Washed Clean: Serving the Master

John 13:1-17, 31-35

Christian Post Report – This was not their first Passover Feast, but it would be their last with the Master. The disciples didn’t know that, though, when they gathered in the upper room for the meal. The seder reminded them of the lambs’ blood painted on their ancestors’ doorposts. The presence of that blood had saved the Jews from the death angel (Ex. 12:23 NLT) and convinced Pharaoh to let them leave Egypt and slavery. The disciples didn’t understand that their Rabbi was the sacrificial Lamb whose blood would soon be painted across their hearts. His blood would forever free them and us from slavery to sin and death.

As the meal was being served, Jesus stood up. All eyes followed Him as He took off His outer clothing and wrapped a towel around His waist. The men wondered what He was doing but didn’t dare ask. After filling a bowl with water, the Lord kneeled and began to wash the first disciple’s feet. Then He moved to the next one and the next.

Had Jesus lost His mind? They exchanged nervous glances and squirmed as their Master’s hands touched their feet. How could He debase Himself with such an intimate, lowly act? They’d never dream of doing such a thing. Please don’t, they wanted to say. Let a servant do this.

Peter, always the spokesman, tried to stop Him. Jesus assured him that someday he’d understand, but for now, the washing must be allowed. In that case, do my hands and head, too, Peter said. But Jesus pointed out that only his feet needed washing, since he had bathed already for the feast.

Jesus knew, of course, that one of these friends wasn’t clean. For three years, Judas had seen Jesus up close, serving, teaching, loving. But despite the privilege of witnessing all this firsthand, Judas had his own agenda and priorities. So with feet freshly washed by the hands of God, the betrayer would soon lead soldiers and religious officials to where they could arrest Him.

Jesus washed the disciples’ feet in order to set an example of love and service. When He said that disciples are not above their Master, He also had us in mind. With no earthly or cosmic reason to be humble, Jesus made Himself nothing and modeled humility for us. He commands us to do the same out of love for Him and others.

News like that can be as hard to swallow as the bitter herbs of the seder. Faced with a roomful of feet that need washing, how eager are we to take up our towels? Serving for us might mean driving an elderly friend to appointments, visiting regularly with the sick, helping a single mom with her children or home repairs. This Easter, may we reach out to others with eager hands and hearts washed clean by the blood of the Master.

Al-Qaeda Frees 300 Prisoners in Yemen; Houthi Rebels Storm Presidential Palace as Saudi Arabia Escalates Attacks to Defend Yemeni Gov’t

Christian Post Report – Terror group al-Qaeda has reportedly freed close to 300 prisoners in Yemen as it battles for control over territory. Houthi rebels have meanwhile stormed the presidential palace in Aden, despite airstrikes by a Saudi-led coalition seeking to protect what it says is a legitimate government.

The Telegraph reported on Thursday that while the identity of those freed from Al Mukalla prison is not yet clear, several reports have said they include well-known jihadis.

Houthi rebels, supporting former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh, took over the capital of Sanaa in 2014, and are looking to overthrow the rule of President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi, who insists he’s still in power.

Saudi Arabia has backed Hadi’s government and has launched military operations against the rebels.

BBC News reported on Thursday that Houthi rebels managed to break into the presidential palace in Aden following heavy clashes, which involved tanks and armored vehicles.

While Hadi has already fled to Saudi Arabia to seek refuge, Aden was recognized as his last seat of power in the country.

Iran has also been accused by several Gulf States of supporting the Houthi rebels with financial and military support, though the government of President Hassan Rouhani has denied the claims.

BBC noted that there are several warring factions in Yemen — the Shia-led Houthis, who are seeking control of the entire country; forces loyal to President Hadi, who is backed by Saudi Arabia; al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, which is opposed to both Hadi and the Houthis rebels; and the recently emerged Yemen offshoot of ISIS, which is seeking to eclipse al-Qaeda.

UNICEF said that the weakest members of society are paying the highest price in the ongoing war, and said that least 62 children have been killed and another 30 have been injured in fighting in the space of a week.

“Children are in desperate need of protection, and all parties to the conflict should do all in their power to keep children safe,” said Julien Harneis, UNICEF Yemen Representative.

“The escalation in violence and the rapidly deteriorating humanitarian situation is exacerbating already precarious conditions for children in the country, with widespread food insecurity, severe acute malnutrition and increased rates of child recruitment,” the report added.

UNICEF said that it’s working to provide essentials such as water, sanitation and health supplies, as well as vaccinations, nutrition, education, psychosocial and mine awareness programs to affected children.

‘Vikings’ Season 3 News, Spoilers: Floki Regrets Slaying Athelstan, Season 4 Shooting Begins This Month

The official season 3 poster of Vikings

Christian Post Report – The last episode of History Channel’s hit historical drama TV series “Vikings” Season 3 saw the demise of everyone’s favorite Athelstan (George Blagden) in the hands of Floki (Gustaf Skarsgard).

Titled “Born Again,” followers of the show saw the Priest experiencing what he calls the rebirth of faith to his Christian god. This doesn’t look good in the eyes of Kattegat’s shipbuilder, whose mission, on the other hand, is to appease the will of the Norse gods.

Seeing the signs of blood dripping from a wooden sculpture, Floki sneakily heads downtown to hunt Athelstan. He then finds the latter kneeling in prayer. Athelstan greeted Floki with a smile and then gets struck to death.

Aside from Ragnar (Travis Fimmel), who was obviously stricken with his friend’s death, series creator Michael Hirst teased that Floki will also be affected with the murder he has committed.

When asked if he will regret it, Hirst said “yes.”

“He’s divided about it, but his divisions are very deep and they don’t come out immediately. If you watch this season, you’ll see exactly how he feels about it and it’s very emotional. You really get the full impact of that in the final episode,” he told Zap2It.

Meanwhile, for those who wished for the Norsemen saga to stay in the airwaves, recent news indicates that “Vikings” Season 4 is already scheduled to commence its filming production this April in Ireland.

Hirst said that the next chapter will consist of more episodes than the current one.

“I think we’re doing 16. I have a huge hope that we can continue [beyond that],” he told Radio Times.

For the meantime, “Vikings” Season 3’s upcoming episode titled “Paris” will air this Thursday, April 2 on the History Channel.

‘Pretty Little Liars’ Season 6 Cast News, Spoilers: Series Ending to Be ‘Fast-Paced’ and Emotional

Pretty Little Liars FACEBOOK/ Pretty Little Liars

The cast of ABC’s ‘Pretty Little Liars” Season 5

Christian Post Report – One phase is finally over for the Rosewood teens, Hanna (Ashley Benson), Emily (Shay Mitchell), Aria (Lucy Hale) and Spencer (Troian Bellisario) as the name of the mysterious “A” is finally revealed.

However, knowing the name Charles DiLaurentis is only but the first part of the solution. A report from Enstarz indicated that the upcoming sixth season of the hit teen drama TV series “Pretty Little Liars” will go full throttle to take on the “A” mystery as fast as possible.

Citing series creator Marlene King, in an interview with E! Online, it was revealed that the next chapter will take on the matter straight away.

“The fallout of what they go through definitely leaves them scarred and in need of healing and rebonding with the families and their bed buddies and their loved ones,” King said. “[Season 6] really about answers and closure for all of them. It is an ending to the story that we started so long ago, but it’s a very fast-paced ending to the story.”

Series writer Maya Goldsmith revealing further about the forthcoming season.

“We will spend some more time in the dollhouse [next season],” she told Bustle. “The time period is very compressed, over a period of weeks, so the urgency is very heightened.”

She went on to say that “PLL” followers should still hold on to their theories on who Charles really is.

“You can never rule anyone out [as an A suspect] because A always has ways of monitoring one situation and being somewhere else, so no, you can never rule anyone out,” Goldsmith explained.

“Pretty Little Liars” Season 6 is slated to begin airing in mid-2015.

‘Doctor Who’ – ‘Sherlock’ Crossover Episode News, Rumors: Producer Steven Moffat Addresses Rumors

Steven Moffat Reuters/File

Steven Moffat accepted a 2014 Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Miniseries for the Season 3 finale of “Sherlock.”

Christian Post Report – BBC’s two iconic TV shows, “Doctor Who” and “Sherlock,” have long been subjected to rumors that a crossover episode could happen.

Fans of the two titles strongly speculate that there’s really a big possibility for it given the fact that they are both written and produced by the same person, Steven Moffat.

A report from Screen Rant indicated that the network and Moffat have actually been considering the idea, but that things aren’t as easy as people would think.

Moffat’s talked about whether or not the modern-day, highly intelligent detective could really meet the Time Doctor. He said he would be more open to the idea if not for both series’ fans.

“My instinct — and this is probably from years of doing Doctor Who — is I’m just such a tart. If people want to, we should give it to them,” he told Entertainment Weekly. “But I got persuaded by Mark, Benedict, [executive producer Sue Vertue] and Martin saying, ‘Look, it will never be as good as they think it’s going to be,’ and then I say, ‘Yes, but we’ll just bang it out and make it as good.’ ‘Yeah, but you can’t give everybody everything they want all the time.’

“I’m in the camp of giving them everything they want. But I think they’re sane and right and I’m just a tart,” Moffat added.

Entertainment Weekly speculated that it wouldn’t really be a surprise if BBC “remains reluctant” to do the crossover. Fans rooting for the tie-in should be wary of how it could “create a major ripple” in each of the series’ canons, Screen Rant suggested.

“Doctor Who” Season 9 is slated to air this fall while “Sherlock” will air its Christmas Special this December and its 4-episode Season 4 in 2016.

Final Fantasy XV Release Date, Character News: Hajime Tabata Reveals Improvements for Battle System

Final Fantasy XV Youtube/Screenshot

For those who were closely following the developments of Square Enix’s upcoming action role-playing video game title, “Final Fantasy XV,” they might have already known that the main cast will generally be comprised of male characters.

Christian Post Report – However, recent updates indicated that there’s a possibility for an opposite sex to join the all-male ensemble. This particular information originated from none other than the game’s director, Hajime Tabata.

“It’s possible we’ll have female characters join the party as guests. But since it’s an all-mate party, when you have a female character as a guest, their behavior might change because a woman is around,” Tabata told Famitsu.

In a previous statement given to Gamespot, Tabata revealed that the all-male party was intended to make the upcoming game sequel “more approachable to players”

“Having them all the same gender made sense in that way,” he added.

Famitsu’s conversation with Tabata also leads to the issue of FF XV’s battle system, which was featured in the demo version, Episode Duscae.

“The battle system from the demo is about 50 percent complete. I want to level-headedly respond to requests for improvement,” the game director said. “The full retail version will have things like magic and co-op chains, which I feel will really freshen up how players approach combat.”

Speaking of Duscae, Tabata also made mention of Ramuh: “Because Ramuh has special specifications in the demo, there will be systematic improvements in the full release.”

Square Enix still hasn’t provided a concrete release date for the game. It rumored, however, that the studio is now more than halfway through development.

Rev Robert H. Schuller, Crystal Cathedral and ‘Hour of Power’ Founder, Has Died

Just hours after his former church congregation issued a call for prayer for his health, family members of the influential Rev. Robert H. Schuller has announced his death at the age of 88.

Christian Post Report – Sheila Schuller Coleman and her husband, Jim, left, share applause with congregants at the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, Calif., as her father Robert H. Schuller, names her senior pastor over the church he led for 55 years, on Sunday July 11, 2010.

The Associated Press reported via Twitter just at 10:23 a.m. ET that Carol Schuller Milner, Schuller’s daughter, had reported his death.

Schuller’s grandson, who has been leading the church founded by former members of the Crystal Cathedral congregation since 2013, confirmed his passing via Twitter, writing: “My Grandfather Robert H. Schuller passed this morning into eternal life with Christ.”

Schuller, who lost his wife, Arvella Schuller, in Feb. 2014, passed away Thursday at a nursing home in Los Angeles. He had been suffering since 2013 with esophagal cancer, and had not been undergoing chemotherapy or radiation treatment, the Orange County Register reports.

A memorial service for Arvella Schuller, who along with her husband, Rev. Robert H. Schuller, was a co-founder of Crystal Cathedral Ministries, was held late Tuesday afternoon. Arvella died last week after a brief illness at the age of 84, [FILE].

The Christian Post reported Wednesday evening that members of Schuller’s former Crystal Cathedral congregation, now going by the name Shepherd’s Grove, had issued a prayer request on its Facebook page due to Schuller’s “swiftly declining” health.

“We at Hour of Power and Shepherd’ Grove are deeply saddened to report that our founding pastor, Dr. Robert H. Schuller’s health is swiftly declining,” read the post. “Please join us in prayer for him and the entire Schuller family during this difficult time. May our most precious Lord and Savior grant them peace and comfort as they gather at his side.”

A view of Crystal Cathedral, the glass-walled megachurch in Garden Grove, Calif., is seen this Aug. 10, 2011 photo.

Schuller and his wife, Arvella, founded the Crystal Cathedral church in Garden Grove, Orange County, California, in 1951, with the reverend starting his ministry outreach by preaching at a drive-in movie theater.

In 1970, Schuller started the massively popular and influential “Hour of Power” religious program, which still airs today and is helmed by his grandson, Bobby.

Ten years later, the pastor officially started services in his new Crystal Cathedral, an expansive glass and steel sanctuary with at least 10,000 windows and, by that point, home to just as many members.

Things took a turn for the worse for Schuller’s Crystal Cathedral Ministries, however, when the church found itself deep in debt by 2010. The ministry filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, owing more than $7 million to creditors.

Crystal Cathedral was eventually sold to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange for $57.5 million, and was renamed the Christ Cathedral in 2012.

By that time, relations among the leading Schuller clan had broken down, with the elder Shculler and his wife, Arvella, quitting Crystal Cathedral Ministries and filing a multimillion-dollar lawsuit against the ministry for copyright infringement. The couple was awarded less than a million dollars, and their appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court denied.

The original Crystal Cathedral congregation also splintered off into at least two groups, one called Hope Center of Christ led by Sheila Schuller Coleman, former pastor and CEO and president of the ministry, and the other, Shepherd’s Grove, led by the elder Schuller’s grandson, Bobby.

The Rev. Robert H. Schuller and his wife are survived by their children, Robert A. Schuller, who had also briefly led Crystal Cathedral church, Sheila, Jeanne, Carol and Gretchen.
