Should Women Be Leaders in the Church? — The Question That ‘Preachers of Detroit’ Refuses to Sweep Under the Rug (Watch a Sneak Peek)

“Preachers of Detroit,” the Midwest spinoff of the controversial and popular “Preachers of L.A.” reality show, has put front and center in its early episodes the debate about what roles women are permitted to hold in the church.

    Christians remain divided over what perimeters they believe the Bible lays out for women called to ministry.

    Some believers point to passages like Christian Post Report – 1 Timothy 3:2, which states that a bishop, or overseer, is to be “faithful to his wife …” — indicating that a Christian holding that position must be male.

    However, others argue that there’s biblical support that leadership roles in the church are not restricted by gender, as evidenced by early church figures such as Junia, an apostle, and Phoebe, a deacon — based on the particular translation of the texts where these women are mentioned.

    In “Preachers of Detroit,” that elephant — complicated to some, and an open-and-shut case for others — refuses to leave the room. Or, at least, Bishop Corletta Vaughn has been making it her personal mission to make sure every cast member acknowledges the elephant.

    Specifically, Vaughn, senior pastor of The Holy Ghost Cathedral and chief apostle to Go Tell It Evangelistic Ministry Worldwide, has raised the issue each and every episode of “Preachers of Detroit” with fellow minister and accomplished gospel singer Dorinda Clark-Cole, and anyone else who will listen.

    Clark-Cole, who uses the title of “evangelist” because her church affiliation does not ordain women as pastors, serves at the Greater Emmanuel Institutional Church of God in Christ under the leadership of Bishop J. Drew Sheard.

    As viewers of the Oxygen series well know, Clark-Cole and Vaughn, the only two females among the seven-member cast of ministers, have been getting into it about the “place” of women in church every single episode — either because the bishop truly refuses to let the matter rest, or producers think it makes for great TV.

    The preview of episode four of “Preachers of Detroit” indicates that that the issue will be hammered out some more, during a double-dinner date with Vaughn and Clark-Cole and their respective husbands.

    “A lot of men are against my position. They hate me because I’m a woman. When I was consecrated, preachers stood up in their pulpits and they began to quote the scripture that a woman cannot be a bishop. I know that sexism is a systemic problem in our church and in our world. But I believe now that I can be a voice,” Vaughn shared in an aside with viewers in the premiere episode.

    In the second episode, the women exchanged words about their particular positions on women serving the church:

    Clarke-Cole: “God has allowed women to have a place in the church, and I honor that. I honor your position. I think that me as the role I play as an evangelist, as a preacher, I think that I remember that my husband is always over me.”

    Vaughn: “But you never hear the scripture that we mutually submit to one another.”

    Clarke-Cole: “That’s your opinion. … Mine would be that my husband will always be head of the home. … We would never be where we are even as strong women in ministry if it were not for the men that have laid the foundation.”

    Since the issue has yet to be resolved, it might in fact require a full season for the women to come to terms. Will Evangelist Clark-Cole experience a change of heart? Or Bishop Vaughn give up ground on her position? — Probably not, as Christians have been at odds over the issue of women’s roles, both in the home and in church, for decades.

    “Preachers of Detroit” airs Fridays at 8 p.m. ET on Oxygen. Other cast members featured in the reality show are: Bishop Charles H. Ellis III, Pastor Tim Alden, Pastor David Bullock, Bishop Clarence Langston, and Pastor Don William Shelby Jr.

    Christian Post Report – Fresh from the Apple rumors mill, recent news pointed out that the next-gen iPhone and its Plus variant will arrive with a higher amount of RAM and a pre-installed subscriber identity module.

    A report from GSM Arena cited an unnamed person who claims to have some knowledge with “Apple’s future product plans” saying that the iPhone 6s and 6S Plus will likely be launched with a 2GB of RAM.

    The Cupertino-based tech giant has been shipping 1GB of RAM since 2012 so this news could mean that the company is already on the way of upgrading their devices. Several websites even went to say that this could also imply that users can now let background apps and tabs in Safari left for longer time without comprising greatly the unit’s battery life.

    “What is the benefit of additional RAM? Extra RAM enables your smartphone to handle multiple tasks at once,” Amit Chowdhry wrote for Forbes.com. “This means it can handle many more tabs in a browser and faster responses from apps since more data can be stored in the memory, thus reducing the need for the smartphone to constantly access the slower flash storage. The difference in RAM is especially noticeable when you are playing games on your device.”

    Still another rumor indicated that the upcoming reiteration of the 6 and 6 Plus might come with a pre-installed SIM like that of the iPad Air 2.

    In the case of the tablet device, the pre-installed SIM feature gives users quick access for data plan from any participating carrier company by just going to the Settings. This also eliminates the need for any contract signing while giving owners the freedom to switch carriers of their choice.

    The newest versions of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus could be outed sometime in the middle of the year.

    Will the OnePlus Two prove to be as reliable and spec-heavy as its predecessor, the OnePlus One?

    Christian Post Report – OnePlus Co-Founder Carl Pei revealed that his tech company is now preparing to enter into a new smartphone product category next month and has plans on “revamping the design” for the next OnePlus reiteration.

    A report from Business Insider cited a source who claims to have knowledge with the issue saying that the Chinese company will be handing out a new look to its well-received mobile device.

    As detailed out, the next-gen OnePlus phone will likely to sport a metal frame, consequently replacing the polycarbonate wrappings of their 2014 flagship.

    The premium styling, according to the source, would also eventually make the OnePlus 2 arrive with a higher than expected price tag.

    Launched in April, the first OnePlus phone series kicked off for $300 for its 16GB model. Phone Arena meanwhile speculates that the pricing will likely to remain a lot cheaper when compared to any of the giant flagship brands like Apple with their iPhones and Samsung with their Galaxy Ss.

    The site however, noted that the redesigning plans are yet to be finalized.

    Pei informed NDTV Gadgets about the future of the company now that it has already gained traction in an ever-competitive technology market.

    “For our first year, we’ve focused on just one product, the OnePlus One. Next year, we’re looking into experimenting with different types of form factors and different types of products,” Pei said.

    As for the OnePlus Two release date, Pei previously told the media that the device can be expected to be unveiled in “Q2 or Q3 of 2015.”

    Christian Post Report – Following the massive discounts of the current-gen Microsoft Surface Pro 3, currently selling at $800, speculations arise pointing out to the arrival of the tablet’s next reiteration, the Surface Pro 4.

    A report from the Inquistr cited PC Pro saying that the Redmond, Washington-based tech giant might have some groundbreaking device that it will unveil probably towards the mid-part of the year.

    The site went on to say that the alleged Surface Pro 4 will likely to hit the stores in two variants: a 12-inch model and a 14-incher device. Both, according to PC Pro will have a 2160 x 1440 screen resolution and will house an Intel Core M Broadwell chip. Furthermore, it will be running on the latest Windows 10 OS.

    Set to rival yet another popular productivity device, the Apple MacBook Air 2015, the Surface Pro 4 will have a 16 GB of RAM and a storage capacity of 1 TB. Rumored to come out in the March 9 Apple Watch unveiling event, the 12.9-incher Retina tablet will meanwhile feature a sleeker, more streamlined design.

    Another competition in the market would be that of the already outed Dell XPS 13 laptop which, according to IBTimes, houses a 13-inch full HD display, an Intel Core i5 processor clocking at 1.6 GHz, and a 4 GB of RAM.

    It has also been found out that Microsoft is at the moment, working on other devices to add up in the Surface Pro line. IBTimes said that it could either be a Surface Pro Mini tablet or a Surface-branded flagship smartphone. It was claimed that the mini edition will be powered with Intel Atom processor.

    Christian Post Report – It’s a Western Conference showdown as the Golden State Warriors welcome the Dallas Mavericks at the Oracle Arena in the NBA regular season.

    Considered as heavyweight contenders in their respective divisions, the Warriors hold the best record in the West at 47-12. The Mavs are 40-23 and are sixth in the conference, following their most recent loss to the Portland Trail Blazers.

    Probably with the best starting five in the league, the Warriors’ offense is heavily anchored by their Splash Brothers.

    Point guard Stephen Curry is one of the leading runners for this year’s MVP and his statistics display his talent. He leads the team in three major categories, 23.8 points, 7.8 assists and 2.1 steals per game.

    Even more impressive is his shooting acumen, making baskets 48 percent of the time while going 41 percent from beyond the arc.

    Equally impressive is his teammate Klay Thompson. He has a slightly lower scoring average with 20.5 points per game, but shoots 43 percent from the three-point line. He also has the capability to catch fire as displayed by his previous performances this season.

    Just like the Warriors, the Mavs also have a very potent lineup. Rajon Rondo may be struggling a bit since his move from the Boston Celtics, but the point guard can still step up to the plate when needed.

    Dirk Nowitzki is still a very reliable scorer, and with the patented fade-away still trumping defenses to this day, he can make a difference.

    Tyson Chandler is still one of the league’s best rebounders and defending big men as he is an active player who always tries to alter the offensive player’s shots.

    This will be the third of four times that these two teams will meet. In the first two matches, the Warriors ran away with comfortable victories.

    In particular, their first meeting at Oracle Arena resulted in 128-114 win for the hosts, with Curry putting on an impressive performance with 51 points and going 10-of-16 from beyond the three-point line.

    Chandler Parsons was the high man for the Mavs with 24 points, while Nowitzki struggled with 15 points on 4-of-15 shooting.

    Christian Post Report – Ever since the Retina technology made its way to the MacBook Pros, a lot of Apple fans have been waiting for the tech to reach the company’s Air lineup. Unfortunately, the MacBook Air with Retina Display release date has been delayed since last year.

    However, a recent report may have confirmed that the new ultraportable MacBooks are coming very soon.

    According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, the new MacBook Air with a higher resolution display is already under way. The laptop is already under mass production, but they would not be shipped yet until April or June.

    Based on previous rumors, the new MacBook Air with Retina Display will be Apple’s first laptop that boasts a 12-inch display rather than the usual 11.6 and 13.3-inch models.

    In addition, an earlier report from Mark Gurman of 9to5mac also mentioned that the device will have a “radically new design.”

    Dubbed as the “MacBook Stealth” (as it’s called internally), the device takes out the full-sized USB ports, the MagSafe connector, and the SD Card.

    Instead, a reversible USB Type-C port, headphone jack and dual-microphones would replace the ports.

    The upcoming Macbook Air with Retina Display is also expected to boast the newest Intel Broadwell chipset, which is even more powerful and power-efficient than Haswell.

    The new chip does not support fans anymore, resulting in an even thinner frame.

    In the report, the Apple Watch will be officially unveiled next week, though it will not be surprising if the Cupertino manufacturer will include the newest MacBook Air in the event.

    Christian Post Report – Apple’s supersized iPhone, the iPhone 6 Plus, has continued to dominate the market since it was released last year. The handset’s big screen has caused fans to do away with their tablets, and the phone’s great battery life is an added advantage.

    However, Samsung’s latest release, the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge, is out to challenge Apple’s best seller with its ingenious design and clear and bright screen, which, though not as large as the iPhone 6 Plus, is still pretty impressive due to its high resolution.

    Here, we compare the two handsets.

    Design:
    The iPhone 6 Plus has a matte, aluminum metal body. The phone has a rounded shape, with the glass blending into the rounded edges. The phone measures 6.22 x 3.06 x 0.47 inches and weighs 6.07 ounces. The handset is available in gold, silver, and space grey.

    The Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge has a metal body, and the edges of the screen curve out and down. It measures 5.6 x 2.8 x 0.28 inches and weighs 4.06 ounces. The phone is available in White Pearl, Black Sapphire, Gold Platinum, and Green Emerald.

    Features:
    The Galaxy S6 Edge has the advantage when it comes to screen resolution, but the iPhone 6 has the bigger display. The iPhone 6 has a Retina HD 5.5-inch display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 and pixel density count of 401ppi. The S6 Edge has a 5.1-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 and pixel density of 576ppi. Also, the curved sides offer quick access to contacts and notifications, and when the phone gets an incoming call, one side of the screen lights up in a specific color assigned to a contact.

    The iPhone 6 Plus comes in 16GB, 64GB and 128GB internal memory options, while the Galaxy S6 Edge comes in 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB models. Both phones do not come with a microSD card slot.

    The S6 Edge has a 64-bit octa core ship and runs on Android 5.0 Lollipop with TouchWiz interface on top, while the iPhone 6 Plus has a 1.38GHz Apple A8 chip set and runs on iOS 8.

    The iPhone 6 Plus has an 8MP iSight camera, and the S6 Edge has a 16MP rear camera and 5MP front facing shooter.

    Price:
    Off contract, the iPhone 6 Plus costs $949, while pricing for the Galaxy S6 Edge has yet to be announced.

    Christian Post Report – I fear there are a lot of sermon connoisseurs running around today. You’ve probably heard them on occasion. They like to compare preachers: “Well, I like this preacher. He’s good in this area, but he’s weak in this other area. Now this other guy. . . .”

    But this isn’t the Battle of the Bands; this is the Word of God. We need to take what God says and then apply it to our lives. If we do, we’ll be able to withstand the temptations and the tests of life. And if we don’t, then we’ll collapse like a house of cards.

    Jesus said, “Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock” (Matthew 7:24–25).

    We can attend Bible studies all week long, but they won’t do us any good if we don’t apply what we’ve learned. The Bible tells us that we are not just to be hearers of the Word, but doers. And if we are hearers only, then we are like people who look at themselves in the mirror and then forget what they look like (see James 1:22–24).

    What you choose to do with God’s Word is up to you. Either you are going to apply it, or you are not going to apply it. Either you will decide to fill your mind with junk, or you will decide to guard your mind and fill it with the Word of God and make right decisions for right living.

    Pray that God will give you the power to live the life He has called you to live.

    Christian Post Report – As I studied today’s verses from John’s Gospel, I felt convicted about falling short of Jesus’ expectations. It’s easy to say, “Lord, I adore You,” but there have been times when I’ve used those words while resisting something He was trying to impress upon my heart. The old adage is true: Actions speak louder than words.

    The measure of our love is obedience to the Lord’s commands and principles. Following His instructions is so important that Jesus stressed the point three times in today’s passage (vv. 15, 21, 23). This wasn’t a new concept for the disciples, either. They would have been familiar with the scriptural connection between love and obedience (Neh. 1:5; Dan. 9:4). In fact, God has always emphasized that the way to show our devotion is by doing what He says. (See Deut. 8:11; 10:12; 13:3-4.)

    Scripture tells us that love for God is linked to obedience. The Lord told Joshua to meditate on Scripture day and night (Josh. 1:8). I read from the Bible every day so I can know how to obey, because that is the only way to stay faithful and show the Father my love.

    ISIS has destroyed the ancient city of Nimrud in Iraq, with video published March 6, 2015.

    Christian Post Report – Terror group ISIS has been bulldozing and destroying the ancient biblical city of Nimrud, Iraqi officials have said. The U.N. and the international community at large have condemned the “war crime,” which Iraq has said is aimed at erasing the country’s history.

    BBC News reported that on Thursday ISIS began the destruction of the ancient Assyrian site, founded in the 13th Century BC.

    “In a new crime in their series of reckless offenses they assaulted the ancient city of Nimrud and bulldozed it with heavy machinery, appropriating archaeological attractions dating back 13 centuries BC,” the United Nations cultural agency UNESCO said.

    UNESCO head Irina Bokova added: “This is yet another attack against the Iraqi people, reminding us that nothing is safe from the cultural cleansing under way in the country: it targets human lives, minorities, and is marked by the systematic destruction of humanity’s ancient heritage,” she said.

    The government of Iraq argued that ISIS militants are defying “the will of the world and the feelings of humanity” by destroying the famous archeological site.

    “Islamic State members came to the Nimrud archaeological city and looted the valuables in it and then they proceeded to level the site to the ground,” a Mosul tribal source told Reuters. “There used to be statues and walls as well as a castle that Islamic State has destroyed completely.”

    A number of other cities and empires mentioned in the Old Testament of the Bible are located in what is now northern Iraq.

    Nimrud, which lies 18 miles south-east of the ISIS stronghold of Mosul, was the second capital of the ancient kingdom of Assyria. It was destroyed in 612 B.C., and rediscovered in the 19th century in a major archaeological find.

    ISIS, which is seeking to establish an Islamic caliphate in Iraq, Syria, and the surrounding region, has called the artifacts in Nimrud “false idols” that need to be destroyed.

    Iraqi archaeologist Lamia al-Gailani told BBC: “Nimrud for us in Iraq and for me as an archaeologist is one of the most important [sites]. There are still quite a lot of things that are standing — the reliefs and the statues, the famous winged bulls.”

    He added: “They are erasing our history. I wish it was a nightmare and I could wake up.”

    John Curtis, the president of the British Institute for the Study of Iraq, also called Nimrud “the best preserved Assyrian site in Iraq” and said that ISIS’ attack is a “horrific crime against the cultural heritage of the whole world.”

    ISIS has targeted archeological treasures before, and last week it released a video showing militants destroying with sledgehammers historic artifacts in a museum in Mosul.

    Suzanne Bott, the heritage conservation project director for Iraq and Afghanistan in the University of Arizona’s College of Architecture, Planning and Archaeology, said that she worked at Nimrud between 2008 and 2010, Fox News reported. She explained that the ancient city practiced medicine, astrology, agriculture, trade and commerce, and had some of the earliest writings.

    “It’s really called the cradle of Western civilization, that’s why this particular loss is so devastating,” Bott said. “What was left on site was stunning in the information it was able to convey about ancient life.

    “People have compared it to King Tut’s tomb,” she added.
