Alex Murashko On Media Missionary Pioneer Dan Wooding Leaves Remarkable Legacy

Christian journalist Dan Wooding, who was the founder of ASSIST News Service and considered a pioneer in media missionary work, died Wednesday morning in the UK, his sons Peter and Andrew Wooding reported. He was 79.

Peter and Andrew stated in a Facebook post to friends that their father “peacefully passed away at 9 am UK time this morning.

“He has left a remarkable legacy to us as a family and to the Christian media community as a true journalistic/missions pioneer who founded Assist News Service. We’d value prayers for our mother Norma Wooding.”

Wooding was struggling over the last couple of years with poor health as the result of complications from Leukemia and the ensuing treatments. He often chronicled his struggles on his Facebook account.

https://donorbox.org/mercyprojects_danwooding-in-memory

Two decades ago, he invited me to lunch to meet for the first time and introduced me to a term that I had never heard of before — media missionary.

Wooding, who was also the host of Front Page Radio on K-WAVE, and author of From Tabloid to Truth was the quintessential media missionary.

He played a large part in sending me on a trajectory that’s led to some very exciting times. I had already missed him a lot after he and Norma moved to the UK a couple of years ago. I would see him often at different media events, Christian gatherings and conferences. Sometimes, we’d share a press box lunch together and I’d pin him down about his tabloid days in the UK, hanging out with British rock stars and the like.

He was an award-winning journalist who was born in Nigeria of British missionary parents, Alfred and Anne Wooding from Liverpool. He had been married to Norma for 57 years. They had lived in the US for 36 years and returned home to be close to their two sons, Andrew and Peter, and six grandchildren, according to ASSIST.

Michigan Governor Exempts Worship Services from Executive Order Banning Gatherings of 50 or More People

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer stated that worship services are exempted from her recent executive order prohibiting gatherings of 50 or more people due to coronavirus concerns.

In an interview with “Fox News Sunday” anchor John Roberts, Whitmer explained that while she greatly discourages such gatherings in light of the pandemic, she believed the government did not have the right to order churches to close.

“Well, you know, the separation of church and state and the Republican legislature asked me to clarify that,” explained Whitmer, a Democrat.

“That’s an area that we don’t have the ability to directly enforce and control. We are encouraging people, though, do not congregate.”

The governor warned those considering attending church at this time that “you yourself can be carrying it and you might not even know it.”

“That’d be the worst thing in the world is to go to church to worship and to sit next to someone and infect them and have them suffer life-threatening consequences because of this decision,” she continued.

Whitmer also explained that one of the big challenges to fighting the virus in her state was that “we need more test kits.”

New York’s Bowery Mission Adapts Homeless Ministry to Coronavirus Restrictions

New York’s Bowery Mission Adapts Homeless Ministry to Coronavirus Restrictions

NEW YORK (RNS) — Almost every day for the past two years, Aaron Johnson, 37, has come to the Bowery Mission to eat a hot meal and see friends.

The oldest Christian rescue mission in New York City, the Bowery provides food, beds, showers, clothing and free medical services to the estimated 70,000 New Yorkers who don’t have permanent shelter.

For Johnson, the mission has been a “safe haven and friendly atmosphere.”

Now, his one place of stability is suddenly unstable.

As restrictions have taken effect in New York City to halt the spread of COVID-19, the Bowery Mission has had to change its operations virtually overnight.

This week, the mission replaced its hot meal service in its dining hall with to-go meals at the door. The chapel, where clients usually come in to socialize and escape inclement weather, is closed. The shower and clothing program is postponed as staff figure out how to continue it under new CDC restrictions. And volunteers — the heartbeat of the mission — have been asked to stay home at all but two of the Bowery’s six campuses in the New York Metro area.

The mission is still housing people — with 200 overnight shelter beds at their Tribeca campus and a few long-term residential programs that together house 77 people.

But the staff has moved the overnight beds farther apart, and things are being sanitized and cleaned more frequently. At all overnight…

Neil Diamond remakes ‘Sweet Caroline’ for coronavirus pandemic: Finding new ways to be the church

@NeilDiamond on Twitter

Neil Diamond recorded “Sweet Caroline” in 1969. The song sold more than one million singles and has been digitally downloaded more than two million times. It was selected by the Library of Congress in 2019 for preservation in the National Recording Registry.

However, the song has never been as appropriate or encouraging as it is today. Diamond rerecorded the song from his home and released it on Twitter, changing the lyrics to say, “Hands . . . washing hands . . . reaching out . . . don’t touch me, I won’t touch you!”

Another celebrity in the news is basketball superstar Steph Curry, who is partnering with a major food provider to distribute millions of meals in and around Oakland. What makes their partnership especially unique is that the company will be employing idled basketball arena workers who need a paycheck.

“Drive-thru” confessions and a poet who will talk to anyone

As I have written often in recent weeks, the coronavirus pandemic is a crisis unprecedented in my lifetime. It therefore represents an unprecedented opportunity for God’s people to advance his kingdom in our broken world.

Let’s consider some ways our secular culture is serving others that Christians could adapt in these critical days.

A poet in Italy published his cellphone number on social media with the notice that anyone could call him who wanted to talk. “I am available every morning from nine until noon,” he said. More than a hundred calls have come in from all over the country.

People in China, Iran, and around the world are finding very creative ways to stay connected through digital means. Priests in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area heard “drive-thru” confessions over the weekend as parishioners spoke with them from their cars or while sitting under special tents at a safe distance.

How many people could we serve if we made ourselves available to them through our phones, email, texts, or…

PODCAST: The Ministry and Prayer, Part 3 (Prayer Motivator Devotional #772 with Daniel Whyte III)

Welcome to the Prayer Motivator Devotional Broadcast #772. This is Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society International. The simple purpose of this podcast is to encourage you, exhort you, and motivate you to Just Pray. This podcast is not necessarily for people who already know the secret and power of prayer and who actually practice genuine prayer on a regular basis, rather it is for those who may find it difficult to pray or for people who claim they do not have time to pray. I am convinced that most Christian people do not need to learn how to pray; they need to Just Pray! If I can get you to just pray, all sorts of wonderful things will begin to happen for you, your family, and whatever God has called you to do. We do not pray based upon our subjective feelings, we pray based upon objective facts in the Word of God.

Our prayer motivator passage from the Word of God today is Matthew 6:13 which reads: “And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.”

Allow me to share with you some more important points regarding this passage from Matthew Henry’s Commentary:

2. It is a form of praise and thanksgiving. The best pleading with God is praising of him; it is the way to obtain further mercy, as it qualifies us to receive it. In all our addresses to God, it is fit that praise should have a considerable share, for praise becometh the saints; they are to be our God for a name and for a praise. It is just and equal; we praise God, and give him glory, not because he needs it—he is praised by a world of angels, but because he deserves it; and it is our duty to give him glory, in compliance with his design in revealing himself to us. Praise is the work and happiness of heaven; and all that would go to heaven hereafter, must begin their heaven now. Observe, how full this doxology is, The kingdom, and the power, and the glory, it is all thine. Note, It becomes us to be copious in praising God. A true saint never thinks he can speak honourably enough of God: here there should be a gracious fluency, and this for ever. Ascribing glory to God for ever, intimates an acknowledgement, that it is eternally due, and an earnest desire to be eternally doing it, with angels and saints above, Ps. 71:14 .

Our featured prayer motivator quote is from Billy Graham. He said, “I believe that the greatest form of prayer is praise to God.”

My personal encouragement for you today is this: The best and only pattern to follow when you pray is the one that our Lord gave to us which is commonly called “The Lord’s Prayer,” which is found in Matthew 6: 9-13. Now you do not have to pray this same prayer, but you can use it as a guide in your own prayer life. According to Jesus’ pattern of prayer, you should: (1) Praise God first; (2) Put His will before yours; (3) Ask for your daily provisions; (4) Ask for forgiveness of sin; (5) Ask God to keep you from evil; and (6) Give God the glory. Lay everything on your heart and mind before God and enjoy His peace.

Our prayer motivator devotional today is titled “THE MINISTRY AND PRAYER” part 3 from the book, “The Weapon of Prayer” by E.M. Bounds.

E.M. Bounds goes on to say:

The highest welfare of the Church of God on earth depends largely upon the ministry, and so Almighty God has always been jealous of His watchmen—His preachers. His concern has been for the character of the men who minister at His altars in holy things. They must be men who lean upon Him, who look to Him, and who continually seek Him for wisdom, help and power effectively to do the work of the ministry. And so He has designed men of prayer for the holy office, and has relied upon them successively to perform the tasks He has assigned them.

God’s great works are to be done as Christ did them; are to be done, indeed, with increased power received from the ascended and exalted Christ. These works are to be done by prayer. Men must do God’s work in God’s way, and to God’s glory, and prayer is a necessity to its successful accomplishment.

The thing far above all other things in the equipment of the preacher is prayer. Before everything else, he must be a man who makes a specialty of prayer. A prayerless preacher is a misnomer. He has either missed his calling, or has grievously failed God who called him into the ministry. God wants men who are not ignoramuses, who “study to show themselves approved.” Preaching the Word is essential; social qualities are not to be underestimated, and education is good; but under and above all else, prayer must be the main plank in the platform of the man who goes forth to preach the unsearchable riches of Christ to a lost and hungry world. The one weak spot in our Church institutions lies just here. Prayer is not regarded as being the primary factor in church life and activity, and other things, good in their places, are made primary. First things need to be put first, and the first thing in the equipment of a minister is prayer.

Now, friend, it is time for us to pray…

Remember, the announcer will provide the information for you to send in your prayer request at the end of this broadcast.

Please join me in prayer……..

We pray collectively and individually for the following:
> 3 million people to come to know you as Saviour
> the revival of the church
> the healing of families
> the healing of this nation
> blessings and guidance for all pastors, church leaders, and missionaries
> Salvation, leadership, and wisdom for the president and for all governmental officials who run this country and all other countries.

Now, Lord, we pray for three people who have sent in prayer requests:

Name: Steven
Please bring his wife back safely from Europe, guide them in their marriage and protect them from the Coronavirus

Name: Ravi
Please remove the Coronavirus from the world and provide him with soaps, tissues, sanitizer, masks and food to give to the poor children

Name: Jensen
Please deliver him from all psychological problems, satanic evil spirits and their works, and from all curses; remove all evil bondages from his head and deliver him from fear, anxiety, and depression, anoint him with the Holy Spirit’s fire and bless him abundantly

—-

Holy Father God, we pray for the following people who have accepted you into their hearts. We pray, Lord, that you would confirm them in the faith and have them grow in the faith to become the Holy Spirit-filled Christians that you want them to be. We pray specifically for —-

Gomba Amasi
Ifeanyi
Mary
Sibia

Now, Lord we pray for the following people who have been saved for a while but who have recommitted their lives to You. We rejoice with them in this decision and pray that they will keep their commitments to you and be strengthened in the faith. We pray specifically for —-

Lineo
Dorcas
Alimi

***

Now, if you are listening today, and you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour, allow me to show you how.

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now this is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9-13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Until next time,

Remember, friend, Pray, Think, Do! God Bless You!

New Symbolic System of Writing Brings Bible to Deaf and Blind Users Worldwide

A new concept is placing the Holy Bible into the hands of the deaf and blind around the world.

Wycliffe Associates introduced Symbolic Universal Notation (SUN) New Testament, a program that brings the scriptures to life for the deaf and blind through a symbolic system of writing.

Regardless of location, SUN users can begin learning from this concept-based language in less than a week.

Lori Jenkins, SUN program director for Wycliffe Associates said that SUN was created while a volunteer was searching for Braille Bibles.

“SUN was created by Wycliffe Associates after Emely Wang, then a volunteer with the Wycliffe Associates Print On Demand program, began researching how to print Braille Bibles,” Jenkins said. “Wang learned that an estimated 600,000 people in the world are both deaf and blind.”

“The question became, ‘Do these 600,000 have a Bible of their own, and is there a way we can do that for them?’ How do we provide a Bible for not only those who are deaf and blind, but for those who do not know the national sign language?”

The concept was created from symbols that represent the Mandarin language – which Wang used to develop general symbols that could be easily identified and understood.

Users of the SUN New Testament begin by learning 100 core symbols – then they discover how the symbols are blended to have meaning.

“When you think about the deaf and blind, they’re very limited in the ways they communicate,” Jenkins said. “So, for them, this actually opens up a whole new world of being able to communicate with their family and with other people around them. It’s quickly becoming the preferred language of many of the deaf and blind people that we work with.”

Presently, Wycliffe Associates’ SUN New Testament is the only known venture to provide Scripture to the deaf who aren’t using sign language and for both the deaf and blind.

“SUN is a miracle of God. It has more possibilities and more ways it can impact the world than we can imagine,” Jenkins said. “We have no idea where it’s going to lead. It’s opening doors and changing lives.”

PODCAST: The Scripture & the Sense Podcast #452: Amos 5:6 with Daniel Whyte III

This is Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society International with the Whyte House Family Devotional Reading of Charles Spurgeon’s Morning and Evening podcast. This is Episode #66.

Charles Spurgeon was a prominent English Particular Baptist preacher. He was very influential among the Christians of various denominations during his age and even today, and is commonly called the “Prince of Preachers”. After some time of alternately searching for God and running from God, he had a powerful encounter which led him to give his life to Christ. Spurgeon was only 16 when he preached his first sermon and he began publishing books shortly afterward. At the time of his death, he had preached nearly 3,600 sermons and published 49 volumes of commentaries, sayings, anecdotes, illustrations and devotions. Spurgeon said, “encouraging thoughts are like honey to the heart”, and wrote this devotional in hopes that its uplifting messages for each day of the year would bring comfort and refreshment to our walk with God. He was inspired by Isaiah 50:4 which reads, “He wakeneth morning by morning. He wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned” and Psalm 63:5-6 which says, “My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness; and my mouth shall praise thee with joyful lips; when I remember Thee upon my bed, and meditate on Thee in the night watches.”

1 Chronicles 4:22 reads: “And Jokim, and the men of Chozeba, and Joash, and Saraph, who had the dominion in Moab, and Jashubi-lehem. And these are ancient things.”

Yet not so ancient as those precious things which are the delight of our souls. Let us for a moment recount them, telling them over as misers count their gold. The sovereign choice of the Father, by which he elected us unto eternal life, or ever the earth was, is a matter of vast antiquity, since no date can be conceived for it by the mind of man. We were chosen from before the foundations of the world. Everlasting love went with the choice, for it was not a bare act of divine will by which we were set apart, but the divine affections were concerned. The Father loved us in and from the beginning. Here is a theme for daily contemplation. The eternal purpose to redeem us from our foreseen ruin, to cleanse and sanctify us, and at last to glorify us, was of infinite antiquity, and runs side by side with immutable love and absolute sovereignty. The covenant is always described as being everlasting, and Jesus, the second party in it, had his goings forth of old; he struck hands in sacred suretyship long ere the first of the stars began to shine, and it was in him that the elect were ordained unto eternal life. Thus in the divine purpose a most blessed covenant union was established between the Son of God and his elect people, which will remain as the foundation of their safety when time shall be no more. Is it not well to be conversant with these ancient things? Is it not shameful that they should be so much neglected and even rejected by the bulk of professors? If they knew more of their own sin, would they not be more ready to adore distinguishing grace? Let us both admire and adore tonight, as we sing—

“A monument of grace,
A sinner saved by blood;
The streams of love I trace
Up to the Fountain, God;
And in his sacred bosom see
Eternal thoughts of Love to me.”

PRAY.

Thank you for listening to the Morning and Evening podcast. If you do not know the Lord as your Savior, here is how you can be saved from Hell and walk with the Lord morning and evening until you go to that wonderful place called Heaven when you die:

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 18:8: “Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now that is bad news, but here’s the good news.

Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. I am sorry for my sins, and today I choose to turn from my sins. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. I trust Jesus Christ as my Savior and I choose to follow Him as Lord from this day forward. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you believed in your heart that Jesus Christ died on the Cross, was buried, and rose again, allow me to say, congratulations on doing the most important thing in life and that is accepting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour! For more information to help you grow in your newfound faith in Christ, go to Gospel Light Society.com and read “What To Do After You Enter Through the Door”. Jesus Christ said in John 10:9, “I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.”

If you accepted Jesus Christ as your Savior today, please email me at [email protected] and let us know. There is some free material that we want to send you. If you have a prayer request, please e-mail that to us as well, and we will pray for you until you tell us to stop.

God loves you. We love you. And may God bless you.

Trump, Pence Thank Churches for Suspending Services: Americans ‘Are Coming Together’

Trump, Pence Thank Churches for Suspending Services: Americans ‘Are Coming Together’

President Trump and Vice President Mike Pence this weekend thanked church leaders for their cooperation during the COVID-19 outbreak, saying Americans are coming together to defeat the pandemic.

On Saturday, Trump said he and Pence had a “great conversation” over the phone the previous day with religious leaders.

“This has been a week of national action and of great national solidarity,” Trump said.

Pence noted that churches have suspended services to prevent the coronavirus from spreading.

“We want to thank all the religious leaders from every community of faith in the country making the hard choice to suspend services, to have online services, even while those ministries are continuing to support food banks and come alongside the most vulnerable,” Pence said. “And, of course, the chorus of prayers that is coming up from communities of faith around the country is making the difference that it always has in the life of this nation.”

It’s important for religious Americans, Pence said, to continue to donate to their place of worship when it’s not meeting.

“One thing the president and I promised was to remind people that on the weekends that you’re not in the pews, it’s still … a good idea to – if you can – to go ahead and make that donation. Because all the ministries are continuing to play a vital role in our communities and we encourage your…

PODCAST: The Scripture & the Sense Podcast #452: Amos 5:6 with Daniel Whyte III

This is Daniel Whyte III president of Gospel Light Society International with The Scripture & the Sense Podcast #452, where I read the Word of God and give the sense of it based on an authoritative commentary source such as the Bible Knowledge Commentary or Matthew Henry Commentary. This podcast is based upon Nehemiah 8:8 where it says Ezra and the Levites “read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.” The aim of this podcast is that through the simple reading of the Word of God and the giving of the sense of it, the church would be revived and the world would be awakened.

Today we are reading Amos 5:6.

6 Seek the Lord, and ye shall live; lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph, and devour it, and there be none to quench it in Bethel.

________

That was Amos 5:6. Now here is the sense of it.

The Bible Knowledge Commentary reads:

The command to seek the Lord meant to turn to Him, not in ritual worship, but by doing good and hating evil. Those who did would live: when the unquenchable and devouring fire of the invader swept through the house of Joseph (the Northern Kingdom), the seekers would be the remnant spared in mercy.

____________

Thank you for listening to the Scripture & The Sense Podcast. Remember to read the Word of God each and every day and pray without ceasing to God for wisdom to understand it and apply it to your life. Most importantly, believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved. Please stay tuned for a complete presentation of the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ so that you can get your soul saved from Hell to that wonderful place called Heaven when you die. May God bless you and keep you is my prayer.
