Australian probe into child abuse calls for end to Catholic celibacy demands

Australia’s Royal Commission into Institution Responses to Child Sexual Abuse delivered its final 17-volume report and 189 recommendations following a wide-ranging investigation.

Australia’s longest-running royal commission – which is the country’ highest form of inquiry – has been investigating since 2012 how the Catholic Church and other institutions responded to sexual abuse of children in Australia over 90 years.

The report heard the testimonies of more than 8,000 survivors of child sex abuse. Of those who were abused in religious institution, 62% were Catholics.

“We have concluded that there were catastrophic failures of leadership of Catholic Church authorities over many decades,” the report said.

Recommendations include that the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference request that the Vatican consider introducing voluntary celibacy for clergy.

The bishops’ body should also request clarity on whether information received in the confessional that a child has been sexually abused is covered by the seal of secrecy and whether absolution of a perpetrator should be withdrawn until the perpetrator confesses to police.

Catholic clerics who testified to the royal commission gave varying opinions about what if anything a priest could divulge about what was said in a confessional about child abuse.

The commission’s recommendations, which with interim reports total 409, include making failure to report child abuse a criminal offence. Clerics would not be exempt…

DCLM Daily Manna 15 December, 2017 by Pastor Kumuyi – Judgement Is Certain

Topic: Judgement Is Certain — Friday December 15, 2017.

Text: Judges 2:11-23

Key Verse: “And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel; and he said, Because that this people hath transgressed my covenant which I commanded their fathers, and have not hearkened unto my voice” (Judges 2:20).

The reason organizations have rules and regulations is for the orderly and decent conduct of their affairs. This is a necessary bedrock on which the successful attainment of the organization’s objectives depend. Obedience to such rules and regulations is of paramount importance. Failure to observe the rules attracts disciplinary measure. The history of the children of Israel, particularly their relationship with the Almighty is one that elicits a feeling of awe and indignation.

Today, they are on the mountain top obeying God implicitly; tomorrow, they are down the valley worshiping man-made idols. Yet, God would not utterly abandon them; He would send a prophet to warn them. God’s commandment ought to serve as a constant reminder of the benefit of obedience and the inescapable punishment for rebellion. Baal worship involved cult, prostitution and child sacrifice. The prophets repeatedly condemned Baal worship with its associated sacrifices and warned the Israelites of the anger of God.

They were, most times, far too gone to pay any heed. Soon, the nation began to decline “because they forsook the LORD and served Baal and Ashtoreth” (verse 13). The inevitable eventually happened to them as “the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel.” He that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed and that without remedy” (Proverbs 29:1). Why not take a cue from the sad and unfortunate example of Israel and avoid courting God’s ire and indignation.

Thought for the day: To be stubborn and obstinate before God is to court His anger and Judgement.

Vs. 10 of today’s scripture says: “And straightway coming up out of the water, He saw the heavens opened, and the spirit like a dove descending upon Him.” Note that there are two kinds of heavens over your head: heaven of brass which provokes curses – Deut. 28:23, and heaven that pour forth rain of favour and mercy (Deut 28:12; Mark 1:10).

When Jesus entered the water and came out, the heavens were immediately opened! Note again that many souls have been baptized, but not all saw OPENED HEAVENS! As you step out of the water of the Word today, I prophecy that your heavens shall be opened today in Jesus name. Open heavens pour down favour, marital settlement, divine speed, promotion, restoration, overtaking and recovery grace, healing anointing, financial laughter and uncommon supply!

As you step into your office or school room today, I prophecy that your heavens shall be opened in Jesus name. From this day, as you step into your business arena, open heaven shall become your testimony! I prophesy again as from this day, where you struggle shall be where you will shine! May your heavens be opened as you join millions of ODM users worldwide tonight 12am -1am to pray and seek the Lord! You shall be announced for good!

Prayer Points: Take any song of power and authority now.

1. Pray generally as led on today’s scripture.

2. The same anointing that was on Jesus Christ is upon my life right now. O Lord God, grant me opened heavens from today and tonight in Jesus name. Lord announce my life and ministry.

3. I reject the heavens of brass and pains in Jesus name.

4. I command everything blocking my heaven to dissolve by the blood of Jesus Christ now in Jesus name.

5. O Lord, make me the head and never the tail in Jesus name.
6. Lord Gog, bless my basket and storehouse in Jesus name.

7. My Father, pour upon me fresh rain and bless the labour of my hand. My God, wide away my tears today in Jesus name.

TREM’s Daily 15 December 2017 Devotional by Dr. Mike Okonkwo – Is Grace A Licence To Sin?

TREM’s Daily 15 December 2017 Devotional by Dr. Mike Okonkwo - Is Grace A Licence To Sin?

Topic: Is Grace A Licence To Sin? — Friday December 15, 2017.

“What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?” – Romans 6:1 (KJV)

In recent times, more people are beginning to antagonise the message of grace out of sheer ignorance. I hear people say they can do anything and God does not mind because He sees them in Christ and rather than live after the example of Christ, they choose to live anyhow. My question to such people is “were you ever saved?” if truly you accepted Jesus into your life; if truly you love Him, then sin will be far away from you.

The Bible is very complete. When Paul, the Apostle of Grace was teaching, in our scripture for today, he answered a very fundamental question: shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? And His response was God forbid! If you are a believer and you understand your relationship with God, then sin cannot have dominion over you. But the first thing is to accept that you have been delivered from the law and so you are no more under the law.

Beloved, you must put first things first if you must enjoy your Christian life. You must first believe right before you can do right. “Being” comes before “doing”. When you see yourself as Christ sees you, as the new creation, sin will be repulsive to you. When you have experienced the love of the Father, then nothing unclean will appeal to you.

As a new creation in Christ, what propels your actions is the genuine love for God. When you love Him, you desire to be like Him. You talk like Him; you walk like Him and when people see you they see Him in you. That is a believer.

To get the full import of the New Creation, take the time to read the book of Romans. Read it in as many translations as possible. Come to a clear understanding of grace and you will discover that you will freely and happily live above sin, not because God is carrying a hammer to hit you, but because you love Him.

Judge Awards PCUSA Ownership of Pennsylvania Megachurch’s Property

(Photo: Facebook)First Presbyterian Church of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

A judge has ruled that the property of a Pennsylvania megachurch whose congregation voted overwhelmingly to leave Presbyterian Church (USA) belongs to the mainline denomination.

Judge Stephen Baratta of Northampton County ruled Tuesday that the property of First Presbyterian Church of Bethlehem belonged to PCUSA and its local administrative body, the Presbytery of Lehigh.

Judge Baratta cited the “trust clause” of the PCUSA’s Book of Order, which says churches affiliated with PCUSA find their property as being held in trust with the denomination.

“FPCB’s governing documents all express an intent to be bound by the Constitution of the PCUSA, which includes the trust clause at issue,” ruled Baratta.

“In addition to these governing documents, FPCB’s pattern of obtaining Presbytery approval before purchasing, selling, or mortgaging land further contradicts the notion that it intended to retain a power of revocation … If FPCB believed it continued to control its property at will, Lehigh Presbytery approval would not be necessary.”

The Reverend Marnie Crumpler, senior pastor at FPC Bethlehem, told The Christian Post that she and her congregation were “very disappointed” with the decision and they are…

5 Faith Facts about Doug Jones: Quiet Christian

5 Faith Facts about Doug Jones: Quiet Christian

Democrat Doug Jones wasn’t supposed to have a chance in the Senate race that pits him against Republican Roy Moore in the ruby red state of Alabama.

But in recent weeks, as women began to accuse Moore of inappropriate conduct with them when they were teenagers, suddenly Jones seemed to have a shot.

Jones, a former U.S. attorney, slammed Moore on those allegations as they campaigned to take the seat once held by U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions, saying, “I damn sure believe and have done my part to ensure that men who hurt little girls should go to jail, not to the U.S. Senate.”

Tuesday’s (Dec. 12) election will determine whether Alabama could actually elect a Democrat to the Senate. But even as his national profile has risen, most people still know little about Jones and his faith.

While Moore has rallied with pastors and enjoyed the backing of the Rev. Franklin Graham, Jones’ religious life has remained one of quiet, consistent worship and church involvement.

Here are five faith facts about Jones.

1. “I am a Christian.”

Jones told The Birmingham News he would be a senator “who cares about all people, not just a select few. That’s what I think the teachings of religion are, is the caring about the least of these, the caring about all people, and making sure there’s a fairness to everything.”

RC Sproul Dies at 78

(Screenshot: YouTube/Ligonier Ministries)Reformed theologian and Ligonier Ministries founder Robert Charles Sproul speaking at a 2014 conference.

Influential Reformed theologian R. C. Sproul died Thursday afternoon in Altamonte Springs, Florida. He was 78.

Sproul, who has written more than 90 books, “died peacefully after being hospitalized twelve days ago due to severe respiratory difficulties exacerbated by the flu and complicated by chronic obstructive pulmonary disease,” Ligonier Ministries CEO Chris Larson said.

Born in 1939 in Pittsburgh, Sproul was ordained as a teaching elder in the Presbyterian Church in America. He founded Ligonier Ministries in 1971 “to equip Christians to articulate what they believe, why they believe it, how to live it, and how to share it.”

Sproul was involved in the crafting of the 1978 Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy, a declaration of faith signed by approximately 300 evangelical scholars

Larson said of Sproul: “[H]e was used of the Lord to proclaim, teach, and defend the holiness of God in all its fullness. Through his teaching ministry, many of us learned that God is bigger than we knew, our sin is more deeply rooted than we imagined, and the grace of God in Jesus Christ is overwhelming.”

In a letter to Ligonier supporters, W….

R. C. Sproul, Influential Pastor, Author, and Founder of Ligonier Ministries, Has Died

R.C. Sproul, the influential Christian leader who founded Ligonier Ministries, died today, December 14, 2017.

Ligonier Ministries made the announcement via Twitter. They included a picture of the notable Christian apologist, author, pastor, and ministry founder along with the sad news:

“The Sproul family has shared the sad news with us that our founder, Dr. R.C. Sproul, went home to be with the Lord this afternoon. Please pray for the Sprouls. Further updates will be available soon.”

Sproul had been hospitalized with a serious respiratory condition, as ChristianHeadlines.com previously reported. Last week, Ligonier Ministries posted an update on his health:

“Dr. Sproul remains in a serious condition, his breathing being supported by a ventilator. He is currently sedated as the medical staff in ICU continues to monitor his health, even as they attempt a number of techniques to eliminate any infection.”

Sadly, the doctors were unable to successfully treat Dr. Sproul’s condition, but we rejoice that he is at home with the Lord.

Harry and Meghan’s wedding ‘no tick-box exercise’, says Archbishop Justin Welby

Speaking on BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, the Archbishop of Canterbury said: “I am very, very sure after conversations that this is no tick-box exercise, ‘we ought to get married in a church’.”

Harry and Ms Markle announced their engagement on November 27 after dating for just over 18 months.

They are due to marry at St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, in May.

“There is a profound sense of commitment, of seriousness, both about faith and their lives together, which is quite inspirational.

“It’s important because people look at it and see a model of how two people commit their lives to one another before God in the presence of millions of people.

“It’s always a beautiful moment – every wedding is profoundly beautiful. Even when you drop the rings it’s still a very moving wedding.”

He refused to confirm whether he would be conducting the ceremony, saying “I think that’s up to them”, but revealed he was looking forward to the big event, saying it would be “fun”.

On the Anniversary of Sandy Hook, a Mother’s Gratitude for Her Child’s Faith

On the Anniversary of Sandy Hook, a Mother’s Gratitude for Her Child’s Faith

Five years ago my son, Tain, was sitting in his third-grade classroom in Sandy Hook Elementary when a gunman blasted his way into the building and killed 26 adults and children — including Tain’s godbrother, Ben — whose mother is Tain’s godmother.

I barely have words for the grief that washed over us. I wasn’t sure how to help Tain deal with the life-shattering effects of such a horrific tragedy. Eventually I sensed I had to walk through it with my son — and sometimes let him lead the way.

Only Tain knows the depth of his loss and the shock of realizing a child even younger than himself can die. He has few words for the magnitude of what happened but I knew he had to work his own grief, and the way he did so would determine the way in which he walked through the world — whether he could live in faith and not fear.

All I could do was listen. My own grief overwhelmed me, though, and I wanted, needed, to feel in faith that I could grasp a sense of my own hope and positivity again. But in a season when the worst had happened, how could I summon such faith? Muscle memory or, more accurately, heart memory came into play.

Our pastor, Kathie Adams-Shepherd, said faith is people showing up for you. She would reiterate it many times in those days. Perhaps this is what Tain experienced. I now see I was holding fast to faith when I stood with him in his…
