Christian evangelist Luis Palau, who has preached across the globe for five decades, says he has late-stage lung cancer.
“Everything is ready and if the Lord wants to take me home in the next few months or two years or whatever it is, I’m ready,” Palau, 83, said in a video recorded with his sons Kevin and Andrew and uploaded to YouTube.
The Argentine-born preacher, who moved to Oregon in his 20s and is based in the Portland area, said he noticed symptoms in November but thought they might indicate pneumonia until doctors ran tests.
“Just this week it was clearly confirmed. Stage 4 lung cancer,” he said in a statement posted Thursday (Jan. 18) on the Luis Palau Association website. “As you can imagine, this isn’t news we were expecting or hoping for. Yet our trust in the Lord remains rock solid.”
Palau said he currently feels “fine” and is full of energy and asked for prayers as he and his family face treatment decisions that he expects will limit his preaching and traveling schedule.
But he said he remains confident in the longevity of his ministry, which includes his son Kevin as president, son Andrew as an evangelist and son Keith on the development team.

The body of a pastor in southern India was found hung from the thatched roof of his house early Saturday morning (Jan. 20), a week after he complained to police about opposition from Hindu extremists, sources said.
Congregation members said they found the body of pastor Gideon Periyaswamy of Maknayeem Church hanging from a rope in his one-room house beside the church building in Adayachery village, Kanchipuram District, but that his knees were bent stiff, as if others had placed him in the noose after his death. He was 43.
A convert from Hinduism 25 years ago, Pastor Periyaswamy was single and served as pastor in Adayachery for more than 12 years, his close friend, pastor Azariah Reuben, told Morning Star News.
“The local Hindus were not happy with growing Christianity,” Pastor Reuben said. “They had several times tried to stop the ministry.”
At pastors’ meetings and on other occasions, Pastor Periyaswamy spoke of Hindu hostilities to his church services and requested prayer, he said. Pastor Reuben said that Pastor Periyaswamy once remarked, “I have no problem – if needed, if the Lord permits it, I would die as martyr for Christ, but the ministry should not stop.”

According to Christian religious freedom charity China Aid, they interrupted the church’s service in the Ningxia region and told worshippers that they had conducted religious activities in a non-government approved building, which was illegal.
The person that led the service, Lou Siping, told the charity: “After their arrival, they first asked 30 of us to take out our ID cards and register them. We cooperated and registered them. Then, the police took us to the station for investigation.
“They said our church did not go to the National Religious Affairs Bureau to register, violating the regulations, and must be stopped immediately.”
Siping said he reminded the investigators about China’s Constitution which promises religious freedom, but said he was repeatedly told that they gathered unlawfully.
Authorities also contacted the church’s landlord and demanded the cancellation of the church’s lease.
China Aid said the Christians were threatened with coercive measures if they fail to vacate the building the next day.
It’s been reported that officials also ordered that the church to join the Three-Self Patriotic Movement, a Christian offshoot of the government that allows authorities to police church services.

Three individual lunar occurrences are happening all at once on January 31, making it one event that does not happen very often.
Dubbed as the “super blue blood moon,” the rare event will feature a trifecta of interactions the moon has with the earth and the sun. With the blue moon, super moon, and blood moon happening all at the same time, there is no denying that the evening of January 31 this year is a date worth anticipating.
To the uninitiated, the term “blue moon” has nothing to do with the color of the celestial body. The term is used in reference to a calendar month having two full moons, which only happens every 2.7 years. As January 2018 already had its first full moon on the first day of the year, and will have its second one on January 31, hence, the blue moon.
Super moon, on the other hand, happens when the the moon is closest to earth during a full moon. It is during this time when the moon appears slightly bigger and brighter than the usual full moon, roughly 30 percent brighter and 14 percent bigger. Despite the increase in its size and brightness, the difference it has with a regular full moon is hard to notice unless someone is a careful moon-watcher, experts claim.
Meanwhile, blood moon is the term used in reference to the color of the moon as it undergoes a total lunar eclipse. While the term is not scientific, it aptly describes the coppery-reddish glow of the celestial body during an eclipse.

Christian legal group ADF International has filed an expert brief with the European Court of Human Rights in support of the man known as A.A. (anonymised for security reasons).
ADF said if he is sent back to his home country he could face severe social and formal persecution, with punishments ranging from lengthy imprisonment to death.
“International law is very clear on the fact that no country should return a refugee to territories where his or her life could be in danger,” said Jennifer Lea, Legal Counsel with ADF International.
“Afghanistan is not a safe place for a Christian convert.
“The Court should ask Switzerland to stop turning a blind eye to the situation of religious minorities in Afghanistan.”
While the Afghan Constitution protects religious freedom in general, it also defines Islam as the state religion and prohibits the enactment of any law contradicting Islamic beliefs.
ADF added that Afghanistan’s civil courts investigate “crimes against God.”
Also, crimes like apostasy, blasphemy, anti-Islamic writings or speech, and proselytising are considered serious and punishable by beheadings for males, confiscation of property, and inheritance limitations.
ADF has urged Switzerland to defend religious freedom.
