Christian couple refuse to remove ‘fire hazard’ Christmas wreath

According to Derby Telegraph, Charles Bridges and his wife, Katie Tomkinson, said they were “baffled” when Derby Homes told them to remove their Christmas wreath by 18th December because it posed a fire hazard.

The housing association wrote in a letter that the wreath would be disposed of if the couple did not remove it themselves.

Bridges told the newspaper the situation was “safety gone mad”.

“I’m a Christian and I should be allowed to decorate my house with Christmas decorations,” he said.

“The wreath doesn’t contain lights, there’s no electricity involved at all so I can’t understand why it’s a fire risk.”

He added that he was “gobsmacked” that the wreath could be taken away and after challenging the housing association’s rule, it responded that it has always been its policy.

A spokesman for Derby Homes told Derby Telegraph that the couple’s front door opens onto a communal stairwell and entrance and most of the communal areas in the properties it manages don’t have fire detection or extinguishing systems fitted.

He added: “The policy requires the communal corridors, landings and stairwells of properties to be designated a “clear zone” (sterile area), free of all extraneous items.

“We realise that it may seem over the top to be demanding removal of these decorations as many may seem harmless and to pose little risk. Allowing specific items whilst denying others presents a larger management problem, given the number of flats we manage.”

The spokesman…

How a couple who lost 9 family members will celebrate Christmas

Joe and Claryce Holcombe are preparing for Christmas in Sutherland Springs, Texas. However, there will be nine people missing from their home.

The Holcombes, age eighty-six and eight-five, lost family members spanning three generations when a gunman opened fire at First Baptist Church on November 5. Their son, Bryan, was killed. So was their daughter-in-law, Karla; their grandson, Danny; their granddaughter-in-law, Crystal, and her unborn child; and four great-grandchildren: Noah, Greg, Emily, and Megan.

How are they coping?

Joe Holcombe, who goes by “Papa Joe,” told a Time reporter: “Everybody always wants us to be whimpering and crying because we lost some of our family. That’s not the way we are. It happened and it hurt. But we don’t look at death as separation. We look at it as just another event in our life.”

How can “Papa Joe” face tragedy with such hope? Because he believes in heaven: “It won’t be long until we’ll be there with the rest of the family. I miss my family. We don’t see them coming down the sidewalk at the front door anymore. But I won’t miss them long.”

“Blue Christmas” services

My father died ten days before Christmas in 1979. I miss him all year, but especially at this time of year.

Many churches are holding “Blue Christmas” services for people like me. Such services provide those in grief at Christmas an opportunity to pray, worship, and seek comfort in Christ. “The most wonderful time of the year” is less wonderful for those who mourn loved ones or suffer in other ways. Watching others celebrate the holiday season makes people in pain feel even more alone.

According to Psychology Today, a high incidence of depression is associated with the Christmas season. Suicide rates go up. One survey reported that 45 percent of respondents dread the holidays.

Loneliness among older adults is such an epidemic that there is even a campaign to end it. But new research indicates that millennials are

Disgraced Cardinal Bernard Law dies at the age of 86

He had recently been hospitalised in Rome after falling ill.

Law (pictured below, meeting Pope Benedict XVI) was once one of the most important leaders in the US church, helping to set priorities for the nation’s bishops, and was favoured by Pope John Paul II.

But in January 2002, The Boston Globe began a series of reports that used church records to reveal that Law had transferred abusive clergy among parishes for years, without alerting parents or police.

Within months, Catholics around the country demanded to know whether their bishops had done the same.

Law tried to manage the mushrooming scandal in his own archdiocese by first refusing to comment, then apologising and promising reform.

But thousands more church records were released describing new cases of how Law and others expressed more care for accused priests than for victims.

Amid a groundswell against the cardinal, including rare public rebukes from some of his own priests, Law asked to resign and the pope said yes.

“It is my fervent prayer that this action may help the archdiocese of Boston to experience the healing, reconciliation and unity which are so desperately needed,” Law said when he stepped down as head of the Boston archdiocese in December of that year.

“To all those who have suffered from my shortcomings and mistakes, I both apologise and from them beg forgiveness.”

It was a stunning fall from grace for Law and a rare step for the…

Sports star felt ‘called’ to give away mansion to Christian charity

Major League Baseball pitcher Cole Hamles and his wife Heidi gave the property – along with 100 acres of land – located on Table Rock Lake in the US state of Missouri, to Camp Barnabas.

The Texas Rangers player said: “There are tons of amazing charities in Southwest Missouri; out of all of these, Barnabas really pulled on our heartstrings.

“Seeing the faces, hearing the laughter, reading the stories of the kids they serve; there is truly nothing like it.

“Barnabas makes dreams come true, and we felt called to help them in a big way.”

During the last 24 years, Camp Barnabas has welcomed more than 75,000 people to its camps, which help young people with special needs and chronic illnesses as well as their siblings.

Camp Barnabas

CEO, Jason Brawner said: “Our mission is to change lives through disability ministry, and we’ve been strategically looking for ways to expand our ministry outside of a summer camp.

“We have no doubt that this gift will allow us to do just that.”

Cole and Heidi Hamels added: “We love that Barnabas sees the bigger picture; they are changing the way the world sees disability ministry.”

Zero-Based Church Scheduling – ThomRainer.com

Your church may be too busy.

Indeed your church calendar may be so full you have rendered much of the activity of the members ineffective. It’s time to start fresh.

I am proposing you dump everything on your church calendar. Okay, I’m not serious. But I am serious about your hypothetically cleaning the calendar. Let me give you my argument in a few bullet points:

  • Most churches have too many activities and programs and ministries for their members. Indeed most of their members are too busy to do ministry in the real world.
  • Over the years, those churches have added many things to the calendar without subtracting many or any. Those churches have a bloated calendar.
  • Attempt this exercise. Start with a blank calendar. We call that zero-based church scheduling. For now, it’s only a hypothetical exercise.
  • Now, fill in the calendar with only those activities you feel will really move the church forward. Keep it simple. Keep it basic.
  • Look at those activities that didn’t make the cut. See if the church is ready to reduce or eliminate the commitment to them. If not, you can make certain you don’t invest more money or time in the activity.
  • If you do this every year, your leadership will become more and more aware of how precious the resource of time is for your members. They will become more cautious before adding even more stress or activities to your members.

In too many of our churches, we have become so busy doing activities, our members have little or no time to do real ministry outside the…

Open Heavens 20 December 2017: Wednesday daily devotional by Pastor Adeboye – A Matter Of Choice

Open Heavens 20 December 2017: Wednesday daily devotional by Pastor Adeboye – A Matter Of Choice

Topic: A Matter Of Choice — Wednesday 20, December 2017.

Memorise: Let them shout for joy, and be glad, that favour my righteous cause: yea, let them say continually, Let the LORD be magnified, which hath pleasure in the prosperity of his servant. Psalm 35:27

Read: Genesis 32:3-6 (KJV)

3 And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother unto the land of Seir, the country of Edom.

4 And he commanded them, saying, Thus shall ye speak unto my lord Esau; Thy servant Jacob saith thus, I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed there until now:

5 And I have oxen, and asses, flocks, and menservants, and womenservants: and I have sent to tell my lord, that I may find grace in thy sight.

6 And the messengers returned to Jacob, saying, We came to thy brother Esau, and also he cometh to meet thee, and four hundred men with him.

Bible in One Year: Proverbs 5-8, Zachariah 8:9-23, Hymn: Sing Hymn 10: There Shall Be Showers Of Blessings

MESSAGE:

If you measure life by the experiences of some people, you will live far from your God-given purpose and barely scratch the surface. Some people are alive but only just surviving from day to day. In Luke 13:11-17, the woman who was bound for 18 years did not die, but she was merely surviving and not living. Also, the man with the unclean spirit in Mark 1:23-26 was continually going to church, and yet he was inhabited by an unclean spirit. It was even in the synagogue that the Lord met him. Although he was living, he was the captive of a demonic spirit. What of Naaman who appeared to be a distinguished and successful man, and yet he had a problem that no man could solve (2 Kings 5:1)? Just like the individuals in all these examples, many people today are barely surviving, and are not living life as purposed by God for them. God not only wants you to live life, He also wants you to enjoy the abundant life that He gives (John 10:10). Are you not tired of “managing”, struggling to survive, and living from hand to mouth? If you are truly tired, the Lord will make a way for you.

God is interested in the overflow of His blessings upon your life. He does not just want you to be healed; he also wants His healing virtue to flow through you to others. He wants you to be free from captivity, and beyond this, He also wants you to set the captives free. God does not want you just to be rich but also to lend to nations. He wants you to be so prosperous that when nations cannot balance their budgets, they will come and pay you a visit. God wants you to bring great joy to your family, community, city and nation. However, no matter how much He wants the overflow for you, He will respect what you want for yourself. He cannot force an overflow of His blessing on you when you want so little of it. There are different levels of greatness, and your choice of the type of life you want for yourself has a role to play in determining how great you become. Let us see the example of Esau. Yes, he sold his birthright, but as a seed of Abraham, he was so blessed from the remnant of blessing pronounced on him that he had 400 bodyguards. How many bodyguards do ministers, senators, state governors or even presidents have today? So you would agree that Esau was not doing badly. However, compared to Jacob his brother, who became a great nation, the difference is definitely clear. Do you want to merely survive, or do you want to be truly blessed with the overflowing portion of God’s blessings? The choice is yours!

Prayer Point: Father, I am tired of just managing to survive. I choose the overflow of Your blessings. Please release it to me and my family now.

Hymn 10: There Shall Be Showers Of Blessings

1. There shall be showers of blessing:
This is the promise of love;
There shall be seasons refreshing,
Sent from the Savior above.

Chorus:
Showers of blessing,
Showers of blessing we need:
Mercy-drops round us are falling,
But for the showers we plead.

2. There shall be showers of blessing,
Precious reviving again;
Over the hills and the valleys,
Sound of abundance of rain.
Chorus:

3. There shall be showers of blessing;
Send them upon us, O Lord;
Grant to us now a refreshing,
Come, and now honor Thy Word.
Chorus:

4. There shall be showers of blessing:
Oh, that today they might fall,
Now as to God we’re confessing,
Now as on Jesus we call!
Chorus:

5. There shall be showers of blessing,
If we but trust and obey;
There shall be seasons refreshing,
If we let God have His way.
Chorus:
