South Sudan conflict enters fifth year, Christian charity warns of looming hunger

What started as a power struggle between the South Sudanese president, Salva Kiir, and the former vice president, Rik Machar, turned into full-scale civil war, in December 2013.

The UN estimates that tens of thousands have died so far, and more than two million people are displaced within the country.

The organisation said people have seen their loved ones killed and their property looted and destroyed.

It warns that families face dire living conditions in makeshift camps, and are struggling to keep themselves and their children alive, as the country continues to unravel.

Cathy Hynds, CAFOD’s South Sudan representative said: “I’ve lived in South Sudan, and know of the great promise the world’s youngest country has to offer, but the continuing conflict has lead to bleak humanitarian conditions, which has exacerbated the food crisis in the country.

“People are likely to face dangerous levels of food shortages in the first months of 2018.”

The charity said “lean season”, when households run short of food before the next harvest, is forecast to start in January 2018, three months earlier than usual.

In Yirol in central South Sudan, CAFOD and its Irish sister agency Trocaire have distributed food and essential items to people most in need.

CAFOD’s local partner, Bishop Barani Eduardo Hiiboro Kussala of the Catholic diocese of Tombura-Yambio, recently conducted a meeting of religious leaders and governors from nine counties of South Sudan to seek ways of…

(Photo: Reuters/Ralph D. Freso)Buffalo Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick throws a pass against the Arizona Cardinals during the second half of their NFL football game in Phoenix, Arizona October 14, 2012.

A Christian group is hosting a worship service at the Buffalo Bills’ fieldhouse and training center before the NFL team’s last home game for the season.

Kingdom Bound Ministries is sponsoring “Church at the Game,” a worship service scheduled for Sunday morning at the ADPRO Sports Training Center, which is within walking distance of New Era Field.

William Hein, organizer of the Church at the Game service, told The Christian Post in an interview Thursday that this was the first time Kingdom Bound has hosted a worship service before a major sporting event.

“Since this is the last home game, this will be the only service this year. It is our hope and prayer that we will be able to continue for the 2018 and future years,” said Hein.

“The Buffalo Bills and the NFL are not official sponsors. However, they are allowing us and have been very helpful with our endeavor to have Church at the Game.”

Inquiry into child abuse allegations against Bishop Bell deficient, says review

The review, led by Lord Carlile of Berriew, found the inquiry into Bishop George Bell was too quick to accept the allegations of the complainant “without serious investigation or inquiry”.

Claims made by a woman known only as “Carol” of abuse by Bishop Bell when she was aged between five and eight in the 1950s led the Church to issue an apology and pay £15,000 in compensation.

But the inquiry was widely criticised for failing to investigate the victim’s claims or seek witnesses who had known or worked for Bishop Bell during his tenure as Bishop of Chichester between 1929 and 1958.

Bishop Bell passed away a few months after his retirement.

The inquiry led to the cancellation of a planned statue in Canterbury Cathedral celebrating the bishop’s work helping to rescue Jewish children transported out of Germany during the Second World War.

Bishop Bell’s name was also removed from a room at the University of Chichester, while a building in the town was also renamed.

Lambeth Palace commissioned a review of the original investigation following criticism from Bishop Bell’s supporters that not enough was done to substantiate the complainant’s allegations, and after no other alleged victims came forward despite a helpline being set up.

Lord Carlile emphasised that the review was not to establish the truth of Carol’s claims, but only to investigate the Church’s handling of the case and establish best practice for handling future complaints.

“I have concluded that the…

A retraction I am delighted to make

In yesterday’s Daily Article, I made the point that mortality is a fact for us all. Reflecting on stories in the day’s news, I stated, “Evil people like the Son of Sam killer can develop heart disease. Heroes like John McCain can develop brain cancer. The death rate is still 100 percent.”

John McCain is still a hero and he still has brain cancer. But a kind reader sent me an extraordinary note about the Son of Sam killer that I asked his permission to share with you today.

An amazing story of redemption

Dr. Steve Foster is pastor of Community Bible Church in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. In December 2009, he visited the “Son of Sam,” David Berkowitz, in prison.

Thirty years earlier, Berkowitz terrorized New York City, killing six people and wounding seven others. Police mounted the largest manhunt in New York City history, arresting him on August 10, 1977. Berkowitz claimed to have been obeying the orders of a demon manifested in the form of a dog belonging to his neighbor “Sam.” He pled guilty to second-degree murder and has been serving six consecutive life sentences.

I remembered his story when reading that Berkowitz has now been hospitalized for a heart problem. What I didn’t know was the rest of the story.

Dr. Foster tells it well: While in prison, Berkowitz came to faith in Christ. Such “conversions” are often a play for media attention or sympathy from parole boards, but his has clearly been sincere. For decades, he has been ministering to other prisoners in Jesus’ name. He has especially focused on those who are suicidal and emotionally disturbed.

In his blog post, Dr. Foster notes: “It was hard for me to imagine this man as the former Son of Sam. He was humble, gentle, self-effacing.” Berkowitz has developed a writing ministry with Christian ministers around the world; his testimony has been used by Prison Fellowship in many of their prison outreaches.

Berkowitz views his imprisonment as just punishment for his crimes…

Report ‘to criticise Church of England inquiry into George Bell sex abuse claim’

The independent report, by Lord Carlile of Berriew, will be published on Friday and is expected to detail failings in how the Church acted following a single claim made decades after the bishop’s death.

According to the Telegraph, it will say that there was no proof Bishop Bell was guilty and accuse the Church of carrying out a “wholly inadequate” investigation.

A key recommendation will be that alleged abusers should not be named unless there is proof of guilt, the paper said.

Lord Carlile, the former independent reviewer of terrorism legislation, was named as the independent reviewer of the case just over a year ago.

The review was commissioned by the Church of England’s National Safeguarding Team.

In 2015 the Bishop of Chichester issued a formal apology following the settlement of a legal claim over allegations of sexual abuse by Bishop Bell, who was Bishop of Chichester from 1929 until shortly before his death in 1958.

The review will examine the processes surrounding the allegations which were first brought in 1995 to the Diocese of Chichester and again in 2013, this time to Lambeth Palace.

It will also consider the processes, including the commissioning of expert independent reports and archival and other investigations, which were used to inform the decision to settle the case.

The Bishop of Bath and Wells, Peter Hancock, the Church of England’s lead bishop on safeguarding, said the review will look in detail into how the Church handled the Bell case.

Carol service attendance down 25%

Top five Christmas global traditions becoming popular in the UK

1. Sending online Christmas cards
2. Visiting a Christmas market
3. Serving panettone
4. Hanging a wreath on the door
5. Putting up an ‘Elf on the Shelf’ toy

The traditional services are increasingly falling out of favour among UK households, according to a survey by the family history research firm AncestryDNA.

Meanwhile, practises rooted in continental Europe, such as visiting a German-style Christmas market or serving Italian panettone, appear to be becoming more popular.

Ancestry spokesperson, Russell James commented: “Much like these Christmas traditions, new and old, our own British identity has been forged through a process of adoption and adaptation over the centuries.

“We found that the Christmas traditions we now follow are more international than we probably realised…”

The research found 42 per cent fewer people will leave food or drink out for Father Christmas this year and 32 per cent fewer will hang out stockings for presents.

Top five Christmas traditions that people have stopped doing

1. Leaving food/drink out for Father Christmas
2. Hanging out stockings for gifts
3. Playing board games on Christmas Day
4. Placing oranges in stockings
5. Attending carol services

In contrast, the number of people embracing the western European tradition of visiting a Christmas market is set to rise by 27 per cent, while 16 per cent more people will serve panettone.

Buying presents for loved ones,…

Breaking Out of the Status Quo in Your Church

Podcast Episode #389

SUBSCRIBE: iTunesRSSStitcherTuneIn RadioGoogle Play • iHeart Radio

Whether a church is in decline, plateaued, or growing, sticking to the status quo can hurt the church. Church is often needed, and to lead change, you often have to break out of the status quo.

Some highlights from today’s episode include:

  • When I see “status quo” I relate it to lack of courage, lack of foresight, lack of vision, and comfort.
  • It’s entirely possible for a growing church to be hanging on to the status quo.
  • What would happen if our churches prayed fervently asking God to give them a receptive heart and open eyes to needed change.
  • Breaking out of the status quo requires much courage.
  • When you make a major change in the church, you’re going to find out who the bullies are.
  • The more you listen to outside voices, the more ideas you’ll have for your church.
  • Pastors and church leaders should be proactive in acquiring more knowledge.
  • You can’t effectively lead change on your own.

The seven keys to breaking the status quo are:

  1. Few churches focus their prayer efforts here
  2. The courage factor
  3. Dealing with the gnats and bullies
  4. Listening to outside voices
  5. The learning factor
  6. Finding a coalition
  7. Then prayer . . . again
