Why is a $15 toy selling for $5,000?

This New York Times headline that caught my eye: “How the Bot Stole Christmas: Toys Like Fingerlings Are Snapped Up and Resold.”

I had no idea what a Fingerling was or why I should care. Then I learned that fingerlings are “colorful chirping monkeys (and sloths and unicorns) that wrap around your finger.” They have become one of the most sought-after toys on Christmas lists.

Here’s why they are in the news: the fifteen-dollar creatures are sold out online nearly everywhere. You can’t find them at Toys “R” Us, Walmart, or Target. But you can buy them on eBay and Amazon for double, triple, and quadruple their original price. One Fingerling on eBay is advertised for $5,000.

Here’s why: popular items are being purchased by software programs as soon as they are offered for sale. These computer “bots” buy the products at a speed that humans can’t match. They also subscribe to online sales and use multiple email addresses to bypass the purchasing limits set by retailers.

Good Morning America also reported on this story, noting that a Barbie Hello Dream House which retails for $299.99 is being sold on eBay for nearly $1,700. A Nintendo video game that normally sells for $79.99 is being resold for $13,000.

Lawmakers are calling on retailers to “block the bots.” The National Retail Federation is working to “take away the tools being used against innocent customers.” But eBay explains: “As an open marketplace, eBay is a global indicator of trends in which supply and demand dictate the pricing of items. As long as the item is legal to sell and complies with our policies, it can be sold on eBay.”

    And therein lies the problem.

    The “invisible hand” of greed

In The Wealth of Nations, Scottish economist Adam Smith (1723-1790) spoke of the “invisible hand” of the market. He argued that an economy functions best in a free market scenario where everyone works for his or her own interest. If people are allowed to trade freely, self-interested traders will compete with…

Boy beaten ‘black and blue’ for catching nuns in embrace, child abuse inquiry told

The witness, who cannot be named, said he was aged six or seven when one of the nuns at Smyllum Park orphanage went “ballistic” as she physically assaulted him in the Sixties.

The Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry is hearing evidence from witnesses from the child care establishment run by the Daughters of Charity of St Vincent de Paul in Lanark.

Speaking at the inquiry, the witness said the attack left him bloody and with bruises for weeks.

He added: “I distinctly remember there was a boiler and it had a flame coming out of it, a flame thrower… she put my face really close to that.

“I can still remember my hair getting singed, my eyelashes and the smell of singeing stayed with us for quite a while after that.”

He said it wasn’t until he later saw the publicity surrounding one of television’s first lesbian kisses on the soap Brookside, that he realised why the nun had turned “so nasty”.

“She was obviously kissing another nun, that’s what I think,” he said.

Speaking about the impact of the assult, he went on to say in his witness statement: “It was terrible, it was horrendous, really bad.

“I felt threatened all the time, constantly on my toes, just always, always on guard.”

The inquiry, chaired by Lady Smith, continues.

    Pope: Change the Lord’s Prayer

The prayer, also known as Our Father, asks God to “lead us not into temptation”.

But the religious leader told Italian broadcasters he believed the wording should be altered to better reflect that it is not God who leads humans to sin.

He told channel TV2000: “It is not a good translation because it speaks of a God who induces temptation.”

He added: “I am the one who falls. It’s not him pushing me into temptation to then see how I have fallen.

“A father doesn’t do that, a father helps you to get up immediately. It’s Satan who leads us into temptation, that’s his department.”

The 80-year-old also highlighted that the Catholic Church in France had already adapted the prayer, and uses the phrase “do not let us fall into temptation” instead.

The Lord’s Prayer, which is memorised by millions of Christians across the world, appears in the Bible.

Church makes u-turn on grape juice at Communion

The church had previously replaced wine with juice to welcome recovering alcoholics.

It’s returning to wine as the vicar, Fr Paul Kish, seeks to follow Church of England canon law that says the drink used should be the “fermented juice of the grape”.

Fr Paul Kish was quoted by the Daily Telegraph as saying: “We can’t use grape juice.

“The point being at the Last Supper when Jesus says ‘do this in remembrance of me’ – we need to do the same.”

Wine was removed in 2013 under the previous vicar because of their close link with a Christian alcohol and drug rehabilitation charity, the Kenward Trust.

Fr Kish added: “It has taken a fair bit of time, careful questioning and discussion with the bishop.

“We are not making a decision, simply falling in line with what we should be doing.”

Those who do not wish to drink wine in Communion at St Peter and St Paul’s will be offered bread only.

MPs call for Franklin Graham to be banned from UK ahead of Blackpool visit

Over 5,000 people have signed a petition stating he shouldn’t be allowed into the country.

They claim he has homophobic and islamophobic views and is “likely to promote prejudice and hatred”.

The preacher, who’s the son of legendary evangelist Billy Graham, is due to speak at Blackpool’s Festival of Hope at the city’s Winter Gardens in September next year.

But after recent endorsements of Donald Trump and what has been seen as inflammatory statements about Islam, many are unhappy about the visit.

Labour MP Gordon Marsden is calling on the home secretary to refuse him entry into the UK.

Speaking to BBC Lancashire, he said some of his previous comments were “incompatible with what Jesus said in the Bible”.

His visit is however is being supported by many local church leaders.

Franklin Graham has led evangelism events across the world in his role as president of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.

He’s also reached millions of people through his aid work with the charity Samaritans Purse.

In a statement to Premier, the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association said: “The Billy Graham Evangelistic Association is working in partnership with local churches to hold this event next year in Blackpool.

“It will be a positive and encouraging event with music and also a message from Franklin Graham about the hope that can be found through a relationship with Jesus Christ. It will be free and everyone is invited to attend.”

Christian family forced to watch murder of six year old daughter

Waris and Reena Masih from Faisalabad borrowed 40,000 rupees from a local lender to pay for home repairs and the arrival of their baby daughter.

When they were unable to keep up with the interest payments, a gunman reportedly visited their home.

It’s claimed he started firing at Waris from afar but ended up hitting daughter Myra, aged six, in the head and the shin.

Masih says after rushing to seek medical treatment, he was turned away by one hospital and it was too late by the time they arrived at the second.

Speaking about her loss, Reena said: “I cannot express the pain. I feel deeply depressed and find it hard to carry on. I feel as if I have failed my daughter.

“It is my responsibility to my remaining children and my husband that keeps me going and the knowledge that God is now caring for my daughter in heaven where one day I will see her again and ask her to forgive me.

“I will cry and mourn my daughter every day till the day I am reunited – she will never be forgotten.”

Wilson Chowdhry, Chairman of the British Pakistani Christian Association (BPCA), said: “Living in Pakistan as a Christian is in most cases a gruesome ordeal, you live life on the margins, are severely discriminated against and persecution is only around the corner.

“Incidents like this gory tale of a young child being murdered to compensate for a missed payment on a loan shark agreement, are sadly common-place. Worse still such crimes…
