‘Hijarbie’ Not Symbol of Oppression, Says Creator of Hijab-Wearing Barbie

Christian Post Report – Hijarbie.

After the toy company Mattel gave the classic doll Barbie a dramatic makeover with a variety of skintones and body types last month, a woman in Nigeria has taken to Instagram in recent weeks to show Muslim girls how they can transform Barbie into a hijab-wearing icon they can identify with.

While most young girls around the world are accustomed to playing with Barbie dolls that are dressed in fashionable and sometimes sexy dresses, pants and tops, Haneefa Adam, a medical scientist in Nigeria, has created an Instagram account called “Hijarbie” to show Muslim girls that there are alternative wardrobe options for their Barbie dolls.

The Hijarbie Instagram account features pictures of Barbie dolls wearing various forms of modest clothing along with different styles and colors of hijabs (head scarves worn by Muslim women), all of which Adam has crafted herself.

As it is taboo in some Muslim cultures for women to show off too much of their skin and body, all the clothing options featured on the Hijarbie account cover up Barbie’s legendary blonde hair, her arms and legs.

The installation “Sheltered position” of German artist Sabine Reyer shows one hundred Barbie dolls dressed with burkas at the Ruhr-Biennale in Dortmund, Germany, October 7, 2012.

In an interview with CNN published earlier this week, the 24-year-old Adam said she was inspired to create the Instagram account after coming across the “Barbie Style” Instagram account that features Barbie wearing various outfits. The Barbie Style account is labeled as “Barbie’s official style feed.”

“I thought I had not seen Barbie dressed in a hijab before so I decided to open an Instagram account and dressed Barbie up in the clothes that I made,” Adam explained. “I thought it was really important for a doll to be dressed like how I would be.”

Adam said she is hopeful the Hijarbie page will give Muslim girls a “modest doll” that they find can be a relatable role model.

“I want to use the Instagram page to create an identity for her similar to Barbie,” Adam said. “It has roots in my religion and cultural identity. The way Barbie dresses is very skimpy and different and there’s nothing wrong with it. I just wanted to give another option for Muslim girls like me.”

As all of the pictures on Adam’s Hijarbie account feature the standard Caucasian Barbie doll, she plans on expanding the social media account to include Barbie dolls of color. She explained that she would have used a black Barbie doll sooner but was unable to acquire one in Nigeria.

“I couldn’t find the different types in Nigeria (no Amazon or eBay or anything),” Adam continued. “I’d have loved to dress up a black doll myself too. I’ve ordered for some internationally and they’ll soon be here.”

Adam admits that some critics of her account have left negative comments saying that Muslim women who are forced to cover up their bodies with modest clothing are “oppressed” by their society. She asserts, however, that such claims are largely due to people’s misconceptions.

“People think that when Muslim women cover up they are forced to. (The) majority of us are not,” Adam explained. “We want to cover up and express our religion. But a lot of Muslims don’t cover their hair and it doesn’t make them any less of a Muslim.”

“I think this is a great platform to try and get the Muslim identity to the world and correct some misconceptions.”

Although Adam believes that hijabs are not a sign of cultural oppression of women, other Muslim women disagree.

Two Muslim women who grew up in Muslim families in Egypt and India wrote a joint op-ed in The Washington Post in December rejecting the notion that the hijab is “merely a symbol of modesty and dignity.”

“We don’t buy it,” the women argued. “This ideology promotes a social attitude that absolves men of sexually harassing women and puts the onus on the victim to protect herself by covering up.”

Tina Campbell Praises God for Birthing ‘It’s Personal’ Album to Win NAACP Image Award

Christian Post Report – Mary Mary’s Tina Campbell, Gospel singer Tina Campbell says she’s grateful to God for bringing her out of public marital struggles with her husband, Teddy, to create a body of work that led her to win an NAACP Image Award as a solo artist.

“I never knew that when my life was falling apart a couple of years ago on my reality show that God would use those challenges to birth a body of work that you all would be recognizing today,” Campbell said during her acceptance speech at the 47th annual NAACP Image Awards. “So thank you. I can’t believe y’all got me up here crying.”

After close to two decades in the music industry where she has received numerous accolades with her sister and co-star of the WEtv reality show “Mary Mary,” Campbell said the award is just as affirming as the first one she ever received.

“Felt like the first time. I got my own #NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Gospel Album for my album #ItsPersonal,” she wrote on social media. “IM SO GRATEFUL!!!”

The NAACP Image Awards aired last Friday and celebrated multicultural achievements and performances in television, recording, literature, motion picture, writing and directing, along with people promoting social justice in creative ways. This year, Campbell’s first solo album, It’s Personal, was recognized as Outstanding Gospel Album following her hiatus from gospel music duo Mary Mary.

Last year, Erica was nominated for the honor but publicly celebrated her sister’s nomination as well.

“Super proud of my sister! @teddyandtina #itsPersonal NAACP Image Award Nomination #naacp #imageawards #bestgospelalbum #proud #MaryMary,” Erica wrote on social media last year when it was first announced that her sister would be nominated.

During an interview with The Christian Post about her album, Campbell revealed that God helped her overcome tribulations like her husband’s infidelity and the death of her father by inspiring her with the It’s Personal album.

“God started downloading all of this music into me and I knew that God gave it to me to give it away,” she told CP. “I knew when it came time to give it away, I didn’t want to just do things as usual.”

Lat month, Cambell explained the difficulties in getting people interested in gospel music.

“You have to show what’s good about it, you have to show what’s relevant about it, you have to show how it applies to the everyday person and their everyday life. It’s very important to include those elements of it because some people think it’s just for Sundays,” the 41-year-old told the Atlanta Business Chronicle.

“If people understand that it’s relatable everyday for every situation — it’s what you laugh to, cry to, party to, be encouraged by, it’s your easy listening, it’s your workout music, it’s your motivation before you take that college exam — if you show people how it’s relatable, they are able to understand how amazing this music is.”

Christian Fighters Join Iraqi Forces to Push ISIS Out of Mosul

Christian Post Report – Sons of Liberty International, a group headed by Baltimore-native Matthew VanDyke, a renowned Libyan revolutionary and former prisoner of war, has been operating in northern Iraq since December 2014. The organization is training recruits in the Nineveh Plains Protection Unit, a militia made up of a couple thousand Christians.

Christians in Iraq have recently joined with Kurdish fighters and government forces in an effort to push the Islamic State out of the northern territory, including the city of Mosul.

The Nineveh Plains Protection Unit (NPU), formed two years ago following the rise of the Islamic State’s persecution of Christians in northern Iraq, works together with the Iraqi Kurdistan Regional Government to fight the terrorist group’s militants.

“We are currently 600 trained fighters and more young Christians are ready to join,” Sefa Ilyas Checo, the commander of of the Christian military unit, told Voice of America. “We are ready to fight IS inside Mosul city.”

The media outlet adds that the majority of the NPU hail from Mosul, a northern Iraqi city rich in Christian heritage that was overtaken by the Islamic State in 2014.

The main goal of the Christian militant group, according to VOA, is to drive the Islamic State out of cities like Mosul.

Sons of Liberty International, a U.S.-based group, has been training members of the NPU since December 2014.

Matthew VanDyke, who oversees Sons of Liberty International, told The Christian Post in an interview last year that their objective is to train NPU to defend their land in northern Iraq from the Islamic State.

“The purpose of the NPU is beyond just fighting ISIS,” VanDyke told The Christian Post last April. “It is not just a short-term project. They have their eye on being a security force for their region from now on, and being able to demonstrate to their people that they will be safe and that they can stay in the country and Christianity can survive in Iraq.”

Iraqi forces have attempted to regain multiple regions from Islamic State control, including the central city of Ramadi, which was successfully reclaimed by government troops last year following a seven-month occupation by the terrorist group.

Despite this recent victory, some American military leaders have remained skeptical of Iraq’s ability to take more cities from ISIS control.

Marine Corps Lieutenant General Vincent Stewart has suggested that the retaking of Mosul will prove to be a more “complex operation” compared to the success of Ramadi.

The military leader has maintained that an operation in Mosul will likely take over a year.

“Mosul will be a complex operation. … I’m not as optimistic that we’ll be able to turn that in the near term, in my view, certainly not this year,” Stewart said during a Senate Armed Services Committee meeting in February.

“We may be able to begin the campaign, do some isolation operations around Mosul,” he said. “But securing or taking Mosul is an extensive operation and not something I see in the next year or so.”

Although Stewart provided a pessimistic outlook for Mosul’s future, Iraqi forces have received praise for their continued success at keeping the Islamic State out of Ramadi.

“What you’re ultimately now looking at is Daesh (another name for ISIS) is being hit on many fronts, and is not simply capable of dealing with the level of evolving professionalism and capability that you see in the military forces of the Iraqis,” U.S. Lt. Col. Joe O’Callaghan, who oversees a U.S. task force in northern Iraq, told The Wall Street Journal in January.

Despite success in keeping terrorists out of Ramadi, the United Nations has called on international powers to do more to help Iraq maintain stability and fight back against the Islamic State.

Lise Grande, who serves as Iraq’s U.N. humanitarian coordinator, recently told Reuters that Iraq needs millions of dollars more to maintain a solid infrastructure.

“We know that the government has its back against the wall fiscally. In order to stabilize areas and to help displaced families go back, we’ve got to do more,” Grande said, pointing to the country’s dwindling oil prices and sapped resources.

10 Tips to Reduce Risk of Cancer by Dr. Pete Sulack

Christian Post Report – In honor of National Cancer Prevention Month in February, stress and cancer expert Dr. Pete Sulack released a list of things one can do to reduce the risk of getting cancer.

Sulack, founder of one of the fastest growing chiropractic clinics in the nation, has studied extensively the connection between stress and cancer.

“You can’t possibly avoid every single cancer causing substance, and you can’t avoid stress — it is a fact of life. What you can do, however, is counterbalance stress with daily choices that at least give you a fighting chance,” said Sulack in a statement to The Christian Post. “You can adopt practices that make your body more resilient in the face of cancer. It doesn’t really matter whether you are genetically predisposed to contracting a certain kind of cancer. What matters is the genetic expression that comes from your daily choices, behaviors, and habits. It has been said that genetics loads the gun, but daily choices pull the trigger.”

The author of Unhealthy Anonymous decided to provide a list of practical steps people can begin taking now to avoid abnormal cell growth which causes the deadly disease.

See the doctor’s top ten list of major things to do to reduce your risk of cancer below:

  1. We first need to recognize that stress is the true culprit in cancer and chronic disease.

  2. The next step is to surround yourself with positive people, and people who will hold you accountable for your self-care.

  3. Be careful what you put into your body. Eat well, avoid sugar, caffeine, alcohol and tobacco. Drink water, and replace grains and sugars with healthy fats and vegetables.

  4. Increase your spinal mobility and exercise regularly.

  5. Rest – your body needs sleep to reset brain function, restore strength, boost immune function, and repair cellular damage.

  6. Detox – drink lots of filtered water, eat lots of vegetables and fermented foods. Take baths, fast, and work up a good sweat each day.

  7. Keep your body alkalized – cancer thrives on acidity.

  8. Help others! Those who have sought happiness through helping others have showed lower readings of inflammatory factors in their blood.

  9. Control your thoughts.

  10. Be grateful.

The above mentioned list are things also explored in the book, Unhealthy Anonymous: Exposing the Greatest Threat to Your Health and Happiness. According to the book, stress is the biggest cause of cancer. Sulack outlines in the book simple steps to increase health and practical solutions to reverse the effects of stress.

Although Sulack has a great passion to see people get healthy in body and mind, he also has a heart to see people come to know Jesus Christ as their savior. The successful Bethel University graduate started a ministry called Matthew 10 International Ministries after traveling to the Hindu city of Rajahmundry, India, where he witnessed many people put their faith in Jesus’ message of salvation.

According to the ministry’s website, Matthew 10 has begun housing, feeding and educating hundreds of India’s orphaned children on a 150 acre site. They hope to soon house 1000 children in the near future

Doctors in China Amazed After ‘Miracle Baby’ Survives Night in Morgue

Christian Post Report – Chen Yiming touches the hand of his newborn baby at Ruijin Hospital in Shanghai October 24, 2011. Chen Yiming and his wife Yang Huiqing, both born under the one-child policy, had their first baby as the world population was about to reach the seven billion mark. China, the world’s most populated country with more that 1.34 billion people, introduced a law that limits most urban families to one child. The policy is meant to avoid over-population, but as families shrink and the population structure moves towards an inverted pyramid, many demographers worry that a shrinking pool of young people won’t be able to support and care for their elders. The United Nation projects the world’s population will reach 7 billion on October 31, 2011. Picture taken on October 23, 2011.

Doctors in China are amazed by a recent “miracle baby” that was pronounced dead, only to survive a night in the morgue and show signs of life moments before his cremation.

An An Lu was born two months premature on January 8 in Jinhua, Zhejiang Province, and spent 23 days in an incubator before his parents, surname Lu, were able to take their child home to celebrate the Chinese New Year.

The baby was only able to spend a few days at home with his family when he began showing signs of discoloration. Although his father rushed him back to the hospital, doctors pronounced him dead when his heart stopped beating and he stopped breathing.

While An An’s fate initially looked bleak, doctors at the Pan’an People’s Hospital in Jinhua are now calling him a “miracle” baby after he came “back to life.”

As hospital workers prepared the baby for his cremation, they noticed that the infant was crying out and breathing despite spending the night in the hospital’s mortuary, set at a temperature of 10 degrees Farenheit.

“It’s the first time I’ve seen this. It’s a true miracle,” Dr. Chen Shuanghua, a pediatrician at the Pan’an People’s Hospital, recently told the Epoch Times.

“Having been a pediatrician for over 20 years, I can’t really understand how this miracle happened,” Dr. Chen added.

An An had been frozen for about 12 hours when he was discovered to be alive. He has now been placed in an incubator at the hospital for further evaluation.

Although the baby’s survival is being hailed as a miracle, doctors have remained cautious about his future.

Another “miracle baby” story came out of China in December 2014, when relatives buried a premature child alive on their property, only to discover the infant was still breathing.

The incident took place in Dongdong, Liaoning Province, over one year ago, when parents Lu Xiaoyun and He Yong rushed to the hospital after believing they had suffered a miscarriage and given birth to a stillborn daughter.

While at the hospital, the couple’s mother buried the newborn on the family farm.

When the husband and wife were told by hospital staff that it is possible their infant could have survived the miscarriage, the two rushed home to find that the buried baby was in fact breathing.

And a strange and malicious event occurred in May 2015, when parents in China’s Tian Dong County conspired to bury their newborn child because the infant was born with a cleft lip.

The baby survived eight days underground before he was discovered by a local farm worker, who heard his cries while she picked herbs.

The parents were then arrested for attempting to dispose of the newborn infant due to his physical abnormality.

Wu Weilli, deputy director of pediatrics at Tiandong County People’s Hospital, told local media outlets that he was shocked by the parents’ acts.

“[…] I still can’t believe parents can abandon their own babies. Cleft lip and palate are treatable and many public interest organizations would like to provide funds for those kids,” Weilli had said.

Bishop Michael Curry Says Episcopal Church Won’t Stop Supporting Gay Marriage Despite Anglican Suspension

Christian Post Report – Retired Episcopal Bishop of New Hampshire and the first openly gay priest elected as a bishop in a major Christian organization, Gene Robinson.

Presiding Bishop Michael Curry has admitted that the Episcopal Church’s suspension in January by the Anglican Communion for supporting gay marriage is fair, but said that it will not change their stance on the issue.

“We’re not changing — so there shouldn’t be an expectation that in the next three years the Episcopal Church is going to change,” Curry said at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. earlier this week, according to an article on the Institute on Religion & Democracy blog Juicy Ecumenism.

“This is who we are,” Curry added.

Anglican Communion leaders announced at a major meeting in January that they are suspending the Episcopal Church for three years due to its 2015 vote to authorize same-sex marriage ceremonies in church.

Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby(Photo: Reuters/Toby Melville)The Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby (L) speaks with protestors in the grounds of Canterbury Cathedral in Canterbury, southern Britain January 15, 2016. The Anglican Church has slapped sanctions on its liberal U.S. branch for supporting same-sex marriage, a move that averted a formal schism in the world’s third largest Christian denomination but left deep divisions unresolved. The Anglican communion, which counts some 85 million members in 165 countries, has been in crisis since 2003 because of arguments over sexuality and gender between liberal churches in the West and their conservative counterparts, mostly in Africa.

“The traditional doctrine of the Church in view of the teaching of Scripture, upholds marriage as between a man and a woman in faithful, lifelong union. The majority of those gathered reaffirm this teaching,” the Anglican Primates affirmed.

“Recent developments in The Episcopal Church with respect to a change in their Canon on marriage represent a fundamental departure from the faith and teaching held by the majority of our provinces on the doctrine of marriage. Possible developments in other provinces could further exacerbate this situation,” they added.

Curry reflected that the Anglican decision makes sense because of the doctrinal disagreements, but insisted that the Primates “did not vote us off the island.” He said that Episcopalians are still part of the “Anglican family” despite the developments.

“Because we differ on a core doctrine, it would not be seen as appropriate for us to represent the Anglican Communion in ecumenical, interfaith, ambassadorial relationships. That’s fair,” Curry added.

“Because we disagree on core doctrine they are asking that we not cast our vote on matters of doctrine or polity — not about our life together and a whole bunch of other things that get considered.”

Retired New Hampshire Bishop Gene Robinson, who in 2003 became the first openly gay bishop in a relationship, thanked Curry for the way the Episcopal Church has handled the controversy.

“Thanks for not throwing us under the bus — the LGBT community as well as the Episcopal Church, we’re proud of you,” Robinson said.

Robinson has been an outspoken voice for LGBT rights, and in March 2014 wrote to Pope Francis asking him to change the Roman Catholic Church’s official doctrine that defines homosexuality as a disorder, arguing that such a teaching is “the basis for discrimination, rejection and violence the world over.”

Anglican leader Justin Welby, the archbishop of Canterbury, has continued trying to push for reconciliation between conservative African bishops and their more liberal North American counterparts.

Welby said back in January that the Episcopal Church is facing “consequences” for stepping out of line with the Anglican Communion, but clarified it is important not to refer to the decision against the Episcopalians as “sanctions.”

Ted Baehr, founder and publisher of Movieguide, also released the 2016 Annual Report to the Entertainment Industry at the event that shows that the most family-friendly movies averaged more than $73.01 million per movie in 2014 in the U.S. and Canada, but that “the least family-friendly movies with the most offensive, obscene, or anti-family, immoral content averaged only about $17.59 million.”

The study extensively analyzed the content of the top movies released by the major studios in Hollywood earning $750,000 or more, including the major independent studios.

“Most people want to see good conquer evil, truth triumph over falsehood, Justice prevail over injustice, Liberty conquer tyranny, and beauty overcome ugliness,” said Baehr, as reported by Movieguide. “They also would like to take their whole family, including their grandparents, to the movies more often.”

As a family advocacy group, Movieguide has been analyzing the content of movies and comparing box office numbers since 1991.

“We’ve found similar results in practically all of our previous studies,” Baehr noted. “However, last year was one of the best years for family-friendly entertainment.”

5th Century Underground Church Discovered in Turkey Depicts Jesus Rising Up Into the Sky

Christian Post Report – Priests hold a mass at Surp Asdvadzadzin Patriarchal Church in Istanbul, Turkey, April 24, 2015, as part of events to commemorate the victims of mass killings of Armenians by Ottoman Turks.

Turkish archaeologists excavating the world’s largest known underground city in the Cappadocia region of central Turkey have found a fifth century underground church with scenes of Jesus rising into the sky.

“This place is even bigger than the other historical churches in Cappadocia. It was built underground and has original frescoes that have survived to this day,” the mayor of Nevsehir, Hasan Unver, told Hurriyet Daily News.

“We didn’t even think of finding such a structure when we first started works. But excavations and cleaning work are continuing and we hope to find new data relating to the history of Cappadocia,” the mayor said.

“It is reported that some of the frescoes here are unique,” Unver continued. There are exciting depictions like fish falling from the hand of Jesus Christ, Him rising up into the sky, and the bad souls being killed. When the church is completely revealed, Cappadocia could become an even bigger pilgrimage center of Orthodoxy.”

Unver said the church may have been built in the fifth century AD.

The thin walls of the church collapsed because of snow and rain, but can be restored, according to the archeologists.

“We have stopped work in order to protect the wall paintings and the church. When the weather gets warmer in the spring, we will wait for humidity to evaporate and then we will start removing the earth,” archaeologist Ali Aydin was quoted as saying.

Aydın also said that the side walls of the church were still underground and the frescoes there are likely to be intact. “Only a few of the paintings have been revealed. Others will emerge when the earth is removed. There are important paintings in the front part of the church showing the crucifixion of Jesus and his ascension to Heaven. There are also frescoes showing the Apostles, the saints and other prophets Moses and Elyesa [Elijah].”

In December 2014, the archeologists found the underground city, consisting of about 3.5 miles of tunnels, churches and escape galleries dating back around 5,000 years. The city was found under Nevsehir fortress and the surrounding area during an urban transformation project carried out by Turkey’s Housing Development Administration.

Five other churches have previously been discovered in the same underground city. It is believed that early Christians used the underground city to hide during the widespread persecution of Christians after the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

Christianity’s spread to Turkey started in the early fourth century, and these discoveries could help archaeologists learn more about the practice of early Christianity in the region.

A Case of Church Burnout

Christian Post Report – “I just did not have the energy to keep coming back to church.”

Though my consultation with the church took place many years ago, I remember vividly my interview with a member of the church who had recently dropped out. Her departure stunned the members and leadership. She was the one member you could count on. She was there “every time the doors were open.”

And then she never showed up again.

She simply sent an email of resignation of all ministries and left.

This church member experienced classic church burnout. And, as a consequence, she put herself on the sidelines of local church ministry, unsure if she would ever come back to active

Is That a Bible? Be Careful!

Christian Post Report – It is amazing that people today want to treat anything from the Bible as if it’s asbestos, to borrow a line from Christian attorney Jordan Lorence, if it somehow shows up in a public school. Historically, it was the push to teach the Bible that gave birth to education for the masses in the first place. This was the forerunner to the public school. How ironic.

A seemingly minor conflict in a small Texas public high school is symptomatic of a major conflict in society at large.
