London welcomes first purpose-built Anglican church in 40 years

The official launch of St Francis at the Engine Room on the new Hale Village housing development in Tottenham Hale was also attended by local MP David Lammy.

Priest Missioner at the church, Fr Andrew Williams said: “After four years working from our temporary space it is wonderful to move into our permanent home, a community centre and church from which to base our work in the wider community of Tottenham Hale.”

The congregation, which has grown to 500 weekly attendees since the church was founded in 2013, had been meeting at the old Engine Room community centre in Hale Village.

Rt Revd Rob Wickham, the Bishop of Edmonton said: “I am delighted to see that God’s vision for Tottenham has a new face, a fact made possible by years of hard work from the parishioners of St Francis at the Engine Room, London City Mission and a host of partners.

“St Francis is a shining example of God’s desire for all Londoners to flourish, and one that will inspire many imitators as we continue to love and serve through worship, prayer, listening and play, energised by the good news of Jesus Christ.”

St Francis forms part of the Diocese of London’s strategy to create 100 new churches in 2020 and is one example of how church leaders are keen to explore opportunities to create churches alongside new housing developments.

Martina Kwapong, Church Community Worker at St Francis at the Engine Room, said: “St Francis at the Engine Room has become a busy place for making friends and…

Open Heavens 23 November 2017: Thursday daily devotional by Pastor Adeboye – Christ Our Rest

Open Heavens 23 November 2017: Thursday daily devotional by Pastor Adeboye - Christ Our Rest

Topic: Christ Our Rest — Thursday 23, November 2017.

Memorise: Say ye to the righteous, that it shall be well with him: for they shall eat the fruit of their doings. – Isaiah 3:10

Read: 2 Corinthians 1:19-20 (KJV)

19 For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, even by me and Silvanus and Timotheus, was not yea and nay, but in him was yea.

20 For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.

Bible in One Year: Psalm 38-43, Jonah 4, Hymn: Sing Hymn 2 – What A Friend We Have In Jesus

MESSAGE:

There is a time to work and a time for rest. Everyone who labours very hard always looks forward to a time of rest. Rest is so crucial that even God Himself rested after spending six days creating the heavens and the earth. It is therefore not a mistake that God programmed sleep into our body system. He knows that after we have worked hard and are tired, we would need to rest the body in order to get back on our feet. Psalm 127:2 says,

“It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep.”

You are reading Open Heavens 23rd November 2017: Thursday daily devotional by Pastor Adeboye – Christ Our Rest

Good sleep is indeed a blessing from God. However, rest for the body is not as important as the rest needed by the soul. If your mind is seriously troubled over an issue, even when you lie down on your bed, you will be unable to sleep. The only place to find rest for your soul is in Christ. No wonder He made a call for you to enter into His rest in Matthew 11:28-30. Have you been worried or troubled lately? Receive rest today in Jesus’ Name!

“Say ye to the righteous, that it shall be well with him: for they shall eat the fruit of their doings”. Isaiah 3:10

One major reason why you as a true believer should be at rest is because of God’s promises. According to our Bible reading, the promises of our God are very reliable. Romans 3:4 says that even if all men are liars, this cannot compel our God to be a liar like them; He will always remain true. Therefore, if He says your tomorrow will be alright, take it as a report card that you are getting even before sitting for the examination. If He said it, He will surely do it. God’s word has integrity. Based on His words that cannot fail, I know my tomorrow will be alright. Irrespective of the raging storm, I will simply rest in Him. Beloved, let Jesus Christ be the One you lean on. Who or what you lean upon in the time of trouble is very important. If you lean on human beings, they will most likely compound your situation because every human being is prone to failure due to so many factors within and outside their control. In contrast, if you lean on the Eternal Rock of Ages, you can be assured of true rest, joy and peace.

Action Point: Take every issue that is bothering your soul before the throne of grace today. Ask Jesus, the giver of rest, to give rest to your soul.

Hymn 2: What A Friend We Have In Jesus

1. What a friend we have in Jesus,
All our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer!
Oh, what peace we often forfeit,
Oh, what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer!

2. Have we trials and temptations?
Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged—
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
Can we find a friend so faithful,
Who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness;
Take it to the Lord in prayer.

3. Are we weak and heavy-laden,
Cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Savior, still our refuge—
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
Do thy friends despise, forsake thee?
Take it to the Lord in prayer!
In His arms He’ll take and shield thee,
Thou wilt find a solace there.

4. Blessed Savior, Thou hast promised
Thou wilt all our burdens bear;
May we ever, Lord, be bringing
All to Thee in earnest prayer.
Soon in glory bright, unclouded,
There will be no need for prayer—
Rapture, praise, and endless worship
Will be our sweet portion there.

Missed opportunities over problem behaviour, Ann Maguire inquest jury says

Mrs Maguire, 61, was stabbed to death by 15-year-old Will Cornick at Corpus Christi Catholic College, in Leeds, in April 2104.

A jury at Wakefield Coroner’s Court returned a conclusion of unlawful killing on Wednesday.

The jury added: “Overall communication leading up to the incident was inadequate.

“There were missed opportunities to share and record problem behaviour. “

It also said: “The safeguarding policy was not followed as no ’cause for concern’ was recorded around the pupil’s use of alcohol.”

Parliament lights up red to show solidarity with persecuted Christians

The Houses of Parliament, Lambeth Palace, Westminster Cathedral and nine cathedrals around the country will all be floodlit red to show solidarity with persecuted Christians around the world.

People wanting to show support for Aid to the church in Need (ACN) and Christian Solidarity Worldwide’s #RedWednesday campaign also joined in by wearing red.

A red double-decker bus visited iconic landmarks and places of worship across London as part of the campaign.

Mervyn Thomas, Chief Executive of Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW) told Premier why the charity decided to back the campaign.

He said: “We immediately recognised that this was a very simple idea but actually could have great impact to raise awareness for the problem there is around the world, which sadly, the media and general public know very little about.”

The campaign follows ACN’s recent study called ‘Persecuted and Forgotten’ which revealed that Christianity is on the brink of being wiped out in certain countries.

John Pontifex, who co-authored the Christian study, told Premier aboard the bus why the colour red is so significant.

He explained: “In church services, red is associated with the blood of those who suffer for their faith.

“So we think of those people who’ve given their lives … being executed, or being stoned to death.

People with Depression and Social Anxiety Have Thicker Anterior Cingulate Cortex, Research Reveals

REUTERS/Darren StaplesA man holds the antidepressant drug Prozac, also known as fluoxetine, in Leicester, central England February 26, 2008 in this posed photograph.

A research has revealed that people with depression and social anxiety share some common specific structural abnormalities in the brain.

A study conducted by researchers from Sichuan University in Chengdu in China has examined the high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) brain scans of 37 people with major depressive disorder (MDD), 24 with social anxiety disorder (SAD), and 41 people in good health. Looking for the differences in the gray matter of the brain by focusing on the thickness of the cerebral cortex, which is the outer tissue layer of the brain where processing of information happens, it was revealed that those with MDD and SAD have one part of their cortex, the anterior cingulate cortex, thicker than those patients with regular health.

While it remains unclear what the significance of the discovery is, Dr. Youjin Zhao, one of the researchers, suspect that it may have something to do with the compensatory mechanism of the brain. Nonetheless, the doctor also opined that the discovery may imply something else.

“Greater anterior cingulate cortical thickness could be the result of both the continuous coping efforts and emotion regulation attempts of MDD and SAD patients,” Dr. Zhao said.

Whatever the relevance of the discovery is, it is hoped that it will play an important role in the development of a more effective treatment for depression in the future. After all, based on records, more than 16 million…

Christian MPs react to budget announcement

The highlights of the budget include:

    • Getting rid of stamp duty first-time buyers on properties up to £300,000
    • At least £44 billion of capital funding, loans and guarantees to support the housing market.
    • Plans to hike road tax for diesel cars
    • £3 billion to prepare for Brexit
    • £1.5 billion package to cut the waiting period for Universal Credit payments

Andrew Selous, Conservative MP for South West Bedfordshire, told Premier several announcements pleased him.

He said: “The reduction of stamp duty for young people, the extra £ 44 billion going into building all the houses we need, boosting the national living wage, these are all much needed things.”

However, there was some criticism of the budget.

Alex Cunningham, Labour MP for Stockton North, told Premier this is still a worrying time for the UK economy because business investment, growth forecast and productivity are down.

He added: “Apart from tax allowances there was nothing for struggling families at all.

“We want to see investment through local authorities into local services.

“We want to see very decisive action taken on public sector pay and there was nothing there about public sector pay apart from a review into the pay of nurses.

Pikachu Talk Turns Amazon Echo, Google Home, Into Talking Pokemon

REUTER/Peter HobsonThe Amazon Echo, a voice-controlled virtual assistant, is seen at its product launch for Britain and Germany in London, Britain, September 14, 2016.

With today’s latest tech trend being smartspeakers that feature interactive assistants, why not liven it up a bit by adding a touch of pop culture. The Pokemon Company has announced a new app that can transform that boring old Amazon Echo or Google Home into everyone’s favorite Pokemon, Pikachu!

Dubbed “Pikachu Talk,” the app will be available in Western markets for the Amazon Echo and Google Home starting next year. The app will upgrade the device’s interactive assistants allowing them to speak in Pikachu’s voice. They can also giggle and laugh which is pretty adorable to say the least.

The doesn’t really add much in terms of functions to the assistants but as far as Pokemon fans are concerned, it’s definitely a dream come true to be able to talk to a Pokemon. It’s also a nice change for those tired of the robotic-sounding voice that comes from their interactive assistants.

Pikachu Talk is already available in Japan. It was there that an owner of both the Amazon Echo and Google Home discovered that when the two devices that were both installed with the app are placed to each other, the Pikachus start talking to each other. There’s even a video of it which you can check via Twitter.

    Pokemon is currently a hot…
