Boy, six, died ten days after beating from nun at orphanage, inquiry hears

A witness, who cannot be named, told the inquiry his friend was kicked on the body and head by the Catholic sister.

He was giving evidence at the Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry which began the second phase of its hearings in Edinburgh on Tuesday.

It is hearing evidence about institutions run by the Daughters of Charity of St Vincent de Paul.

The man said he was sexually abused by a nun and another member of staff and beaten for bedwetting and not eating his food at Smyllum Park orphanage in Lanark, Lanarkshire.

The witness entered the orphanage in 1959 when he was aged around two, along with three brothers and a sister.

He said that beatings at the institution were routine, and that on one occasion when he was aged around six his friend was beaten after playing with a match and accidentally burning his hand.

He said: “It was unfortunate but at that time the sister came around the corner and said what’s wrong and I said ‘he burned my hand’ and she just grabbed him and started hitting him and punching him.

“He was on the floor and she was kicking him on his body and his head.

“I said ‘please sister, please don’t hurt him’.

“She stopped when I lay on top of him.”

He said he next saw his friend in the sick room and the inquiry heard the boy was in hospital for around 10 days before he died.

A BBC and Sunday Post investigation earlier this year found that at least 400 children from Smyllum Park are thought to be buried in an unmarked grave at the town’s St Mary’s…

Open Heavens 29 November 2017: Wednesday daily devotional by Pastor Adeboye – Realities of Selfishness

Open Heavens 29 November 2017: Wednesday daily devotional by Pastor Adeboye – Realities of Selfishness

Topic: Realities of Selfishness — Wednesday 29, November 2017.

Memorise: For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 2 Timothy 3:2

Read: Mark 12:28-31 (KJV)

28 And one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, and perceiving that he had answered them well, asked him, Which is the first commandment of all?

29 And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord:

30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.

31 And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.

Bible in One Year: Psalm 73-77, Micah 6:9-7:7, Hymn: Sing Hymn 6 – Deeper, Deeper

MESSAGE:

On the 22nd of this month, we saw that those Christians who always want everything to revolve around them and who always want to be in charge are yet to be broken. Another sign of not being broken is selfishness. The Holy Spirit, speaking through Paul, has forewarned the Church of God that selfishness will be the hallmark of sins committed during the last days. 2 Timothy 3:2 says,
“For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,”
Selfishness is all about falling in love with oneself to a point where everyone and everything else is second place. The height of selfishness is when you love yourself to the point of idolizing yourself; this is a form of idolatry, the Holy Spirit reveals one class of such people in Philippians 3:19, where He said:
“Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.”
It’s unfortunate that a lot of selfish people are mounting the pulpit of God today, parading themselves as ministers of the gospel. Such people do not serve the God of Heaven, but rather they serve their own stomachs. The goal and desires of selfish people revolve around the mundane things of this world. They can never be heavenly-minded.
Selfishness negates God’s eternal word in Mark 12:30 which says:
“And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.”
God says you should love Him with all you have, but selfishness says “No, how can I love you when I have not even loved myself enough.” If you are a lover of self, you will always run into problems with God. To obey divine instructions and commands, you will often be required to displease yourself, and that is what a selfish person cannot do. If you are selfish, you will find it almost impossible to please God. A selfish person will hear messages on tithing but will find it difficult to tithe. Why? He would be calculating what he would lose if he gives up the tithe, and what he stands to gain from keeping those funds. A selfish person has no understanding of spiritual things. Are you controlled by love for God or by selfishness?
Key Point: As a young convert, you are to focus more on yourself in prayer. However, as you grow in the Lord, you are to focus more on others.
Hymn 6: Deeper Deeper
1. Deeper, deeper in the love of Jesus
Daily let me go;
Higher, higher in the school of wisdom,
More of grace to know.
Refrain:
Oh, deeper yet, I pray,
And higher every day,
And wiser, blessed Lord,
In Thy precious, holy Word.
2. Deeper, deeper, blessed Holy Spirit,
Take me deeper still,
Till my life is wholly lost in Jesus,
And His perfect will.
3. Deeper, deeper! though it cost hard trials,
Deeper let me go!
Rooted in the holy love of Jesus,
Let me fruitful grow.
4. Deeper, higher, every day in Jesus,
Till all conflict past,
Finds me conqu’ror, and in His own image
Perfected at last.
5. Deeper, deeper in the faith of Jesus,
Holy faith and true;
In His pow’r and soul exulting wisdom
Let me peace pursue.

Church installs indoor ice rink for Christmas

As part of their Christmas tree festival, St Wulfram’s have put in a synthetic ice rink and a toboggan run to welcome people into the church.

Rev Stuart Cradduck told Premier about the logistics of running an ice rink alongside a church.

He said: “We can put it in, in five hours and take it out in 2 hours.

“We’re still having our main parish Eucharist on the ice rink on Sunday morning.”

Congregation members will sit on chairs on the ice surrounded by the forest of trees donated by the community.

When Premier asked Rev Cradduck why they decided to do it he replied: “You tell me why I shouldn’t!

“This building has been a place of prayer and pilgrimage for centuries and it’s seen everything – it’s seen community joy and community sadness and this is a just a new way of getting people in to use the sacred space and making it common ground.

“It’s a way of challenging people to think about what church is about, what Christianity is about.”

He added: “If it provides the way into this special place and for an individual to grow in faith, it’s got to be a good thing”.

Rev Cradduck also asked peope to pray that the church continues to be bold in how it expresses its faith.

He said: “We’re a community which is traditional but full of wanting to share God’s love in the heart of Grantham with everybody”.

Scientists Say Cardio Training Does Not Help Shed The Pounds

REUTERS/Crunch FitnessA Tabura group fitness class at Crunch Fitness in New York in an August 2012 photo.

Doing cardio exercises alone will not result in weight loss, a new research has revealed.

While many people engage in a lot of cardio exercises in hopes to shed some excess pounds, a new study has revealed that exercising alone will not do the trick in losing weight. According to the findings of the latest study, people who do cardio exercises three times a week for eight weeks will not have a significant drop in their weight as long as they don’t alter their diet.

“To be effective, exercise training for weight loss needs to be integrated into a lifestyle approach to weight loss, including exercise combined with diet…Seeing no change on (the) scales may be enough to make people give up on their exercise training, not realizing that they have actually improved their body by gaining muscle mass,” said Dr Hans-Peter Kubis from Bangor University, co-author of the study.

The study on the effect of cardio exercises on weight loss was participated by women, aging between 18 and 32, who engaged in circuit exercise training programs three times a week for between 45 and 90 minutes per session. Within the period of the study, 34 women were asked to exercise for four weeks while the 36 others were told to stick to the program for eight weeks.

Prior to and after the study, the hormone levels, fat, muscle, and weight of the participants were all recorded, and they were told that the study was meant to determine the impact of exercises on their brain and heart health and was not about weight loss….

Chip Gaines Shares Tweet That Sparked End of ‘Fixer Upper’

Chip and Joanna Gaines, the popular stars of the HGTV series “Fixer Upper” made news recently by announcing the end of their home improvement show.

The couple previously stated that they would be focusing their time and energy on their family and their business: “This is just us recognizing that we need to catch our breath for a moment. Our plan is to take this time to shore up and strengthen the spots that are weak, rest the places that are tired and give lots of love and attention to both our family and our business.”

Now, Chip has revealed the tweet from a customer which made the couple rethink their priorities and ultimately signalled the end of “Fixer Upper.”

According to HelloChristian.com, Chip shared in his book Capital Gaines: Smart Things I Learned Doing Stupid Stuff, that one day he received a tweet from a customer which said, “Hey @chippergaines it’s been 3 weeks, and I still haven’t gotten my wreath. What’s up?!”

Although it may seem like a small tweet among the many that Chip receives, it stuck with him and got him thinking.

“I tried to shake it off, knowing that I couldn’t do anything about it then and that it would have to wait until morning. No luck. I was up all night dwelling on it,” he recalls.

That tweet truly made him realize that “Fixer Upper” was taking away time from their business and the service they wanted to provide to their…

Medical Breakthrough in Treatment Using Survivors’ Cells

REUTERS/National Cancer Institute/National Institutes of Health/HandoutCancer cells are seen in this undated handout image.

A radical new treatment for cancer will be tested on humans next year, and the process will involve the introduction of the neutrophil cells, which are considered as the body’s first line of defense, into a cancer patient’s body.

The use of neutrophil has been proven to be effective in laboratory mice, and the British company, Lift BioSciences, has announced that it is already preparing for the testing of the said method to human cancer patients in 2018.

“We’re not talking about simply managing cancer. We’re looking at a curative therapy that you would receive once a week over the course of five to six weeks. Based on our laboratory and mouse model experiments we would hope to see patients experiencing complete remission. Our ultimate aim is to create the world’s first cell bank of powerful cancer-killing neutrophils,” Alex Blyth, chief executive of Lift BioSciences, said.

Blyth pointed out that the major advantage of neutrophils is that a donor’s cell can be given to any cancer patient without the recipient’s body seriously rejecting it. After all, neutrophils can only live inside the body for five days and eventually disappear even before a recipient’s immune system can react to them.

Although meutrophils may sometimes fail to recognize cancer cells as foreign and can even protect other tumors from immune responses, they are highly efficient as tests have shown that 95 percent of cancer cells can be wiped out within 24 hours.

While laboratory tests showed that…

A Minority of Americans—Mostly Christians– Believe Gender is Determined at Birth

A Minority of Americans—Mostly Christians– Believe Gender is Determined at Birth

A majority of Christians believe that a person’s gender is determined at birth, while the majority of religious “nones” disagree, reports The Washington Examiner.

This information was gathered from a poll conducted by the Pew Research Center. The data collected from the poll shows a huge divide in opinion between Christians and others on the issue of gender and transgenderism.

According to the poll, 63 percent of Christians “say that whether someone is a man or a woman is determined by their sex at birth,” while 62 percent of religious “nones”–those who have no particular religious affiliation–say “a person’s gender is not necessarily determined by the sex they are assigned at birth.”

Although a majority of Christians from all denominations affirmed that one’s gender is determined at birth, the denominations that most strongly affirmed this were white evangelicals (84 percent) and Black Protestants (59 percent).

Conversely, only 37 percent of religiously unaffiliated survey participants said one’s gender is determined at birth, while 29 percent of atheists/agnostics affirmed the same.

Another aspect of the poll looked at how different groups viewed transgenderism in culture. Thirty-nine percent of Christians said society had gone too far in accepting transgender people, while 65 percent of atheists/agnostics said society had…
