Former Queen’s chaplain explains conversion to Catholicism

Dr Gavin Ashenden, a former chaplain to the Queen and Anglican priest has decided to join the Catholic Church after re-assessing church history and viewing how the two denominations respond to cultural changes.

Speaking to Premier, Gavin Ashenden said: “I began to gain a strong sense that Christianity was under very serious assault and that we had to find a new way of understanding the task in front of us.

“As I looked to Anglicanism – I’m really sorry to say this because one hates to be critical – but in every single generation the Church either converts its surrounding society or it gets converted itself. There’s no ‘steady state theory’ I don’t think in relationship between church and society.

“It seemed to me that Anglicanism was trying to placate secular society and progressive values and I thought that was where spiritual death lay.

“Although I’d spent some time over the last 20 years acting and writing and speaking and saying, ‘look, I really think this is the wrong direction’ – I’ve lost the argument wholesale and the Church of England is continuing to pursue a progressive agenda which I think it will sincerely regret, but the Catholic Church, although it shares the same struggles because we all live in the same culture, has the integrity and the roots to win the struggle and I felt the Anglican Church was determined to lose it.”

School Changes ‘Lord Jesus’ to ‘Baby Jesus’ in Rendition of ‘Away in a Manager’

School Changes ‘Lord Jesus’ to ‘Baby Jesus’ in Rendition of ‘Away in a Manager’

Christian parents of students at a London school are speaking out after the staff deleted “Lord” from the song Away in a Manger and replaced it with “baby” in a Christmas program so as not to offend non-Christian families.

The organization Christian Concern says a mom, known only as “Margarita,” learned of the change when she picked up her children from Whitehall Primary School in Chingford, East London.

“They were so upset, saying to me: ‘Mummy, today in assembly the headteacher told everybody that she would be changing the words to the Christmas song.’ I was so shocked,” the mother said. “As a family, we go to church, pray together and celebrate Christmas as the birth of Jesus as the Son of God.”

The children will sing the revised son during a nativity at a local church.

First published in the late 1800s, Away in a Manger’s first verse reads: “Away in a manger, no crib for His bed; The little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet head; The stars in the sky looked down where He lay; The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.”

The school, though, is changing each mention of “Lord Jesus” to “baby Jesus.”

The headteacher reportedly said the lyric was changed “so all pupils can participate in the celebration.”

Margarita met with the headteacher, who confirmed the change, according to Christian Concern. Margarita says that the tweak to the…

Netflix defends comedy which depicts Jesus as gay

Almost 2 million people have signed a petition calling for The First Temptation of Christ to be taken down because of the offence caused to Christians.

The 46-minute Christmas special was made by YouTube comedy group Porta dos Fundo.

In a statement to Premier defending the show, a spokesman for Netflix said: “Porta dos Fundos is an award-winning comedy group known for their satirical and irreverent views about everyday situations. They have been producing religious specials for a decade; and last year’s comedy special won the International Emmy for Best Comedy.

“We strongly support the creative freedom of the artists we work with. Porta dos Fundos is known for their irreverent and satirical Christmas specials – using their own unique blend of humour to take on cultural and social issues.

“We understand that not everyone agrees with their content – and on Netflix our members choose what they watch.”

Porta dos Fundos has also defended the show stating “freedom of expression is an essential construction for a democratic country”.

Pope abolishes ‘pontifical secret’ code in clergy sex abuse cases

In a new document issued on Tuesday, Francis decreed that information in abuse cases must be protected by church leaders to ensure its “security, integrity and confidentiality”.

But he also said the “pontifical secret” code no longer applies to abuse-related accusations, trials and decisions under the Catholic Church’s canon law.

Francis also raised from 14 to 18 the cut-off age below which the Vatican considers pornographic images to be child pornography.

The new laws were issued on Tuesday – Francis’ 83rd birthday – as he struggles to respond to the global explosion of the abuse scandal, his own missteps in dealing with the issue, and demands for greater transparency and accountability from victims, law enforcement and ordinary Catholics alike.

The new norms are the latest amendment to the Catholic Church’s in-house canon law – a parallel legal code that metes out ecclesial justice for crimes against the faith – in this case relating to the sexual abuse of minors or vulnerable people by priests, bishops or cardinals.

In this legal system, the worst punishment a priest can incur is being defrocked, or dismissed from the clerical state.

Pope Benedict XVI had decreed in 2001 that these cases must be dealt with under “pontifical secret”, the highest form of secrecy in the church. The Vatican had long insisted that such confidentiality was necessary to protect the…

Hallmark waffles on lesbian brides: God’s call to serve a cause is worth its cost

Hallmark aired four television ads that featured brides kissing each other. Conservative groups voiced their opposition, so the company pulled the commercials. LGBTQ activists voiced their opposition to this decision, so Hallmark apologized and announced plans to reinstate the commercials.

In other news, Olivia Newton-John’s iconic black leather jacket from the movie Grease sold at a charity auction last month for $243,200. Here’s what makes the story so surprising: the new owner then gave the jacket back to its original owner.

The anonymous buyer explained: “This jacket belongs to you and the collective soul of those who love you, those for whom you are the soundtrack of their lives. It should not sit in a billionaire’s closet for country club bragging rights. For this reason I humbly and respectfully return it to its rightful owner, which is you.”

Newton-John plans to display the jacket in her cancer center, the cause for which the jacket was auctioned.

“Buy low, sell high”

Yesterday we focused on seeing God as the king of the universe who is relevant to every dimension of our lives, every day of our lives. Today, let’s think about the best way to respond to such relevance.

Hallmark’s waffling reveals a company driven by public perception and profits. Their vacillation makes the generosity of Olivia Newton-John’s anonymous donor even more noteworthy for its singularity.

Our economy is built on consumeristic capitalism. “Buy low, sell high” is more than a stock market axiom—it is the way many people engage society.

We live in a culture that believes it’s all about us. You are a means to my end, a reader whose engagement and support enables my work. I am a means to your end, a writer whose work (hopefully) helps you become who you want to be. We live in a transactional society where selfless sacrifice is counterintuitive and countercultural.

Here’s the way forward: find a…

Next Archbishop of York announced

There had been speculation that the second most senior job in the Church of England would go to a woman bishop.

But it was announced on Tuesday that Bishop Cottrell, who is married with three children, will take up the role when Dr John Sentamu stands down in June next year.

Bishop Cottrell, who in the past has called on the CofE to shed its middle class “Marks & Spencer” image, said he was “humbled and excited at the prospect of becoming the 98th Archbishop of York.

“I will receive the baton from Archbishop Sentamu. These aren’t just big shoes to fill, but a big heart and a big vision.

“However, I am not daunted.

“Archbishop Sentamu and I have worked together in mission on many occasions and I hope to build on the work he has pioneered.

“Working alongside the Archbishop of Canterbury, I hope to help the church be more joyful and more effective in sharing the gospel and bringing hope and unity to our nation.

“Although I was born and grew up in Essex, I lived and served in Huddersfield for nine years. I know and love the north of England. Two of our children were born there.

“I now look forward to returning and being a voice for the North, sharing the liberating good news of the gospel and helping to address the discrepancies of wealth and opportunity that too often favour the South.”

Bishop Cottrell was ordained as a deacon in 1984 and as a priest in 1985.

Understanding the Differences between Church Adoption, Church Fostering, and Church Revitalization

Podcast Episode #598

SUBSCRIBE:
iTunesRSSStitcherTuneIn RadioGoogle Play • iHeart Radio • Spotify

What is the difference between church adoption, church fostering, and church revitalization? Thom and Sam have a helpful and interesting discussion on new trends taking place in North American congregations.

Highlights:

  1. Church adoption: a church comes into the family.
  2. Church fostering: a church is brought into the family for the short term.
  3. Church revitalization: a church regains health internally.

Other highlights:

  • The term of adoption has been helpful and provided context for the new relationship.
  • Church fostering may lead to church adoption, but the goal should be to help and provide leadership for a season.
  • There is no loss in church fostering. It is simply called ministry.
  • The unintended by-product of church fostering, adoption, and revitalization is the creation of a strong leadership pipeline.

Netflix’s ‘Gay Jesus’ Comedy Sparks Outrage, 1.8 Million Signatures Opposing It

Netflix’s ‘Gay Jesus’ Comedy Sparks Outrage, 1.8 Million Signatures Opposing It

A new Netflix comedy that depicts Jesus as being gay has sparked outrage and led to a petition that has amassed more than 1.8 million signatures.

The First Temptation of Christ was produced by Porta dos Fundos, a Brazilian comedy group on YouTube, and is available on Netflix’s U.S. platform with subtitles. The 45-minute episode is rated TV-MA.

The comedy depicts Jesus as a 30-year-old cursing gay man, returning home to visit Mary and Joseph, who are throwing him a birthday party. Jesus brings a man named Orlando to the party, and it’s presumed the two are a couple.

Further, the show depicts Jesus as not wanting to be God’s Son. In the show, both of Jesus’ fathers are at the party: Joseph and a character depicting God the Father.

“I think I’d rather be Joseph’s son,” the character depicting Jesus says in the episode.

At one point, the “God the Father” character propositions Mary for sex.

In another scene, “Jesus” asks “God the Father” if he can leave the party.

“Can I go backpacking with Orlando?”

The request is denied.

A Change.org petition had collected 1.8 million signatures as of Monday morning. It says it wants “the removal of the film from the NETFLIX catalog” and for the comedy group Porta dos Fundos “to be held responsible for the crime of villainous faith.”

“We also want public retraction, as they have seriously offended…

Delaware City Threatened with Lawsuit for Removing Nativity

Delaware City Threatened with Lawsuit for Removing Nativity

A First Amendment protection legal group is threatening to sue a Delaware beach municipality for removing a Catholic church’s nativity scene from the bandstand circle at the town’s boardwalk, according to the Christian Post.

For decades, Saint Edmond Church in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, set up a nativity scene to celebrate Christmas. But last year, the mayor ordered that it be removed, citing that religious displays were not allowed on public property.

Due to community backlash, the city reconsidered the nativity’s location and sent a letter in earlier this year letting the church know that the display could be set up on a property owned by the city chamber about a half-mile down the road from the Bandstand circle.

The Knights of Columbus, a Catholic fraternal service organization, asked city officials if the scene could be displayed on a grassy area near the Bandstand or in a position closer to the circle. But, the city denied those requests.

The First Liberty Institute, a First Amendment protection legal group, got involved on behalf of the church and the Knights of Columbus by sending a letter to city officials.

“It is well established that the speech protections of the First Amendment extend to displays like the creche,” the letter, written by senior counsel Roger Byron, said.

“Even without a blanket ban on religious displays, the City’s prohibition of KOC’s religious Christmas…
