    Bishop Tells 8,000 Catholic Students to Reject ‘Anti-Intellectualism’ in Church

    The Church should reject “anti-intellectualism” when witnessing to the world, according to a bishop speaking before approximately 8,000 Catholic students.

    Auxiliary Bishop Robert Barron of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, who also founded Word on Fire Catholic Ministries, addressed a Fellowship of Catholic University Students conference in Chicago on Wednesday.

    In his remarks, Bishop Barron talked about the problem with St. Francis’ famous statement “preach the Gospel and when necessary use words.”

    Barron spoke of having a “cordial dislike” of the phrase and argued that according to at least one scholar, Francis likely never said the often quoted remark.

    Rocker Ozzy Osbourne Visits Ark Encounter and Has Shocking Reaction


    English rock-and-roll singer and TV celebrity, Ozzy Osbourne and his son Jack recently visited the Bible-based Ark Encounter in Kentucky.


    The visit was filmed as part of their current television show Ozzy and Jack’s World Detour. The pair visit various locations around the world as they “reconnect” as father and son and share their experiences on the show.


    When the World Detour contacted the Ark Encounter, the museum directors were careful to discuss the show’s intentions. The museum leadership were reassured that it would be an honest encounter with the exhibit and not an attack on Christian beliefs. They were pleased to have the duo come. (Knowing that Ozzy has a reputation for pushing the envelope in behavior and language, the museum did encourage viewer discretion with the promotions of the segment.)


    The Ark Encounter is part of Answers In Genesis which describes itself as an “apologetics ministry, dedicated to helping Christians defend their faith and proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ.”


    The 800-acre theme park is designed around a replica of the ark that Noah built. The dimensions are taken from the Biblical text sharing the requirements that God gave Noah for the massive boat. The Ark Encounter shares the creationist theory that the Earth is only 6,000 years old and that the story of Noah’s flood is indeed 100% true.

    Speaking to Portuguese newspaper O Clarim, Cardinal Raymond Burke responded to Pope Francis’ call in 2016 for Christians to apologise to homosexuals.

     

    Cardinal Burke said: “I must say sincerely, even though I haven’t read the words of the Pope, that I don’t see why the Church ought to ask forgiveness for teaching the truth about sex and sexuality.”

    He told the publication that during his priesthood of more than 42 years, he had “always found priests very compassionate in meetings with people who have had this difficulty and have suffered from this condition”.

    Cardinal Burke highlighted in the interview that the Church’s traditional teachings “affirm the truth of Christ”.

    He added: “We know that we are dealing with an abnormal condition: God has not created us to have sexual relations with people of the same sex.

    “This is not a discrimination against persons.

    “It is to affirm the truth of Christ, the truth of our faith.”

    The priest, who is the former Prefect of the Apostolic Signatura, also spoke about the “frightening decline of Christian culture” and the increase of “rampant secularism” in the United States.

    He expalined: “I grew up during the 50s, when American society was marked by a Christian character, mostly Protestant but nevertheless faithful to the Christian identity.

    Louisiana Says Students Have Right to Pray, Read Bible in Public Schools


    Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry and U.S. Rep. Mike Johnson, R-La., have released the Louisiana Students Rights Review, a 15-page guide that explains the religious freedom rightsof teachers and students in public schools.


    The review says that public schools in the U.S. do not need to be “religion-free zones.”


    “To the contrary, both federal and state laws specifically protect religious freedom rights in public schools,” the document reads. “Thankfully, Congress and our state legislature still recognize the fundamental importance of religious liberty — the first freedom listed in the Constitution’s Bill of Rights.”


    The document also says that just because schools have to stay neutral on religion, that shouldn’t keep students from practicing their faith on school property.


    Instead, students are free to pray, discuss their faith, read the Bible and invite others to religious events. That the U.S. Constitution protects that type of speech, the review says.


    However, the document did note that all religious activity has to be student-led and student-initiated.

    100 Largest US Megachurches Do Not Affirm LGBT Causes, Mostly Led by White Pastors: Report

    An LGBT advocacy group released a report, showing that megachurches hold to traditional biblical teachings, with all 100 of the largest churches in the United States not affirming same-sex unions. The report also found that 93 percent of the megachurches are being led by a white pastor and only one has a female pastor.

    Church Clarity, an LGBT-affirming group that reports on and categorizes churches based on their stated policies regarding LGBT issues, released the findings last week. The report is spurring a debate about the theological stances on sexuality as well as the racial and gender diversity among pastoral leadership and congregational membership in the 100 largest churches in America, as ranked by Outreach Magazine’s popular annual list. All told, these congregations represent approximately 1.1 million Christians in America.

    Simon Dudley said beggars could present the town in a “sadly unfavourable light” when Prince Harry marries American actress Meghan Markle in May.

     

    Amy Oboussier from Worthing Churches Homeless Projects told Premier Dudley’s stance is “disappointing”.

    “We would have liked to see someone in a position of power take a progressive and more empathetic attitude towards those most vulnerable in his community,” she said.

    The Conservative leader of the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead also wrote a letter to Police and Crime Commissioner for Thames Valley Police, Anthony Stansfeld, dated 2nd January, calling on officers to take action.

    In the letter, he complained about “aggressive begging and intimidation”, and “bags and detritus” on the streets.

    Obussier said: “Moving people on is never going to be sustainable solution to ending homelessness.

    “If the council wants to make their streets look attractive by not having people rough sleeping then there needs to be a better steps than just moving people on to lower those rough sleeping rates.

    She added that the issue should be approached with kindness and empathy.
