Conservatives Defend Roy Moore — Invoking Joseph, Mary and the Ten Commandments

Conservative Christian supporters of Roy Moore are defending the U.S. Senate candidate against allegations of molesting a teenager decades ago — and one of them used the biblical story of Mary and Joseph to rationalize an adult being sexually attracted to a minor.

These supporters don’t expect voters will abandon Moore — a former Alabama Supreme Court chief justice and darling of a segment of the American religious right, in the Alabama race for a seat in the U.S. Senate — for the same reason they didn’t turn away from Donald Trump when several women came forward during last year’s presidential campaign with allegations he had sexually assaulted them.

“It comes down to a question who is more credible in the eyes of the voters — the candidate or the accuser,” said Jerry Falwell Jr., the president of evangelical Liberty University who has endorsed Trump and Moore, both Republicans.

“The same thing happened to President Trump a few weeks before his election last year except it was several women making allegations,” Falwell told RNS in an email. “He denied that any of them were true and the American people believed him and elected him the 45th president of the United States.”

In a follow-up email, Falwell noted Moore’s denial of the allegations, saying: “And I believe the judge is telling the truth.”

Nigerian villagers mourn British missionary’s death

Ian Squire, 57, set up an eye clinic in Enokhara, near isolated Niger Delta creeks.

Villagers dressed in black and paraded throughout the area to honour the optician from Surrey.

There were also demonstrators who were afraid of the clinic being closed because of his death.

According to the Telegraph, a demonstrator held up a sign that read: “Ian, you live, you never die, because we cherish you in our hearts.”

Squire, along with David and Shirley Donovan and Alanna Carson, were taken captive from the clinic by a gang on 13th October.

UK authorities said three of the missionaries were released, but Squire was killed. However, it’s been reported by Nigeria media that Squire died due to complications with asthma after being abducted.

According to the Nigerian Tribune, a resident said that the missionaries were offered security guards in the past but turned them down.

Comrade Michael Ogobiri said: “We had set up a local vigilante for them before, but they rejected it because they said they believed in God and they’re missionaries.

“We never believed such could happen. They’ve been here since 2007.

Two suspects in the abduction have been arrested while a third was killed in a shoot-out.

State police spokesman Andrew Aniamaka said last Thursday that the suspects were arrested in Nigeria’s oil hub of Warri the day before.

Donald Trump Continues Personal Taunts Against Kim Jong-Un

U.S. President Donald Trump continues to throw personal insults at North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, further escalating tensions between the nations.

REUTERS/Joshua RobertsU.S. President Donald Trump walks from Marine One upon his return to the White House in Washington, U.S., March 19, 2017.

During the President’s trip to Vietnam, he took to Twitter to respond to Kim’s comment about him being a dotard, a term which means old and senile.

“Why would Kim Jong-un insult me by calling me ‘old’ when I would NEVER call him ‘short and fat’,” he wrote. “Oh well, I try so hard to be his friend – and maybe someday that will happen!”

North Korea’s state media agency KCNA claims that it is Trump who is perpetuating and escalating tensions between the countries.

“No-one can predict when that lunatic old man of the White House, lost to sense, will start a nuclear war,” KCNA had said. “The world is undergoing unprecedented throes because of Trump, a notorious ‘political heretic’.”

Additionally, the nation called out citizens of the U.S. to overthrow their leader to stop such looming threats of war.

“The US had better make a decisive choice … if it does not want a horrible nuclear disaster and tragic doom,” they stated.

The U.S. is undertaking the necessary measures to defend a possible attack from North Korea. CBNC reports that the major defense contractor for the U.S. Raytheon, is working on missile defense operations.

Around 20 Standard Missile variants are produced monthly, CBNC reports. These are for both U.S. and Japanese warships stationed in the Pacific.

Longer range SM-3s missiles, as well as the…

First victims of Texas church massacre buried, church holds first service since tragedy

Richard and Therese Rodriguez were the first victims of the shootings to be laid to rest.

Hundreds of people paid their respects to the couple on Saturday who’d both survived cancer. They were among 26 people shot dead by Devin Kelley in First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs on 5th November. He later killed himself.

Meanwhile, the church held its first service since the tragedy on Sunday morning. Pastor of the church, Frank Pomeroy delivered the sermon to hundreds of people under a tent at a nearby baseball field.

According to the New York Times, he said: “This past weekend, our country was attacked, our state was attacked, our church was attacked.”

But Pomeroy encouraged the attendees by saying the power of light will always triumph over darkness.

He added: “I know everyone who lost their life that day, some of whom were my best friends, and my daughter.

“And I guarantee without any shadow of a doubt they are dancing with Jesus today. God gets the glory.”

The attendees, which were 500 strong, sang “Amazing Grace” during the tearful service.

Last week, Pomeroy announced that First Baptist Church will be demolished because it would be too painful to continue using the building as a place of worship. However, on Sunday evening, the church sanctuary was opened as a memorial for the public to pay their respects to the slain congregation.

Cathedral falcons threaten racing pigeons

The Royal Pigeon Racing Association (RPRA) has warned that an increasing amount of pigeons are dying because cathedrals are providing breeding boxes and platforms for the falcons.

Churches and cathedrals including Norwich, Salisbury and Derby Cathedrals have installed the boxes to help the number of peregrine falcons to recover and there are now an estimated 1,500 pairs across the country.

The RPRA said racing pigeons suffer from a public image problem because people associate them with feral pigeons which are classed as vermin.

The Association said racing pigeons are far from the same, being bred for their speed, stamina and homing instinct and offer being slimmer than their wild equivalents.

It said the problem is getting worse every year with the breeding boxes meaning peregrine falcons are breeding more successfully and the cathedrals’ locations are often on pigeon racing routes.

Peregrines falcons have protected legal status.

A spokesman for Salisbury Cathedral said they felt sorry for the pigeons but the peregrines would be there anyway.

Why did Hollywood ignore sexual abuse?

The Harvey Weinstein scandal has ignited a bonfire of allegations in recent weeks. The problem is so acute that the Los Angeles County District Attorney is forming a task force to evaluate sexual assault cases in Hollywood.

Over the weekend, more names were added to the list.

Benny Medina is a music executive who has managed Jennifer Lopez, Will Smith, and Mariah Carey, among others. Now he’s been accused of attempted rape. His attorneys have categorically denied the allegation.

Actress Rebel Wilson has also claimed that a male costar sexually harassed her while his friends tried to tape the encounter on their phones. She also described an incident with a “top director” who invited her to his hotel room, but she was able to escape.

We now know that many of the accused had a prior reputation for sexual immorality. Why did their colleagues and industries tolerate their behavior?

    “Art for art’s sake”

Writing for the New York Times, Amanda Hess offers an insightful answer: the “myth of artistic genius” has excused the abuse of women and other personal immorality. Hess cites a 2009 New York Times round table on the relation of artists and their work.

One artist wrote, “Being an artist has absolutely nothing–nothing–to do with one’s personal behavior.” Another responder: “Let the art stand for itself, and these men stand in judgment, and never the twain shall meet.”

Yale University professor Jonathan Gilmore quoted author William Faulkner’s claim that “a real writer wouldn’t hesitate to rob his mother if it would further his art.” Gilmore noted the conventional belief that “the artistic genius acted through transgressing, not obeying conventional principles of art. It was a short step from seeing such artists as free of artistic rules to seeing them as liberated from the rules of conduct in general.”

This claim that art has its own intrinsic value is known as “art for art’s sake.” The phrase emerged in…
