Billy Graham’s Daily 11 January 2018 Devotional: Eternity

Topic: Eternity [Billy Graham’s Daily Thursday January 11th, 2018]

What we suffer now is nothing compared to the glory he will give us later. — Romans 8:18 (TLB)

Nowhere does the Bible teach that Christians are to be exempt from the tribulations and natural disasters that come upon the world. It does teach that the Christian can face tribulation, crisis, calamity, and personal suffering with a supernatural power that is not available to the person outside Christ. The early Christians were able to experience joy in their hearts in the midst of trials, troubles, and depression.

They counted suffering for Christ not as a burden or misfortune, but as a great honor, as evidence that Christ counted them worthy to witness to Him through suffering. They never forgot what Christ Himself had gone through for their salvation; and to suffer for His name’s sake was regarded as a gift rather than a cross. Christians can rejoice in tribulation because they have eternity’s values in view. When the pressures are on, they look beyond their present predicaments to the glories of heaven. The thought of the future life with its prerogatives and joys helps to make the trials of the present seem light and transient.

Prayer for the day: Father, help me to go beyond the afflictions and tribulations of our age, and to look toward the inheritance reserved for us in heaven.

Written by Billy Graham, Founder of Billy Graham Evangelistic Association(BGEA). BGEA exists to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ by every effective means and to equip the church and others to do the same.

Arthur Rorheim, co-founder of one of the world’s leading children’s ministries that has given lifelong memories to millions, passed away last Friday at the age of 99. A memorial will be held for him later this month.

Rorheim, a youth pastor, co-founded what later became known as the evangelical Christian ministry Awana in 1941 at the North Side Gospel Center in Chicago along with senior pastor Lance Latham.

Under Rorheim’s leadership, the organization went from being a club at a church in Chicago to a weekly children’s organization present in more than 14,000 churches across 100 countries.

Despite being in his 90’s, Rorheim served Awana for over 70 years and was still active in serving as Awana president emeritus and still made visits to Awana headquarters in Streamwood, Illinois.

A memorial service in his honor has been scheduled for Jan. 27 at the Quentin Road Bible Baptist Church in Lake Zurich, Illinois at 11 a.m. Rorheim’s friend Dr. James Scudder, Sr. will officiate the service.

“Art Rorheim was a man whose influence for the kingdom of God will have a lasting impact for generations to come,” Awana CEO Valerie Bell said in a statement. “Throughout his life he tirelessly proclaimed the gospel and dedicated his life…

Indian Court Grants Pregnant Woman’s Petition to Abort 27-Week Baby

Indian Court Grants Pregnant Woman’s Petition to Abort 27-Week Baby

A high court in India has agreed to allow a woman to abort her unborn baby who has a disability.

According to LifeNews.com, the baby reportedly has heart, brain, and gastrointestinal issues. The baby’s mother requested that she be allowed to abort the baby, even though the child has reached 27 weeks gestation, which is weeks past the 20-week abortion cutoff in India.

The woman petitioned the court for the right to abort her child, and the court granted it to her, stating that having the disabled child would inflict mental trauma on the woman.

Pro-life advocates are concerned that this case could pave the way for other late-term abortions by using mental trauma as a way to get around there being a threat to the mother’s life.

“The HC had asked the woman’s lawyer Meenaz Kakalia to demonstrate if there was any threat to the mother’s life and she had responded by saying that mental trauma must be considered as part of risk to her health and life,” The Times of India reports.

“The bench appeared to agree with her as it referred to past pronouncements on women’s right to bodily integrity and applying principle of purposive interpretation of law, held that foetal malformations, their severity and the effect on women’s mental and physical health must be read into Section 5 of the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act that governs reproductive procedures in…

Atheists Want a World Without Christianity. Here’s How It Would Look

Atheists and Islamic extremists have something in common – they want a world without Christianity. These strange bedfellows believe that the world would be a better place if it was devoid of this religion started by Jesus Christ two millennia ago and counts a third of the world’s population as followers.

Expand | Collapse

But they don’t have to imagine what a ‘grand’ world it would be without Christianity, they just have to look at history during the Greco-Roman period and more recently during the 20th century.

“What was the world like before Jesus? Was that a great world?” asks Dr. Jeremiah J. Johnston, president of Christian Thinkers Society, in an interview with ChristianWeek. “There is nothing new about the ‘New Atheism’. … They are going to take us back to a pre-Christian, pagan, racist world of inequality because without God there is no humanity. Without God there are no morals.”

Johnston is the author of the new book Unimaginable: What Our World Would Be Like Without Christianity (Bethany House, December 2017), which has an astounding 31 pages of citation notes for 200 pages of reading. The professional researcher, who also serves as professor of Early Christianity at Houston Baptist University, begins the book by looking at the world before Christianity. He…

Humanists say Catholic donations to new education secretary ‘represents inappropriate influence’

As Humanists UK campaign against the involvement of religious organisations in the running of state schools, they say this money from the Catholic church “represents inappropriate influence.”

Damian Hinds, the Conservative MP for East Hampshire, supports the removal of the 50% cap on religious selection at Catholic schools, meaning he would be happy if they limited the number of non-religious pupils in favour of children from Catholic backgrounds.

Hinds’ support of Catholic schools is documented in a speech in April 2014 where he says: “If they [Catholic schools] were open to all, they would lose their distinctive character-not immediately, but over time” and “a half-Catholic school is not the same thing as a Catholic school”.

Humanists UK show that the Freedom of Information website Theyworkforyou.com reveals that Damian Hinds received: “an educational allowance of £5,116.25 and accommodation provided for an intern in my parliamentary office for 10 months” in October 2014.

The group add that Hinds is not the only one receiving money from the Catholic Bishops’ Conference, they claim Labour and the Liberal Democrats were also donated money in return for interns in their offices.

They say: “In the months prior to becoming Labour’s Shadow Schools Minister in October 2016, Mike Kane was gifted £5,218.55 by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales, also to cover the costs of a parliamentary intern for 10 months.”

They added that Lib Dem’s John…

Investors Demand Apple Combat ‘Youth Phone Addiction’ as Mental Health Risk for Kids Grows

A rising number of influential voices are sounding the alarm about the dangers of smartphone technology, as major investors in Apple urge the company to address the public health crisis of youth phone addiction.

The Wall Street Journal reported this week that Jana Partners LLC and the California State Teachers’ Retirement System, also known as Calstrs, are leveraging their influence with Apple. Together these two large shareholders, which control approximately $2 billion in company stock, submitted a letter on Saturday stressing that Apple needs to build new software tools to assist parents in limiting phone use. The letter also called on the company to further research how excessive use of smartphones impacts mental health.

“Apple can play a defining role in signaling to the industry that paying special attention to the health and development of the next generation is both good business and the right thing to do,” the shareholders’ letter reads.

“There is a developing consensus around the world including Silicon Valley that the potential long-term consequences of new technologies need to be factored in at the outset, and no company can outsource that responsibility.”

The iPhone is considered Apple’s “backbone,” the WSJ noted. The company turned a $48.35 billion profit in its most recent fiscal year, and the iPhone helped turn the business into the world’s largest publicly listed company by market value. Apple’s stock grew by 50 percent in the past year, and approximately 86 million Americans older than 13 now have an iPhone.

“The investors believe that Apple’s highflying stock could be…
