What C.S. Lewis, Martin Luther Would Say About Our Coronavirus Panic

ANALYSIS

It’s easy to panic in times of great uncertainty, like with the growing concern over the novel coronavirus, formally named COVID-19. We should all take necessary precautions, following the instructions given to us by medical experts.

We should also remember that, no matter the situation, nothing happens outside God’s control or care. Scripture calls the Lord our “rock,” our “fortress,” and our “deliverer” (Psalm 18:2). Some 72 years ago, the great C.S. Lewis reminded his readers of those truths, calming fears over an atomic bomb.

FAITHWIRE  Corona Chaos: We Can Be Concerned, But Christians Should Not Be Shaken

Those words are just as appropriate now, regarding COVID-19. The following is an excerpt from an essay Lewis wrote in the 1940s, which is now found in a collection of his works called “Present Concerns.”

In one way, we think a great deal too much of the atomic bomb. “How are we to live in an atomic age?” I am tempted to reply: “Why, as you would have lived in the sixteenth century when the plague visited London almost every year, or as you would have lived in a Viking age when raiders from Scandinavia might land and cut your throat any night; or indeed, as you are already living in an age of cancer, an age of syphilis, an age of paralysis, an age of air raids, an age of railway accidents, an age of motor accidents.”

In other words, do not let us begin by exaggerating the novelty of our situation. Believe me, dear sir or madam, you and all whom you love were already sentenced to death before the atomic bomb was invented: and quite a high percentage of us were going to die in unpleasant ways. We had, indeed, one very great advantage over our ancestors—anesthetics; but we have that still. It is perfectly ridiculous to go about whimpering and drawing long faces because the scientists have added one more chance of painful and premature death to a world which already bristled with such chances and in which death itself was not a chance at all, but a certainty.

This is the first point to be made: and the first action to be taken is to pull ourselves together. If we are all going to be destroyed by an atomic bomb, let that bomb when it comes find us doing sensible and human things—praying, working, teaching, reading, listening to music, bathing the children, playing tennis, chatting to our friends over a pint and a game of darts—not huddled together like frightened sheep and thinking about bombs. They may break our bodies (a microbe can do that) but they need not dominate our minds.

Lewis is not the only one with wise words in the middle of panic.

The 16th century theologian Martin Luther had this to say during the bubonic plague, offering his thoughts on how best to practically and spiritually overcome.

You ought to think this way: “Very well, by God’s decree, the enemy has sent us poison and deadly offal. Therefore, I shall ask God mercifully to protect us. Then I shall fumigate, help purify the air, administer medicine, and take it. I shall avoid places and persons where my presence is not needed in order not to become contaminated and thus perchance infect and pollute others, and so cause their death as a result of my negligence. If God should wish to take me, he will surely find me and I have done what he has expected of me and so I am not responsible for either my own death or the death of others. If my neighbor needs me, however, I shall not avoid place or person, but will go freely.”

As I wrote earlier this week, as Christians, it is OK to be concerned, particularly if we are in an at-risk class or love someone who is, like the elderly and those who are immunocompromised.

But we don’t need to be gripped with fear, because the Lord has given us a spirit “of power, love, and self-discipline” and has encouraged us to “pray about everything,” telling him what we are scared of, worried about, and dwelling on (2 Timothy 1:7, Philippians 4:6).

PODCAST: How the Lord is Leading Me to Pray During the Coronavirus Pandemic-Plague by Daniel Whyte III (Praying Through the Bible #396)

Here’s how Daniel Whyte III will be praying during the coronavirus pandemic-plague:

1. Praying and asking God to be thorough with His church. 1 Peter 4:17 says, “For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?” A. J. Gordon prayed, “Be thorough with me, Jesus; be thorough with me.”

2. Praying for Christians: 2 Chronicles 7:14 says, “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”

3. Praying that Christians would begin witnessing to the lost: Luke 10:2 says, “Therefore said he unto them, The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few: pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he would send forth labourers into his harvest.”

4. Praying for the salvation of the lost: John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Romans 10:9-13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

George Atkins wrote:

Brethren we have met to worship
And adore the Lord our God
Will you pray with all your power
While we try to preach the Word
All is vain unless the Spirit
Of the Holy One comes down
Brethren pray and holy manna
Will be showered all around

Brethren see poor sinners ’round you
Slumbering on the brink of woe
Death is coming hell is moving
Can you bear to let them go
See our fathers and our mothers
And our children sinking down
Brethren pray and holy manna
Will be showered all around

Sisters will you join to help us
Moses’ sister aided him
Will you help the trembling mourners
Who are struggling hard with sin
Tell them all about the Saviour
Tell them that He will be found
Sisters pray and holy manna
Will be showered all around

– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

Now, if you are with us today, and you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour, your first prayer needs to be what we call the Sinner’s Prayer. First, please understand that you are a sinner, just as I am, and that you have broken God’s laws. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now this is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9 & 13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved… For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

If you believe that Jesus Christ died on the Cross for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, and you want to trust Him for your Salvation today, please pray with me this simple prayer: Holy Father God, I realize that I am a sinner and that I have done some bad things in my life. For Jesus Christ sake, please forgive me of my sins. I now believe with all of my heart that Jesus Christ died for me, was buried, and rose again. Lord Jesus, please come into my heart and save my soul and change my life today. Amen.

If you just trusted Jesus Christ as your Saviour, and you prayed that prayer and meant it from your heart, I declare to you that based upon the Word of God, you are now saved from Hell and you are on your way to Heaven. Welcome to the family of God! Congratulations on trusting Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour. You have done the most important thing in life. I Still Believe Challenges Society’s ‘Narcissistic’ Definition of Love, Directors Say

I Still Believe Challenges Society’s ‘Narcissistic’ Definition of Love, Directors Say

The directors of the new faith-based film I Still Believe say fans of romantic movies will get the enchanting story they crave – yet it is told through a biblical lens that reveals the true definition of love.

I Still Believe (PG) opens this weekend, telling the true story of Christian singer Jeremy Camp’s marriage to his first wife, Melissa, who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer shortly after they met.

The film has received mainstream appeal due to its well-known lead actors, K.J. Apa and Britt Robertson, who play Jeremy and Melissa. Seventeen Magazine called I Still Believe the most-anticipated romantic film of the year.

It was co-directed by Jon and Andrew Erwin, who also co-directed the 2018 hit I Can Only Imagine.

“People are going to go for the romance, and it’s going to fulfill on that level, and yet they’re going to get God’s love, and they’re going to get a new view of what a real love story is – not only between two people, but also with God,” Jon Erwin told Christian Headlines. “There’s a real opportunity with this movie on that front, especially for younger people.”

The love in I Still Believe, he added, is “sacrificial” and “selfless.”

“It’s laying down your life for someone that you love,” he said.

Put another way, Erwin said, it’s the opposite of “today’s narcissistic culture where everything is about me.”

Andrew Erwin…

Sudan Orders Removal of Church Committees Appointed by Bashir Regime

Sudan Orders Removal of Church Committees Appointed by Bashir Regime

JUBA, South Sudan, March 12, 2020 (Morning Star News) – Sudan’s religious affairs ministry on Wednesday (March 11) abolished committees imposed on churches under former President Omar al-Bashir, a move expected to return oversight of churches to their rightful leaders, sources said.

“All government-appointed committees are abolished as of today [Wednesday, March 11, 2020],” the order signed by Minister of Religious Affairs Nasr al-Din Mufreh states.

Further legal action will be needed to regain some church properties lost under committees imposed by the government, sources said. The Bashir regime had taken over properties of the Sudan Presbyterian Evangelical Church (SPEC) by imposing a committee to run its affairs and also imposed a new administration on the Sudanese Church of Christ (SCOC) that resulted in the closing of at least one of its churches.

The ministerial order was lauded as the first move in Christian leaders regaining oversight of their churches and properties. The Rev. Yahia Abdelrahim Nalu, head of SPEC, described it as a good step forward.

“Most of the problems that occurred in churches, i.e. the Sudan Presbyterian Evangelical Church, the Sudanese Church of Christ and the Pentecostal churches, were caused by the committees appointed by the government,” Nalu told Morning Star News.

Churches in Sudan became a target of the previous Islamist government shortly…

How COVID-19 is saving lives: Looking for ways to redeem tragedy for eternal good

At this writing, there are more than 127,000 confirmed cases
of COVID-19 worldwide, with more than 4,700 deaths. The pandemic is causing
global chaos on a level unprecedented in my lifetime. From physical suffering
to economic turmoil, political controversy, and personal fear, the virus is
clearly affecting the world in calamitous ways.

It might surprise you, however, to learn that the virus is also accomplishing some good.

For instance, G-FEED, which describes itself as “an
interdisciplinary group working cooperatively to understand the relationship
between society and the environment,” has published an article by Marshall
Burke (environmental sciences professor at Stanford University) with the title,
“COVID-19 reduces economic activity, which reduces pollution, which saves
lives.”

The article focuses on the massive reduction in air
pollution in China resulting from the drastic economic slowdown in that country
following its aggressive response to the virus. Ground-based concentrations of
key pollutants fell substantially across much of the country. Given clear
evidence that breathing dirty air contributes heavily to premature mortality,
the author then calculates the effect of this drop in pollution on mortality in
the country.

Dr. Burke determines that, by the most conservative
calculation, two months of reductions in pollution likely saved the lives of 1,400
children under the age of five and 51,700 adults over the age of seventy in
China. This would be twenty times the number of lives lost directly to the
virus (at the time of the article’s writing on March 8).

As Dr. Burke notes, “It seems clearly incorrect and foolhardy to conclude that pandemics are good for health.” He adds, “The effects calculated above are just the health benefits of the air pollution changes, and do not account for the many other short- or long-term negative consequences of social and economic disruption on health or other outcomes; these…

Televangelist Kenneth Copeland Attempts to Heal People of Coronavirus Through TV Screen

Televangelist Kenneth Copeland Attempts to Heal People of Coronavirus Through TV Screen

Controversial televangelist Kenneth Copeland has come under fire for attempting to heal people of coronavirus through the television screen.

Copeland was broadcasting a program on his “Victory” channel titled “Standing Against Coronavirus,” when he issued a lengthy prayer for any of his viewers who might be suffering with the illness.

“Put your hand on that television set,” the preacher said as he reached out to the screen, his hands coated with oil. “Hallelujah. Thank you, Lord Jesus. He received your healing. Now say it: ‘I take it. I have it. It’s mine. I thank you and praise you for it …’”

He went on: “According to the Word of God, I am healed. And I consider not my own body. I consider not symptoms in my own body, but only that which God has promised.”

The long-time “health and wealth” preacher has courted controversy for peddling a theology that suggests God will heal all those who can muster up enough faith to believe for it. During his prayer, he doubled-down on this belief system, declaring: “I am not the sick trying to get healed. I am the healed, and the Devil is trying to give me the flu!”

It’s not the first time Kenneth has spoken oddly about devils, demons and…

Texas Pastor Kirbyjon Caldwell, Former Adviser to Presidents Obama and Bush, Pleads Guilty to Fraud

After denying any wrongdoing on his part for nearly two years, prominent Houston pastor Kirbyjon Caldwell, who served as a spiritual adviser to former Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush, has admitted to conspiracy to commit wire fraud in connection to his role in a multimillion investment scheme that preyed on the elderly.

Last summer, Caldwell, who was indicted in 2018 for defrauding investors — including elderly members of his Windsor Village United Methodist Church — of more than $1 million, maintained his innocence as his co-defendant, Gregory Alan Smith, pleaded guilty to wire fraud.

“These defendants used their positions as religious leaders and investment advisors to defraud Louisiana residents — many of whom are elderly and retired,” U.S. Attorney David C. Joseph said in a release Wednesday. “In doing so, the defendants abused the trust and respect of their victims for the sole purpose of stealing their money. This type of deceit can be devastating for victims, especially when life savings are lost. My office will continue to vigorously prosecute those who use confidence schemes to prey upon the elderly and people of faith.”

Caldwell and Smith, who is an investment adviser based in Shreveport, Louisiana, were both charged with 13 counts, including conspiracy to commit money laundering when they raised around $3.5 million in Historical Chinese bonds from 29 investors between 2013 to 2014.

Caldwell and Smith reportedly tricked investors into believing that they were buying the Historical Chinese bonds through a Shreveport-based company called Smith Financial Group LLC. The Department of Justice noted that the bonds were issued by the former Republic of China prior to losing power to the communist government in 1949.

“They are not recognized by China’s current government and have no investment value. Smith and Caldwell promised high rates of return, sometimes three to 15 times the value of the investments. Instead of investing the funds, the defendants used them to pay personal loans, credit card balances, mortgages, vehicle purchases and other personal expenses,” the DOJ said.

Caldwell received $760,000, which he used for personal expenses, including mortgage payments. His limited liability company also received $1 million, of which $175,000 was transferred to the pastor. Smith received $1 million of the funds invested which he splurged on luxury vehicles, the DOJ said.

According to a KTBS report, a woman who was a victim of the pastor’s scheme lost her entire life savings of $200,000 and is now living as a “hovel.” She is so destitute she struggles to pay her utilities.

In court on Wednesday, Caldwell entered his guilty plea before U.S. District Judge Maurice Hicks who allowed him to remain free on bond until sentencing on July 22.

Friday the 13th and fear of coronavirus: The positive mindset I hope we’ll adopt

On average, there is a Friday the thirteenth every 212 days. Such a day occurs in any month that begins with a Sunday. Fear of this day has been given the scientific name, “paraskevidekatriaphobia,” from the Greek words for Friday, thirteen, and fear.

By contrast, we don’t yet have a scientific name for “fear of coronavirus,” but that makes such fear no less real. Or less dangerous.

Beware the “bias for threat”

Sophie Trudeau, wife of the Canadian prime minister, has tested positive for coronavirus. The Capitol, White House, and Supreme Court have been closed to the public

US stocks had their worst day since the 1987 stock market crash. The NCAA canceled its basketball tournaments for the first time in history. All eleven Disney theme parks in North America, Europe, and Asia have been closed. The PGA has canceled the Players Championship and the next three events on the schedule.

These are frightening days, indeed.

One psychologist notes, “Fear influences how we react to media coverage of health hazards.” In times of anxiety, we tend to pay more attention to threat-related information, which drives up our anxiety and distress.

This “bias for threat” can exacerbate our reaction to the disease, leading to panic. And panic is “an irrational fear reaction that, by definition, your body’s reaction and adrenaline response take over from your ability to actually rationally evaluate the situation.”

Cortisol and lymphocytes

Responding appropriately to fear is therefore vital not just for our psychological wellbeing but for our physical health as well.

According to Cleveland Clinic, stress causes our bodies to produce greater levels of the hormone cortisol and can cause anxiety and depression. These can lead to elevated inflammation that can compromise our immune system.

Stress also decreases the body’s lymphocytes—the white blood cells that help fight infection. The…
