We Sense God Moving in Germany on 500th Anniversary of Reformation

WITTENBERG — Missionaries marking the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation sense a spiritual breakthrough for Europe and the entire world.

As tens of thousands descended upon the city where the Protestant Reformation began, The Christian Post encountered young people from Youth With A Mission singing songs and worshiping God with guitars on the main street in downtown Wittenberg, the town made famous by Martin Luther.

“We really sense there is some move of God,” said Susanne Schmell, a German native who leads the YWAM base in Bad Blankenburg, which is about 130 miles south and west of Wittenberg.

The group brought a few hundred Bibles to distribute, thinking people would be closed but locals and other Germans were practically “ripping them out of their hands” with eagerness, she said, saying they did indeed want a Bible. The young people hailed from Ukraine, New Zealand, and the United States. One young man from Afghanistan loved passing out Bibles.

Call for President Trump to tackle religious freedom in China

US and Chinese companies have signed business deals valued at nine billion US dollars (£6.84 billion) during a visit by President Donald Trump in a traditional move aimed at blunting criticism of Beijing’s trade practices.

However, religious freedom campaigners hope he will put pressure on President Xi Jinping to ease restrictions on churches.

Spokesman for Release International, Andrew Boyd told Premier’s News Hour he hopes Mr Trump won’t stay silent during a time where cases of things like officials removing crosses from churches are rising.

He said: “He’s the kind of character who might just speak out, given that he has a lot of advisers behind him who will be lobbying for Christianity and lobbying for human rights and we’re really hoping he makes the best of the opportunity.”

China’s biggest online retailer said it pledged to buy American beef and pork worth $1.2 billion (£912 million), but no other details were released of the 19 agreements signed at a ceremony attended by US commerce secretary Wilbur Ross.

Such contract signings are a fixture of visits by foreign leaders to China and often involve agreements negotiated weeks or even months in advance which Beijing have saved to showcase its importance as a market.

Mr Trump has made narrowing the multibillion-dollar US trade deficit with China a priority for his administration.

He is due to hold talks with Chinese president Xi Jinping.

They claim cases…

Russell Moore on Church Shooting: Southern Baptists Feel the Horror ‘More Viscerally’

Russell Moore on Church Shooting: Southern Baptists Feel the Horror ‘More Viscerally’

The mass shooting at First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, hit close to home for Russell Moore, head of the public policy arm of the Southern Baptist Convention.

First Baptist is part of the SBC.

After the gunman Sunday (Nov. 5) took the lives of 26 churchgoers between the ages of 18 months and 77 years old, Moore was called upon to react as the president of the convention’s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission. But he also felt the horror of it as a fellow Baptist.

“There’s a kind of personalization of this shooting in an extraordinary way with people who are Baptist churchgoers because we can imagine being in the very same situation as those who were so wickedly killed,” he said.

“I think there’s a great familiarity with the rhythm of a worship service which makes, for churchgoers, the horror of this even more viscerally felt.”

Moore talked to RNS about Southern Baptists’ responses to the killings, believers’ varying opinions about gun control and how churches remain resilient in the face of such tragedy. This interview has been edited for length and clarity.

How are you seeing Southern Baptists respond to this tragedy? There are two SBC groups in Texas — are they coming together to rally around…

Asthma attack may have killed British kidnapped missionary in Nigeria

Ian Squire, 57, from Shepperton and three British colleagues were kidnapped last month in Delta State.

On Monday, the Foreign Office confirmed that Alanna Carson, David Donovan and Shirley Donovan had returned home safely to the UK but that Mr Squire had died while still a hostage.

While the Foreign Office did not disclose how Mr Squire died, they released a statement confirming he had been “killed”.

A Foreign Office spokesperson told Premier in a statement: “We are supporting the families of four British people who were abducted on 13 October in Nigeria, one of whom was tragically killed.

“This has clearly been a traumatic time for all concerned, and our staff will continue to do all we can to support the families.

“We are grateful to the Nigerian authorities, and are unable to comment given the ongoing nature of their investigations.”

However security sources told Punch, which is a Nigerian newspaper that Mr Squire died of an asthma attack and was not killed by his abductors.

The sources added that he died even before his colleagues were freed.

One of the sources, which wished to remain anonymous, told the paper: “Unfortunately, one of the male victims who is asthmatic and diabetic at the same time, died while in captivity as a result of complications from his ailments.

“Squire was not killed by the militants. He died while in captivity around a bush within Bayelsa and Delta states. It’s an unfortunate situation. We’re not aware if any ransom was paid.”

Ghana’s AIDS Commission Meets with Traditional Healers Claiming to Have a Cure for the Disease

REUTERS/Athit PerawongmethaA nurse tests a blood sample during a free HIV test at a blood tests party, part of a campaign to prevent HIV infection among male same-sex couples, in Bangkok September 20, 2014.

Ghana’s  AIDS Commission has met with the country’s traditional healers in order to shed light on the claims that some of them have a cure for HIV/AIDS.

According to reports, the meeting was meant to clarify the claims of some traditional healers that they can cure HIV/AIDS as some of HIV patients have been abandoning their antiretroviral drugs in favor of traditional medications.

“We are going to monitor the situation because we realized that we have lost to follow-ups in our clinics. We will see how it is going and we may have to meet them again and do further dialoguing so that we all come to a conclusion on this matter,” Olivia Graham Acheampong, Technical Coordinator for the Commission, said.

Stephen Osei Agyepong Nyedua, Ashanti Regional Director for Traditional Medicine Practice at the Health Ministry, said that he wants the authorities to support the traditional healers as they claim that some of the herbs can manage HIV/AIDS. According to Nyedua, there is no mutual trust between traditional healers and the orthodox medicine practitioners as the latter think that the former has nothing to offer due to their lack of knowledge.

“We want proper collaboration between the two, to ensure that what our people are saying, they will take into consideration. They should invite them and if it even requires support to research further into the claims and ensure that those drugs go through…

Virginia Gov. Candidate Ed Gillespie Gives Gracious Concession Speech, Cites Scripture

Virginia Gov. Candidate Ed Gillespie Gives Gracious Concession Speech, Cites Scripture

Republican candidate for governor of Virginia Ed Gillespie was defeated last night by Democratic candidate Ralph Northam. Despite his election loss, Gillespie delivered a gracious concession speech, even quoting Scripture.

In what many political analysts were calling a race that would be a test run for Democrats in the 2018 midterms, Republicans were widely defeated. Gillespie received 45 percent of the vote, according to the Virginia Department of Elections, while Northam received 53.9 percent.

Republican candidate for Lieutenant Governor Jill Vogel, as well as Republican candidate for Attorney General John Adams also were defeated in Tuesday’s election.

In his concession speech, however, Gillespie chose to remain optimistic and grateful to those who supported him, including his family, those who volunteered, and those who gave him their vote.

Gillespie also wished Northam the best success as he takes on the leadership of the Commonwealth from current Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe.

“As I said throughout the course of this campaign, Gov.-elect Northam is a good man and I appreciate his service to our country and our Commonwealth, and I wish him nothing but the best success as our 73rd governor,” said Gillespie.

At the end of his speech, Gillespie said a special thanks to his wife and expressed his belief in what he called his favorite…
