Pope auctions Lamborghini to support Christians in Iraq

Part of the funds raised from the auction at Sotheby’s will go to Catholic charity Aid to the Church in Need (ACN )to help with its work rebuilding Christian settlements on the Nineveh Plains destroyed by Islamic State (IS).

The project helps displaced Christians, who have been dependent on emergency aid since 2014, to go back to their original towns and villages.

Alfredo Mantovano and Alessandro Monteduro, president and director of ACN (Italy), said in a statement: “We have thanked the Holy Father and assured him that we will use his gift well – by bringing thousands more Christians back to Nineveh.”

The sleek, white car with yellow-gold markings was delivered to the Vatican on Wednesday morning.

ACN has thanked the sports-car maker Lamborghini.

The president and director of ACN (Italy) stated: “The gift to the Pope by the car manufacturer is a good example of how big companies can actually help Christians who suffer.”

The funds will also benefit two other charities; one helps migrant women who are victims of modern day slavery and prostitution, and the other helps those stricken by poverty in Africa.

Eight Ways Churches Can Leverage the Ubiquity of Smartphones

By Jonathan Howe

In 2011, smartphones were almost a novelty. Just 35% of American adults had one. That number has more than doubled in the past six years, and more than 9 in 10 adults under 30 have a smartphone (via Pew Research). When someone is considering a new phone, the question is no longer “will I get a smartphone?” but “which smartphone will I get?”

Now that this device has become almost attached to us 24-7 (I’ll be the first to admit, I’m tethered to mine), how is the church adapting? Or better yet, how should the church adapt and engage the smartphone? Here are eight ways.

  1. Live streaming. When the TV became prevalent in the 1950s, churches began television ministries. Many of those still exist but for most churches they are cost prohibitive and provide little return on the investment required. However, live streaming for smartphones can be implemented at a fraction of the cost and often has a greater reach than television ministries.
  2. Social media. This is an obvious inclusion. The rise of social media coincided with the rise of the smartphone. They go together like peanut butter and jelly or spaghetti and maple syrup. If your church is not active on social media, you’re missing a huge opportunity to engage your members and guests.
  3. Mobile friendly website. There is no excuse for a church not to have a good, well designed website. Not only should a website contain pertinent information, it should display well on a phone. This is also something to consider when creating…

Oprah sings ‘I Surrender All’ hymn on talk show

The billionaire megastar opened up in an interview on the Harry Connick Jr show about prayer and faith, and responded to criticism of what her beliefs are.

She explained: “You know what my prayer is? My prayer is, ‘Use me’.

“I used to pray that prayer every day. When you pray that prayer you will be met with the answer.”

The talk show host, actress, producer, and philanthropist also shared a time in her life that she doubted her abilities.

During this time, she said the song by Judson W Van DeVenter helped her to trust God would help her.

Speaking about the hymn, she said: “This song is so important to me because I never wanted anything more than I wanted to be in the film The Color Purple.

“And I had been told that I wasn’t going to be in the film.

“And I had gone away and I was running around on the track one day and I was just praying and often this is what I know happens – when you can surrender it to the power that’s greater than yourself, whatever it is you’ve been pushing up against, whatever it is you’ve been fighting, you release it to that which is greater, which is God and things show up.”

Ms Winfrey said she prayed and sang the song and then got a call that Stephen Spielberg – the director of the big-screen adaptation of the book – wanted to meet her in his office.

She made her on-screen debut as Sofia on the 1985 film shortly after landing her own talk show.

Ms Winfrey ended her segment on the talk-show by singing ‘I surrender all’ as the…

What are we to make of the latest allegation of sexual assault being leveled against Alabama senatorial candidate Judge Roy Moore? Did he really force himself on girls as young as 14 and 16 when he was in his 30s?

It’s easy to lose sight of the seriousness of these charges in the midst of the political circus unfolding before our eyes. Will the Republicans…

CEO wants his company to make more mistakes

If you don’t think you have high blood pressure, this story may change your mind. Or cause your blood pressure to rise.

New guidelines from the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology define high blood pressure as 130/80 or greater. Under this standard, the number of adults with hypertension will rise to 103 million from 72 million under the previous standard.

Stress causes blood pressure to rise. And fear of failure causes stress. Therefore, learning to manage our fear of failure is a healthy idea.

Failing to succeed

This topic is on my mind today after reading a surprising Harvard Business Review article. The writer quotes James Quincey, CEO of Coca-Cola Co., who says: “If we’re not making mistakes, we’re not trying hard enough.”

Reed Hastings, CEO of Netflix, told a technology conference that his company has too many hit shows. “We have to take more risk . . . to try more crazy things . . . we should have a higher cancel rate overall.”

Jeff Bezos, arguably the most successful entrepreneur in the world, adds: “If you’re going to take bold bets, they’re going to be experiments. And if they’re experiments, you don’t know ahead of time if they’re going to work.”

Jerry Jones, the billionaire owner of the Dallas Cowboys, recently described his business philosophy: “There’s nobody that I’ve ever met that bats over .500 or 50-50 on making the right decisions. There’s nobody that can see around corners. Nobody can. But the guys that succeed are the ones that cut their bad decisions off quicker than others and let their good ones run longer than others.”

What do the following Forbes quotes have in common?

• Denis Waitley: “Failure should be our teacher, not our undertaker. Failure is delay, not defeat.”
• Henry Ford: “The only mistake is the one from which we learn nothing.”
• C. S. Lewis: “Failures are finger posts on the road to achievement.”
• Robert T. Kiyosaki: “Winners are not afraid of losing. But losers are….

How Pumpkin Pie Became the Holiday’s Iconic Dessert and the Emerging Alternatives to It

REUTERS/Hannah McKay/File Photo

Pumpkins are seen in a field at Foxes Farm in Colchester, Britain, October 11, 2017.

While there is no denying that pumpkin pie is the most popular dessert for Thanksgiving Day, it is not the only culinary creation that can cap a meal during the celebration.

Historians claim that the special dishes, including the pumpkin pie, Americans enjoy on Thanksgiving Day these days have nothing to do with what the Pilgrims served in 1621, the year when the popular holiday was first held. As it is believed that there was still no butter or flour making a pie crust back then, it was unlikely for pumpkin pie to be a a part of their menu back then. Rather, it is suspected that the Pilgrims back then may have made use of a hollowed out pumpkins with a filling made of milk, spices, and honey.

According to sources, the pumpkin pie’s popularity as a Thansgiving Day dessert can be attributed to popular magazine editor, Sarah Josepha Hale, who is said to have created the model menu for Thanksgiving Day in the middle of the nineteenth century, including the roast turkey, which is, likewise, said not be one of the dishes served in the first ever Thanksgiving Day.

Despite not being a part of the original Thanksgiving Day menu, there is no denying that pumpkin pie is a Thanksgiving Day staple. However, with the passing of time, it is apparent as well that the Thanksgiving Day dishes continue to evolve. While the pumpkin pie is still a top choice among Americans as their meal-capper on Thanksgiving Day, more American households opt for other sweet treats on the day.

A clear pumpkin pie…

Greggs ‘sorry’ for swapping Saviour for sausage

The country’s largest bakery chain said it was “really sorry” after a manger scene featured in the marketing campaign prompted a backlash on social media.

A spokesman told Newcastle-based newspaper, The Chronicle: “We’re really sorry to have caused any offence, this was never our intention.”

The image – which appeared in Gregg’s first ever festive calendar, entitled “Merry Greggsmas” – showed the savoury snack lying on a bed of hay surrounded by three magi.

A vicar from the village of Brunswick in Tyne and Wear told the Chronicle the Greggs had shown “total disregard and disrespect”.

Rev Mark Edwards, the vicar at St Matthew’s Church in Dinnington and St Cuthbert’s Church, said: “This seems very disrespectful towards the nativity scene.

“I would have thought Greggs was better than that, and I think if they tried that with any other faith you can imagine the outcry there would be, and rightly so.”
