Wycliffe Bible Translators Turns 75

Wycliffe Bible Translators Turns 75

Wycliffe Bible Translators USA is celebrating 75 years of Bible translation. Before Wycliffe came onto the scene, translating the Bible into every language seemed impossible to many, but now, that goal is closer than ever.

Mission Network News reports on the momentous occasion for Bible translation. “This is our 75th  anniversary. It’s pretty exciting to think about what God has done for the last 75 years through this work. There are just so many great stories,” said Kristie Frieze of Wycliffe USA.

To commemorate this milestone, Wycliffe has released a book titled Till All Have Heard, which tells the history of the organization and the work God has helped them accomplish.

Wycliffe was founded by William Cameron Townsend, whom Frieze endearingly refers to as “Uncle Cam.”

“Uncle Cam went out into Mexico and Guatemala and he was selling Spanish Bibles and he realized that they didn’t speak Spanish and he wanted for them to have the Bible in their heart language. And L.L. Legters was the one who said to him ‘we need to think about this for the whole world’ and he really enlarged that vision,” Frieze shares about the organization’s beginnings.

Wycliffe has been instrumental in translating the complete Bible into over 600 languages around the world.

Churches Look to Tighten Security, Even Arm Congregants, after Texas Shooting

Churches Look to Tighten Security, Even Arm Congregants, after Texas Shooting

In 2007, the unthinkable happened at New Life Church in Colorado Springs.

A gunman opened fire outside the church, just as its midday service had dismissed. His bullets hit several members of the same family as they left, wounding David Works and killing his two teenage daughters, Rachel and Stephanie.

More than 600 people were on the church campus when Matthew Murray — a 24-year-old man armed with an assault rifle, two pistols and enough ammunition to kill 100 people — made his way inside the building, church pastor Brady Boyd remembered.

“I know there’s a great theological debate about what Jesus would do,” he told RNS. “I just know firsthand for me, on the day the shooting happened on our campus, we lost two very good, sweet, young teenage girls, and that was awful and horrific, but we could have very well lost 100 people that day.”

Boyd believes that didn’t happen because Murray ran into Jeanne Assam, a former police officer and member of the church security team who was legally carrying a pistol. Assam returned fire, ending the attack that had started 12 hours earlier, when the gunman had shot and killed several others at a nearby mission center.

The memories of that day came flooding back for Boyd when he learned of the mass shooting Sunday (Nov. 5) that left 26 people dead and tens more wounded at First Baptist Church in Sutherland…

A supermajority of Americans who identify as “spiritual but not religious” belong to a specific religious affiliation, according to a recent survey by the Public Religion Research Institute.

In findings released on Monday, the PRRI found that among self-identified “spiritual but not religious” people, only 30 percent were religiously unaffiliated.

“Roughly one in five (18 percent) identify as white mainline Protestant, and an equal number (18 percent) identify as Catholic,” noted PRRI.

“Thirteen percent belong to a non-Christian religious tradition, such as Buddhism, Hinduism, or Judaism. Only 10 percent are non-white Protestant, and 5 percent are white evangelical Protestant.”

PRRI also found that those who labeled themselves “spiritual but not religious” also tend to be “significantly more liberal than other Americans.”

“Four in 10 (40 percent) Americans who are spiritual but not religious are liberal, compared to 24 percent of the general population,” continued PRRI.

“Among the other groups, 27 percent of neither spiritual nor religious Americans, 18 percent of spiritual and religious Americans, and 14 percent of not spiritual but religious Americans identify as liberal.”

For their research, PRRI asked a nationally representative sample of Americans questions on eight statements regarding spirituality, putting respondents into the four categories of “spiritual but not religious,” “spiritual and religious,” “not spiritual but religious,” and “neither spiritual nor religious.”

In recent years, the term…

China Deports Hundreds of South Korean Christians for Helping Persecuted North Koreans

China Deports Hundreds of South Korean Christians for Helping Persecuted North Koreans

China’s government is not only cracking down on its own Christian citizens, it is also targeting South Koreans who are in the country and allegedly helped persecuted North Koreans who escaped Kim Jong-un’s oppressive regime.

According to The Christian Post, the Chinese provinces of Liaoning, Jilin, and Heilongjiang have together deported hundreds of South Korean Christians who are evangelizing and engaging in missionary work.

In the province of Jilin, all South Korean churches have reportedly been closed due to China’s campaign to “eradicate extremism.”

Christians who continue to participate in unauthorized religious activities can face up to $45,200 in fines and possible arrest and imprisonment.

According to Bob Fu, the founder and president of China Aid, a ministry which seeks to help persecuted Chinese Christians, “the top leadership is increasingly worried about the rapid growth of Christian faith and their public presence, and their social influence. It is a political fear for the Communist Party, as the number of Christians in the country far outnumber the members of the Party.”

China’s president Xi Jinping, who is commissioning the crackdown on Christians, is becoming more and more powerful. Last month, the Communist Party in China voted to enshrine Xi’s name in its constitution in order to ensure his legacy.

Max Lucado Says Christians Must Urgently Pray for Return of Jesus Christ in Wake of Church Shooting

(Screengrab: Gateway Church)Bestselling author and pastor Max Lucado preaches at Gateway Church in Southlake, Texas.

Christian pastor and best-selling author Max Lucado has urged Christians to pray for the return of Jesus Christ, and for the demise of the devil, in the wake of the church shooting at First Baptist Church of Sutherland Springs, Texas, that left 26 people dead.

“We pray for their recovery and for peace. And we are reminded that our battle is not against flesh and blood but against the principalities and powers of this present darkness,” Lucado, senior pastor of Oak Hills Church in San Antonio, said on his website Tuesday.

“We are praying for the quick and speedy demise of the devil. And we are urgent in our prayers for the return of Christ in which He will establish a kingdom of peace, once and for all, with the banishment of evil, and filled with the goodness of God.”

Gunman Devin Patrick Kelley was identified as the suspect in the deadliest mass shooting at a church in United States history, with officials stating that the attack does not appear to be racially or religiously motivated.

Lucado wrote in an op-ed for Fox News Monday that Jesus warned his followers to expect extreme hardships. He recalled several instances in the Bible, including one in the…

Open Heavens 8 November 2017: Wednesday daily devotional by Pastor Adeboye – When The Best Comes Last

Open Heavens 8 November 2017: Wednesday daily devotional by Pastor Adeboye – When The Best Comes Last

Topic: When The Best Comes Last — Wednesday 8, November 2017.

Memorise: But many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first. – Matthew 19:30

Read: Genesis 1:26-31 (KJV)

26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.

30 And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.

31 And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

Bible in One Year: Job 9-12, Job 9-12, Joel 2:1-17, Hymn: Sing Hymn 3 – How Great Thou Art

MESSAGE:

A look at the creation story as recorded in Genesis Chapter 1 shows that man, the most important of God’s creation, was created on the sixth day. He was the last of God’s creation, even though he was the most significant. After man was created, God then rested from His work. One vital lesson here is that being first may not always mean being the most important, while being the last may not always mean that you’re the least important. Further reinforcing this truth, Jesus said:

“And, behold, there are last which shall be first, and there are first which shall be last.” – Luke 13:30

Coming up next: Open Heavens 9 November 2017: Thursday daily devotional by Pastor Adeboye – You Will Face Mockers

This is good news to us all. Are you the last child of your family and consequently you’ve believed yourself to be the least? You are simply short-changing yourself! Joseph was the 11th of 12 brothers but he was the one who became a father to them all. Concerning Joseph, it is written:

“And his brethren also went and fell down before his face; and they said, Behold, we be thy servants.” – Genesis 50:18

There are many children who were born last in their families that are presently graced with the gift of becoming the light that every other member of their families looks up to. From today, you will come to the limelight in Jesus’ Name! The Lord will lift you up. However, you need to drop every faulty mindset you have now.

Moreover, another lesson here is that God can reserve the best for the last. When men have exhausted all their efforts and failed, God can show up and intervene in that particular situation. At the marriage feast in Cana of Galilee, Jesus waited for the wine to run out before He supplied a more superior wine (John 2:1-10). Sometimes when God wants to assist us in certain situations, we shove Him aside, telling Him we are mature and can help ourselves. He therefore steps aside and allows us to exhaust our abilities. If you are wise, you will agree with God early enough so that you do not have to waste so much effort in the long run. Yes, you can have the best towards the end! Indeed, do you know that God has reserved the prosperity of some people till they are in their late forties and above? Probably because He wants them to first mature spiritually, mentally and physically, knowing that after maturing, such people will be able to easily cooperate with Him over how He wants the blessing used. Whatever stage your life may be in right now, don’t discount yourself. It’s not over until God says so.

Key Point: Whether you arrive now or later, what is important is that you manifest at your appointed time.

Sing Hymn 3: How Great Thou Art

1. O Lord my God, when I in awesome wonder,
Consider all the worlds Thy hands have made;
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder,
Thy power throughout the universe displayed.

Chorus:
Then sings my soul, my Savior God, to Thee,
How great Thou art! How great Thou art!
Then sings my soul, My Savior God, to Thee,
How great Thou art! How great Thou art!

2. When through the woods, and forest glades I wander,
And hear the birds sing sweetly in the trees.
When I look down, from lofty mountain grandeur
And hear the brook, and feel the gentle breeze.
Chorus

3. And when I think, that God, His Son not sparing;
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in;
That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away my sin.
Chorus

4. When Christ shall come, with shout of acclamation,
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart.
Then shall I bow, in humble adoration,
And then proclaim, “My God, how great Thou art!”
Chorus
