PODCAST: The Resurrection, Part 17 (Reasons to Believe #164 with Daniel Whyte III)

Welcome to The Reasons to Believe podcast, episode #164. My name is Daniel Whyte III, president of Gospel Light Society International.

Our Reasons to Believe Scripture Passage for today is Acts 1:1-9. It reads, “The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach, Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen: To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God: And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power. But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.”

Our Reasons to Believe quote for today is from Christoph Kreitz. He said, “It is a good thing to be skeptical and check out things before you believe them. The Bereans did that (Acts 17:11) and were highly commended for this. But once the facts are clear it is irrational to reject the logical conclusions. And this is exactly what refusing to believe in the resurrection is about. It is irrational, not based on facts but on the dogma that there cannot be any supernatural events. This however is a presupposition that is hard to justify. It would be the same as saying “there are no subatomic particles – it’s just a myth physicists dreamed up to get money from the government. We can’t see them so they don’t exist” and completely rejecting any plausible evidence to the contrary. It doesn’t make sense to argue that way, because it is detached from common sense and instead based on an absolute claim that cannot be substantiated.”

Our Reason to Believe powerpoint today is titled “The Resurrection, Part 17” from “The Handbook of Christian Apologetics” by Peter Kreeft and Ronald K. Tacelli.

The authors continue with the sixth part of this chapter subtitled, “Refutation of the Myth Theory: Six Arguments.”

2. A second problem is that there was not enough time for myth to develop. The original demythologizers pinned their case onto a late second-century date for the writing of the Gospels; several generations have to pass before the added mythological elements can be mistakenly believed to be facts. Eyewitnesses would be around before that to discredit the new, mythic versions. We know of other cases where myths and legends of miracles developed around a religious founder—for example, Buddha, Lao-tzu and Muhammad. In each case, many generations passed before the myth surfaced.

The dates for the writing of the Gospels have been pushed back by every empirical manuscript discovery; only abstract hypothesizing pushes the date forward. Almost no knowledgeable scholar today holds what Bultmann said it was necessary to hold in order to believe the myth theory, namely, that there is no first-century textual evidence that Christianity began with a divine and resurrected Christ, not a human and dead one.

Some scholars still dispute the first-century date for the Gospels, especially John’s. But no one disputes that Paul’s letters were written within the lifetime of eyewitnesses to Christ. So let us argue from Paul’s letters.

Either these letters contain myth or they do not. If so, there is lacking the several generations necessary to build up a commonly believed myth. There is not even one generation. If these letters are not myth, then the Gospels are not either, for Paul affirms all the main claims of the Gospels.

Julius Muller put the antimyth argument this way:

One cannot imagine how such a series of legends could arise in an historical age, obtain universal respect, and supplant the historical recollection of the true character [Jesus]… if eyewitnesses were still at hand who could be questioned respecting the truth of the recorded marvels. Hence, legendary fiction, as it likes not the clear present time but prefers the mysterious gloom of gray antiquity, is wont to seek a remoteness of age, along with that of space, and to remove its boldest and most rare and wonderful creations into a very remote and unknown land. (The Theory of Myths in Its Application to the Gospel History Examined and Confuted [London, 1844], p. 26)

Muller challenged his nineteenth-century contemporaries to produce a single example anywhere in history of a great myth or legend arising around a historical figure and being generally believed within thirty years after the figure’s death. No one has ever answered him.

Lord willing, we will continue this topic in our next episode.

—PRAYER—

Now, if you are listening today, and you do not know the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour, allow me to show you how.

First, accept the fact that you are a sinner, and that you have broken God’s law. The Bible says in Romans 3:23: “For all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.”

Second, accept the fact that there is a penalty for sin. The Bible states in Romans 6:23: “For the wages of sin is death…”

Third, accept the fact that you are on the road to hell. Jesus Christ said in Matthew 10:28: “And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” Also, the Bible states in Revelation 21:8: “But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.”

Now this is bad news, but here’s the good news. Jesus Christ said in John 3:16: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Just believe in your heart that Jesus Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead by the power of God for you so that you can live eternally with Him. Pray and ask Him to come into your heart today, and He will.

Romans 10:9-13 says, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Until next time, my friend, please keep in mind these reasons to believe. God bless!

Meghan Markle ‘Surprised’ British Vogue’s Edward Enninful with Glitter Party Hats to Celebrate their Special Issue in Unseen Video Shared on her ‘Sussex Royal’ Instagram

Meghan Markle surprised British Vogue’s Edward Enninful with an impromptu celebration to mark their collaboration on the September edition in an unseen video.

The Duchess of Sussex, 38, handed the fashion designer a sparkly party hat and horns as a thank you for agreeing to let her be the first ever guest editor of the magazine.

In the two-and-a-half minute clip shared to the Sussex Royal Instagram page this evening, the duo call up the women Meghan selected to be on her front cover.

Enninful also praises the duchess for her ‘editor’s eye’, claiming: ‘I’ve never seen anything like it. You were so thorough from beginning to end.’

The video, which was filmed in London in August last year, begins with Enninful revealing he received a text from Meghan asking him to help her with her Smart Works project.

He recalled being ‘so excited’ as he walked into Kensington Palace, to which Meghan replied: ‘Oh my gosh.’

Enninful said: ‘I was like, “Lovely to meet you, Duchess.” And you were like… “Call me Meghan!”

After he agreed to work with her on her charity project, Meghan told how she decided to see if she could ‘push it just a little bit more’ and ask him if he was willing to let her guest edit an edition of Vogue.

Earlier today @edward_enninful, the Editor in Chief of @britishvogue shared: “#ForcesForChange, guest edited by The Duchess of Sussex @SussexRoyal, was our fastest-selling issue in the history of #BritishVogue ( sold out in 10 days) and the biggest-selling issue of the past decade. I can’t wait to see what 2020 has in store…” • To celebrate, we wanted to share this never before seen video behind the scenes with Edward and The Duchess of Sussex on the creation of this special issue. Please note, this was filmed last August in London. Congratulations to all of those who took part in the 2019 September issue, and huge thanks to those who supported and helped make this a success! Enninful praised the duchess for her attention to detail, gushing: ‘You have an editor’s eye, I’ve never seen anything like it. You were so thorough from beginning to end.’

Meghan admitted that she left the fashion element ‘to the professionals’, adding: ‘I did say, “Can you do Commonwealth fashion?” “Can you do sustainability?” “Can we make sure the point of view is really in the right ethos?” And then I’ll leave it to the experts.’

Enninful replied: ‘You wanted to focus on women who are changing the world, women who are doing incredible things, which really is in line with what we do at British Vogue.’

The duchess told how one of the elements of the September edition of British Vogue, which sold out in 10 days and was the biggest selling issue of the past decade, was its eye-catching mirror front cover.

‘Having the mirror – anyone, no matter who they are, picking up this issue, should be able to see themself in it, and that’s what I feel really proud that we’ve accomplished,’ Meghan said.

At that point, the former actress revealed she had a ‘surprise’ for Enninful, to congratulate him for bringing her vision to life.

She then hands him a bright red glittering had before placing a silver mini top hat on her own head.

The duo then blow their party horns before collapsing into giggles.

Meghan selected 15 ‘trailblazers’ and ‘changemakers’ to appear on her front cover.

The line-up of women she admires included celebrities, politicians and activists known for championing issues such as diversity, body positivity, transgender rights and climate change.

In the video, the duo call up several women – with Meghan admitting her first choice was Yara Shahidi.

‘I kid you not the very first name that I said I wanted on the cover was you,’ she told the 19-year-old US actor and model who launched Eighteenx18, a movement to encourage voter turnout.

Meghan and Enniful also called up Laverne Cox, Sinead Burke, Francesca Hayward, Adut Akech and Adwoa Aboah, who exclaimed: ‘What a f*****g great project!’

Meghan told Adut: ‘Just know that we are so so proud to have you on the cover.’

Meanwhile Jane Fonda had some kind words for the duchess, exclaiming: ‘Meghan I’m so proud of you for using your amazing platform and your strong voice, and I’m so honoured to be a part of it with those other amazing women, thank you so much for including me.’

Earlier this year Meghan and Prince Harry, 35, quit as senior members of the Royal Family and are currently residing in Canada, planning to split their time between British and the US.

Meghan’s role as guest editor represents one of the most radical moves in Vogue’s 100-year history, with the magazine saying it considers the new September issue to be its most important edition of it’s year.

The cover of the magazine showed various inspirational women, but left one box blank, with only a mirror, showing readers that they too can make a difference in the world.

The duchess, a former actress and avowed feminist, had initially been asked to appear on the cover herself. But Vogue’s editor-in-chief Edward Enninful said Meghan refused as she thought it would appear too ‘boastful’.

In a statement, Meghan said: ‘Through this lens I hope you’ll feel the strength of the collective in the diverse selection of women chosen for the cover as well as the team of support I called upon within the issue to help bring this to light.

‘I hope readers feel as inspired as I do, by the forces for change they’ll find within these pages.’

Instead the duchess wanted to focus on the ‘women she admires’ from the ‘frontline of fashion, film, tech and wellness’.

Meghan also selected content for the issue which, according to Mr Enninful, shows she is willing to wade into issues of ‘female empowerment, mental health, race or privilege’.

Enninful, who has been the editor-in-chief of the magazine for the last two years, told  in July how he has always had ‘profound respect’ for the Duchess – before discussing why he thinks she is the ultimate force for change.

Speaking on a personal note, he wrote: ‘I can’t overstate how much it meant to me to see HRH The Duke of Sussex marry this brilliant, bi-racial, American powerhouse.’

‘I simply never imagined that, in my lifetime, someone of my colour would – or could – enter the highest echelons of our Royal Family.’

While many royal watchers at the time thought the decision was too  political for a then member of the Royal Family, who are supposed to stay politically neutral, Meghan revealed it was her who reached out to Edward.

Meghan, who at the time was five months’ pregnant with son Archie, said: ‘So I asked the question. Actually, I typed and deleted the question several times until I built up the courage to ask the question in question: “Instead of doing the cover, would you be open to me guest editing your September issue?”‘

Enninful, replied that he would ‘love’ for Meghan to be his guest editor, she said.

Movers drop $200,000 piano: Two ways to change the world

Angela Hewitt is considered one of the world’s leading classical pianists. All her European recordings over the last seventeen years were performed on her Fazioli F278 concert grand piano, the only one in the world with four pedals. The instrument was kept at her home in Italy and valued at over $200,000.

Two weeks ago, movers came to her recording studio to tell
her they had “dropped” it.

“The iron frame is broken, as well as much else in the
structure and action (not to mention the lid and other parts of the
case),” she wrote on Facebook. “It’s kaput.”

Hewitt is now dealing with her insurance and hopes to travel
in the next few months to Sacile, Italy, where Faziolis are made, to pick a new
one. But it won’t replace what she lost. “I adored this piano,” she
wrote. “It was my best friend, best companion. I loved how it felt when I
was recording—giving me the possibility to do anything I wanted.”

“Now it is no longer.”

Two ways to change the world

Angela Hewitt’s now-ruined piano was so valuable for two
reasons: how unique it was and how it made her feel to play it.

Our value to others is based on the same two factors.

God made you like no other human being. Not just with your
DNA and fingerprints, but with your gifts and abilities. Your education and
experiences, your challenges and limitations, your successes and failures have
all blended into the uniqueness that is you.

As a result, you can serve God and
others in a way no one else can. When you try to be what you’re not, you keep
us from experiencing what you are. Like a jigsaw puzzle, your piece fills a gap
no one else can. You’re a piano like no other.

Your uniqueness as yourself leads
to the uniqueness of your impact on others. You make them feel what no one else
can make them feel, enabling them to be and do what they could not otherwise be
and do.

Think about the people in
Scripture who most influenced the world. Could…

Lord of the Rings Star Says the World Owes Christianity ‘the Greatest Debt of Thanks’

Lord of the Rings Star Says the World Owes Christianity ‘the Greatest Debt of Thanks’

The Lord of the Rings star John Rhys-Davies, a self-described “rationalist” and “skeptic,” says the world owes Christianity “the greatest debt of thanks” for making the world a better place.

Rhys-Davies made the declaration on the red carpet at the 28th annual Movieguide Awards, held late last month at the historic Avalon Theater in Hollywood. The awards show celebrates faith and family content in movies and television. The actor’s voice was featured as Evangelist in the animated film “Pilgrims Progress,” which was honored at the gala.

“I count myself a rationalist and a skeptic, and I find myself constantly defending Christians and Christianity,” Rhys-Davies said in an interview with The Christian Post. “I find that wonderful because we seem to forget that Christian civilization has made the world a better place than it ever was. One of the great glories was the abolition of slavery, for instance. And there is still slavery and that makes me very mad.”

The Welsh actor, who played Gimli in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, also has a starring role in the upcoming faith-based film, I Am Patrick, which releases for St. Patrick’s Day. Fathom Events is set to screen the inspirational docudrama nationwide on March 17 and 18. It examines the life of the fifth-century missionary saint who is often called the Apostle of Ireland.

The movie garnered positive…

Kentucky Must Pay Atheist $150,000 for Rejecting ‘IM GOD’ License Plate

Kentucky Must Pay Atheist $150,000 for Rejecting ‘IM GOD’ License Plate

A federal judge this week ordered Kentucky to pay an atheist man more than $150,000 in attorneys’ fees after the state denied his request for a personalized license plate reading, “IM GOD.”

Judge Gregory F. Van Tatenhove issued the Feb. 10 decision three months after he declared the state’s action unconstitutional.

The state argued it had a legitimate government interest in “promot[ing] highway safety” by denying the plate because “potentially controversial messages . . . could lead to confrontation or distraction on its highways.”

But in his Nov. 13 ruling, Tatenhove wrote, “Vanity plates are private speech protected by the First Amendment.” The state, he noted, had permitted plates stating “IM4GOD” and “LUVGOD” but denied the request by plaintiff Ben Hart for an “IM GOD” plate. Therefore, he argued, the state’s position was not viewpoint neutral.

“The Commonwealth does not allow drivers to say anything they want with a license plate message,” the judge wrote. “That’s fine, but the First Amendment also imposes limits on the Commonwealth. And in this case … the Commonwealth went too far.”

Hart is a self-described atheist and “freethinker,” and was represented by the Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU). FFRF calls itself an organization of “atheists, agnostics and skeptics of any…

The Problem of Western Indifference Regarding Persecution

Over 260 million Christians live in places with high levels of persecution. Every day they face danger and struggles, yet most of the West is ignorant or indifferent. Why?

Todd Nettleton with Voice of the Martyrs, USA says the problem is two-fold. There are problems both with the Church and the government.

1 Corinthians 12 talks about the Body of Christ. The Church should be eagerly watching and caring for every member. However, often the Church does not see or seek out those actively suffering with persecution.

Nettleton says, “It’s a misapplication of Scripture, which calls us when one part of the body is suffering, the other parts of the body are supposed to feel that. If we are cut off, [we] can’t feel that and so there’s the aspect of the Church and why doesn’t the Church pay more attention?”

Some of that answer may be ignorance. Voice of the Martyrs, USA seeks to change that. One of their purposes is, “To promote the fellowship of all believers by informing the world of the faith and courage of persecuted Christians, thereby inspiring believers to a deeper level of commitment to Christ and involvement in His Great Commission.”

However, the Church is not alone in a quiet response.

Government leaders do not often actively pursue these issues for several reasons. Nettleton details two of those reasons.

Christians in Pakistan Forced to Pay Blood Money Before Release

The Pakistani government made 39 innocent Christians pay a large sum of blood money, known as a diya, before releasing them from prison.

“There was no evidence against [these Christians],” says Bruce Allen of FMI. “But [the government] said, ‘hey, if we can get diya paid to the victims’ families, then the judge is absolutely free to commute a sentence and release these prisoners.’”

And over 193,000 US dollars (the equivalent of the sum paid) was paid as diya, or blood money. Allen says this payment is a part of Islamic law in Pakistan, and that it doesn’t mean the men have been considered guilty of committing the crime.

But the families of the Christians never could have paid this price. Allen says most Christians in Pakistan are impoverished, and these families especially so, since their husbands couldn’t earn any money.

Allen says, “These were charitable donations most likely from overseas, where people said, ‘if we know that the judge is considering the payment, then we want to help these families out to do this.’”

Irfan Bashir Masih, one of the Christians released, said that he was not even present when the two Muslim men were killed. He had no hope that he would see his family again until the money was paid. Read more here.

World Missionary Press Partners with ‘Every Home for Christ’ to Print Scripture Booklet for Wolof Muslims in West Africa

In West Africa, a region plagued by military coups and Islamic terrorism, Senegal stands as a pillar of peace and stability. How to pray for West Africa.

Some analysts attribute these traits to the widespread influence of Sufi Islam; Muslims comprise 90- to 95-percent of the country’s population. Among the Wolof people, one of Senegal’s largest ethnic groups, that percentage is even higher.

While these factors support stability, they also challenge Gospel growth.

“The literature really is the major way of sharing the Gospel individually,” Helen Williams of World Missionary Press says about New Testaments and Scripture booklets in widely-used languages.

“[However], one of the things about Senegal – because it is so closely tied to Islam and the Muslim culture – you have to develop relationships with people before they will trust you to accept something,” she explains.

“Much of it has to do with people not wanting to be seen with a Christian.”

World Missionary Press partners with Every Home for Christ and one of the few evangelical believers in Senegal to make God’s Word known. More about that here; the “partner profile” is at the bottom of the page.

“He’s from the Wolof tribe and he came to Christ after some family issues and struggles,” Williams says of WMP’s national coordinator.

The Wolof people remain highly unreached. There are many efforts underway to introduce the Wolof to Christ, but they have little known progress. WMP is striving to equip their partner so he can prayerfully make inroads in the Wolof community.

The ‘five most romantic towns in the world’: The cost and joy of fulfilling our call

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Travel Trivia has listed the “five most romantic towns in the world.”

No. 5 is Santorini, Greece. I’ve visited
there several times while leading biblical study tours of Greece and Turkey.
This iconic village you’ve seen in posters of Greece (white walls with blue
roofs) is more beautiful in person than it is in photos. Watching the sunset on
the ocean is worth the trip.

No. 4 is Bruges, Belgium. The
article notes that it has the most medieval structures of any city in Europe.
I’ve not visited, so I can’t render an opinion.

No. 3 is Kyoto, Japan, with entire
shrines devoted to love. Since the only place in Japan I’ve visited is the
Tokyo airport, I’ll have to take their word for it.

No. 2 is Paris, France, for
obvious reasons. But as with Japan, I’ve only seen the inside of the airport.
(I tend to travel overseas where I can lead biblical study tours, and, sadly,
we have no confirmation that Paul ever visited the City of Light.)

No. 1 is Venice, Italy. While it’s not a biblical site, it’s on the way to places that are. Thus, I can attest personally to the beauty of its canals and quality of its food.

The cost and joy of fulfilling our call

Here’s my point: we tend to be
down on what we’re not up on.

I’m less interested in places I’ve
not seen than in places I have. We appreciate books we understand and movie
plots we can follow more than those we cannot.

In some ways, the reverse should be true. I should list all the places I should visit but haven’t, then make a plan to see them. I should try harder with books and movies I find hard to follow. What I don’t know I should seek to know.

On the other hand, it is important
for us to do most what we do best. Work within your spiritual gifts; stay
within your kingdom assignment. None of us can do what all of us can do, so
identifying and fulfilling our calling is vital (1 Corinthians 12:27).

Here’s…

Mission Aviation Fellowship’s New VBS Program Takes Kids to the Skies

Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) is taking Vacation Bible School to the skies! Well, figuratively. MAF has created a brand new VBS program called SOAR!. Kids get a daily flight plan, learn about unique places around the world, and learn about God’s mission for their lives.

MAF’s Director of Learning and Development Mike Snodgrass says, “We feel like we have a really good story to tell about how MAF partners with other mission agencies to share the love of Jesus in really isolated areas around the world.

“We also know and feel that the SOAR! program that we’ve created is unique because of our focus on missions throughout the whole week, not just a part of the VBS. Currently, there’s really no VBS that’s focused entirely on missions and especially not mission aviation.”

MAF serves people in isolated and hard-to-reach areas with the love of Jesus through aviation. They often work with other ministries and non-profits to provide things like emergency aid and medical or teaching services.

Since they are in the heart of the missions world and work in so many different areas, it was natural for MAF to spearhead a VBS focused on the Great Commission.

With SOAR!, Snodgrass says, “Number one, it’s all about the kids because we know that that’s the focus of any VBS. We want kids to discover who Jesus is and ultimately accept Him as their Lord and Savior.

“We also want to let kids learn about the Great Commission. A lot of kids just don’t know about missions work in general.
