Moody Bible Institute is one of the oldest Bible colleges in the nation. Recently, the school has been called into question after allegations surfaced that there is a pervasive if subtle culture of racist attitudes on campus.

Several former African-American students shared their stories. One, identified as Micah Bournes, said that overall, neither faculty or other students ever tried to be more inclusive of minorities on campus. Furthermore, when Bournes read that the college’s student handbook “didn’t allow students to have what it called extreme or distracting hairstyles that included cornrows and dreadlocks,” he took this issue up with the Dean.

Since cornrows and dreadlocks are almost exclusively hairstyles worn by Black people, Bournes felt that the school was discriminating against him and others like him. When he brought the issue up with the Dean, he received a rather concerning response:

“The Dean told me, ‘Micah, this is the thing. We want to keep student expenses as low as possible. But many of our donors are old, wealthy, white people and they have a certain idea of what godliness looks like,” he recalled, according to Relevant Magazine. “To appease those donors we often have to move slowly.”

International Christian Concern (ICC) has learned that more than 80 Christians have been killed in Benue State, Nigeria by Fulani militants since January 1. These attacks have mainly taken place in two locations within the state, Logo and Guma Counties. Logo saw more than 50 deaths in just the first week of the new year by Fulani attacks, while Guma suffered more than 30.

These attacks took place less than two months after the state of Benue enacted an anti-open grazing bill, which prevents the Fulani from nomadically moving their cattle throughout all of Nigeria. Benue passed this law in an attempt to end the violence that has been plaguing its people, but it has failed thus far. In an interview with the Punch, the Secretary-General of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, Usman Ngelzerma, said that the new bill is the reason for these attacks. “We don’t wish for the crisis to continue but let us give it (the law) another look. We don’t like the killings; we will never condone the killing of people. Give the farmers their rights, but consider the pastoralists too.”

However, even those who were not from the area, but who were just trying to help others escape, were at the mercy of the Fulani attackers. In 2017, Kristen Day was one of relatively few women to attend both the record-breaking Women’s March, whose organizers voiced strong support for abortion rights, and the March for Life, an anti-abortion gathering a few days later.

But this year Day, a Democrat, says she’s only returning to one of them —  and it won’t be the rally that last year drew millions across the country, largely in protest over the way President Trump talked about and treated women.

“I’m not going to the Women’s March this year,” she said. “I don’t feel welcome.”

Day, a Catholic and executive director of Democrats for Life of America, explained that her decision was the result of a “bad experience” at last year’s Women’s March. She said that as the demonstration drew to a close, she was accosted by a marcher who disliked her sign, which read “Pro-life for the whole life.” The attacker allegedly began yelling and banging on her car until police eventually intervened.

Day is one of many progressives who oppose abortion while also touting left-leaning views on other issues, a position she says is increasingly tenuous in today’s polarized political climate.
