Catholic Cardinal Burke Says Faithful Should Attend Mass Despite Coronavirus

Catholic Cardinal Burke Says Faithful Should Attend Mass Despite Coronavirus

VATICAN CITY (RNS) — In an online statement, conservative Catholic Cardinal Raymond Burke said that access to Mass and the sacraments must not be denied even as the world faces the coronavirus pandemic.

“In considering what is needed to live, we must not forget that our first consideration is our relationship with God,” Burke wrote in a letter published on his website Saturday (March 21).

“That is why it is essential for us, at all times and above all in times of crisis, to have access to our churches and chapels, to the Sacraments, and to public devotions and prayers.”

The U.S. cardinal has been a staunch critic of Pope Francis’ pontificate and was among the four cardinals who authored the “Dubia,” a document challenging the Holy Father about his cautious opening to allowing Communion for divorced and remarried couples in the 2016 apostolic exhortation “Amoris Laetitia.”

Burke resides in Italy, which has experienced the deadliest outbreak of the coronavirus, surpassing China. Almost 5,000 people have died in Italy and over 50,000 have been infected. On Saturday, 793 people died as a result of the virus, a trend that shows no signs of slowing, especially in the northern part of the country that was struck the hardest.

The Italian bishops conference initially banned all Masses and religious gatherings throughout the country in order to adhere to the safety…

Dow Surges 2,100 Points as Congress Nears Deal on Virus Aid

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks surged on Wall Street Tuesday, sending the Dow up more than 2,100 points, biggest-ever point gain, as Congress nears a deal to inject $2 trillion into the economy to mitigate damage from the coronavirus outbreak.

The Dow’s gain of 11.4% was its largest percentage increase since 1933. Treasury yields rose in an encouraging sign that demand for low-risk assets was easing. The market has seen other big rebounds recently, only for them to wash out immediately. Investors say they need to see the number of new infections peak before markets can find a bottom.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. AP’s earlier story is below:

The Dow Jones Industrial Average surged 10% Tuesday as Congress and the White House neared a deal to inject nearly $2 trillion of aid into the coronavirus-ravaged economy.

The huge gains on Wall Street followed a worldwide rally as a wave of buying interrupted what has been a brutal month of nearly nonstop selling. Despite the gains, investors were far from saying markets have hit bottom. Rallies nearly as big as this have punctuated the last few weeks, and none lasted more than a day.

Investors have been frustrated waiting for the U.S. government to do what it can to help the economy, which is increasingly shutting down by the day. But both Democrats and Republicans said Tuesday they’re close on a massive economic rescue package, which will include payments to U.S. households and aid for small businesses and the travel industry, among other things.

A vote in the Senate could come later Tuesday or Wednesday, and if approved, it would follow the latest round of extraordinary aid launched by the Federal Reserve on Monday.

“I don’t think there’s any more confidence in the fundamental outlook, but the fact that we’re making progress is good news,” said Katie Nixon, chief investment officer at Northern Trust Wealth Management. “It’s sort of like, keep the patient alive in the emergency room so you can provide some treatment options.”

The buying circled the world. South Korean stocks surged 8.6%, Germany’s market jumped 11% and Treasury yields rose in a sign that investors are feeling less fearful.

The market has seen rebounds like this before, only for them to wash out immediately. Since stocks began selling off on Feb. 20, the S&P 500 has had six days where it’s risen, and all but one of them were big gains of more than 4%. After them, stocks fell an average of 5% the next day.

“One of the things to be careful about is thinking this will be the panacea or that this fiscal response will be sufficient,” said Eric Freedman, chief investment officer at U.S. Bank Wealth Management.

Ultimately, investors say they need to see the number of new infections peak before markets can find a floor. The increasing spread is forcing companies to park airplanes, shut hotels and close restaurants to dine-in customers. Altogether, estimates suggest at least 10% of the U.S. economy is shutting down, according to Rob Sharpe, head of investments and group chief investment officer at T. Rowe Price.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1,933 points, or 10.4%, to 20,525. The S&P 500 was up 8.8%, and the Nasdaq was up 7.6%.

Economists are topping each other’s dire forecasts for how much the economy will shrink this spring due to the closures of businesses, and a growing number say a recession seems inevitable.

To support the economy while health experts work to corral the virus, the Federal Reserve on Monday pledged to buy as many Treasurys and mortgage-backed securities as it takes to keep lending markets working smoothly..

Investors are waiting for Congress and the White House to also do what they can. They debated through the weekend and Monday on a plan to send cash to households and help support the hard-hit travel industry, among other things. After negotiations dragged through the night, a Senate vote could come later Tuesday or on Wednesday.

That helped travel-related stocks surge to the market’s biggest gains. Norwegian Cruise Lines, MGM Resorts and American Airlines Group were all up at least 30%. All, though, remain 60% or more below where they were last month.

Other areas of the market that were hardest hit in recent weeks were also helping to lead the market higher, including energy companies and banks.

Governments and central banks in other countries around the world are unveiling unprecedented levels of support for their economies in an attempt to limit the scale of the upcoming virus-related slump. Germany, a bastion of budgetary discipline, also approved a big fiscal boost.

The gains came even as the first reports arrived showing how badly the outbreak is hitting the global economy. In the United States, a preliminary reading on business activity in March showed the steepest contraction on record, going back to 2009. Reports were also gloomy for Europe.

“Everyone was prepared for a set of shockers, and that is precisely what we got, but they are not a surprise,” said Chris Beauchamp, chief market analyst at IG. “It is at times like this that the market’s propensity to look forward is demonstrated most effectively.”

More dour data is nearly assuredly on the way. On Thursday, economists expect a report to show the number of Americans applying for jobless claims easily set a record last week. Some say the number could be way beyond 1 million, amid a wave of layoffs, toping the prior record of 695,000 set in 1982.

Helping to lift sentiment in markets is news from China that it is preparing to lift the lockdown in Wuhan, the epicenter of the outbreak, and from Italy reporting a reduction in the number of new cases and coronavirus-related deaths.

“It’s still early days, of course — perhaps investors can start to envisage life beyond the coronavirus,” said Craig Erlam, senior market analyst at OANDA Europe. “That could make stocks look a little more attractive, although anyone jumping back in now will need to have nerves of steel.”

For most people, the coronavirus causes only mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough. Those with mild illness recover in about two weeks. Severe illness including pneumonia can occur, especially in the elderly and people with existing health problems. Recovery could take six weeks in such cases.

Barna ‘Pivots’ to Offer Churches Free Crisis Management Resources

Barna ‘Pivots’ to Offer Churches Free Crisis Management Resources

When the coronavirus crisis escalated to a pandemic, “… Everything changed for everyone,” said Barna Group President David Kinnaman in a news release distributed Monday. The challenging disruptions associated with the global COVID-19 outbreak prompted the Barna Group to immediately adjust its plans to help support Christian leaders and their churches deal with the effects of the crisis.

The release announced Monday’s immediate launch of a free toolkit, the ChurchPulse Weekly, described as a “comprehensive offering” that “is part of Barna’s State of the Church 2020 research effort.” Barna, based in Ventura, Calif., specializes in research about faith and culture, leadership and vocation, and generations.

“We were already building these research tools before the coronavirus hit,” Kinnaman said in the release. “… We’ve pivoted to make these tools even more helpful to help church leaders navigate this major crisis in more effective ways.

“We’d already committed this year to help the church flourish and thrive in uncertain cultural times — we just couldn’t have anticipated the needs of the church amid COVID-19,” said Kinnaman. “We have access to resources that could benefit churches during social distancing, and so, nothing made more sense than to pivot our regularly scheduled plans for March and dive in on how we can encourage and help the church succeed through the…

34 Coronavirus Cases Linked to One Arkansas Church – ‘Take it Very Seriously,’ Pastor Pleads

34 Coronavirus Cases Linked to One Arkansas Church – ‘Take it Very Seriously,’ Pastor Pleads

At least 34 individuals who have connections to an Arkansas church have been diagnosed with COVID-19, and that number could climb higher as more testing is completed.

Donald Shipp, a deacon at First Assembly of God in Greers Ferry, Ark., told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette that all 34 attended a “Kids Crusade” event March 6-8. Among the infected are pastor Mark Palenske and his wife, Dena.

The event was held prior to the CDC’s guidance to limit mass gatherings.

“It clearly made its way through a special weekend of children’s ministry at our church,” Palenske wrote in a Facebook post.

COVID-19, he added, is “highly contagious.”

“The intensity of this virus has been underestimated by so many, and I continue to ask that each of you take it very seriously,” he wrote. An act of wisdom and restraint on your part can be the blessing that preserves the health of someone else.”

Vice President Mike Pence has said the coronavirus is three times as contagious as the flu. It’s also 10 times deadlier than the flu, according to Dr. Anthony Fauci of the Coronavirus Task Force.

Danyelle McNeill, an Arkansas Department of Health spokeswoman, said Monday there were “connections to travel” with the outbreak at the church.

Palenske said he and his wife had not traveled outside the state.

Gracie Campbell, a member of the church, said the outbreak was a…

Jerry Falwell, Jr. Under Fire for Allowing Students Back to Dorms

Jerry Falwell, Jr. Under Fire for Allowing Students Back to Dorms

The President of Liberty University, Jerry Falwell, Jr., is facing intense backlash after choosing to allow students back to their campus dorms amid the spiraling coronavirus pandemic.

“The University has decided to move most classes to a digital format and to allow students the choice to return to campus after Spring Break or stay home and complete their classes remotely,” reads a statement posted to the institution’s website.

Falwell’s decision – which comes after Virginia governor Ralph Northam placed a blanket ban on gatherings of more than 100 to try and stem the rate of infection – has invited criticism from members of Liberty’s own faculty.

“This decision runs contrary to the three other residential schools in our area that have closed their dorms, allowing only those with nowhere else to go to remain,” wrote Liberty English professor Marybeth Davis Baggett at Religion New Service, noting that university staff are “expected to hold office hours and welcome students for face-to-face interaction.”

“Jerry Falwell, Jr. is about to make a terrible mistake,” she added. “It’s time for the Liberty University board to stop him and shut the campus down before it’s too late.”
Baggett went on to lambast Falwell’s “foolhardy decision” to reject the official advice on social distancing, saying it “smacks of defiance.”

“His public comments on the pandemic have…

Harvard president tests positive for COVID-19: When you’re afraid that all we can do is not enough

The president of Harvard University and his wife just announced that they have tested positive for COVID-19. Their statement highlights the fact that no one is immune to this disease.

As I write this Daily Article Special Edition, congressional and White House officials say they expect to reach a deal today on a nearly $2 trillion measure aimed at easing the economic damage from the coronavirus epidemic.

Negotiators are laboring in the shadow of what Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell calls “the most serious threat to Americans’ health in over a century and quite likely the greatest risk to America’s jobs and prosperity that we’ve seen since the Great Depression.”

We are facing an unprecedented challenge, at least in my lifetime. We are looking, therefore, for unprecedented responses from medical experts and national leaders.

Our fear is that this bill, massive though it will be, will not be enough.

Will it sustain our economy until we can all go back to work? How long will that be? What will be the permanent consequences of this crisis? What will “normal” look like, assuming we return to it?

If you’re afraid that all our resources are not enough to meet the challenges of our day, I have some good news for you.

‘Open wide your mouth, and I will fill it’

In Psalm 81, the Lord says to his people, “I am the Lord your God, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt” (v. 10a). This sentence captures a miracle that transcends anything we can fully comprehend.

Egypt was the greatest empire the world had ever seen, its military feared the world over. For a fugitive shepherd and two million slaves to defy their pharaoh and defeat their army required a demonstration of omnipotence that changed human history.

Now, reminding his people of what he has done for them in the past, God encourages them to trust him for what he can do for them in the present: “Open your mouth wide, and I…

PODCAST: Whyte House Family Devotional Reading of Charles Spurgeon’s Morning and Evening #67 with Daniel Whyte III

This is Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society International with the Whyte House Family Devotional Reading of Charles Spurgeon’s Morning and Evening podcast. This is Episode #67.

Charles Spurgeon was a prominent English Particular Baptist preacher. He was very influential among the Christians of various denominations during his age and even today, and is commonly called the “Prince of Preachers”. After some time of alternately searching for God and running from God, he had a powerful encounter which led him to give his life to Christ. Spurgeon was only 16 when he preached his first sermon and he began publishing books shortly afterward. At the time of his death, he had preached nearly 3,600 sermons and published 49 volumes of commentaries, sayings, anecdotes, illustrations and devotions. Spurgeon said, “encouraging thoughts are like honey to the heart”, and wrote this devotional in hopes that its uplifting messages for each day of the year would bring comfort and refreshment to our walk with God. He was inspired by Isaiah 50:4 which reads, “He wakeneth morning by morning. He wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned” and Psalm 63:5-6 which says, “My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness; and my mouth shall praise thee with joyful lips; when I remember Thee upon my bed, and meditate on Thee in the night watches.”

Romans 8:12 reads: “Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.”

As God’s creatures, we are all debtors to him: to obey him with all our body, and soul, and strength. Having broken his commandments, as we all have, we are debtors to his justice, and we owe to him a vast amount which we are not able to pay. But of the Christian it can be said that he does not owe God’s justice anything, for Christ has paid the debt his people owed; for this reason the believer owes the more to love. I am a debtor to God’s grace and forgiving mercy; but I am no debtor to his justice, for he will never accuse me of a debt already paid. Christ said, “It is finished!” and by that he meant, that whatever his people owed was wiped away forever from the book of remembrance. Christ, to the uttermost, has satisfied divine justice; the account is settled; the handwriting is nailed to the cross; the receipt is given, and we are debtors to God’s justice no longer. But then, because we are not debtors to our Lord in that sense, we become ten times more debtors to God than we should have been otherwise. Christian, pause and ponder for a moment. What a debtor thou art to divine sovereignty! How much thou owest to his disinterested love, for he gave his own Son that he might die for thee. Consider how much you owe to his forgiving grace, that after ten thousand affronts he loves you as infinitely as ever. Consider what you owe to his power; how he has raised you from your death in sin; how he has preserved your spiritual life; how he has kept you from falling; and how, though a thousand enemies have beset your path, you have been able to hold on your way. Consider what you owe to his immutability. Though you have changed a thousand times, he has not changed once. Thou art as deep in debt as thou canst be to every attribute of God. To God thou owest thyself, and all thou hast—yield thyself as a living sacrifice, it is but thy reasonable service.

PRAY.

Thank you for listening to the Morning and Evening podcast. If you do not know the Lord as your Savior, here is how you can be saved from Hell and walk with the Lord morning and evening until you go to that wonderful place called Heaven when you die:

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 18:8: “Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the Cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour! For more information to help you grow in your newfound faith in Christ, go to Gospel Light Society.com and read “What To Do After You Enter Through the Door”. Jesus Christ said in John 10:9, “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.”

If you accepted Jesus Christ as your Savior today, please email me at [email protected] and let us know. There is some free material that we want to send you. If you have a prayer request, please e-mail that to us as well, and we will pray for you until you tell us to stop.

God loves you. We love you. And may God bless you.

Deal on Coronavirus Stimulus Package Imminent after Democrats Block Two Bills in 24 Hours

Deal on Coronavirus Stimulus Package Imminent after Democrats Block Two Bills in 24 Hours

The Senate may be close to a deal on an almost $2 trillion economic stimulus package. This comes one day after Senate Democrats blocked the package two days in a row.

Monday’s vote led to partisan bickering on the floor like few observers have seen in their lifetimes, CBN News reports. Democrats demanded that a long list of “Progressive wish-list” items be added to the bill and argued that the bill did not do enough for people at the bottom of the economy. They also objected to $500 billion set aside for corporate bailouts that they claim would be a “slush fund” for Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said the bill, “includes a large corporate bailout with no protections for workers and virtually no oversight.” He added that he was also troubled by “significant shortfalls of money that our hospitals, states, cities, and medical workers desperately needed.”

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said the “Democrats won’t let us fund hospitals or save small businesses unless they get to dust off the Green New Deal.” One Democratic demand was for new emissions standards for airlines, which led Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX), to thunder from the Senate floor, to question, “What the hell do the emissions standards on airplanes have to do with thousands of people dying and millions of people out of work in…

PODCAST: The Scripture & the Sense Podcast #453: Amos 5:7 with Daniel Whyte III

This is Daniel Whyte III president of Gospel Light Society International with The Scripture & the Sense Podcast #453, where I read the Word of God and give the sense of it based on an authoritative commentary source such as the Bible Knowledge Commentary or Matthew Henry Commentary. This podcast is based upon Nehemiah 8:8 where it says Ezra and the Levites “read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.” The aim of this podcast is that through the simple reading of the Word of God and the giving of the sense of it, the church would be revived and the world would be awakened.

Today we are reading Amos 5:7.

7 Ye who turn judgment to wormwood, and leave off righteousness in the earth,

________

That was Amos 5:7. Now here is the sense of it.

The Matthew Henry Commentary reads:

The same almighty power can, for repenting sinners, easily turn affliction and sorrow into prosperity and joy, and as easily turn the prosperity of daring sinners into utter darkness. Evil times will not bear plain dealing; that is, evil men will not. And these men were evil men indeed, when wise and good men thought it in vain even to speak to them. Those who will seek and love that which is good, may help to save the land from ruin. It behoves us to plead God’s spiritual promises, to beseech him to create in us a clean heart, and to renew a right spirit within us. The Lord is ever ready to be gracious to the souls that seek him; and then piety and every duty will be attended to. But as for sinful Israel, God’s judgments had often passed by them, now they shall pass through them.

The Bible Knowledge Commentary reads:

One reason for God’s judgment was the corruption that permeated the courts. Court officials had turned justice into bitterness and had cast righteousness to the ground.“Justice” was the proper functioning of judicial procedures that enabled a court to declare who or what was right in a given case. “Righteousness” was the behavior of one who sought this end, who did “right” to those involved in the case. A righteous man was willing to speak in defense of an innocent person who had been wrongly accused. Righteousness was the action; justice was the end result. To do what was “right” and “just” on behalf of the needy was a crowning gem of human behavior and proved a special relationship with God. Justice and righteousness were more than essential sacrifice and ceremony. And nowhere were righteousness and justice more crucial than in the courts. Here the weaker members of society, those without money or influence, could receive protection from their oppressors and find fairness under the Law. But Israel, through the alchemy of greed, had turned justice into “bitterness”—literally, “wormwood,” a small plant known for its bitter pulp, usually associated with poison. The judicial system, instead of being like a medicinal herb to heal wrongs and restore the oppressed, had itself become a fatal poison within the nation. The description of the poison’s spread is continued in 5:10–13.

____________

Thank you for listening to the Scripture & The Sense Podcast. Remember to read the Word of God each and every day and pray without ceasing to God for wisdom to understand it and apply it to your life. Most importantly, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved. Please stay tuned for a complete presentation of the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ so that you can get your soul saved from Hell to that wonderful place called Heaven when you die. May God bless you and keep you is my prayer.

Italian Priest Dies From Coronavirus After Giving Away His Respirator So Another May Live

An Italian priest infected with COVID-19 died after giving his respirator to a stranger.

Newsweek reports that Catholic priest Don Giusseppe Berardelli, who was hospitalized in Lovere, Italy, gave up his medical equipment to a younger patient in need.

The 72-year-old was an admired man who enjoyed serving his community, and was well-known for helping people experiencing financial hardship.

Fr. Giuseppe Berardelli, a 72-year-old priest who gave a respirator (that his parishioners had purchased for him), to a younger patient (whom he did not know), has died from #coronavirus.

Catholic News Agency reports that 60 priests have died in Italy during the month of March.

Bishop Gianni Ambrosio said, “I pray to the Holy Spirit to give us the gift of light and strength. Everyday I do the Via Crucis asking the Lord…to carry this cross with us.”

Most of the deceased were over the age of 70 and some of the priests were suffering from health problems. So far, the youngest priest to die from coronavirus in Italy was 53-year-old Fr. Paolo Camminati.

“It is a darkness that we must face, but with the hope that God never abandons us, that he himself has gone through all the suffering to overcome it,” Bishop Ambrosio said.
