Joel and Victoria Osteen’s daily October 30, 2017 devotional: Raise the Standard

Joel and Victoria Osteen’s daily October 30, 2017 devotional: Raise the Standard

Today’s Scripture: “Remind people to be submissive to [their] magistrates and authorities, to be obedient, to be prepared and willing to do any upright and honorable work.” – (Titus 3:1, AMPC)

Topic: Raise the Standard [Monday October 30, 2017]

What do you do to honor God? A lot of times people think, “Oh, I go to church to honor God. I read my Bible to honor God. I sing and clap in worship to honor God.” And yes, those are ways to honor God, but did you know that you also honor God when you get to work on time? You honor God when you are productive each day and respect the people who are in authority over you. You honor God when you excel in your career.

Actions speak louder than words. When you give your very best in the workplace, your whole life is giving praise to God. Showing up with a good attitude, friendly, organized, being your best—people will notice there’s something different about you. They’ll want what you have.

As believers, we should set the standard in all areas of life. People should see the depth of your character and your spirit of excellence and know that you are a child of the Most High God. Today, make the decision to honor Him in all that you do because you are His representative, His hands and feet in the earth.

A Prayer for Today: “Father in heaven, I choose to honor You in all that I do. I choose to set the standard and do my very best. Thank You for the privilege of being Your representative. Help me to show Your love and excellence in everything I do in Jesus’ name. Amen.”

    From Joel Osteen Ministries.

The most important quality of effective leadership

Adam Bryant has interviewed 525 chief executives for his “Corner Office” column in the New York Times. In his final article, he identifies the most important characteristic of effective leadership: trustworthiness. He quotes a CEO who notes, “If you want to lead others, you’ve got to have their trust, and you can’t have their trust without integrity.”

This observation is on my mind today as I reflect on my weekend spent at The Cove, Billy Graham’s conference and retreat center in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. If you were to cite one characteristic that defines the famed evangelist, I would guess that “integrity” would be at the top. And you’d be right.

What explains his godly character? His amazing global ministry? His enduring legacy?

    Reflecting on a remarkable legacy

The Cove is one of the most beautiful and worshipful places I’ve ever visited. It is just one facet of Dr. Graham’s continuing ministry.

The famed evangelist will turn ninety-nine years old next week; his beloved wife went to her eternal home ten years ago. Their ministry has led more people to Christ than any other in history. God’s work in my soul this past weekend is just one more example of the Lord’s work through their faithfulness.

Billy Graham’s story proves that we can rarely see the end from the beginning. When Dr. Graham preached his first sermon eighty years ago, it went so poorly that a man in the church told him, “Boy, you better go back to school and get a lot more education because you’re not gonna make it.”

But God had a plan for this son of a North Carolina dairy farmer. Neither Billy nor Ruth Graham ever sought worldly wealth or status. Their sole desire was to be faithful to their Kingdom calling. And God has done far more with them than they could have done for him.

Paradoxically, the key to their global acclaim has been their personal humility. The key to their power has been their powerlessness.

    I have observed…

Fifteen Unusual Hospital Visits Experienced by Pastors

Pastors visit church members and others in the hospital. It is what pastors do. And most patients appreciate the ministry and efforts of these pastors.

But that does not mean the pastors’ visits are uneventful. I went to social media to learn about some of the unusual visits pastors experienced. Here are my top fifteen submissions.

    1. Amen and die. One pastor prayed and the church member died when he said, “Amen.” That’s not all. It happened with three different members on three different occasions. Right at “Amen.” I’m glad I got his name on social media. He is not to get near me. Do I hear an “Amen”?
    2. Flying bedpans. There was no further explanation, but it’s worthy of a high ranking.
    3. Nude runner. I got many submissions regarding indecent exposure. My favorite was the elderly woman chasing the pastor down the hallway. The woman was nude. Completely nude.
    4. Quiet conversations. The family was present when the pastor came in the room. They introduced the pastor to the patient. The pastor had a nice conversation with the patient until one of the family members finally told him the patient was deceased.
    5. Jailbreak. The elderly patient asked the pastor to lean over so she could speak to him. He complied. She grabbed his shirt and yelled, “Get me out of here. They are trying to kill me!”
    6. Bad timing. One pastor learned it’s not wise to walk in the patient’s room with the doctor. It really scares the patient.
    7. Bad timing 2. Another pastor learned it’s not wise to walk in the…

Many people have asked, “Where is heaven?” We are not told in the Scripture where heaven is. Some students have tried to take some Scriptures and put them together and say that heaven is in the north. They quote Psalm 48:2, “The joy of the whole earth is ……

Home abortion pills permission from government could be challenged in courts

While pro-choice campaigners welcomed the move, the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children (SPUC) Scotland fiercely opposed the policy change and is reportedly consulting lawyers.

Chief executive John Deighan branded the decision “highly irresponsible” and claimed ministers may have “recklessly exceeded their powers”.

Christian charity CARE also condemned the “significant policy shift” and said it raised huge concerns for women’s safety and mental wellbeing.

Nola Leach, CARE’s Chief Executive said in a statement: “”For the Scottish Government to make a policy change of this magnitude without any parliamentary scrutiny or public consultation is deeply concerning.”

“Encouraging women to have abortions at home is extremely worrying. There will be no health care support on hand should something go wrong.”

“The Scottish Government should do much more to provide real alternatives to abortion for those facing crisis pregnancies. It should properly fund those organisations which are seeking to provide such alternatives for women.”

Scotland’s Chief Medical Officer, Dr Catherine Calderwood, recently confirmed she had written to all health boards north of the border to say that the drug misoprostol could be taken by women outside a clinical setting.

Dr Calderwood said it was ”significant progress” that women in Scotland who are up to nine weeks pregnant could take the second dose of the drug at home if they…
