Paul Ryan condemned after calling for prayer

After news broke about the shooting in Texas last Sunday, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan tweeted, “The people of Sutherland Springs need our prayers right now.” The reaction on his Twitter feed was ferocious:

    • Someone going by the name “Count Ziggenpuss” replied, “What they need is meaningful gun control. Your prayers to the made up invisible being in the sky aren’t helping stop these repeated massacres.”
    • “5 AM RISE N SHINE” tweeted, “they dont need prayers they need gun control. A prayer won’t do [expletive deleted]. This happens every week now in this country.”
    • “Gv89” added, “They were literally in a church. Clearly prayers do absolutely nothing.”

Mr. Ryan responded to his critics: “It’s disappointing. It’s sad, and this is what you’ll get from the far secular left. People who do not have faith don’t understand faith, I guess I’d have to say. And it is the right thing to do is to pray in moments like this, because you know what? Prayer works.”

    Is American Christianity under attack?

Ridiculing Christianity began at the beginning of Christianity, when skeptics at Pentecost mocked the Spirit-filled believers and accused them of drunkenness (Acts 2:13). But slandering American Christians has clearly escalated in recent years.

Those of us who defend biblical sexuality are now branded as homophobic. People who oppose same-sex marriage are accused of hating gay people. Pro-life supporters are allegedly waging a “war on women.”

When Christian columnist Rod Dreher opposed same-sex marriage in his Dallas Morning News column, a campaign of harassment culminated in the newspaper hiring off-duty police officers to guard his home and family. When Chick-fil-A’s charitable foundation made donations perceived as hostile to LGBT rights, activists called for protests and boycotts.

Last year, Saturday Night Live mocked Christians in a parody of the film God’s Not Dead 2. Earlier skits likened Jesus to a…

Pressure for US agency to rethink ban on disaster aid to churches

Harvest Family Church in Cypress, Hi Way Tabernacle in Cleveland and Rockport First Assembly of God all sustained heavy damage from flooding after Hurricane Harvey but were told they are not eligible for FEMA aid.

As a result, FEMA is facing a federal lawsuit by the three Texas churches and President Donald Trump has indicated in a tweet that he backs the religious institution’s call for a policy change.

Other politicians have also weighed in on the debate, which began following 2012’s Hurricane Sandy citing the fact that religious institutions are often front and centre when it comes to providing support to victims of disasters.

Bruce Frazier, pastor of Rockport First Assembly of God Church, which is part of the lawsuit, told the AP why he thinks FEMA should pay for repairs at places of worship.

He explained: “It seems like the only reason churches are excluded is because they’re churches, and it just seems discriminatory to me.”

At present, religious organisations can already receive some government help in disasters, including reimbursement by local governments for sheltering evacuees.

Religiously affiliated schools, health care providers and nursing homes can also receive FEMA grants.

Christian group warns refugee children at risk of trafficking

The charity said since late August, 605,000 people have crossed the border from Myanmar into Bangladesh because of violence. As many as 60 per cent of these are children, and many have been separated from their parents.

Tanzina Akter, national coordinator, child protection at World Vision Bangladesh said: “Child protection issues are at the centre of the refugee crisis which include child marriage and child exploitation, and human trafficking.

“As different child trafficking groups are active in the region, children and adolescents, especially girls are vulnerable to trafficking.”

9-year-old Fatema had to leave her shelter with her family due to flooding in the camp. She is one of hundreds of thousands of children to flee Myanmar to Bangladesh.

World Vision has worked with a woman named Razia who fled Myanmar with her husband and children.

Her and her four-year-old daughter, Fiza, have had their names changed for security reasons.

Razia said Fiza was almost taken by a stranger in the middle of the night.

She told World Vision: “There are no permanent walls on the sides of the tent.

“From one side it’s completely open. The shelter walls are so thin anyone can rip it open.

“We were all asleep. I keep the little one in the middle and the older children sleep on the sides. A man entered our tent from the side of the tent and picked up my 4-year-old.

“Luckily her elder daughter, seeing a silhouette of…

How Your Church Should Prepare for an Active Shooter

I hate the title of this article.

I hate that I even feel compelled to write about the topic. But many of you contacted me after the tragic murders at First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs, Texas. Here are some basic issues:

    1. Don’t be in denial. Church shootings are increasing every year in America. And while the percentage of churches with shootings is relatively small, this issue is one where we must be prepared. The downside is just too great.
    2. Have a church security plan. This plan should include all issues of security, from active shooters to child abuse. Local law enforcement is almost always very willing to work with churches and make recommendations.
    3. Remember that church security is a ministry more than an expense. I have little patience with church leaders and members who say they can’t afford church security. The church doors should not be open if it can’t afford to keep members safe and secure. The church or leaders may have to spend money to go to a training seminar, or to retain a local police officer every weekend. Those are investments in security, not expenses.
    4. Keep church security as a matter of prayer in your church. While we should work as hard as possible to make our churches as secure as possible, let’s never forget that we should seek God’s power, strength, and protection.
    5. Organize a church security ministry team. You need leaders who are passionate about this issue. And it is especially helpful if those leaders have a background or experience in security,…

Call for prayer for those involved in Westminster harassment scandal

Rt Rev Rachel Treweek said it’s important as Christians not to judge the several Conservative and Labour MPs being investigated over claims of sexual misconduct.

She told Premier how we could pray for those with question marks over them.

She said: “We need to be praying for individuals and we need to be praying for the culture within Westminster – about how we cannot use any abuse of power.

“My starting point in my prayers is that we are all broken people. It’s important to remember that as Christians, we are following Christ who died for us out of our brokenness and from there a place of resurrection and hope came.

“Those who feel they are powerful and important need to recognise… that they are no more important than anyone else who works here from someone who cleans the building through to people who work in offices – we are all equal made in the image of God and we need to live those relationships well and that is my prayer.”

Theresa May has promised to “create a new culture of respect” in public life following the allegations of sexual abuse in Westminster.

The Prime Minister’s told top business leaders she wants a climate in which victims know their complaints will be properly investigated.

She’s meeting with other party leaders on Monday afternoon about how to tackle the issue.

Rt Rev Treweek said that it is however important that those guilty of harassment acknowledge their wrongdoing.

    She said: “So for…

    Bishop ‘publicly repents’ over porn

Rt Rev Stephen Cottrell admitted to looking at the images during his mid-teenage years, adding it was not something he was “particularly proud” of.

Addressing other peers in the House of Lords, the senior Anglican said on Tuesday: “When I was about 15, I had a Saturday job in a wood yard.

“The men who worked there often left their sleazy and – by today’s standards, I suppose – fairly mild magazines lying around.

“When I was alone in the canteen and if I thought nobody could see me, I looked at those magazines.”

Bishop Stephen also said the availability afforded to youngsters of extreme images through technology poses a “huge moral concern”.

He warned “extremely warped and degrading attitudes” can result from the “persistent and pervasive” exposure to pornography.

Bishop Stephen spoke during a debate on a report by the House of Lord’s communication select committee which called for further action on keeping children safe online.

While admitting the digital age does have benefits, he argued a change in the law is required “to lift it from the mire and misery” it was also creating.

Addressing the chamber, he said: “Although we are indeed growing up in the digital age, we lack maturity in the way we are governing and regulating and responding to this development.

“The digital age can be an age of cultural and intellectual and even moral prosperity but enlightened legislation based on sound and child-centred…

Porous Core on Saturn’s Moon Enceladus Might Have Heated Underground Ocean

A new study suggests that the secret behind the geysers on Enceladus that were identified by NASA’s Cassini spacecraft in 2005 lies in the moon’s core.

NASA/JPL-Caltech/Space Science Institute/Handout via REUTERSSaturn’s ocean-bearing moon Enceladus taken in visible light with the Cassini spacecraft narrow-angle camera on Nov. 27, 2016.

Contrary to previous theories about the geysers, which scientists believed were due to tidal forces on the small moon, researchers now suspect that this activity comes from beneath the thin icy shell of one of Saturn’s natural satellites.

While tidal forces on Earth are affected by the moon and sun’s gravitational pull, on Enceladus, it is mostly caused by Saturn. If the ocean was indeed kept warm by Saturn’s tidal effects on the thin sheet of ice on this moon, the heat produced would not have been warm enough. Without other sources of heat, the ocean would have frozen over within 30 million years. Given that the solar system is 4.6 billion years old, it could not have been the cause.

Researchers believe that it is heat emitted within the fragmented core of Enceladus that is keeping its underground ocean warm. The ocean located just beneath the natural satellite’s icy shell 20 to 25 kilometers thick on average should be kept warm by such heat for billions of years.

According to the researchers, “an abnormally high heat power (more than 20 billion watts) is required, as well as a mechanism to focus endogenic [below-surface] activity at the south pole.”

They suspect that tidal friction within the core could be producing additional heat. The core, which is…
