10 Ways Christianity Has Made the World a Better Place

Christianity has changed the world in so many significant ways, many of which we are probably not even aware of on a daily basis. In his new book “Unimaginable: What our World Would be Like without Christianity,” Dr. Jeremiah J. Johnston explores the ways in which Christianity has impacted the world for good and also what the world would be like if not for Jesus and the values He instills in every human life. Dr. Johnston looks at the impact Christianity has had–and is having–on the world from a cultural, historical, political, and personal standpoint. Below are excerpts based on Dr. Johnston’s new book which draw attention to ten specific ways in which Christianity has influenced and changed the world for the better.

Churches Dependent on Traditional Worship Won’t Attract Young People, Risk Obscurity: Chaplain

(Photo: Wikimedia Commons/Kim Traynor)St. John’s Episcopal Church, Edinburgh, Scotland, July 9, 2010.

The Church of Scotland is risking becoming irrelevant unless it moves from traditional worship services with hymns to reaching young people using smartphone technology, according to an honorary chaplain to the queen.

The Telegraph reported on Sunday that John Chalmers, former moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, said that the Kirk — a Scottish word that refers to the official Church — is failing and unless it fundamentally revamps its approach they will not connect with younger generations.

The one-size-fits-all model of Church centered on the buildings does not attract modern worshipers, he said, and even if the Church ends up looking nothing like it used to, the tools for attracting young people are “now quite literally in our hands.”

“A whole new generation cannot be separated from their smart phones and tablets. In these there is the power to help to sustain people on their spiritual journey and nourish their inner life,” Chalmers said.

Suggesting such an overhaul was not easy for the chaplain, particularly because the “hymns and songs of faith” and the church buildings constitute the “core diet” of his faith.

“I would rather not see their…

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to marry in May at St George’s Chapel

The American actress, who will become a senior HRH on marrying into the royals, also intends to become a British citizen.

As the couple make preparations for their big day, Ms Markle, a protestant who went to a catholic high school, will be both baptised and confirmed, ready for the religious ceremony.

The royal family will pay for the wedding, including the church service, the music, the flowers and the reception, the palace said.

Harry’s communication’s secretary Jason Knauf said Windsor was a “very special place” for Harry, and that he and Ms Markle had spent time there together during their 16-month romance.

He said the couple were delighted to be holding the wedding in the “beautiful grounds of Windsor”.

Mr Knauf said the couple, who were grateful for the warm wishes from the public, would be putting their stamp on their wedding day.

“They will be making sure it reflects who they are as a couple,” he said.

Kensington Palace also revealed that Harry and Ms Markle will carry out their first official engagement together in Nottingham on Friday.

Pope Francis First Pope to Commission Investigation into Human Trafficking

Pope Francis First Pope to Commission Investigation into Human Trafficking

Margaret Archer has long been one of the world’s leading sociologists, recognized for her analysis of societal structure with awards and professorships.

Thanks to a note scribbled in Spanish from Pope Francis, the British academic is also an activist, sheltering victims of human trafficking in her English home with the help of her parish.

The note that inspired Archer to move beyond the theoretical to take concrete steps to help individual victims of trafficking came from Francis to the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences after his election in 2013.

As the academy had done after previous papal elections, it sent Francis a letter of congratulations, asking if he wanted them to investigate a particular issue. To the same query, Pope John Paul II and Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI told the academy to carry on as before.

But with Pope Francis — the third pope Archer has served since joining the Vatican-based think tank in 1994 and becoming its president a year later — it was different. He sent a hand-written note with a specific request, urging the academy to study the problem of human trafficking.

The papal request led to a series of conferences examining trafficking of peoples throughout the world but it also led to Archer’s realization that she could no longer do this work only on an intellectual level. She felt herself drawn to involve herself personally…

Stunning chapel at Windsor Castle a more intimate venue

Steeped in history, it offers Prince Harry and Meghan Markle a slightly more intimate venue for their nuptials, but one that is still appropriately grand for a royal wedding.

It usually holds around 800 guests compared with the 2,000 capacity of Westminster Abbey where the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge wed in 2011.

With the Queen now 91 and the Duke of Edinburgh 96, the choice will be especially convenient for Harry’s ageing grandparents, who spend a great deal of time at home in the castle.

Located within the castle’s grounds and surrounded by the Horseshoe Cloisters and the Henry VIII gate, the venue will also provide the royal family with a certain amount of privacy on the day of the wedding.

Harry was also christened in the chapel in December 1984 when he was three months old, which, according to Church of England rules, means he can also marry there.

The prince and Ms Markle’s reception could be held in the castle’s 180ft (55m) long St George’s Hall, traditionally used for glittering state banquets.

The vast hall had to be restored following the devastating fire at the castle in 1992.

The chapel, with its intricately carved stonework, magnificent fan vaulted ceiling and beautiful stained glass windows, has seen many royal weddings and funerals.

The last royal wedding was for Harry’s cousin, Peter Phillips – son of the Princess Royal – who married Canadian Autumn Kelly in 2008.

Harry’s father, the Prince of Wales, and stepmother, the Duchess of Cornwall,…

Good News for the Cause of Life: Abortion Rate Decreasing in U.S.

Good News for the Cause of Life: Abortion Rate Decreasing in U.S.

The number of abortions has reportedly dropped over the last 10 years through 2014, according to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control.

The CDC’s Abortion Surveillance report, released this month, said that 652,639 abortions were reported in 2014. In 2005, that number was 820,151.

The report also found that four women died from legal abortion in 2013.

The CDC’s report is different that the Guttmacher report released in October. Guttmacher, the former researcher for Planned Parenthood, reported 926,200 abortions in 2014.

The CDC, however, said the numbers differ because Guttmacher uses  “numerous active follow-up techniques to increase the completeness of the data obtained through its periodic national census of abortion providers.”

The CDC report used voluntary data from all states except California, Maryland and New Hampshire.

Emergency contraception use was not counted in either report.

Highlights of the report for 2014 include:

  •  Nearly 45 percent of women having abortions have already had at least one in the past.

  • Women in their 20s made up nearly 60 percent of all reported abortions.

  • White women made up about 38 percent of abortions. Black women made up about 36 percent and Hispanic women made up about 18 percent.

  • More than 90 percent of the abortions were done at gestational age of less than 13…

After Stunning Death of Gospel Singer Shawn Jones, Friend Sounds Alarm on ‘Mini-Stroke’

(Photo: Facebook/Shawn Jones)The late Pastor Shawn Jones, 32, and his family.

When gospel singer Lisa Reynolds of Headland, Alabama, got a call Saturday night that her friend, 32-year-old Alabama gospel singer and pastor Shawn Jones, had died, she was stunned.

“I was at home in the bed and I was asleep. When I woke up I realized that a lot of people had called from everywhere. My son woke me up probably about 10:15 that night. After that nobody slept,” she told The Christian Post in an interview Monday.

“It was just devastating. Nobody could believe it. Sometimes today, I still can’t believe it. One of his songs that keeps ringing in my heart, ringing in my head and I hear him sing it. ‘Lord I’m Depending on You.’ That song plays over and over in my head,” she said.

For several years, Reynolds, who is the lead singer of the gospel quartet The Female Chorus, said Jones and his band, Shawn Jones & The Believers, had performed at her group’s anniversary concerts. The late founding pastor of New Thing Empowerment Church was slated to be the headline act at her concert at Northview High School in Dothan, Alabama, on Sunday.

Jones’ fatal collapse while performing at The Event Center in Pensacola, Florida, on Saturday night (Nov. 18), however, interrupted…
