Texas Church Offers Grocery Relief During Pandemic

LONGVIEW, Texas (BP) — More than 100 at-risk families in Longview, Texas, have had one less thing to worry about in the last few days — how to acquire groceries during the COVID-19 pandemic. New Beginnings Baptist Church plans to ramp up its Grocery Relief Program to help 200 families each week throughout the crisis.

“There are kids and families who are being directly impacted by the coronavirus in ways that we cannot even imagine,” George Willis, pastor of missions and pastoral care said.

Facebook: “We see in the Gospels that Jesus runs to those who are sick. He meets the needs of those who are hurting. As Christians we do not run from the sick, we run toward them. And in times of crisis, we do not hoard our possessions, but we share them.

As he has helped get the program going, Willis has seen single parents, elderly people and widows trying to make adjustments to a new living situation without leaving their homes.

“When you donate groceries or come help volunteer to assemble and distribute groceries, the food goes to people who truly need the help,” he said.

New Beginnings is partnering with three local school districts to deliver food to 128 children enrolled in the schools’ Backpack Program while schools are closed. The program serves children who are at risk of going hungry on weekends and during the holidays. School staff identifies children who show signs of hunger and malnutrition and discreetly distribute a backpack of food for them to take home.

Univision and Los Angeles Archdiocese Partner to Offer Mass on Local TV Channel

Univision and Los Angeles Archdiocese Partner to Offer Mass on Local TV Channel

LOS ANGELES (RNS) — Parishioners from the largest Catholic archdiocese in the country can now access Spanish-language Mass on local TV in the wake of the novel coronavirus that has led to the cancellation of the public services.

Through a partnership between Univision television network in Los Angeles and the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, the Spanish-language morning Masses from the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels are now being broadcast through the network’s local UniMás KFTR-TV on Channel 46. The morning Mass services are offered at 7 a.m. Monday through Friday and on Sunday.

Carolina Guevara, a spokeswoman for the archdiocese, said this service helps fill a void for the large number of parishioners who are Spanish-speaking, as well as for those who may not have social media access. Guevara said more than 70% of the archdiocese’s parishioners are Latino.

The archdiocese spans the counties of Los Angeles, Ventura and Santa Barbara.

Guevara said this service does not cost the archdiocese any money and will go on “as long as this crisis continues.”

Luis Patiño, president and general manager of Univision Los Angeles, said “this is purely a service to our community.”

“These are unprecedented times and we believe it is our social responsibility to help provide Mass for the thousands of faithful who cannot leave their homes,” Patiño said.

Patiño said Univision…

How to Stay the Coronavirus Plague #4 with Daniel Whyte III

Welcome to the How to Stay the Coronavirus Plague podcast #4. My name is Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society International.

Deuteronomy 28:59 says “Then the LORD will make thy plagues wonderful, and the plagues of thy seed, even great plagues, and of long continuance, and sore sicknesses, and of long continuance.”

Matthew Henry says, “God justly expects from us that we should fear his fearful name; and, which is strange, that name which is here proposed as the object of our fear is, THE LORD THY GOD, which is very fitly here put in our Bibles in capital letters; for nothing can sound more truly august. As nothing is more comfortable, so nothing more awful, than this, that he with whom we have to do is Jehovah, a being infinitely perfect and blessed, and the author of all being; and that he is our God, our rightful Lord and owner, from whom we are to receive laws and to whom we are to give account: this is great, and greatly to be feared. We may justly expect from God that, if we do not fear his fearful name, we shall feel his fearful plagues; for one way or other God will be feared. All God’s plagues are dreadful, but some are wonderful, carrying in them extraordinary signatures of divine power and justice, so that a man, upon the first view of them, may say, Verily, there is a God that judgeth in the earth.”

Leonard Ravenhill said, “If we displease God, does it matter whom we please? If we please Him does it matter whom we displease?”

Here are some news stories about the coronavirus:

According to the Fox8 North Carolina has its first two coronavirus deaths, according to state health officials.

According to Fox News Spain surged past China to now have the world’s second-highest tally of coronavirus deaths after seeing a 738 spike overnight — its highest so far in one day.

According to WTVA The state of Mississippi reported its second death from the coronavirus, the Mississippi State Department of Health (MSDH) confirmed Wednesday morning.

I believe that one of the things that God is allowing to happen through this plague is to bring families back together because families are the biggest problem in our society and if you have broken families you have broken churches and a broken community but for many families being cooped up in the house together is going to be rough because many husbands and wives, fathers and mothers are selfish and really don’t want to be in the house all the time with the family and depending on the age of the children they may not want to be either and this can lead to an explosive situation that can potentially be deadly and by the grace of God i will share with you some things as I have done this and we have done family life, ministry life, and business life in the home together.

Deuteronomy 11:19 says “And ye shall teach them your children, speaking of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.”

James Emery White said, “Homeschooling fosters family intimacy. When the family is together, it’s together. Homeschooling keeps the family together; the older children with the younger children—full interaction. For one year, we put our oldest daughter, Rebecca, into a private Christian school for first grade. She would come home tired, irritable, impatient with her younger siblings. The intimacy she had with us – that we all had together – was radically different than what we had experienced before. We went back to homeschooling after that, and the difference was immediate and palpable. Intimacy returned in ways that we were accustomed to.”

——

Now, if you are with us today and you do not know Jesus Christ as your Savior, allow me to show you how you can place your faith and trust in Him for Salvation from sin and Hell.

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 18:8: “Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.
Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the Cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour! For more information to help you grow in your newfound faith in Christ, go to Gospel Light Society.com and read “What To Do After You Enter Through the Door”. Jesus Christ said in John 10:9, “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.”

If you accepted Jesus Christ as your Savior today, please email me at [email protected] and let us know. There is some free material that we want to send you. If you have a prayer request, please e-mail that to us as well, and we will pray for you until you tell us to stop.

God loves you. We love you. And may God bless you.

Companies Offer Employment Opportunities as Unemployment Skyrockets amid COVID-19 Pandemic

Companies Offer Employment Opportunities as Unemployment Skyrockets amid COVID-19 Pandemic

With more than 37 million Americans at risk of losing their jobs amid the coronavirus pandemic, companies across the U.S. are stepping up and offering employment opportunities.

According to Hot Air, the importance of essential business is stressed even now amidst stay at home orders across the country.

Here are nine companies offering employment opportunities:

CVS

CVS is seeking to hire around 50,000 new employees. As employees will begin working during the global pandemic, the pharmaceutical franchise is offering $500 bonuses for onsite workers.

Full-time, part-time and temporary jobs are available with CVS “including store positions, home delivery drivers, distribution workers and customer service representatives.”

Dollar General

Dollar General stores are looking to welcome 50,000 additional employees across 45 states at around 16,300 locations by the end of April.

Domino’s

Domino’s plans on hiring “10,000 employees to work as pizza makers, delivery personnel and customer service representatives.”

Additionally, the company is looking for people to “fill roles at its supply chain centers” as well as people to fill management and assistant management positions.

The Chicago metro area, in particular, seeks to employ “1,000 new employees to work at more than 100 stores.”

“The opportunity to keep feeding our neighbors through delivery and carryout means…

‘Top Chef Masters’ winner dies at 59 from coronavirus: What to do when you cannot see God’s hand

Floyd Cardoz won Season 3 of Top Chef Masters. He donated his $100,000 winnings to the Young Scientist Cancer Research Fund at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in memory of his father.

Cardoz
began his career as a salad cook. Within three years, he became the sous-chef,
then chef de cuisine. He made a name for himself running the Indian fusion restaurant
Table in Manhattan. After testing positive for COVID-19 on March 18, he was
being treated at a New Jersey hospital. He died Wednesday at the age of
fifty-nine.

A colleague said of him, “I feel so terrible for his family and his two sons. All the cooks and managers that worked under him. Easily one of the most beloved people in the business.” He added, “As great a chef as Floyd was, he was a better person and amazing dad.”

What to do when you cannot see God’s hand

Chef
Cardoz’s passing reminds us that the numbers being reported daily are people,
each of whom God loves unconditionally (Romans 5:8).

The
good news is that we have a Shepherd who not only loves his sheep but who feels
what we feel and hurts as we hurt. After calling himself the “good
shepherd” who “lays down his life for the sheep” (John 10:11),
Jesus said of those who trust in him: “I give them eternal life, and they
will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand” (v. 28).

If an
object is in your hand, I cannot touch it without first touching you. Nothing
can come to you that does not first come to your Savior.

In
addition, Jesus’ statement that “no one will snatch them out of my
hand” applies to us. We are not holding onto Jesus—he is holding onto us.

Scripture
teaches that “if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has
passed away; behold, the new has come” (2 Corinthians 5:17). Once we are
“born again” as the children of God (John 3:3), we will always be the
children of God. My sons will always be my sons. They may not want to be my
sons or…

‘Faith Matters’ during Health Crises but Religious Sentiments May Lead to Blaming Others, Scholar Cautions

‘Faith Matters’ during Health Crises but Religious Sentiments May Lead to Blaming Others, Scholar Cautions

When illness threatens, “faith matters” because it can help strengthen our resistance to infection and disease, says Baylor University epidemiologist Jeff Levin. During this COVID-19 pandemic, Levin said, it’s important “to maintain continuity in our spiritual life.”

Despite this positive aspect of religious practice, Levin also cautions that the challenge of a widespread health crisis can also result in blaming and “scapegoating.”

Levin’s comments, reported in a Baylor news release, are from a Q&A with him about the COVID-19 outbreak and its religious dimensions. Levin holds a doctorate in Preventive Medicine and Community Health from the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston.

At Baylor, based in Waco, Texas, Levin is director of the Program on Religion and Population Health in the university’s Institute for Studies of Religion. He is also an adjunct professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Duke University School of Medicine.

Levin’s website, Religion and Health, describes him as a religious scholar and biomedical scientist who “in the 1980s pioneered the study of religion and health.”

When asked “What can we do to strengthen our resistance to the infection and the disease?” Levin replied, “One of the important things that we can do – and decades of…

PODCAST: The Master Plan of Evangelism, Part 28 (Soul-Winning Motivator #163) with Daniel Whyte III

Soul-Winning Motivator Podcast #163

Welcome to the Soul-Winning Motivator Podcast #163.

This is Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society International. As always, it is so good to be with you today to challenge you, encourage you, exhort you, and motivate you to witness for the Lord Jesus Christ right where you are to those who are not believers in Christ. Even though we will share some instructions on how to witness for the Lord from time to time, we believe that most Christians do not need to learn how to witness for the Lord, they just need to go and do it; so our aim is more motivational than instructional.

Our soul-winning Passage from the Word of God today is 1 Corinthians 9:22 which reads: “To the weak became I as weak, that I might gain the weak: I am made all things to all men, that I might by all means save some.”

Allow me to share with you some insights regarding this Scripture from the Expository Notes of Dr. Thomas Constable:

The “weak” are those who have extremely sensitive consciences in the area of non-moral practices, such as the Jews. Here the apostle meant unbelievers, as is clear from what he said about them. Paul accommodated himself to their scruples. This policy undoubtedly led some people to conclude that Paul was inconsistent. His superficial inconsistency really manifested a more fundamental consistency. He did everything non-moral (“I have become all things to all men”) with a view to bringing people to the Savior (“that I may by all means save some”).

“By this phrase Paul means exactly the opposite of what it means in common speech to-day [sic]. He does not signify any weak compliance with the wrong actions and immoral practices of others. He is not approving the maxim: ‘When in Rome do as the Romans do.’ Paul is referring to matters of moral indifference, to weak prejudices, and to foolish scruples.”

Our soul winning quote today is from Jim Elliot. He said: “Rest in this – it is His business to lead, command, impel, send, call or whatever you want to call it. It is your business to obey, follow, move, respond, or what have you.”

Our soul winning devotional is part 28 of our series titled “The Master Plan of Evangelism” from Robert E. Coleman.

Consecration – The Principle in Focus

From the standpoint of strategy, however, it was the only way that Jesus could mold their lives by His word. There could be no development of character or purpose in the disciples without it. A father must teach his children to obey him if he expects his children to be like him.

It must be remembered, too, that Jesus was making men to lead His church to conquest, and no one can ever be a leader until first he has learned to follow a leader. So He brought up His future commanders from the ranks, drilling in them along the way the necessity for discipline and respect for authority. There could be no insubordination in His command. No one knew better than Jesus that the satanic forces of darkness against them were well organized and equipped to make ineffectual any half-hearted effort of evangelism. They could not possibly outwit the devilish powers of this world unless they gave strict adherence to Him who alone knew the strategy of victory. This required absolute obedience to the Master’s will, even as it meant complete abandonment of their own.

The Principle Applied Today
We must learn this lesson again today. There can be no dillydallying around with the commands of Christ. We are engaged in warfare, the issues of which are life and death, and every day that we are indifferent to our responsibilities is a day lost to the cause of Christ. If we have learned even the most elemental truth of discipleship, we must know that we are called to be servants of our Lord and to obey His Word. It is not our duty to reason why He speaks as He does, but only to carry out His orders. Unless there is this dedication to all that we know He wants us to do now, however immature our understanding may be, it is doubtful if we will ever progress further in his life and mission. There is no place in the Kingdom for a slacker, for such an attitude not only precludes any growth in grace and knowledge but also destroys any usefulness on the world battlefield of evangelism.

One must ask, why are so many professed Christians today stunted in their growth and ineffectual in their witness? Or to put the question in its larger context, why is the contemporary church so frustrated in its witness to the world? Is it not because among the clergy and laity alike there is a general indifference to the commands of God, or at least, a kind of contented complacency with mediocrity? Where is the obedience of the cross? Indeed, it would appear that the teachings of Christ regarding self-denial and dedication have been replaced by a sort of respectable “do as you please” philosophy of expediency.

The great tragedy is that little is being done to correct the situation, even by those who realize what is happening. Certainly the need of the hour is not for despair, but for action. It is high time that the requirements for membership in the church be interpreted and enforced in terms of true Christian discipleship. But this action alone will not be enough. Followers must have leaders, and this means that before much can be done with the church membership something will have to be done with the church officials. If this task seems to be too great, then we will have to start like Jesus did by getting with a few chosen ones and instilling into them the meaning of obedience.

It is when this principle is accepted in practice that we can develop fully according to the next step in the Master’s strategy of conquest.

In our next episode, we will look at Chapter 4, Impartation – He Gave Himself Away.

* * * * * * * * Let’s Pray * * * * * * * *

Dear friend, if you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ as your Savior, may I encourage you to get to know Him today.

Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now this is bad news, but here’s the good news.

Romans 10:9-13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Until next time,

Keep the soul winner’s fire!

'He's Going to Take Care of Me': Francis Chan Encourages Christians to Show Love, Joy, Peace During Coronavirus Outbreak

As concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic continue, evangelist Francis Chan is reminding believers that there’s still hope.

In a YouTube video posted last week, Chan explained that we must not forget to be people who show love and concern for others.

“During this time, it’s so easy for us to lose what we are suppose to be all about which is to be people who are loving and concerned that hundreds of people every day are dieing and many are headed to an eternity apart from Christ,” he said.

Chan encouraged Christians not to lose sight of the love, joy and peace that is still among us.

“My prayer for you guys is don’t lose your love. During this time really think, ‘God I love You and what do You want me to do out of love for You?’ Look at the others around you in love and how you can serve these people,” he said. “This is one of the greatest opportunities as a church where people are open to talking about serious things…life and death things.”

GET YOUR FREE FACTSHEET: Coronavirus: What You Need to Know

Chan also emphasized that we cannot lose our joy and to rejoice that our Father is still with us.

“The Bible commands us to rejoice in the Lord always. I know it’s a weird time when you can’t gather together as a big church and we can find some disappointment but don’t stop rejoicing of that fact that right now you can be alone and in the presence of the Almighty God,” he said.

Chan said believers should have peace throughout this unique experience and remember there’s nothing to fear.

“We are people that are suppose to be fearless, but what do I have to fear? I don’t have to fear death and this is the way that Christ wants me to live. I know Him and I don’t fear death,” he noted. “He’s going to take care of me while I’m on this earth and when it’s my time to go…it’s my time to go.”

Chan urged believers to have an attitude of a grace and thank God for allowing us to be with Him during this time.

“This is a time where we thank God and say, ‘God, it is so good that I am with You and nothing can separate me from Your love. Despite being on lockdown, we can get closer to the church and God. By yourself, no matter where you are – you can thrive in your walk with God,” the evangelist said.

“I believe it’s God’s grace on us. This is the fruit of the Spirit. Take advantage of this time. This is one of our greatest opportunities for reaching out to a lost world and showing them that we haven’t lost our love, joy and peace – even at this moment. The enemy can’t take that away from us. We love the Lord Jesus Christ and His church is alive and well,” Chan concluded.
