Pope Francis Condemns World’s Indifference to 4 Nuns Brutally Murdered in Yemen

Christian Post Report – Pope Francis talks aboard the papal plane while en route to Italy September 28, 2015. The pope left the United States on Sunday night, departing from Philadelphia International Airport on an American Airlines flight to Rome.

Pope Francis has condemned the world’s seeming indifference at the violent murder of four nuns, along with 12 other people, at a home for the elderly in Aden, Yemen.

Gunmen reportedly entered the building on Friday, going room-to-room and handcuffing victims before shooting them in the head.

The four nuns killed in the incident had been Missionaries of Charity, prompting Francis to send “the assurance of his prayers for the dead and his spiritual closeness to their families and to all affected from this act of senseless and diabolical violence.”

Reuters reported that no one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack that left 15 people dead in total, though officials say the attackers also kidnapped an Indian priest, identified as Father Tom Uzhunnalil.

Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj confirmed the news on Twitter, sharing that the priest has been “abducted by terrorists in Yemen.”

The Vatican leader has called the four murdered nuns “today’s martyrs,” condemning both the killers, and the global indifference toward the story.

“They do not make the front pages of the newspapers, they do not make the news. They have given their blood for the Church,” Francis told thousands on Sunday at St. Peter’s Square at the Vatican.

“They are victims of the attack by those who killed them but also victims of indifference, of this globalization of indifference. They don’t matter,” he added.

Yemen has been plagued with unrest ever since the Houthi takeover that forced the government out of power in September 2014, leading to the resignation of President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi in January 2015.

Several cities, including Arden, have found themselves in a state of lawlessness, with efforts to restore security achieving little success.

Back in April 2015 the conflict allowed the al-Qaeda terror group to free close to 300 prisoners from Yemen.

Reuters noted that the unrest has forced many aid groups to pull their foreign staff from the country as tensions continue to escalate.

Francis said that prayers are needed to end the violence, calling upon “all parties in the present conflict to renounce violence, and to renew their commitment to the people of Yemen, particularly those most in need, whom the Sisters and their helpers sought to serve.”

The Vatican Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin added that “upon everyone suffering from this violence, the Holy Father invokes God’s blessing, and in a special ways he extends to the Missionaries of Charity his prayerful sympathy and solidarity.”

Christian Missionary Says Biggest Threat to Sharing the Gospel in Africa Is Terrorism

Christian Post Report – Lee Sonius, sub-Saharan Director Africa for Reach Beyond, helps a Kenya town build its first radio station in their district in May 9, 2015. Reach Beyond has planted 5 radio stations in Kenya and 100 stations throughout Africa.

A missionary project leader who works on the front-lines in Africa credits rapid advances in technology and communication for changing the way the Gospel is shared with unreached people, but fears terrorism is becoming a rising obstacle for Christian missions.

“The biggest changes have come in the area of technology and communication. The world has become so much smaller and far more interconnected because of cell phone technology, computers, and social media,” said Lee Sonius, director of sub-Saharan Africa at Reach Beyond, a Colorado Springs-based ministry to the unreached, in an interview with The Christian Post.

“When we first started out as missionaries almost 30 years ago, we were still writing letters back and forth to the U.S. which would have a turn around time of two to three weeks minimum,” Sonius added, noting that phone calls from the U.S. to Africa would cost a minimum of $5 per minute, while now there are a number of ways to speak for free on Skype and plenty of other social media platforms.

“These technological changes have also given us far more ways to proclaim the Gospel. You can now live-stream a ‘radio station’ almost for free and without a license over the Internet. Pod casting is also another way to get short messages across,” he continued.

“Hand held chip recorders and playing devices are also a VERY good way to get the Gospel to people. People in Africa who can’t read and write and come from a oral culture, can also have access to God’s Word as they can listen to the Bible in their own language.”

Sonius has been with Reach Beyond for 18 years, living and serving in Ghana, but has also spent a number of years in the Ivory Coast and a host of other countries in the West African region. He has specialized in planting radio stations, working through global initiatives and global partners in efforts to spread the Gospel, but in the last six years the organization has also branched out into more holistic efforts, including healthcare.

Sonius told CP that part of these efforts include sending medical teams to go into rural villages in West Africa where they carry out healthcare outreach, while on the development side, they build water projects, such as helping put wells in villages where people did not have access to clean water.

“I’m really excited about the water projects we are involved in, because we would put in a well in a village that previously did not have access to clean water, and they were getting water from wherever they could get it, such as rain water or just going through a swamp,” he said.

“When you put a well in, and actually provide clean drinking water, it completely transforms the life of a village. It cuts down sickness, it cuts down things like cholera, and water-born diseases, and also in some villages it has lowered the death rate.”

Sonius also reflected on the 2014 Ebola virus outbreak that spread primarily throughout Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, leading to over 11,000 deaths in total, and affecting many ministries along the way.

The Reach Beyond regional director said that ministry efforts were greatly affected by the outbreak. A medical team was scheduled to go into Sierra Leone in March 2014, the month that the Ebola crisis really began hitting the news, but those plans were forced to change.

He said that after much thinking and praying, they decided to cancel the medical outreach team, but instead got involved in a program called Bucket Brigade.

“We raised money to have a local partner provide buckets to people in neighborhoods that were filled with all kinds of things to help combat Ebola. In the bucket there were things like hand sanitizer, bleach solution, food items, protective gear like gloves, so the bucket was filled with all kinds of small items,” he explained.

Sonius noted that thousands of these buckets were handed out, which he said had a huge impact, especially in Sierra Leone, in helping people battle the deadly virus.

Lee Sonius, sub-Saharan Africa for Reach Beyond, is helping train the future staff of the first radio station planting in this Kenyan district on May 9, 2015. Reach Beyond has planted 5 christian radio stations in Kenya and 100 stations throughout Africa.

As for the biggest challenges in the missionary field over the last few decades, he pointed to civil war, unrest, riots, and political turmoil that have created many difficulties, especially in the country of Liberia.

“Ebola was a big obstacle for almost one full year. Infrastructural problems like lack of electricity and running water even in big cities is also an issue,” he added.

“However, I think recently, just over the last few years, terrorism is becoming a big problem in Africa, with groups like Boko Haram in Nigeria and al Shabab in Kenya. Security issues constantly have to be in the forefront of our thinking and planning.”

Reach Beyond is one of the groups that makes up the “Alliance for the Unreached,” which is calling on churches, radio stations, media and individual believers to make a special effort to reach out to people on May 15, which has been designated as the International Day for the Unreached.

Major evangelical leaders are joining in the project, including Rick Warren of Saddleback Church, with the hope of reaching out to more than 2 billion people around the world who have yet to hear the Gospel, and minister to them on that day.

Sonius pointed out that there are dozens of unreached people groups across Africa, including the Nomadic Tribes in the Sahel Region in West Africa.

“My hope is that the IDU will really raise awareness in the Western Church (Developed World) for the plight of these groups. If the only thing that came out of IDU was a major prayer campaign for the unreached, it would be worth it,” he said.

“I was very happy to be on the task force for IDU, because I live and work on the ‘front-lines’ in Africa and see the need to reach these groups with the Gospel.”

Former New York City Mission Society Property Acquired by World Olivet Assembly

Christian Post Report – World Evangelical Alliance, World Olivet Assembly leaders gather in front of the monument for the former New York City Mission Society.

World Olivet Assembly has acquired a property once owned by the New York City Mission Society, which was used for the past eight years as shooting grounds, with plans to restore the land for Christian mission.

The acquisition of the property, about 70 miles north of New York City, was publicly announced on March 5 after the completion of the closing process.

Over the course of its 200 year history, the Society provided Christian tracts, relief, education and vocational training to New Yorkers. The New York City Mission Society used the property’s campgrounds to offer summer activities for inner-city teens and adults until it was sold in 2005 to a former IBM executive who used the property as shooting grounds.

“WOA rejoices that this longstanding historic site can be used to continue its Christian heritage, now as a global mission headquarters and leadership institute for Christian organizations,” said WOA General Secretary, the Rev. Anthony Chiu. “We give thanks to the Lord for His Grace for these assets which were built upon the prayers and contributions of numerous donors.”

The picturesque land includes amenities such as a conference center, chapel, dormitories, cafeteria, office space, a hotel, and dozens of houses. It is nestled in a valley full of natural beauty and wildlife and connects to another property, acquired simultaneously by World Olivet Assembly, with additional offices, a larger 77-acre lake, several other lakes and open land. In total the combined property consists of around 1,800 acres of land.

The Assembly, which is a global gathering of evangelical churches and para-church organizations, began in 2000 and exists to advance world mission through its regional and 100 national chapters, global partners and seminary.

WOA officials say the organization will use the site to work with its global network to bolster its outreach and evangelism efforts and said its close proximity to New York City also allows it to maximize the efficiency of its mission operations.

The property acquisition moves WOA’s headquarters closer to partner organizations World Evangelical Alliance and Olivet University. Leaders from all organizations expressed that the WOA nearby land acquisition presented numerous opportunities for collaboration.

“By bringing these organizations closer together, WOA wishes for the establishment of this new Evangelical hub to have a great role as a catalyst for global mission,” Chiu said.

Harvest America 2016 Will Tonight Take Place in 100,000 Capacity Dallas Cowboys Stadium, Livestreamed to 6000 Locations

harvest america 2016 (Courtesy of Harvest America)

Christian Post Report – Greg Laurie and grandchildren at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, on the eve of Harvest America 2016 on Saturday, March 5, 2016.

Evangelist Greg Laurie and an army of volunteers are hoping that Harvest America at the 100,000 max-capacity AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, streamed live to more than 6,000 host locations in the U.S. and worldwide, and broadcast live on cable TV on Sunday will usher thousands into a relationship with Jesus and become perhaps the largest Christian outreach in history.

This will be the fourth time in Harvest Ministries’ 26-year history that it has hosted this national outreach, “providing the opportunity for churches throughout the country to unite on one day as one church for one message – the Gospel message of God’s love and salvation, as presented by Laurie,” organizers said.

Laurie is no stranger to large stadium events, but he expressed awe at the size of the venue that hosts the Dallas Cowboys during the NFL season.

On Saturday, Laurie posted on social media a photo of himself and his four grandchildren “surveying the sheer largeness of AT&T stadium.”

Laurie, who is also the pastor of Harvest Christian Fellowship Church in Riverside and Harvest Orange County in Irvine, has led 100 crusades attended by 5 million people with webcasts reaching 1.75 million more. The Dallas Morning News reports that AT&T Stadium could be the setting for “the largest one-day gathering of them all.”

“AT&T Stadium is one big place — it’s massive. But inside, it’s surprisingly intimate,” he told the Dallas Morning News. “And when I get into the pulpit and start my sermon, that’s my sweet spot, the place where I feel most comfortable. When I’m up there, I’m having a conversation with an individual. I’m thinking of the person at the top of the stadium about to walk out the door, and I want to talk with that person.

“I want to see people believe in Jesus Christ.”

More than 700 churches from the Dallas-Fort Worth area are participating in Harvest America and for the first time, a choir of “2,400 voices strong” will also participate.

Churches and volunteers hope to make a significant impact in their congregations and communities. “As the nation has faced many fears and struggles, and especially in a divisive election year, local and national organizers are grateful for the opportunity Harvest America provides in bringing millions of individuals together on One Day as One Church with One Message – a consistent theme of Harvest America events.”

When asked by the Star-Telegram whether America has forgotten about God, Laurie answered,

“No question about that. Surprisingly, the No. 1 religious group in America is not Catholics or Protestants. They are a group that’s identified as the ‘Nones.’ It’s people who are into spirituality, which means a little bit of everything, perhaps. I want to speak to people like that. Before I was a Christian, I once was a Nones. I didn’t know what I believed and had no world view to speak of. I was just kind of waiting to be formed. I didn’t know there was an instruction manual, which is the Bible, on God’s love for us on how to live life.”

Music featured at the event will be from Chris Tomlin, Lecrae, Switchfoot, and MercyMe.

Harvest America is scheduled for Sunday at 5:30 pm CT. For complete information, including viewing options, visit online at HarvestAmerica.com.

Louie Giglio at Catalyst West: How I Survived ‘Nervous Breakdown,’ ‘Pit’ of Depression

Christian Post Report – Pastor Louie Giglio kneels in prayer after speaking to audiences at the Catalyst West conference at Mariners Church, Orange County, California, March 4, 2016.

In a moving message shared with audiences Thursday at the Catalyst West conference held at California-based Mariners Church, Passion Movement founder Louie Giglio recounted his traumatic bout of depression and how he recovered by being still and trusting in God.

Giglio, whose annual Passion Conferences has hosted nearly a million university students since 1995, recalled his emergency room visit after he fell ill one night in the fall of 2008. His symptoms were baffling. “I’m 50 years old and I can’t feel my face,” he told an emergency room attendant. “My legs are convulsing, and I can’t breathe!”

It was a dark period in the pastor’s life and his symptoms went on for months. “[For] four months I was in a pit …,” he told attendees of Catalyst West, a next-generation leadership conference. “I had these symptoms unlike I had experienced or ever heard about before.”

For a while neither Giglio nor his doctors knew what was wrong, and he underwent brain scans and heart tests to try to identify his illness. It was finally determined to be depression, which Giglio says can manifest itself ” … in a myriad of different ways.” He believes those unusual symptoms he experienced were the signs of a “nervous breakdown.”

In the throes of his health crisis, Giglio wondered if he would ever be well again. “I wondered if I was ever going to go to work again … I had this huge question mark over my life.” If the Passion City Church pastor had been asked to imagine himself speaking at Catalyst West, he would’ve replied, “It would be easier for me to ride a bike to Mars.”

Giglio said that during his illness he would sing to himself all night. “Be still my soul,” he’d sing. “There is a healer, his love is deeper than the sea … his mercy is unfailing … ”

The pastor’s deliverance did not come right away, but he kept on singing. “In time, that song pierced the darkness … Thank you Jesus for leading me back into the light.”

God helped him to recover.

Giglio stressed to Catalyst West attendees that God is bigger than any problems they may experience, and used the beauty and wonderment of nature to further prove his point.

The pastor shared his experience of the very first time he saw the Northern Lights, an occurrence where electrically charged particles from the Sun enter the Earth’s atmosphere and collide, resulting in colorful rays, curtains and clouds of green, pink, red, yellow, blue or even violet that appear in nighttime skies.

Giglio and a group of friends he had recently met had been dining at a restaurant one night when they dropped everything, jumped into their cars and raced to an ideal location to view the open sky. At the time, Giglio had no idea of what they were doing, but it turned out to be a night he would always remember.

“I will never forget it to this moment … the whole sky just lit up neon green!” Giglio was in utter awe, and he reminded the Catalyst West audience of how wonderful and powerful God is. “There has to be a moment when we are awakened to wonder.”

He reiterated that God says, ” … ‘Be still, and know [that I am God]… ‘ I can turn the sky into a light show … ” Christians must believe God for all things. “There has to be a moment when we take God at His word.”

Archaeology Discovery: Ancient Figure of Nude Woman Dating Back 3,400 Years

A worker for the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) stands on the mosaic floor of a monastery unearthed (Photo: Reuters/Amir Cohen)

Christian Post Report – A worker for the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) stands on the mosaic floor of a monastery unearthed during excavations in Hura, east of Beersheba April 1, 2014.

A 7-year-old Israeli boy discovered a rare Canaanite figurine dating back 3,400 years, archaeologists have confirmed.

The clay figurine, resembling a naked woman in standing position, was discovered by the young boy as he hiked in Tel Rehov in northeastern Israel last week. The artifact was fashioned out of wet clay using a mold, archaeologists said.

After discovering the artifact, the boy returned home and showed it to his mother, who turned it over to the Israel Antiquities Authority.

“Ori returned home with the impressive figurine and the excitement was great. We explained to him this is an ancient artifact and that archaeological finds belong to the state,” his mother said in a statement from the Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The boy was later rewarded with a certificate of good citizenship from the government.

Yardenna Alexandre of the Israel Antiquities Authority told Haaretz that archaeologists are debating whether the recent find is a fertility goddess or an idol.

“It could be either one,” Alexandre said, adding that excavators “are not worried that it’s a fake” even though the figurine was discovered sitting in plain site, rather than buried beneath layers of soil.

Alexandre added that the svelte nature of the figurine leads researchers to believe it dates back to the 13 or 15 centuries BCE, as women depicted before that time were usually heavier.

Amihai Mazar, who oversees excavations at Tel Rehov, noted in the government’s announcement that the figurine “is typical of the Canaanite culture of the 15th–13th centuries BCE. Some researchers think the figure depicted here is that of a real flesh and blood woman, and others view her as the fertility goddess Astarte, known from Canaanite sources and from the Bible.”

“It is highly likely that the term trafim mentioned in the Bible indeed refers to figurines of this kind,” Mazar said, adding that “Evidently the figurine belonged to one of the residents of the city of Rehov, which was then ruled by the central government of the Egyptian pharaohs.”

Several artifacts dating back to the Canaanites have been discovered in Israel. In April 2015, archaeologists discovered pottery, jewelry, and cosmetics dating back 3,000 years in a cave in the Tel Halif area in the southern part of the country.

Amir Ganor, the director of the Prevention of Antiquities Robbery unit, told YNet News that some of the artifacts discovered in the cave, including seals, show evidence of Egyptian influence in the region.

“Among the many artifacts that were discovered, most of which are characteristic of the Judahite culture (the tribe of Judah, which wasn’t exiled to Babylon) in the south of the country, we found dozens of stone seals, some of which are shaped in the form of a winged beetle (scarabs) and bear carved symbols and images typical of the Egyptian culture which prevailed in the country in the Late Bronze Age,” Ganor said, adding that “some of the seals were fashioned on semi-precious stones that come from Egypt and the Sinai Peninsula.”

Billy Graham Tells Believers: Whatever You Fear, Turn It Over to God

Christian Post Report – Evangelist Billy Graham said Christians must ask God for help in confronting their fears, the Rev. Billy Graham advises, suggesting that Christians stop wallowing in their fears and turn them over to God.

On the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association’s website, the religious leader was asked: “I have a friend who worries all the time about her health. If even the smallest thing goes wrong, she’s convinced it must be something serious and she runs to her doctor. I’ve urged her not to worry so much, but it doesn’t do any good. How can I help her?”

Graham responded that while it’s important to take care of your physical well-being, it’s also important not to let health issues control your life.

“We also shouldn’t be overly absorbed with our bodies, or let them control us (instead of us controlling them),” Graham said, adding that often times, health concerns have a “deeper, spiritual dimension” to them.

“Let me put it this way: What is it she really fears? Is it disability? Is it pain and suffering? Is it a fear of losing control and having to depend on others to help her? Or is it even a fear of death?” the preacher questioned.

“Whatever her fears, encourage her to face them — and then turn them over to God. God loves her, and when we know Christ and have put our faith and trust in Him, we know He’ll never abandon us. If she has never done so, urge her to commit her life to Christ today. Remember: Fear flees in the light of God’s love,” Graham added.

Graham has spoken on the topic of fear and anxiety before. When asked how to deal with crippling feelings of fear in a 2004 post on the BGEA website, the minister said God’s wish is to see all of his children set free from their emotional and mental burdens.

“The very reason Jesus Christ came to Earth was to offer Himself in sacrifice for our sin so that we might be reconciled to God and experience His kindness and mercy as His dearly loved children. It is His desire that you be completely set free from fears, torment, and oppression so that you might experience His abundant life, (John 10:10),” the evangelical leader wrote.

Graham added in a 2014 post that “God doesn’t want us to be prisoners of our fears.”

While some fears are certainly legitimate, including anxieties over poisonous snakes, drunk drivers, and “sins that have a grip on our lives, because we know they’ll destroy us,” others are unfounded.

“But some fears aren’t legitimate — that is, they have no basis in fact,” the religious leader said.

“The key is to learn to trust God, no matter what our fears are. And we can trust Him, because He loves us, and He is greater than anything we’ll ever face. Furthermore, when we know Christ, we know He is with us every moment of the day, and that should give us comfort,” Graham concluded.

Pope Writes Letter to 18-Y-O Gang Member in LA Prison, Tells Him to Embrace God’s Mercy

Christian Post Report – Pope Francis waves to the crowd while arriving to celebrate Mass in San Cristobal de las Casas, February 15, 2016.

Pope Francis has written a letter to a juvenile gang member jailed in Los Angeles, California, asking that the young man pray for him.

The pope responded to a letter written by Carlos Adrian Vazquez Jr., who, at age 16, received a prison sentence of 11 years for involuntary manslaughter due to his involvement in a Los Angeles gang.

Vazquez told CNN in an interview this week that his crime and subsequent prison sentence caused him to contemplate suicide, and he reached out to the pope to ask for forgiveness.

The teen, who is now 18, added that he was surprised to receive a response from Francis. In the letter, the pontiff asked Vazquez to embrace God’s mercy, as well as offer his prayers for the religious leader.

“I pray that as you and your fellow residents celebrate the opening of the holy door, you may receive these gifts and be filled with peace and hope,” the pope wrote, referencing the Catholic Church’s Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy year and its symbolic “opening of the holy door” that invites all Christians to receive God’s forgiveness and mercy.

“Know that the holy father is thinking of you and praying for you. And please remember to pray for me, because I greatly need your prayers,” the pope added.

Vazquez told CNN that he was shocked to receive a response from the religous leader.

“I couldn’t believe it. I didn’t think the pope would write to someone who’s behind bars,” the 18-year-old said.

In honor of the Church’s jubilee year, Francis has reached out to society’s marginalized groups, including the poor, the sick, and those who have committed crimes.

While speaking with prisoners at the Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility in Philadelphia last September, Francis, according to Time magazine, the inmates that he understands “it is a painful time not only for you, but also for your families and for all of society.”

“Any society, any family, which cannot share or take seriously the pain of its children, and views that pain as something normal or to be expected, is a society ‘condemned’ to remain a hostage to itself, prey to the very things which cause that pain,” Francis added.

The pope also visited a prison during his trip to Mexico in February, giving inmates at State Cereso Prison No. 3 in Juarez a crystal crucifix to serve as an example of both strength and fragility.

“The crystal is the most fragile, it breaks easily,” the pope told the inmates, adding that the cross “helps us, it opens the door to salvation.” the El Paso Times reported last month.

“Divine mercy reminds us that prisons are an indication of the kind of society we are,” the pontiff continued. “In many cases, they are a sign of silence and omissions, which have led to a throwaway culture, a symptom of a culture that has stopped supporting life, of a society that has abandoned its children.”
