Disney Plans Live Action ‘Mulan’ Film

After the apparent success of Disney’s live action adaptation of the classic fairy tale “Cinderella,” the studio is now working on another live action retelling of one of its recent animated films, “Mulan.”

The Hollywood Reporter first reported Disney’s plans, saying that the studio already acquired a script that has been written by writing team Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek who were both relatively unknown in the industry. The story of course touches on the legend of Hua Mulan, a Chinese woman warrior who pretended to be a man in order to join the imperial army in place of her ailing father.

With a script in hand, Disney is said to be looking for a director who will helm the project. No news as of yet as to who is being eyed. The film however already has its producers. Chris Bender and J.C. Spinks of Benderspink are producing the film together with Jake Weiner.

This is not Disney’s first attempt to bring to life the story of Mulan in the big live action screen. There was an earlier try with actress Zhang Ziyi five years ago but it never materialized. There is also a non-Hollywood feature film that came out in 2009 called “Mulan: Rise of a Warrior” which was starred in by Chinese actress Zhao Wei.

According to another report in Screen Rant, the movie will likely focus on the story and like the live action “Cinderella,” will not be a musical. It all depends on the script and how much of it is reflective of the animated feature or the story in the Chinese history books.

It is no wonder why Disney is pushing projects of retelling or reimagining of any of its creative property. It has proven with “Cinderella,” and even with “Maleficent” and “Alice in Wonderland” that remakes can bring in a lot of revenue. Cinderella already earned $336.2 million in just three weeks, while “Alice in Wonderland” earned over $1 billion in 2010 and “Maleficent” at over $700 million in 2014.

The studio has similar projects in the pipeline such as “Beauty and the Beast,” an “Alice in Wonderland” sequel, a new version of “The Jungle Book” and a live action adaptation of “Dumbo.”

An exclusive new look at the upcoming film “Little Boy” previews the heartwarming story about the indescribable love a child has for his father just weeks from the premiere.

In theaters everywhere on April 24 through Open Road Films, “Little Boy” follows a little boy named Pepper whose father is drafted during World War II. Willing to do whatever it takes to get his father back home safely, Pepper takes an oath of faith and searches for a miracle.

“How could I get bigger faith?” Pepper fervently asks the pastor in a brand new clip from the film.

“The list, the ancient list,” the priest, portrayed by Tom Wilkinson, responds. “For centuries people believed that if you do this list it’ll make your faith powerful. This is what you have to do: feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, visit those in prison, clothe the naked…”

“Naked?” Pepper adorably inquires.

“Visit the sick, and bury the dead,” Father Oliver continues.

“Little Boy” stars David Henrie, Ali Landry, Kevin James, Eduardo Verastegui and child star Jakob Salvati. Written and directed by Smithsonian Institute Award-winning Alejandro Monteverde, the film highlights themes of faith, hope and love in the face of adversity. Born and raised in Mexico, the director said his success in Hollywood is not nearly as important as his relationship with God.

Christian Post Report – The last episode of the hit medical TV drama series “Grey’s Anatomy” somehow gave fans the relief when they found out that Derek (Patrick Dempsey) is really in love with Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and that he can’t live without her.

Now that McDreamy is back on her side at Grey Sloan, some other interesting stories are about to happen in this week’s showing.

Titled “When I Grow Up,” a synopsis was posted on The Futon Critic and it indicated that the health establishment will host a school field trip. For what seems to be a fun-filled excursion, the tour will take into a dramatic turn when the kids witness the arrival of two injured local cops into the emergency room.

TV Line reports that Callie (Sara Ramirez) will be doing a surgery operation on the police captain named Jack. The character is played by “Southland” and “The Returned” actor Kevin Alejandro. Although the actor is only signed up for one guest appearance, the media outlet said that the character might be getting a recurring a role in the ABC series.

Still discussing about the field trip, the summary from TFC said that Stephanie (Jerrika Hinton) will “set her eyes” on one of the kids’ chaperones. According to reports, actor Taylor John Smith from “Hawaii Five-O” will take on the role of the said debonair.

And then there’s Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) who is about to “face her feelings” for Owen (Kevin McKidd), tonight on “Grey’s Anatomy” Season 11, this Thursday, April 2 at 8 p.m. on ABC.

The mini-series, “The Bible” will air sequel, “A.D.: Beyond the Bible” on NBC.

Christian Post Report – “A.D. – The Bible Continues” premieres on Sunday, April 5, to coincide with the Easter holiday. It’s a time of celebration for Christians, and the new series from Mark Burnett and Roma Downey captures the turmoil and emotions of those witnesses to the death and resurrection of Jesus the Christ.

The series opens with the final moments of Jesus’ life played out: charges of blasphemy brought by the High Priest, Pontius Pilate washing his hands of accountability in Jesus’ death, and the crucifixion. Viewers are introduced to a man desperately trying to spare his own life in the midst of accusations and absolute turmoil.

One problem, though, is that unless a viewer is familiar with the biblical account of the resurrection, the characters may seem confusing, given that their names are not used until much later in the episode. How can one distinguish between Herod and Pilate, John and Peter, all key figures in the post-resurrection story? Hopefully this will be resolved and made more clear as the series moves along.

However, Claudia, Pontius Pilate’s wife was a stand-out character who had some memorable dialogue.

“Killing Him won’t be the end of it,” Claudia warns her husband Pilate as he is deciding whether to sentence Jesus to death.

This was one of the best lines in the episode, as she takes a stand against her husband’s actions and openly defies him. This is also the case with Joseph of Arimathea, another sympathetic character whose sympathy for Jesus and Mary, His mother, is rare given the mood of the time. The simple act of offering his own tomb for Jesus to be buried in is heart-wrenching since Mary has just seen her baby boy brutally executed. It’s a sincerely touching moment. There are intense performances by each and every cast member who bring an additional element to the series.

“A.D.” follows Burnett and Downey’s initial “The Bible” series, which did remarkable on the small screen. The couple has a great sense of purpose in releasing “A.D.” on Easter Sunday, which is to continue spreading the message of the Gospel. “A.D.” is done in the same manner as “The Bible” yet incorporates CGI to represent the Holy Spirit, which is heavily featured in the series. Yet in the premiere, it’s easy to be confused, as the Spirit is represented by a flash of light, and then a soldier appears at the tomb as a separate light glows from within the tomb.

The series’ initial episode is dramatic and while it takes some liberties with the characters’ representations and thoughts, the Bible is closely adhered to. The diverse cast presents a real-life accuracy of the time period, which is what Burnett and Downey had hoped for in their casting decisions.

“A.D.” premieres Sunday, April 5, on NBC.

Christian Post Report – CBS’ hit sit-com TV series “The Big Bang Theory” will finally return this week with yet another brand new episode.

Titled “The Skywalker Incursion,” followers of the show might already have some idea on what this particular segment will focus on. In a synopsis posted by The Futon Critic, it was indicated that Sheldon (Jim Parsons) and Leonard (Johnny Galecki) will see the invitation to speak at UC Berkeley as a chance for them to finally meet an idol.

According to Hollywood Hills (via Latin Post), the two geniuses will try to sneak from the event to meet their film maker idol, George Lucas.

In a promo video provided by the network, Sheldon was seen with Leonard in a car as they drove towards the Star Wars maker’s place.

“I’m so excited, and I just can’t hide it!” exclaims the physicist in the video.

But things won’t be as smooth as from what they expect when it was later revealed in the teaser that Sheldon will get chased by security guards with Tasers around the ranch.

They probably have let themselves in without an invitation.

Moreover, the summary from TFC indicates that Bernadette (Melissa Rauch) and Howard (Simon Helberg) will be battling over “the fate of his Dr. Who TARDIS.” To put an end on the dispute, Raj (Kunal Nayyar) and Amy (Mayim Bialik) will offer a game of ping pong.

The reports also indicated the stars slated to appear on the show including Tate Ellington as Mitchell, and actors Michael Dempsey and Mark Barrett as security guards.

“The Big Bang Theory” Season 8 airs Thursday, at 8 p.m. on CBS.

Christian Post Report – “Heroes” fans have been hoping for more of the original cast members to reprise their roles in “Heroes Reborn.” Though we won’t be seeing fan favorites Hayden Panettiere back as the indestructible cheerleader Claire, Zachary Quinto as villain Sylar, or Ali Larter as Niki Sanders, one of the original ‘Heroes’ has been recently confirmed to be back in the reboot.

Masi Oka, who played space-time manipulator Hiro Nakamura on “Heroes,” will reprise his role as a guest star. Oka is currently a series regular in “Hawaii Five-0.”

“I’m excited to return to my ‘Heroes’ roots,” Oka said in a press release. “Hiro Nakamura was such an inspirational role to play, and I’m hoping the fans will enjoy seeing him back on TV.”

Jack Coleman also returns as Jack Bennett, also known as “the man with the horn-rimmed glasses.” New cast members include Ryan Guzman (“The Boy Next Door”), Zachary Levi (“Chuck”), Robbie Kay (“Once Upon a Time”), Danika Yarosh (“Shameless”), Judith Shekoni (“The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn- Part 2”), Kiki Sukezane (“Death Yankee 3”), Henry Zebrowski (“A to Z”) and Gatlin Green (“Criminal Minds”).

The series comes from executive producers Tim Kring, James Middleton and Peter Elkoff, and “chronicles the lives of ordinary people who discover that they possess extraordinary abilities.” It will run for 13 episodes and will feature a brand-new story and set of characters.

“We are thrilled to have Masi back in the ‘Heroes’ family. The character of Hiro Nakamura was such a huge part of the first series’ success, and a gigantic fan favorite. We felt the fans would really love seeing him back in action again,” King said in a statement.

“Heroes Reborn” is set to premiere sometime in 2015 on NBC. However, prior to the premiere, fans will be able to tune into an online prequel to the series titled “Heroes Reborn: Digital Series” on Hulu and NBC’s other digital platforms.

Christian Post Report – British Prime Minister David Cameron has written an Easter Message where he said that even though he can’t call himself a “model church-going, God-fearing Christian,” he relies strongly on his faith, and believes that Christianity is “the bedrock of a good society.”

Some, such as Madeleine Teahan, the associate editor of the Catholic Herald, have said that the message is an attempt to “woo Christians” ahead of the general elections.

Cameron wrote in an article for Premier Christianity that all people can celebrate the values of Easter, which he identified as “compassion, forgiveness, kindness, hard work and responsibility.”

He added that according to his beliefs, “the Christian message is the bedrock of a good society,” because compassion “is the center piece of a good community.” The British PM added that faith is an inspiration for millions of people to make a positive difference in their communities.

Cameron argued that he has attempted to lead his administration by those principles, such as helping the poorest and most vulnerable of people in society through tax cuts.

He also noted that he’s had disagreements with many in the Anglican Communion on some of the positions he’s taken up, specifically his support for gay marriage.

“I know that some disagree with those policies — including a number within the Church of England. But I would urge those individuals not to dismiss the people who proposed those policies as devoid of morality — or assume those policies are somehow amoral themselves,” Cameron asserted.

Both the Church of England and the Catholic Church in the U.K. have opposed Cameron on certain issues, notably the legalization of same-sex marriage, which became law in 2014.

Cameron concluded his article by stating what he believes is the “heart of the Christian message:”

“I hope everyone can share in the belief of trying to lift people up rather than count people out. Those values and principles are not the exclusive preserve of one faith or religion. They are something I hope everyone in our country believes.”

He continued: “Easter is all about remembering the importance of change, responsibility, and doing the right thing for the good of our children. And today, that message matters more than ever.”

Teahan argued that Cameron’s article is an attempt to “woo Christians” ahead of the U.K. general elections, which are scheduled for May 7.

She said that despite the wording in his article, Cameron is “scared of proclaiming his Christianity.”

The associate editor of the Catholic Herald criticized his presentation of the Christian message and Easter, adding: “What’s ironic here is that the prime minister, through trying to convey he is not afraid to call himself Christian, has actually communicated that he seems terrified to identify as one. The prime minister is entitled to hold whatever religious beliefs he wants and should stand by them rather than cynically trying to woo the Christian vote ahead of May 7.”

Christian Post Report – Things are definitely getting more intense and exciting as the fourth season of the hit political drama TV series “Scandal” continues to air this week with episode titled “Honor Thy Father.”

Spoiler reports from Carter Matt indicated that Olivia (Kerry Washington) and her gladiators will face a big challenge in this particular episode as it was indicated that a congressman will desperately call for their help with regards to his father’s nearing execution date.

But this won’t be the only thing that Liv and her gladiators will be facing. David Rosen (Joshua Malina) will be strengthening his case against the B613 by hiring the secret organization’s former agents.

In relation to B613, a report from Penn Live pointed out that Jake Ballard (Scott Foley) will transform from the man whom Pope has known to someone that will threaten to kill everyone on his path.

According to the site, Liv’s ex-flame and former B613 agent won’t be “going down without a fight” as he takes on a mission that would likely involve David Rosen’s issues.

In a preview provided by ABC, Jake was seen showing his true colors to everyone.

“If someone comes after me, I’ll kill them. And then, I’ll kill Liv,” Jake gave an ominous warning.

Followers of the hit series might already be getting some hints that that the current season could see the demise of one or two of its characters, and as Carter Matt speculated, it could either be Jake or Rosen.

“Scandal” Season 4 upcoming episode, “Honor Thy Father,” will also see guest appearances from actors Portia de Rossi and George Newber, this Thursday at 9 p.m. on ABC.

Christian Post Report – Update: April 2, 12:10 PM: Seventy people were killed and 79 others wounded after masked gunmen associated with the Al-Shabaab terror group attacked Garissa University in Kenya early Thursday morning. The Kenya National Disaster Operation Center confirmed late Thursday that over 500 students have been rescued. The university is located near Nairobi, Kenya’s capital city.

Masked gunmen attacked a university near Nairobi, Kenya, Thursday morning, killing at least 70 people and wounding many others, including several Christians.

“I have [already] counted 14 bodies of dead people being carried out of the campus by a Red Cross ambulance, and they include two of our officers who were also killed. We are finding it difficult to access the compound because some of the attackers are on top of a building and are firing at us whenever we try to gain entry,” a policeman told Daily Mail Online.

The group known as al-Shabaab, a jihadist terrorist group based in Somalia, claimed responsibility for the massacre and said that they had numerous hostages before police were finally able to gain control and help the victims.

“We sorted people out and released the Muslims,” Sheikh Abdiasis Abu Musab, the group’s military operations spokesman told Reuters. “There are many dead bodies of Christians inside the building. We are also holding many Christians alive. Fighting still goes on inside the college.”

It took officials eight hours to regain control of the university, and at least one member of al-Shabaab had been arrested. The exact total number of assailants is not known, but one blogger told CNN affiliate NTV that there were “probably more than 10. We believe the attackers were wearing something close to military fatigues.”

“They surrounded the mosque … we don’t know why they were surrounding the mosque,” blogger Robert Alai Onyango said.

From there, the gunmen moved into a girls’ hostel and began firing. At least 300 students managed to escape and seek refuge at a Kenya Defense Forces camp. The university has 700 students from across the country and is the only place of higher education in the area.

“It was horrible, there was shooting everywhere,” Augustine Alanga, a student at the university, told BBC’s “Newsday.”

Sixty-five people were wounded and four were airlifted to Nairobi for immediate treatment.

“We have 49 casualties so far, all with bullet and (shrapnel) wounds,” a doctor at Garissa hospital told Reuters.

Students had been warned that an attack could be imminent because strangers had been seen in the town and were suspected to be terrorists. Unfortunately, that warning came true despite the college being closed.

Samsung is expected to be bringing in strengthened specs later in the year when it debuts the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 with higher quality features compared to its predecessor.

Christian Post Report – Rumors have escalated Samsung may release its next generation phablet in late 2015 with its Samsung Galaxy Note 5, expected to feature as many specifications as the Japanese electronics conglomerate can include.

Samsung may be upping the ante on super AMOLED technology from the Galaxy Note 4 and prepping the Galaxy Note 5 with 4K resolution. The 4K display technology, rumored to also be included in the Galaxy S7 smartphone handset when it launches in 2016, is set to go mainstream for a majority of devices within the year. This means, users are likely to see the Galaxy Note 5 sporting 4K resolution in a 5.9 inch phablet.

One of the improvements Samsung is likely to visit on their upcoming flagship device will be a suitable battery to go with its more advanced resolution. With a 4K screen eating up more battery life, users may expect a more powerful 4,000 mAh cell to increase the Galaxy Note 5’s power by as much as 20 percent.

According to the team working on projects involving PC Oculus Rift VR, the Galaxy Note 5 will feature Virtual Reality functionality to make it a perfect companion for the VR headset, and with Samsung having earlier unveiled wireless charging capabilities for its Galaxy S6, users should expect the Galaxy Note 5 phablet to sport this capability, as well.

Gadget analysts are suggesting the Galaxy Note 5 may have Samsung’s first ever 20MP rear facing camera, and a 5MP front shooter. With Samsung’s rival Apple heavily promoting its Apple Watch’s Force Touch technology, Samsung may be beefing up its devices’ TouchID function, and adding a higher end retinal scanning security capability into the bargain.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 is expected to be available in stores by the fourth quarter of 2015, and while no price point information has been leaked so far, speculations run on a non-contract retail price of between $900 to $1,000 when the Galaxy Note 5 hits the market.
