Noted Reformed theologian and founder of Ligonier Ministries R.C. Sproul has been hospitalized due to breathing problems and as of Tuesday remains in critical condition.

On its website, Ligonier reported Dec. 3 that Sproul had been hospitalized on Dec. 2 because of “respiratory difficulties,” listing him as being “in guarded condition at the intensive care unit and receiving expert care and attention.”

“The doctors believe this is not pneumonia, but an exacerbation of his emphysema due to the flu so he has been put on a ventilator to help his breathing. Thank you for praying for his recovery,” noted the Ligonier blog entry.

Open Heavens 14 December 2017: Thursday daily devotional by Pastor Adeboye – Paul Was Truly Yorked

Open Heavens 14 December 2017: Thursday daily devotional by Pastor Adeboye – Paul Was Truly Yorked

Topic: Paul Was Truly Yorked — Thursday 14, December 2017.

Memorise: Then Paul answered, What mean ye to weep and to break mine heart? for I am ready not to be bound only, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus. –  Acts 21:13

Read: Acts 21:7-14 (KJV)

7 And when we had finished our course from Tyre, we came to Ptolemais, and saluted the brethren, and abode with them one day.

8 And the next day we that were of Paul’s company departed, and came unto Caesarea: and we entered into the house of Philip the evangelist, which was one of the seven; and abode with him.

9 And the same man had four daughters, virgins, which did prophesy.

10 And as we tarried there many days, there came down from Judaea a certain prophet, named Agabus.

11 And when he was come unto us, he took Paul’s girdle, and bound his own hands and feet, and said, Thus saith the Holy Ghost, So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man that owneth this girdle, and shall deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.

12 And when we heard these things, both we, and they of that place, besought him not to go up to Jerusalem.

13 Then Paul answered, What mean ye to weep and to break mine heart? for I am ready not to be bound only, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.

14 And when he would not be persuaded, we ceased, saying, The will of the Lord be done.

Bible in One Year: Revelation 7-10, Zechariah 1:1-17, Hymn: Sing Hymn 14 – Take My Life

MESSAGE:

“Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.” Matthew 11:29

In the above scripture, Jesus mentions two profound things that will give rest to our souls, one of which is that we should take on His easy yoke. What is His yoke? It is that cross of self-denial we are required to carry as we follow Him. This refers to works such as these, which are integral to the Christian life: making sacrifices, giving, service, investment of time to pray and study God’s word, and soul-winning. One person who carried the yoke of Jesus was Paul. He understood what it means to be made by Him and for Him (Colossians 1:16). When he met Christ on his way to Damascus and he surrendered to Him, from then onwards, he never turned back. He joyfully sacrificed all his earthly achievements and recognition so as to pursue one goal in life: to know Jesus (Philippians 3:8)! He worked like no one else did. He traveled extensively across the globe just to serve his Saviour, risking his life over and again in the process. When it was revealed that he would be bound and afflicted if he went to Jerusalem, with the brethren passionately pleading that he should not go, he responded with these words in Acts 21:13:

“…What mean ye to weep and to break mine heart? for I am ready not to be bound only, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.”

Have you taken on the yoke of Christ to the extent that you can go anywhere, do anything and give up anything for Him?

In addition, Jesus said we must be ready to learn of Him. Jesus Christ can be likened to a well of knowledge that we cannot exhaust in our lifetime. Beloved, there is so much to know about Him. Have you ever wondered how the Holy Spirit gives you insight into a particular scripture, and by the following day, week or month, when you take up that same verse, you still receive a deeper revelation from it? Do you know that the Holy Spirit can give you deep insights into a verse of scripture from which you can produce 10 or more solid books from? Although Paul knew so much about Jesus, when he compared what he knew with what he was yet to know, he realized that he knew very little. For this reason, he made it his life’s goal to know Him. Do you know so much about Jesus and boast over this? Repent now, and commit to learning more of Him everyday till you meet Him in glory.

Key Point: Those who went before us have left a great legacy for us; what legacy are we leaving behind for our children regarding the Christian faith?

Hymn 14: Take My Life

1. Take my life and let it be
Consecrated, Lord, to Thee.
Take my moments and my days,
Let them flow in endless praise.

2. Take my hands and let them move
At the impulse of Thy love.
Take my feet and let them be
Swift and beautiful for Thee.

3. Take my voice and let me sing,
Always, only for my King.
Take my lips and let them be
Filled with messages from Thee.

4. Take my silver and my gold,
Not a mite would I withhold.
Take my intellect and use
Every pow’r as Thou shalt choose.

5. Take my will and make it Thine,
It shall be no longer mine.
Take my heart, it is Thine own,
It shall be Thy royal throne.

6. Take my love, my Lord, I pour
At Thy feet its treasure store.
Take myself and I will be
Ever, only, all for Thee.

Attack by nun didn’t cause death of boy at orphanage, abuse inquiry told

The Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry heard that Samuel Carr died of a brain haemorrhage at the age of six following an E.coli infection, which he could have caught by touching a dead rat.

The probe heard that the boy, known as Sammy, had been suffering some form of malnourishment which would have made him more vulnerable to infections.

Forensic pathologist Professor Anthony Busuttil said in a report: “I have no doubt at all that the brain haemorrhage… was not traumatic in origin.”

The inquiry has been hearing evidence over several days about institutions run by the Daughters of Charity of St Vincent de Paul, particularly Smyllum Park orphanage in Lanark.

It has previously heard claims that Sammy died days after being beaten by a nun at the institution, which closed in 1981.

Prof Busuttil, a regius professor of forensic medicine at the University of Edinburgh, prepared a report for the inquiry after studying other post-mortem findings about Sammy, who died in hospital in June 1964.

Reading from his conclusions, he told the inquiry: “Based on the complete medical evidence it appears that trauma following on an allegation of assault did not have a direct or indirect part to play in the death of this child.”

He said post-mortem findings showed the boy’s brain was swollen, caused by bleeding over several days, and he agreed with past findings that the cause of death was a cerebral haemorrhage.

The expert witness also told how previously inexplicable abnormalities…

The African-American Community You Never Heard of but Wished You Did (Interview)

Expand | Collapse

There’s something about overcoming enormous odds, starting from the bottom and working your way to the top that leaves a deep and long-lasting impression on people. Eric L. Motley, who as a toddler was essentially abandoned by his parents and raised in a rural community founded by former slaves in Alabama, is one such story. Having nothing materially but having everything in terms of love and community support, Motley worked himself up to earning a Ph.D. and a position in the White House under former President George W. Bush. His life’s story is a living testament that the present doesn’t need to replicate the past.

Motley, who is now executive vice president of the think tank The Aspen Institute in Washington, D.C., spoke to ChristianWeek about his new book, Madison Park: A Place of Hope (Zondervan, November 2017), and about the “debt of love” he owes to the people of Madison Park, Ala. The book is a tribute to this small black community where residents give their last dollar to help a neighbor in need and do so without expecting any recognition or reward in return. It was in this little known community of love, generosity, and “doing the right thing” that Motley grew up and one where he promised to never forget.

Below is a transcript of the interview with Motley, lightly edited for clarity.

(PHOTO: FACEBOOK/LAKEWOOD CHURCH)Pastor John Gray of addresses the congregation at Lakewood Church in Houston, Texas.

Lakewood Church Senior Pastor Joel Osteen has praised the influence and scriptural insight of Associate Pastor John Gray, who was recently named as new senior pastor at Redemption Church in Greenville, South Carolina.

“John Gray is becoming one of the most respected and influential voices of this generation. His scriptural insights are brilliant and his charismatic speaking style is like no one else,” Osteen said in a statement to The Christian Post Tuesday night.

“I can promise you that Greenville, South Carolina will never be the same once John Gray rolls into town,” the megachurch leader added.

Lakewood, which told CP that there are no plans to replace Gray, as he will “continue preaching on various Wednesday nights at Lakewood,” added that “Pastor Lisa Osteen Comes, Dr. Paul Osteen, Nick Nilson and others have always rotated on leading the Wednesday night services at Lakewood and they will continue to do that.”

Christian social commentator concerned at numbers turning to Google for answers

The tech giant revealed the number of British people this year asking this on the search engine has increased by 150 per cent over the last decade.

Speaking on Premier’s News Hour, Mal Fletcher said he wasn’t surprised by Google’s annual Year in Search compilation, which also crowned Prince Harry’s fiancée Meghan Markle as the top most searched term in the UK for 2017.

Speaking to Premier he did have some concerns.

“As our lives become more mobile, what were traditionally proximate relationships become more distant,” he said. “That means more and more of our relationships are mediated using gadgets and screens.

“We have fewer opportunities to actually sit with someone and ask their advice face-to-face.”

The UK election featured heavily in the list of top “What is…?” queries, with people asking about a hung Parliament and the Democratic Unionist Party.

Fletcher said the online list raises an important question.

He said: “The more important question is ‘what does an overreliance on technology mean for the future of human beings generally’?

“That affects the way people of faith will communicate with human beings.

“I think the answer begins with simple things like limiting the time we spend interacting with gadgets so that we make space for face-to-face human interactions.

Andrew Wommack’s Daily 14 December 2017 Devotional: Value Christ Higher Than Self

Topic: Value Christ Higher Than Self [Thursday December 14, 2017]

Matthew 28:9 “And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him.”

Self-denial is embraced by much of Christianity today. Historically, self-denial has always been a big part of false religion. Most religions of the world teach an abasement of self, but they do it as penitence in order to obtain salvation. This is not the denying of self that the Bible advocates.

True self-denial as the scriptures promote is not self hatred or masochism, but rather an enthroning of Christ above self. We have a new identity in Christ that replaces the old self. We don’t deny self in order to obtain salvation, but it is a love response to what Christ has already done for us. He gave His all for us and we willingly give our all back to Him.

Denying self in an attempt to earn salvation is most always motivated by guilt and characterized by rigid rules. True Christianity, on the other hand, is not the observance of rituals, but a relationship that produces holiness as a fruit and not the root of salvation.

Holiness doesn’t come from the outside and work its way inside. When we are born again we become righteous, and we work that holiness out into our physical lives.

Trying to destroy the power of self through harsh laws actually arouses and strengthens sin. Christians must not let life become a set of rules, but rather a response to a loving relationship with Jesus Christ.
