Drug for Alcoholics May Soon be Used for Treating Cancer

REUTERS/National Cancer Institute/National Institutes of Health/HandoutCancer cells are seen in this undated handout image.

A drug initially used to help people with their alcohol problems may soon be used for the treatment of cancer.

While disulfiram already exhibited its potency in killing cancer cells and slowing down the growth of tumors way back in the 1970s, it did not really get attention as a cancer treatment partly because scientists could not see eye to eye on how it worked. However, a new study on the potency of the drug as an anti-cancer may finally give it the recognition it deserves.

The study, which was conducted through of the partnership of Danish-Czech-U.S. teams, led by Jiri Bartek, of the Danish Cancer Society Research Center in Copenhagen, browsed on the 240, 000 cases of cancer between the year 2000 and 2013 in Denmark. There, it was revealed that the cancer death rate among the more than 3000 patients who took and stayed with Antabuse, the brand of disulfiram, was 34 percent lower than those who stopped taking the drug.

Apart from lengthening the lives of cancer patients, the researchers also revealed that disulfiram slowed down the growth of breast cancer tumors in mice, especially when combined with a copper supplement that boosts its effects. The use of the drug in mice also revealed that the disulfiram’s main metabolite, ditiocarb, forms a complex with copper, blocking the machinery that cells use to dispose of misfolded and unneeded proteins. Because of this, protein builds up in cancer cells, causing them to be stressed and eventually die.

R.C. Sproul Has Been Hospitalized for Respiratory Condition

R.C. Sproul Has Been Hospitalized for Respiratory Condition

R.C. Sproul, 78, influential Christian figure and founder of Ligonier ministries, has reportedly been hospitalized and is in serious condition.

Ligonier Ministries first posted about Sproul’s health on December 3, stating, “The Sproul family wanted you to know that Dr. Sproul was hospitalized yesterday due to respiratory difficulties. He is in guarded condition at the intensive care unit and receiving expert care and attention. The doctors believe this is not pneumonia, but an exacerbation of his emphysema due to the flu so he has been put on a ventilator to help his breathing. Thank you for praying for his recovery.”

The ministry posted another update on December 4, and then the most recent update on December 6. In the December 6 update, the ministry said that Sproul’s condition remains serious.

“Dr. Sproul remains in a serious condition, his breathing being supported by a ventilator. He is currently sedated as the medical staff in ICU continues to monitor his health, even as they attempt a number of techniques to eliminate any infection.”

The statement added that Sproul’s family is with him and appreciates the support and prayers they have received.

To follow updates on Sproul’s health, you can go to Ligonier Ministries website or follow their Facebook or Twitter.

Diocese defends Mohammed birthday party

The Diocese of Southwark responded after All Saints Church in Kingston-upon-Thames was accused of “glorifying” the prophet.

An Islamic prayer was recited and a birthday cake was cut during the “Milad, Advent and Christmas Celebration” at the church last Sunday.

Christian blog website, Archbishop Cranmer claimed the church was “rejoicing in both [Jesus and Mohammed], eulogising both, solemnising both, glorifying both, honouring both”.

Lasting for one hour and organised with local interfaith groups, it had been billed as an event “marking the birthday of Prophet Mohammed and looking forward to the birthday of Jesus”.

Archbishop Cranmer said: “Every time a church accords Mohammed the epithet ‘Prophet’, they are rejecting the crucifixion, denying the resurrection of Christ, and refuting that the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us, for Mohammed denied all of these foundational tenets of the Christian faith.”

A spokesperson for the Diocese of Southwark said the event “enabled Christians, Muslims and others to meet together in order to promote better understanding, conversation, and relationships.

“It was not a service and the event broke no Canon law.”

Observed in the third month of the Islamic calendar, Milad (or Mawlid) is the name of the festival to mark Mohammed’s birthday.

Prince William Shares Prince George’s ‘Funny’ Role in School Nativity Play

Prince William shared a cute anecdote about his first-born son Prince George to the press. The 4-year-old royal apparently participated in a school nativity play and he had an interesting role.

REUTERS/Richard PohlePrince George joined his school’s Nativity play and his dad shared his amusement about watching the 4-year-old.

The press wanted to know what the royal kids have done this Christmas season. The Duke of Cambridge told them during his visit at the Bridge House in Manchester last Wednesday that he recently watched Prince George in school.

“I went to my boy’s nativity play. It was funny,” Prince William shared. “He was a sheep.”

Prince George started prep school at Thomas’s Battersea in London last September. Photos and videos from his first day of school showed Prince William dropping off young royal, who looked slightly bashful while he shook hands with his teacher, Helen Haslem.

Administrators at Thomas’s Battersea said that Prince George, the third in line to the British throne, won’t get a special treatment. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge want nothing more than for their son to experience a normal childhood.

“Our aim for him, as well as for all of our pupils, is to provide a safe and secure and happy environment where he feels supported by a kind and loving community,” the school’s headmaster Ben Thomas said. “That’s all we will be trying to achieve for him. There won’t be any special treatment at all.”

Meanwhile, Prince William recently gave Prince George’s letter to Santa during his short visit to…

‘Disaster averted,’ Christian MP’s take on Brexit developments

Announcing the development at a briefing in Brussels, European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker said the “breakthrough” had been achieved after months of negotiations.

If EU leaders agree, talks on trade can go ahead.

The deal will see no ‘hard border’ in Ireland while EU citizens in the UK can go on living as before.

Speaking to Premier, Christian Labour MP Stephen Timms, who sits on the Brexit Select Committee welcomed the announcement.

“What’s happened today is that disaster has been averted and that is a good thing because if there had been a failure to agree and if we had to wait several more months to know what was going to happen in the transition period, that would have been genuinely disastrous,” he said. “But there is a lot more work to be done before anyone can say this exercise has proved successful.”

The bill for the UK to leave the EU is expected to be up to £39 billion.

Encouraging Christians to pray over the Brexit process, Timms said a good place to start was with Northern Ireland.

“[Pray] that the communities can come together and avoid the terrible conflicts of the past – that’s the specific thing. For continued peace and improving relations across the communities in Northern Ireland.

“Also for a frictionless trading arrangement for no impediments to prosperity in the UK and in the EU as a result of the longer term trading deal that’s still to be done.”

Theresa May said the process of…
