giant Advent wreath unveiled in York Minster

Measuring four metres across, it is the largest in the country and was created by more than 15 flower arrangers, according to York Minster.

School children from Minister School York in central York, gathered in the cathedral as some of the pupils helped placed one metre candles into the wreath.

It will be displayed until Epiphany on 6th January.

Around 2,000 candles will be used to illuminate the Nave on Sunday when the cathedral holds its much-loved Advent Procession.

The service will mark the start of the Advent season at the Minster, and is the first in a series of special services taking place during December.

The cathedral starts in darkness before a single flame is used to spread light throughout the congregation, with each person holding a candle and passing the flame to their neighbour, as York Minster’s clergy and choir process down the Nave from the Great West Doors.

The Guy in the Red Apron: How a Salvation Army Bell Ringer Brings Heart to the Job

The Guy in the Red Apron: How a Salvation Army Bell Ringer Brings Heart to the Job

To hear Bruce Bachman tell it, he’s  just a guy with a bell, a red apron and a heart to serve who gives a little of his time during the holiday season.

He’s just one of the thousands of volunteer bell ringers who keep alive a 127-year tradition that the Salvation Army traces to Capt. Joseph McFee, who set out a large, iron kettle in 1891 to collect funds for a Christmas dinner in San Francisco.

From Thanksgiving to Christmas, the change, bills and occasional large checks and gold coins that Americans drop into about 25,000 kettles from coast to coast amount to roughly $150 million, said Lt. Col. Ron Busroe, the Salvation Army’s national community relations and development secretary.

Some bell ringers wish passers-by a heartfelt “Merry Christmas” and hope the kettle fills. But many others, like Bachman, have honed strategies and routines to make the most of the uncompensated work — for the Salvation Army and for all who come within earshot.

Just before 10 a.m. on a busy shopping day, the 61-year-old consulting engineer arrives at a Hobby Lobby arts and crafts store with a mailbox-sized stereo, a box of Christmas CDs and a plastic baggie full of hard candy.

“I bring the candy to suck on so I don’t have to drink as much water,” Bachman explains. He knows he won’t have time for meals or bathroom breaks, so he tries to be prepared…

Jury out on man accused of Christian school sex abuse

Andrew Soper, who worked as headmaster and senior priest at the fee-paying St Benedicts School in Ealing, denies 19 offences of indecent assault and buggery against boys during the 1970s and 1980s.

The 74 year old, who was also head of Ealing Abbey between 1991 and 2000, is accused of sexual touching and using a cane to beat youngsters.

Prosecutors claimed he meted out sadistic punishments for false reasons, such as failing to use double margins or using the incorrect staircase.

Soper, who was ordained as a priest in 1970, claimed the use of discipline had been interpreted in a “sexual way” amid a “tsunami of media attention as I am named fairly frequently”.

He was extradited to England over the allegations, after fleeing Rome for Kosovo during a police investigation in Britain in 2011.

Soper later blamed “stupidity and cowardice” for fleeing, and claimed the allegations had “ruined” his life.

The jury retired after the trial which has lasted slightly less than two months.

Carl Lentz Says Old Testament Passage Forbidding Tattoos Does Not Apply Today

(Screen Shot: Instagram)Carl Lentz poses with a Kevin Durant while on vacation, July 9, 2014.

Hillsong New York City Pastor Carl Lentz recently addressed the criticism he often receives from Christians about his tattoos.

While speaking with World Religion News in a recent interview, the popular pastor responded to a question about “conflicting or potentially conflicting Biblical passages” and how he interprets them, specifically with regard to tattoos.

“Biblical interpretation is huge right. So with tattoos not being allowed you mean Leviticus. We play both sides of the coin I think that is healthy. Like this paradox of scripture, interpretation is actually is part of our faith, the tension of it. So, on one hand, we say that is the Old Testament scripture, there is no New Testament verification of that. That law that had to do with slaves, that identified you as part of a tribe we don’t believe that came through the cross,” Lentz said.

The scripture the minister was referring to is found in Leviticus 19:28: “Do not cut your bodies for the dead, and do not mark your skin with tattoos. I am the LORD.” However, Lentz says that that specific Old Testament scripture does not apply today because of what Jesus did on the cross.

“We don’t believe that when Jesus died and rose…

Talk show host defends Christianity in feud with alleged sexual abuser Roy Moore

The accusation came after Kimmel sent a comedian to one of Moore’s rallies at a church in Alabama to be a “supportive” heckler.

The comedian, Tony Barbieri, also known as Jake Byrd, sarcastically celebrated Moore as “a man’s man”.

When he was being kicked out the rally, he yelled that he was Moore’s number one fan and continued: “Does that look like the face of someone who hits on teenage girls?”

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zfyEhAc7K_I]

Moore, who is a Christian, has been accused of sexual misconduct with young girls but denied the claims at the rally and deemed them a conspiracy from “lesbians, gays, bisexuals and socialists”.

In response to the disruption at the rally, Moore criticised the Jimmy Kimmel Live host in a tweet and invited him to fight it out.

Kimmel accepted the invitation for “a fight” and said: “There is no one I would love to fight more than you.

“I will put my Christian values aside, just for you and for that fight.”

Kimmel added: “It doesn’t fit your stereotype, but I happen to be a Christian too.

“I made my first holy communion, I was confirmed, I pray, I support my…

Born Again Christians Continue Declining, Only Minority Believe They Must Share the Gospel: Survey

(Photo: Courtesy of Passion Conference)Over 40,000 young adults filled Atlanta’s Philips Arena and Infinite Energy Center as well as Houston’s Toyota Center on Saturday, Jan. 2, 2016, for the first of the three-day Passion 2016 Conference featuring teaching and worship by Christian speakers and worship leaders. This photo is from Infinite Energy Center in Atlanta.

The percentage of born again Christians in America continues declining, a major religious survey has found. And only a minority of the faithful believe they have a strong personal responsibility to share the Gospel.

“Christianity in America is going through a time of substantial challenge. The Church at-large is not likely to grow in the future unless some fundamental changes in practice are made,” said researcher George Barna, speaking about the American Culture & Faith Institute survey results released Tuesday.

“Fewer churches emphasize and equip people for evangelism these days, and the results are obvious and undeniable. The implications of ignoring gospel outreach — especially among children, who are the most receptive audience to the gospel — are enormous. All the ‘church growth’ strategies in the world cannot compensate for the absence of an authentic transmission of the good news of what Jesus…
