Evangelical Christians Fear Knowledge, Are Dumbing Down Their Faith, Christian Author Claims

Most American Christians today cannot respond to any question deeper than “Does God love everyone?” as they think such discourse should be reserved for theological universities, argues Colorado-based Ethan Renoe, who identifies himself as “an artist, traveler, and the Lord often speaks to me in poems.”

There is a fear in evangelical Christianity of knowledge, Renoe claims in an article on his website, proposing two reasons behind that fear.

“People are scared that if they come to know too much, they’ll be like the Pharisees and will just become haughty and judgmental to others, thus weakening their love for God; or they’re afraid that they’ll learn too much and go off the deep end of liberalism and swim in the risky waters of universalism and other heresies.”

Renoe, who graduated from the Moody Bible Institute, says he has found that the more he learns about God, His Word, and “theology which describes Him, the more I can love and worship Him, because now there is that much more to adore and be amazed by.”

He adds, “I’m saddened that atheists are so passionate about what they believe that they will read stacks of books…

Woman receives $284 billion electric bill

“My eyes just about popped out of my head. We had put up Christmas lights and I wondered if we had put them up wrong.” That was Mary Horomanski’s reaction when she went online to check her electric bill and discovered that she owed $284,460,000,000.

The electric company graciously allowed her to defer the full amount until November 2018, but her minimum payment for December was $28,156. Her son called the company and was told that the amount was an error. Her statement was soon corrected to $284.46.

Mary says that after getting the $284 billion bill, she told her son she wanted a heart monitor for Christmas.

Why “religion is not going away”

While you may not have gotten what you wanted yesterday, it’s likely that you celebrated Christmas anyway. Nine in ten Americans did. However, only 46 percent said they observed the day as primarily a religious (rather than cultural) holiday. The consumerism of Christmas continues today: 9 percent of retail sales and up to a third of online sales are returned.

While we can bemoan the secularism of our culture, I think it’s a remarkable fact that nearly everyone in America celebrates a day that is intended to honor Jesus’ birth. In fact, according to Pew Research, 81 percent of non-Christians celebrate Christmas. Included in their number are a third of Jews, three-quarters of Hindus and Buddhists, and 87 percent of people who identify as nonreligious.

The popularity of Christmas is just one example of a trend that is both countercultural and encouraging. In a fascinating recent article, humanities professor Peter Harrison explains “why religion is not going away and science will not destroy it.”

Harrison cites a prediction made in 1966 by anthropologist Anthony Wallace: “Belief in supernatural powers is doomed to die out, all over the world, as a result of the increasing adequacy and diffusion of scientific knowledge.” Wallace’s prediction was conventional wisdom among social scientists,…

Real Price Of Bitcoin Could Be $0.00 According To Morgan Stanley

REUTERS/Arnd WiegmannA sticker reading ”Bitcoin accepted here” is displayed at the entrance of the Stadthaus town hall in Zug, Switzerland, August 30, 2016.

Bitcoin could be worth absolutely nothing according to analysts working for banking giant Morgan Stanley. If nobody considers the digital currency as a rival to the US dollar or other fiat currencies then, they warned, then it’s virtually worthless.

“If nobody accepts the technology for payment, then the value would be 0,” analyst James Faucette and his team wrote in a note to clients adding that the cryptocurrency is tiny compared to other more traditional financial instruments. “Bitcoin average daily trading volume of $3 billion vs $5.4 trillion in the FX market, estimated $300 million in daily purchase volume vs. $17 billion for Visa.”

Coinmarketcap data says Faucette’s numbers are not correct as it reveals that as an average daily volume of bitcoin is $11.5 billion while the whole cryptocurrency market’s daily volume is almost $27 billion. But incorrect data aside, Faucette and his team do have a point. If no one wants to accept cryptocurrencies as a mode of exchange, they might as well be virtual funny money.

That being said, the same concept applies to all modes of payment be it fiat currency or even gold. They have value because people give them value, but unlike gold, Bitcoin doesn’t have any intrinsic use nor is it a tangible substance.

But even if merchants start refusing the digital currency as a mode of payment due to its inherent volatility, it can still be exchanged to fiat currency. Focus would then shift from the…

Podcast Episode #392

SUBSCRIBE: iTunes • RSS • Stitcher • TuneIn RadioGoogle Play • iHeart Radio

As we close out 2017, we answer a few questions from listeners. Like many questions we receive, these have a great deal to do with the changing church landscape.

Some highlights from today’s episode include:

  • When it comes to church finances, you have to put the good of the church ahead of any particular staff.
  • As a pastor, you have to be willing to stand up for yourself against church bullies.
  • A church is not a church if it’s not fulfilling the Great Commission.
  • Corporate worship should be something you look forward to, not something you dread.

The listener questions we answer today are:

TRUDY
Our Tithes and Offerings are way down and the percentage of Compensation vs Income is at 86%. We are trying to find ways to generate income. We have Investments of about $250,000.00 and want to use the dividends and capital gains to offset this high percentage. Is that something we can do legally?

JOE
How do you stand up for yourself when church bullies are seeking to destroy you and get you run off. How do you protect yourself, family and the church when you as a person do not like confrontation. In fact you shy away from confrontation and are very uneasy about it. Any help, direction on this matter would be appreciated.

MIKE
I am 36 and I’m in my first pastorate. It has been a year and a half. It has been tough. I pastor a small baptist church. We are older and on a good day, we may have…

Israel Regulator Seeks To Ban Bitcoin Firms From Tel-Aviv Stock Exchange

Pixabay/MichaelWuenschBitcon price has reportedly increased, reaching its peak on Aug. 2.

Israel seemingly dealt another blow to Bitcoin after the country’s market regulator proposed to ban cryptocurrency-based companies from trading in the Tel-Aviv stock exchange. The decision was partly due to the inherent volatility of digital currencies and fears that the current craze is developing into a full-blown speculative bubble.

Shmuel Hauser, the chairman of the Israel Securities Authority (ISA) told the Calcalist business conference he will bring the proposal to the ISA board next week. If the board approves, it will then be subject to a public hearing after which the stock exchange bylaws would need to be amended.

“If we have a company that their main business is digital currencies we would not allow it. If already listed, its trading will be suspended,” Hauser said, adding the ISA must find the appropriate regulation for such companies.

According to Hauser, the prices of Bitcoin behave like bubbles and they that they don’t want investors to be subject to that volatility and uncertainty. He added that it is important to signal to the market where ISA stands on the digital currency.

The value of Bitcoin dropped sharply on Friday plunging by 30 percent to below $12,000 after investors dumped the cryptocurrency following its sharp rise to $20,000. The price dropped also affected several crypto-companies, many of which lost a significant portion of their market capitalization.

Hauser did not identify which companies will be affected by the ban. However, there are at least two companies in the…
