Survey: 3 in 10 White Evangelicals Will Support Trump almost No Matter What

A new survey shows that three out of 10 white evangelical Protestants in the U.S. say “almost nothing” could cause them to disapprove of President Donald Trump.

According to the survey from the nonpartisan Public Religion Research Institute, the survey, “One Nation, Divided, Under Trump,” also found that just over four in 10 white evangelicals consider themselves “weak Trump supporters” and that they could pull their support from the president.

About 11 percent of white evangelicals, meanwhile, said they were “weak Trump opponents” and their opinion could change, but 13 percent of white evangelicals said they were “strong” opponents to Trump and he could do nothing to win their approval.

The survey also showed that 72 percent of white evangelicals approve of Trump’s job performance so far. In comparison, 84 percent of Republicans approve of the president’s work.

“What struck me is that Trump supposedly got 81 percent of the white evangelical vote and he now has 72 percent approval, which means that white evangelicals are still tracking roughly what they voted,” Henry Olsen, a senior fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center, said after participating in a panel discussion about the newly released survey.

Other highlights of the survey include:

  • 49 percent of white mainline Protestants approve of Trump’s performance; 49 percent…

Canadian Schools Cancel Operation Christmas Child over Organization’s Stance on Homosexuality

Canadian Schools Cancel Operation Christmas Child over Organization’s Stance on Homosexuality

Schools in two Canadian provinces will not be allowing students to participate in Operation Christmas Child due to the organization’s stance on LGBT issues.

Operation Christmas Child is run by the Christian ministry Samaritan’s Purse. As a Christian organization, Samaritan’s Purse holds to biblical beliefs on homosexuality, which the school district trustees believe is incompatible with their school’s policies.

According to CBC News, school district trustees voted on Nov. 25 to end the school districts’ participation in Operation Christmas Child.

Students and teachers will now no longer have the opportunity to fill shoeboxes with Christmas gifts to send to children in need around the world.

Director of Education Tony Stack explained the reasoning behind the district’s decision:

“This organization is on record with its statement of beliefs that it requires its co-ordinating volunteers to sign statements of faith that are in direct conflict with our inclusive philosophy, particularly as it pertains to the LGBT community,” he said.

“For example, a child with two moms or two dads, unfortunately, has been put in the position of choosing between fitting in and partaking with other classmates in an activity, or supporting an organization opposed to the very existence of that very child’s family unit,” he…

Texas Pastors Undergo Security Training a Month after Sutherland Springs Massacre

Texas Pastors Undergo Security Training a Month after Sutherland Springs Massacre

Shooting holes in a “paper bad guy” during target practice? That’s easy.

Defending a house of worship against a real gunman? That’s a whole different story.

As he led a security training on Tuesday (Dec. 5) at a Dallas-area megachurch, Sgt. Mike Gurley warned against thinking that worshippers licensed to carry handguns can offer reliable protection.

“To assume they’re going to be effective in an active-shooter situation is comparable to giving me a set of golf clubs and expecting me to win the Masters,” the retired Dallas policeman told the crowd of 650 pastors and other church leaders.

The event, titled “Church Security in the 21st Century,” was held at the 42,000-member Prestonwood Baptist Church exactly a month after the worst church shooting in American history.

That mass shooting occurred about 300 miles south of Plano at First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs, Texas, on Nov. 5. Twenty-five members ages 1 to 77, including a pregnant woman, were killed.

Gurley, principal of the security firm Teamworks Consulting Inc., said even people licensed to carry firearms need specialized training to be able to respond to active-shooter situations.

He urged churches to develop policies for minimum training and qualifications for anyone armed with a gun and to consider involving members with law enforcement and military experience….

Can Christians Vote for ‘Lesser of Two Evils’? Reformed Pastor Has 10 Questions to Ask

(Photo: Reuters/Charles Mostoller)Delegates point to an electoral map at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, July 27, 2016.

Sometimes American Christian voters have to face situations where none of the candidates are acceptable, Reformed evangelical theologian Kevin DeYoung has said, in which case they need to consider 10 important questions.

DeYoung, who pastors Christ Covenant Church in Matthews, North Carolina, and is board chairman of The Gospel Coalition, said that his list on Monday is not about any specific candidate or contest, but comes after much debate over evangelical support for President Donald Trump and Alabama candidate for the U.S. Senate Roy Moore.

He argued that sometimes, voting is simple, as one party and its candidate aligns with a believer’s political, cultural, and ethical convictions, but in other cases the party puts up someone “you have a hard time liking at all.”

DeYoung listed 10 important questions Christians should ask themselves in that scenario, starting with the advice that if the choice is between two evils, Christians should not vote at all.

“Am I saying then we never vote? No. I’m saying that the phrase ‘lesser of two evils’ may not be the right one. Perhaps we really mean ‘the less bad of two bad…

Christian Bakers? Atheist Bakers? Cake Meets Faith at the Supreme Court

Christian Bakers? Atheist Bakers? Cake Meets Faith at the Supreme Court

What if an atheist baker refused to bake a cake for a First Communion?

What if a college with a religious affiliation didn’t want to rent out its chapel to a gay couple?

What if a makeup artist didn’t want to ready a gay couple for their wedding?

At the Supreme Court on Tuesday (Dec. 5), the justices lobbed hypothetical after hypothetical at the lawyers representing each side of Masterpiece Cakeshop Ltd. v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission, a free speech and religious rights case — and one of the most publicized of the year.

No one on either side of the dispute doubts that Colorado baker Jack Phillips’ Christian convictions drove his 2012 decision to refuse to custom-bake a wedding cake for Charlie Craig and David Mullins.

Phillips will sell gay people cupcakes, brownies and birthday cakes, but because he believes gay marriage is a sin, he won’t bake a cake for their weddings.

The Colorado Civil Rights Commission called that stance discrimination, and the Colorado Court of Appeals agreed. He is hoping the Supreme Court will give a different answer.

“It’s hard to believe,” Phillips said, tearing up outside the court after his case had been heard, that the government wants him to choose between his business “and violating my relationship with God.”

Inside the court, lawyers representing the couple said the state of Colorado merely…
