Religious order has shown ‘sceptical attitude’

John Scott QC, representing In Care Abuse Survivors (Incas), said the Daughters of Charity of St Vincent de Paul had shown a “sceptical attitude” amid claims of historical abuses at Smyllum Park orphanage in Lanark.

While he accused the order of being more interested in its previous “good name”, the Daughters of Charity later insisted their apology was “unqualified and unequivocal”.

The statements came as Scotland’s Child Abuse Inquiry heard some of the practices alleged to have taken place “might well amount to a crime in Scots law”, if proven.

Inquiry chair Lady Smith heard submissions in Edinburgh on Tuesday from core participants to the probe after 20 days of evidence about institutions run by the order, namely Smyllum and Bellevue House in Rutherglen.

Almost 50 former residents have testified about mistreatment they say they suffered at the hands of nuns and staff, particularly at Smyllum, which closed in 1981.

The Daughters of Charity has previously issued written and verbal statements to the inquiry and the probe has also heard apologies from senior figures now in charge of the order.

However, Mr Scott told Lady Smith: “Unfortunately it seems to many survivors that they have not been heard by the Daughters of Charity whose sceptical attitude continues to pervade their official response.”

He said he had no doubt the upset of the senior nuns was genuine but…

Charities urge Theresa May to challenge China on Christian crackdown

The prime minister’s visit to China from 31st January to 2nd February comes as new restrictions on churches are due to come into force this week. The rules will impact those which aren’t registered with the Government.

Andre Boyd with Release International told Premier persecution against Christians in the country has become dire.

“The government wants all churches to be registered, by that, they want to control them. They want to control the appointment of pastors; they want to control what these churches will teach,” he said.

“In all conscience some Christians simply can’t do that. Christians who are not part of the official system under the government control are being branded as evil cults.”

In Yunnan Province, six members of an unregistered church group were sentenced to up to 13 years in prison for ‘using an evil cult to organize to undermine law enforcement’ this month.

Also this month, Chinese authorities in Shanxi Province demolished the 50,000-member Golden Lampstand (Jindengtai) Church using dynamite, and two pastors in Guizhou, one of whom is in prison, were fined over $1 million for collecting ‘illegal’ donations from members of the congregation.

Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW) said while talks about expanding trade are important, they shouldn’t come at the expense of challenging Chinese leaders on their treatment of…

Was the Super Blue Blood Moon a Sign of the End Times?

Was the Super Blue Blood Moon a Sign of the End Times?

This morning, January 31, many people enjoyed the unique sight of the super blue blood moon that graced the skies.

As ChristianHeadlines.com previously reported, supermoons occur when the moon is closer to the earth in its rotation, making it appear bigger than usual. A supermoon will appear up to 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter. The “blue” part occurs due to Earth’s dark shadow.

This rare occurrence has many Christians speculating that it could be a sign of the end times.

“Christians believe the upcoming super blue blood moon which will dazzle the skies [on January 31,] along with the supermoon that kicked off the year on January 1, are signs from God that 2018 will be a ‘biblical’ year, as it also marks the 70th anniversary of the birth of Israel,” notes Express.

Unsealed.org further explains: “If the Great American Eclipse was the darkened sun piece of the puzzle, perhaps this blood moon is the missing piece, which could mean the Day of the LORD begins soon, perhaps even this year. What makes this Super-Blue-Blood Moon even more amazing is that approximately two-thirds of the world’s population will be able to see some or all of the total phase of the eclipse.

However, Jennifer LeClaire, writing for ., acknowledges that, while we should recognize what is going on in the world, we should also remember that no one can predict Christ’s…

Fresh details on Bishop George Bell triggers new investigation

The Church of England’s National Safeguarding Team said it received fresh information concerning the former Bishop of Chichester, who died 60 years ago.

The new information, which has not been disclosed to the public, comes after the publication of the Carlile Review, which found the Church was too quick to accept the allegations of the Bishop Bell’s complainant “without serious investigation or inquiry”.

The Church of England said the new information “is now being considered through the Core Group and in accordance with Lord Carlile’s recommendations”.

The Church added: “The Core Group is now in the process of commissioning an independent investigation in respect of these latest developments.”

Sussex Police have been notified about the new development and the Church said it will work collaboratively with them.

Claims made by a woman known only as “Carol” of abuse by Bishop Bell when she was aged between five and eight in the 1950s led the Church to issue an apology and pay £15,000 in compensation.

However, the inquiry was widely criticised for failing to investigate the victim’s claims or seek witnesses who had known or worked for Bishop Bell during his tenure as Bishop of Chichester between 1929 and 1958.

In Kenya, Debt-ridden Christian Universities Struggle to Stay Open

In Kenya, Debt-ridden Christian Universities Struggle to Stay Open

Facing overwhelming debt, one Christian university in Kenya has been ordered to shut its doors as students and professors at two others are wondering whether they could be next.

The nation’s acting education secretary directed the Presbyterian University of East Africa on Thursday (Jan. 25) to start dismantling, revealing for many in this East African country how financial mismanagement and poorly planned growth was undermining not only Presbyterian University, but two other Christian institutions of higher education in Kenya as well.

While Presbyterian University hopes to yet save itself, concern is also focused on the Catholic University of Eastern Africa and Kenya Methodist University. Both have a year to show a government commission that they have restructured and can ensure future financial stability.

The debt problems plaguing these universities have upset not only those enrolled and employed by them, but ordinary citizens in this predominantly Christian country who had hoped for better from the universities’ leaders.

“As a church institution, I thought it would adopt the best management practice,” said David Nene, a Presbyterian taxi driver who often shuttled people to the university that faces imminent closure.

But the Rev. Julius Mwamba, the moderator of Presbyterian Church of East Africa, which owns the university, said its challenges can be…

Captured nun pleads for Pope’s help in new video

A video of Gloria Cecilia Narváez was released by the group Jama’a Nusrat ul-Islam wa al-Muslimin and intercepted by SITE Intel Group, a group which monitors jihadist activity.

The Colombian’s appeal was translated into English as saying: “I ask you to help with my freedom and do the impossible and get them to release me.”

Local church leader, Bishop Jean-Baptiste Tiama told the Fides news agency: “We have seen the video and we are happy to know she is alive and this urges us to continue our prayers and efforts for her release.”

Sister Gloria was taken captive in the Mali – close to the border of Burkina Faso – on 7th February 2017.

She was accused by the group, whose named translates as the Group to Support Islam and Muslims, of “preaching Christianity and supporting the crusaders in Mali”.

World Watch Monitor

One member suggested that relatives of Sister Gloria should send money to pay for a ransom and hinted that other hostages were also being held.

Jama’a Nusrat ul-Islam wa al-Muslimin has been blamed for a recent spate of attacks across Mali, including a shooting at a Radisson Blu hotel in the capital Bamako in November 2015 which left 20 people dead.
