Church of Sweden recommend gender neutral pronouns for God

The move is one of several taken by the national Evangelical Lutheran church in updating a 31-year-old handbook setting out how services should be conducted in terms of language, liturgy, hymns and other aspects.

The decision was taken at the end of an eight-day meeting of the church’s 251-member decision-making body, and takes effect from May 20 on the Christian holiday of Pentecost.

A former state church, headquartered in Uppsala, some 37 miles north of the capital, the church has 6.1 million baptised members in a country of 10 million.

It is headed by a woman, Archbishop Antje Jackelen.

Ms Jackelen told Sweden’s TT news agency a more inclusive language had already been discussed at the 1986 conference.

“Theologically, for instance, we know that God is beyond our gender determinations, God is not human,” Ms Jackelen was quoted as saying by TT.

The change was met with criticism, however.

Christer Pahlmblad, an associate theology professor with Sweden’s
Lund University, told Denmark’s Kristeligt Dagblad that the move was “undermining the doctrine of the Trinity and the community with the other Christian churches”.

“It really isn’t smart if the Church of Sweden becomes known as a church that does not respect the common theology heritage,” he said.

Christian charity concerned people will overspend on Black Friday

Experts have predicted the American imported tradition, which sees heavy discounts in stores and online a day after Thanksgiving, will be the biggest ever weekend of spending.

On Friday alone, spending of up to £2.6 bn is expected – an 8 per cent increase on last year.

Helen Webb from Christians Against Poverty told Premier it’s important for people to plan in advance how much they’re willing to spend to avoid buying what they don’t need.

She explained: “Bag a bargain – if you’ve done your research and you think that’s a really good price for an item and it’s actually what you need for yourself or you want to give it to someone else for a Christmas present or a birthday present.

“But the key thing is here is doing your research and making sure… it’s actually what you want to buy.”

Retailers are relying on a successful weekend and are hoping consumers will continue to spend confidently despite the first rise in interest rates in 10 years and a squeeze on disposable income driven by rising inflation and stagnant wage growth.

A number of big-name chains such as John Lewis, Game, Tesco and Argos have extended their high street opening hours and many retailers have already offered days of deals in a bid to maximise hype and spending around the global event.

Webb expressed to Premier her concern about people ending up in debt.

She said: “Borrowing is cheap but obviously we’re seeing the base rate is going up at…

‘Fixer Upper’ changes Waco and beyond

Note: Our office is closed today, but I hope this reflection will help you celebrate Thanksgiving every day.

The last season of Fixer Upper started Tuesday. But Chip and Joanna Gaines’s lifestyle empire will continue long after they leave their incredibly successful television show.

Remarkably, their Magnolia Market at the Silos is even more popular than the Alamo.

When they bought the property that is now the heart of their amazing business, few would have imagined that it would become what it is. But they engaged in “reframing,” a psychological technique by which we choose to view circumstances in a different light. Chip and Joanna do this with each house they transform, turning what it is into what it could be.

Reframing is essential for every dimension of life in this fallen world. Consider the biblical injunction to “give thanks in all circumstances” (1 Thessalonians 5:18). How can we be grateful in all circumstances, both challenging and joyful?

Note that the text does not call us to give thanks for all circumstances. Jesus wept at the grave of Lazarus; he sweat blood in Gethsemane; he cried out in lonely agony on the cross.

Rather, it calls us to give thanks in all circumstances. We can reframe any challenge, no matter how difficult, to find a reason for gratitude.

Consider three examples.

North Korea

On Monday, the Trump administration designated North Korea as a state sponsor of terrorism. The Treasury Department then announced new sanctions against the Communist regime. Experts continue to warn that the rogue nation could soon develop the ability to strike the continental US with a nuclear warhead.

We can be frightened by this escalating crisis. Or we can choose to be grateful for those who are working on ways to understand the threat and stop North Korean missiles.

Political angst

Rancor in American politics is more heated than I can ever remember. One study reports that politically divided families cut their Thanksgiving celebrations…

UK union leader in bid to sign catholic church up to economic justice alliance

Frances O’Grady, general secretary of the TUC, will join labour movement leaders at a two-day meeting studying the injustices suffered by workers around the world.

She will say: “The Catholic Church and trade unions both understand that much more can be achieved together than alone.

“We share values of community, dignity and social solidarity, values that bind us together as workers, citizens and human beings.

“Together, we can improve working lives and put dignity for working people ahead of market forces and freedom of capital.

“We can build a popular alliance for economic justice, in Britain and around the world.

“So speak out and support the courageous workers who stand up against injustice.

“Call on your congregation to join a union, and encourage Catholic employers to do the right thing and recognise trade unions.”

Private faith school standards slump

Ofsted revealed on Thursday that 49 per cent are now rated as below ‘good’, while 26 per cent have been deemed ‘inadequate’.

The figures include private faith schools which are not affiliated with the Independent Schools Council.

Inspectors say a fresh focus on leadership and British values, under new standards implemented three years, is one factor behind the decline.

Ofsted said: “The new standards on fundamental British values look at requirements in relation to written policies on the curriculum, the quality of teaching and the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of pupils.

“While numbers are small, a higher proportion of the weaker faith schools are failing on these requirements when compared to those with no faith.”

The number of UK independent faith schools, which are fee-paying and usually smaller than other schools, now number slightly more than 1,000.

One third of private Christian schools were rated less than good, while 81 of 139 Muslim ones were rated as ‘requiring improvement’ or ‘inadequate’.

Of the 58 independent Jewish schools, more than 50 per cent were deemed to be below good.

All schools are required to model and teach British values, following the Trojan horse affair when concerns were raised that a small number of schools in Birmingham were propagating Islamist ideology.

Ex-Church of Scotland leader thrilled by OBE

Very Rev Dr Lorna Hood was honoured for “exceptional and long service to the Church of Scotland” and “promoting tolerance and understanding” through raising awareness of the 1995 Srebrenica massacre in Bosnia.

She said: “It has been a wonderful day shared with my husband Peter and our children, Laura and Michael.”

Collecting her award the day after Ratko Mladic was found guilty of genocide and other atrocities during the 1990s Bosnian war, Dr Hood the occasion was “very poignant”.

She added: “Important though Mladic is, he is but one man in a web of violence and slaughter that spread over Srebrenica and other towns and villages in the region.

“As yet those thousands who carried out his orders remain at large often living in the same communities and in positions of responsibility.”

Dr Hood, who served as Moderator at the Church of Scotland’s General Assembly between 2013 and 2014, established the Scottish board of the charity Remembering Srebrenica.

She dedicated the award to the Mothers of Srebrenica organisation and survivors of the killings who have spoken out against hate and intolerance.

Dr Hood first visited Srebrenica in 2013, when she visited the location of the massacre and met the mothers of some of the victims.

Seven Ways Mentoring Can Transform Your Church

Podcast Episode #383

SUBSCRIBE: iTunesRSSStitcherTuneIn RadioGoogle Play • iHeart Radio

We often think of mentoring as passing on life skills. While that’s true, in the church it can be used to pass on spiritual disciplines as well. Today, Regi Campbell joins us to share how mentoring can help re-energize churches and ministries.

Some highlights from today’s episode include:

  • A mentoring program keeps retirees involved in the ministry of the church.
  • Men in the church want to be challenged. They want the bar raised.
  • “Evangelism is not as much an event but a process.”
  • “We all have a deep need to belong to something.”

The seven transforming values of mentoring we discuss are:

  1. Engaging the older wiser men with the next generation gets them and keeps them in the game
  2. Men want to be challenged to a higher bar
  3. Mentors are people who embody Jesus
  4. The power of a transparency and vulnerability in a mentoring group
  5. Discovering Biblical truth together through reading and Scripture memory
  6. Experiencing authentic community – creating a brotherhood
  7. Purposeful church engagement for mentored people – directing them to ‘pay it forward’ in the local church.

About Regi Campbell

Joyce Meyer’s Daily 24 November 2017 Devotional: You Can Come Over Anytime

Joyce Meyer's Daily 24 November 2017 Devotional: You Can Come Over Anytime

Topic: You Can Come Over Anytime [Friday November 24, 2017]

But we are able to see Jesus, Who was ranked lower than the angels for a little while, crowned with glory and honor because of His having suffered death, in order that by the grace (unmerited favor) of God [to us sinners] He might experience death for every individual person. — Hebrews 2:9

God has given us permission to fearlessly, confidently, and boldly draw near to His throne of grace. In fact, we are encouraged in Ephesians 3:12 to approach Him freely.

Through our relationship with Christ, the Holy Spirit is always with us, in our spirit. But this scripture is telling us that because we are the righteousness of God in Christ, we can be confident that God loves and accepts us all the time, and when we need His help and forgiveness, He offers them freely. We can approach Him for anything and everything we need, whenever we need to do it.

We can go to Him 200 times a day if we want to, with an “in and out” type of privilege. God doesn’t even tell us we have to knock on the door or wait for someone to say, “Come in.”

Suppose you have a friend who says, “You know what? You can come over anytime you want to come. You don’t even have to knock because you are welcome anytime, day or night. Just come on in!”

Now just think…God is saying that to you, unreservedly, which means you don’t have to be careful or hesitate or wonder if you’ve worn-out your welcome. It means even if you make some mistakes or do things you shouldn’t do, you can repent of your sins, be cleansed in the blood of Jesus, and go boldly into His presence.

Our Daily Manna November 24, 2017: ODM devotional – Turning Scars To Star – 1

Our Daily Manna November 24, 2017: ODM devotional – Turning Scars To Star - 1

Success is not measured by what a man accomplishes, but by the opposition he encountered and the courage he maintained in his struggle against opposition. Determine never to give up!

Topic: Turning Scars To Star – 1 [Friday, November 24, 2017]

Basic Scriptures: Genesis 50:14-2; Matthew 24:13

A Christian Jeremy lost his wife of five months to cancer and he asked God the question “WHY? WHY, GOD?” But he was shocked when the answer came back to him: “Son, I don’t want you to know why. I want you to walk by faith. Just keep trusting me as I turn that scar to a star in your story.” Oh, what a God! Truth is, as a child of God, you walk by faith and faith alone. If you knew exactly why God does what He does, then your faith would be useless and you would be walking with Him only by sight and never by faith.

Dear child of God, God’s plan is to turn every SCAR in your life into a STAR ( a testimony your world can relate to)! He wants to turn every HURT into HALO ( a group of stars or an aura of glory). He wants to turn that problem or past setback to stepping stones! Problems (SCARS) are as normal to life as the air you breathe. Truth is, without them, you are abnormal! It is in the process of solving problems that your real gifts, talents and calling are revealed.

All of us have SCARS, memories from our unhappy past. SCARS are ugly, and they stick on year after year. Some refuse to go away even after some major ‘plastic surgery.’ Our SCARS tell how strong we are, for having to wade through those horrible times that may not be meant for someone else. You may cover scars on your face or body, but that is no way to cover the SCARS in your heart. These scars either make you or break you! Let the SCARS be your experience.

Let them be our guiding stars! One retired teacher, blind in one eye, offered to donate his healthy eye for research. Can you beat that? Oh, I remember Stella Joyce of Stella Studios now: “When life hands you a box of negatives, develop them.” The fact that you have problems show that you are dangerous to the devil. He reads your star and once he can guess that your destiny is great, he keeps attacking! But to his shame, God will turn what was meant for bad, to your good (Gen. 50:20)!

Success is not measured by what a man accomplishes, but by the opposition he encountered and the courage he maintained in his struggle against opposition. Determine never to give up! Refuse to turn that SCAR to a SORE ( self-pity/depression)! Stop scratching the scar! For example, instead of crying, start a children’s club if you don’t have children yet. Femi Kuti today, is an international anti-AIDS campaigner because his father, Fela Anikulapko Kuti, died of AIDS!

As 2017 ends and 2018 begins, do a study of any area of your life where you messed up in the past or where you are experiencing pain/delay presently and help your generation to win over it! Success is going from failure to failure till you win! Turn that scar to a shining star for all! (Part 2 is in the upcoming 2018 January edition)!

Prayer Points: Take any song of worship as led.

1. Lord, turn every SHAME to FAME, every SCAR to STARS! Pray about any issue(s) depressing you!

2. Pray about today now! Lord, use my life as Your GLORY LAND!
