blessed Lord,
To Thy precious, bleeding side.

2. Consecrate me now to Thy service, Lord,
By the pow’r of grace divine;
Let my soul look up with a steadfast hope,
And my will be lost in Thine.

3. Oh, the pure delight of a single hour
That before Thy throne I spend,
When I kneel in prayer, and with Thee, my God
I commune as friend with friend!

4. There are depths of love that I cannot know
Till I cross the narrow sea;
There are heights of joy that I may not reach
Till I rest in peace with Thee.
