A ‘bomb cyclone’ is coming

I am familiar with the words “bomb” and “cyclone,” but I have never seen them together before today. CNN explains: “A bomb cyclone happens when a cyclone, which is a low-pressure rotating storm system, experiences a dramatic drop in atmospheric pressure over a short period of time.”

This process is also known as “bombogenesis.” Bomb cyclones draw colder air from the North, which blasts areas in the northern hemisphere with icy temperatures.

Millions of Americans are in peril not only of a bomb cyclone but also of “thundersnow,” which is thunder and lightning during a snowstorm. This phenomenon “combines the hazards of a thunderstorm with the decreased visibility and ground accumulation of a snowstorm.”

“Hoarfrost” is the heavy frost that lines plants, trees, and other things when the air is below freezing and the atmosphere is moist. And a “polar vortex” is an area of low pressure circling the North and South Poles. The vortex around the North Pole is strengthening as we speak, blowing more Arctic air into our atmosphere.

The result of all this is Winter Storm Grayson, which is predicted to bring as much as twenty-four inches of snow to Maine and New Hampshire. Blizzard conditions are expected in several other New England states. Philadelphia is under a “snow emergency” this morning; New York City public schools are closed for the day.

Much of the coastal South is within Grayson’s path as well. Georgia and the eastern portion of the Carolinas could see six inches of snow. The northern parts of Florida will also receive an “icy mix.”

Damaging wind gusts, ice, and blizzard conditions will make travel in much of New England and the Atlantic Coast nearly impossible. Power outages have spread to some 77,000 homes as of today and can be life-threatening in such frigid temperatures. Flooding is expected along the Massachusetts coast.

What spiritual principles are relevant to this historic weather event?

Councillors threaten Franklin Graham ahead of Blackpool visit

Blackpool Council reiterated its stance on the organisation of public events, in response to calls that the evangelist’s Festival of Hope be shelved over claims he has encouraged prejudice.

Councillor Maria Kirkland, said: “If matters are brought to our attention, that could constitute incitement to hatred, we will forward these to the relevant public authorities and should this be proved we will not hesitate to terminate this booking.”

The Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, of which Franklin Graham is the chief executive officer, is joining Lancashire churches in holding the event at the Blackpool Winter Gardens between Friday 21st and Sunday 23rd September.

But thousands of people have signed a petition calling on the UK Government to bar the evangelist entry to the UK, saying he has homophobic and Islamophobic views and is “likely to promote prejudice and hatred”.

Blackpool Council said concerns raised about the Festival of Hope have been “explored very carefully” and the authority’s opposition to discrimination is “robust and clear”.

The authority also said it was forwarding concerns about Franklin Graham to the Home Office, which would be in the position to decide whether his conduct contravenes UK law.

Explaining the council’s current plan to honour the venue booking, Maria Kirkland added: “We will have a contractual obligation to The Billy Graham Evangelistic organisation, over their booking at the…

Blizzard Watch Up from Maine to Florida

The East Coast braces for a major winter storm this week. Meteorologists warn of a potential bombogenesis or a “bomb cyclone” beginning Thursday, Jan. 5, from Maine down to parts of Florida.

REUTERS/Lucas JacksonPedestrians stop to look at the frozen Josephine Shaw Lowell Memorial Fountain in New York, Jan. 3, 2018.

A bomb cyclone happens when the winter storm drops to 24 millibars within a period of 24 hours. As the storm moves from warm waters in the Atlantic Ocean to the artic, air masses build up that cause an explosive cyclogenesis.

Northeastern states usually experience this weather disturbance once a year. The upcoming storm, however, will likely bring blizzard colder than Mars and snow in Tallahassee, Florida after 21 years.

The storm is also expected to bring an estimated 12 inches of snow and winds of up to 40 to 60 mph. The bomb cyclone will zero in on New Hampshire, but most parts of the East Coast will suffer its wrath. Expect rain or sleet to fall as well.

Several establishments and institutions already announced its closure in anticipation of the blizzard. Schools, universities and theme parks in Florida have temporarily locked down until the winter storm passes.

State governments are also preparing evacuation measures and emergency shelters. South Carolina and Georgia have closed down airports as early as Wednesday morning due to the winter storm.

The bomb cyclone might cause power outages, which could interrupt heat supply in many homes. Flooding or erosion might also occur in coastal towns in the East.

Meanwhile, the Red Cross advises for families to stay safely indoors,…

Noah’s Ark swept away by Storm Eleanor

The vessel, known as the VerhalenArk – or Ark of Noah – struck yachts and other boats when it came free from its mooring at Urk in the Netherlands.

Owner, Aad Peters, told local radio station Omroep Flevoland: “We have been on the road for years and have experienced many storms, but this has never happened before.”

Several people on board the four-story vessel, which measures 70 metres long and ten metres wide, had to be rescued by emergency services.

Gusts of more than 110 kilometres-per-hour were recorded in parts of the Netherlands on Wednesday as Storm Eleanor swept across continental Europe with deadly force.

Thousands of people were disrupted when hundreds of flights were cancelled at Schiphol airport in Amsterdam, while several major roads and railways were shut.

Marketed as Europe’s “first floating Bible museum”, the exhibit opened to the public at the November and was due to stay in Urk until the end of next month.

Cadbury adds ‘Easter’ to egg hunt name after controversy

This year’s event, which is run in partnership with the National Trust, has been advertised on merchandise in supermarkets as the Cadbury Easter Egg Hunt.

The chocolate maker, now owned by Mondelez International, was criticised last year by public figures including the Prime Minister for referring to the family activity simply as the Cadbury Egg Hunt.

Giving his reaction to the apparent u-turn, Christian and author on the relationship between society and religion, Symon Hill told Premier: “Of course, it’s good when powerful institutions… listen to people’s concerns, though I suspect they may just be avoiding controversy; it doesn’t really cost them anything to do this.”

Last April, Theresa May condemned the decision to drop the word Easter from the egg search as “absolutely ridiculous”, while Archbishop of York Dr John Sentamu accused the firm of “spitting on the grave” of its Christian founder, John Cadbury.

A Cadbury spokesperson said: “We have used the word Easter in our marketing and communications for over 100 years and continue to do so in our current Easter campaign and National Trust partnership.

“Each year, we review our campaign materials and Easter products and make changes to keep them fresh and exciting and reflect what we know our consumers want.

“Part of this includes the naming of our Easter Egg hunt as the Cadbury Easter Egg Hunt – something we know is important to our…

Organizing a Replant from Within

SUBSCRIBE TODAY: iTunes • RSS • Stitcher • TuneIn Radio • Google Play

When you’re replanting, you have to have a plan of action and a team. Today, we talk about building that team.

Today’s Listener Question:

FROM AARON

What are some suggestions you would have in organizing a replanting team from within the church?

Episode Highlights:

  • It’s important to love the church you pastor, not the one you wish you pastored.
  • In a church replant, you have to identify prayer warriors in the congregation.
  • “Give me a church full of prayer warriors any day.” – Mark Clifton
  • “Prayer is wartime communication.” – John Piper
  • Satan gets us to really under estimate the power of prayer.
  • Elderly church members still need discipling, just like younger ones.
  • One of the biggest struggles in a replant or revitalization is facility idolatry.

The five steps for organizing a replant from within that we cover are:

  1. Evaluate remaining members
  2. Seek out prayer warriors
  3. Seek those who are already involved in the community
  4. Spend time with you team
  5. Affirm what God desires to do through your church

Resources mentioned in this episode include:

Revitalize & Replant is sponsored by the North American Mission Board and ChurchReplanters.com. More than 10% of churches in North America are at risk of closing and the North American Mission Board is committed to reversing this trend by decreasing the death rate of existing churches while simultaneously increasing the birth rate of new churches. Pilot of stricken plane ‘prayed before each flight’

Canadian-born Gareth Morgan “committed every flight to the Lord” and was “a warrior for Christ”, according to the 44-year-old’s flatmate Luke Thornley.

Mr Morgan was flying with five members of a British family on board a Sydney Seaplanes service in Australia when the aircraft crashed into the Hawkesbury River – there were no survivors.

Mr Thornley told the Australian Daily Telegraph: “He read the Bible every day and would always say a prayer to bless every plane he flew and keep him and his passengers safe before flying.

“When I’d come home at night he would have praise and worship songs playing on his 60-inch TV on YouTube.”

The other victims of the incident have been named as 58-year-old chief executive of the FTSE 100 Compass Group catering company Richard Cousins, his sons Will, 25, and Edward, 23, his fiancée Emma Bowden, 48, and her eleven-year-old daughter Heather.

Mr Morgan attended the Pentecostal Jubilee Church in eastern Sydney.

An investigation by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau and New South Wales Marine Area Command into the crash is underway.

The wreckage of the De Havilland DHC-2 Beaver aircraft was partially recovered from the river on Thursday.
