Presbyterian Church USA’s Board of Pensions recently uncovered a fraud scheme that stole pension payments from 11 retired employees.
The Board of Pensions announced last Friday that they had uncovered the scam, which affected 57 pensioners.
Susan Reimann, executive vice president and CEO for the Board of Pensions, told The Christian Post that the fraud was a first-time experience for them.
“We haven’t been subject to a fraud scheme previously. We are constantly updating systems security, and we’re defending against online attacks every day,” said Reimann.
Reimann explained that the fraud was discovered on Dec. 1 when a retiree called the Board of Pensions to report that a direct deposit pension payment did not show up in his account.
The total amount is not being released, as it could interfere with the ongoing investigation to catch those responsible for the fraudulent payments.
“I can say that the loss was minor due to quick identification and action. The fraud amounted to a transfer of 11 monthly pension payments through direct deposit. The board’s assets were not in danger,” explained Reimann to CP.

Charles F. Stanley, the iconic Southern Baptist televangelist who has led the 13,000-member First Baptist Church Atlanta in Georgia for more than 40 years and founded In Touch Ministries, named Dr. Anthony George as his successor Sunday. But he plans to remain at the helm of the church as long as God gives him “health and strength.”
George, who has served as Stanley’s associate pastor since 2012, was named in a pastoral succession plan presented to congregants during two morning services.
“While I intend to remain the pastor as long as God gives me health and strength, this plan will be officially in place to ensure a seamless transition in leadership whenever God ordains that to occur,” the 85-year-old Stanley said in a statement on the church’s Facebook page.
That means, said Shane Baker, director of executive communications at First Baptist Church Atlanta, that if Stanley makes it to 95 or older and remains healthy he will remain as the church’s senior pastor.
“Dr. Stanley does not believe in retirement, he will tell you that retirement is not in the Bible and he has no aspirations to retire. He does not think that it is biblical,” Baker told The Christian Post Tuesday.

In an interview with Premier, Lord Pearson of Rannoch said religious freedom in the UK is being gradually eroded by hate crime legislation.
He also claimed changes in the law are part of a bid to please small minorities of “radical” Muslims.
Lord Pearson told Premier when he recently raised a question on the issue in the House of Lords the government refused to answer.
“I said to the government ‘Will they confirm unequivocally that a Christian who says that Jesus the only son of the one true God cannot be arrested for hate crime or any other offense?’ “
He said the government’s representative in the Lords refused to comment on the question.
The former Ukip leader said the reaction was “unique” and that he’s never witnessed a question being refused an answer.
He added that he does not condone personal attacks against someone of another religion but “if you’re merely criticising a religion or proclaiming your own religion, I don’t see how the law can get involved”.
According to the Crown Prosecution Service, racial and religious hate crime is defined as “particularly hurtful to victims as they are being targeted solely because of their personal identity, their actual or perceived racial or ethnic origin, belief or faith.
“These crimes can happen randomly or be part of a campaign of continued harassment and victimisation”.

Churches across the United States and Canada are holding “Blue Christmas” services meant to minister to those who are experiencing suffering or loss during the holiday season.
Service times can vary, with some congregations scheduling their “Blue Christmas” worship service for the Winter Solstice, but all focus on a major theme: helping the saddened.
Pam Kensler, director of discipleship and outreach for Living in Faith Together Parish of Fremont, Ohio, told The Christian Post that their objective was to help “those who are experiencing loss to know they are not alone during this holiday season.”
“Throughout the service we acknowledged various forms of loss from loved ones to job losses or relationships ending,” explained Kensler.
“This service was an opportunity to allow reflection and prayer, allowing for strength to build as holiday gatherings fill our calendars.”
With their service, Kensler noted that LIFT Parish wanted attendees to feel “safe in acknowledging their grief.”
