Why ‘American Jews are terrified’: Three responses to the scourge of anti-Semitism

Nearly half of Jewish young people in America have been the victims of anti-Semitic acts in the last five years. Think about that fact for a moment. More than a third have experienced such hatred on a college campus or know someone who has.

Today, 88 percent of Jewish Americans think anti-Semitism is a problem in the US; 84 percent believe the problem has gotten worse over the last five years. The Anti-Semitic League reports that anti-Semitic acts in the US rose 57 percent in 2017 compared to the previous year. These are staggering numbers as well.

Writing for The Atlantic, Emma Green documents a frightening list of anti-Semitic reports in recent months. The title of her article: “American Jews Are Terrified.”

“A crisis of anti-Semitism gripping this nation”

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his Conservative Party won what the New York Times is calling a “striking victory” in yesterday’s election. Last night, the House Judiciary Committee postponed its impeachment vote until this morning.

In the midst of such historic events, the shooting in Jersey City Tuesday afternoon has received less attention but is nonetheless tragic, not just because of the lives that were lost but because of what the attack signifies. New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal stated yesterday, “We are now investigating this as acts of domestic terrorism fueled by anti-Semitism and anti-law enforcement beliefs.”

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio agreed, calling the attack “an act of terror.” He added: “There is a crisis of anti-Semitism gripping this nation.”

This problem is not confined to the US. Some 87 percent of British Jews believe that Jeremy Corbyn, head of the Labour Party in the UK that was defeated yesterday, is anti-Semitic. Nearly half said if he had won yesterday’s election, they would “seriously consider” leaving the country.

Anti-Semitic attacks this year have killed more Jews around the world

Gaza Christians banned from visiting Bethlehem and Jerusalem for Christmas

Permit quotas for Palestinian Christians in Gaza were published by the Israeli military unit of the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) on Thursday.

The occupied West bank and Israel, where many family members and significant religious sites are located will be off limits to Gazan Christians over the festive period, according to a spokeswoman for Israel’s military liaison to the Palestinians.

In addition, Christian residents under the age of 45 will not be permitted to travel abroad while only 100 international permits have been granted to those above that age.

The territory which is home to some 1,000 Christians has been under the control of Islamic group Hamas since 2007 and movements out of the area have been strictly restricted by Israel as a result.

Reuters reports the spokeswoman said that following “security orders”, Gazans would be allowed to travel abroad via Israel’s Allenby Bridge border crossing with Jordan but not to visit cities in Israel or the West Bank.

The decision is in contrast to Israeli policies implemented last year which permitted close to 700 Gazan Christians to travel to Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Nazareth and other holy cities during the festive period.

The number of holiday permits issued to Gazan Christians has continued to decrease in recent years.

Commenting on this downward trend, Israeli rights group, Gisha,…

Notre-Dame illuminated on Litchfield Cathedral in new art exhibit

Lichfield Cathedral said the famous Parisian landmark will be illuminated across the building “as an act of solidarity” and to raise awareness of the fragility of all our cathedrals”.

The central piece of the artwork will be projected throughout the nave covering the floor, walls and ceilings, and will be composed of images from Notre-Dame’s stained glass. It will also include a new piece of music by composer, David Harper.

The artwork is part of a new light and sound show opening at Litchfield Cathedral on Monday called “The Cathedral Illuminated 2019: The Beginning”.

Very Rev Adrian Dorber, Dean of Lichfield Cathedral, said in a statement: “As a Dean of one of England’s gothic cathedrals, I know how much we owe to France for the development of an evocative architectural tradition, one which was so widely adopted by the rest of Europe.

“And, as an act of solidarity with the people of France, we decided to use the windows of Notre-Dame in our central projections this Christmas, enabling our 20,000 visitors to be immersed in…

Evangelical Alliance calls UK to ‘believe for a hopeful future’ after election result

The Conservatives have won their biggest majority since the 1980s, whilst Labour has had its worst election performance since 1935.

In a statement responding to the election outcome, Gavin Calver, EA CEO, said: “I am hopeful for the future of the United Kingdom as we head into 2020.

“Not because one party has won and another has lost, but because we believe in a God who is powerful.

“The last few years have exposed deep divisions in our society, and this election campaign has exacerbated these rather than healing them.

“The task before us all, politicians and public alike, is to work together in our communities and across our nations. I have been reflecting since taking my new leadership role a few months ago on the passion for unity that is at the heart of the Evangelical Alliance, and I think this is one vital way the Church can serve the nation in the months and years ahead.

“Psalm 133 says: ‘How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity’, as the church we must model this, as we come together across ages, races and classes, when men and women stand and work together as one. As we do this, as we show that issues of Brexit and public services, of taxation and spending do not divide our churches, we can be a witness to reconciliation for our communities.

“It’s Christmas, for some the election result is the nightmare before Christmas, for…

General Election results: Christian politicians respond

The Prime Minister was set to visit the Queen at Buckingham Palace with a comfortable majority after gambling on a snap election and winning big.

In his victory speech after retaining his own seat, he claimed a “powerful new mandate to get Brexit done” as his party headed for its biggest Commons majority since the Thatcher era.

Mr Johnson later told jubilant aides in Conservative HQ: “We must understand now what an earthquake we have created.

“The way in which we have changed the political map of this country.

“We have to grapple with the consequences of that, we have to change our own party, we have to rise to the level of events, we must, we just answer the challenge that the British people have given us.”

The Tory landslide prompted Jeremy Corbyn to announce he will not lead Labour into another election after his party suffered humiliation.

Lib Dem leader Jo Swinson also lost her seat to the SNP and quit as party leader. Sir Ed Davey and Baroness Sal Brinton will become joint acting leaders ahead of a leadership contest next year.

The success of the Scottish nationalists and of nationalist parties in Northern Ireland could provide Mr Johnson with another challenge on top of Brexit as it suggests opposition to leaving the EU is hardening there.

Christian politicians have been giving Premier their verdict on the results:

Gary Streeter – Conservative MP for South West…

Israel Is Officially Having a Third Election

Israel Is Officially Having a Third Election

The Knesset in Israel failed to nominate a new candidate for prime minister by the deadline Wednesday, and the country will now head to its third election in less than a year.

According to the Jerusalem Post, the Knesset had 21 days to decide on someone who could form a government by midnight Wednesday.

The Knesset had three weeks to decide after Benny Gantz, Blue and White party chairman did not form a government by the November deadline. A lawmaker needs the support of at least 61 of the 120-member Knesset to form a government.

Previously, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had also not been able to secure a 61-seat majority.

In a video posted online Wednesday, Netanyahu said that Blue and White “wants to hide the fact that they did everything to avoid establishing a broad national unity government that would annex the Jordan Valley, apply Israeli sovereignty on the settlements in Judea and Samaria.

“They forced new elections on us. It is unnecessary and in order to avoid it happening again there is one thing to do and that is to win, and win big – and that is what we’ll do,” he said.

Earlier this month, Netanyahu said the Blue and White party did not work with his Likud party’s proposals for the new government.

“They refused every offer to form a wide unity government,” he said. “Now, when there are only two days left, they are demanding conditions merely to talk.”

Blue and White party members,…

Judge in 7-Year-Old James Younger’s Gender Transition Case Recused

Judge in 7-Year-Old James Younger’s Gender Transition Case Recused

A neutral third-party mediator has recused Judge Kim Cooks from the case of James Younger, a 7-year-old boy whose mother wants to transition him to a girl, according to the Christian Post.

The judge had rejected the jury’s decision to grant sole conservatorship to Younger’s mother, Anne Georgulas, and awarded equal guardianship to both of the boy’s parents as well as to James’ twin brother, Jude. However, Georgulas’ attorney went after Cooks after she posted about the case on Facebook.

The post included an article from The Dallas Morning News announcing Cooks’ decision to reverse the jury’s ruling shortly after Texas Governor Greg Abbott agreed to start an investigation into Younger’s situation. She included a caption stating that neither the “Governor nor any legislature had any influence on the Court’s decision.”

But according to Georgulas’ attorney, the Facebook post was not “in the best interest of the children in the case or to advance justice, but to simply advance her own political aims.”

An amicus attorney appointed by the court agreed and set the task of finding a new judge to Ray Wheless, a conservative Republican administrative judge appointed by Gov. Abbott. According to the Save James Facebook page, the new judge is the Hon. Mary Brown of the 301st Court in Dallas County. Luke Macias, a conservative talk show host in Texas, reported that Brown is a…

Anti-Religion Group Forces Elementary School to Cancel Live Nativity

Anti-Religion Group Forces Elementary School to Cancel Live Nativity

The Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) forced an Oklahoma elementary school to remove a live nativity from its annual Christmas production, according to Breit Bart.

Earlier this year, the nonprofit sent a letter to the Center for Education Law in Oklahoma City regarding an Edmond elementary school’s alleged constitutional violation over the religious scene.

“Teaching students the biblical story of the birth of Jesus and having them regularly rehearse a performance of that story entangles the school with the bible’s devotional message,” the letter said. “Such a performance would be appropriate in a church setting, but not in a public school. We write to ensure that district teachers do not incorporate religious promotion into their lessons and that future school events do not include live nativities or other religious performances.”

Although the school district ultimately gave into the FFRF’s demands, the Liberty Counsel, a nonprofit litigation firm protecting religious liberty, reached out to the Edmond School District and offered free legal assistance to fight the accusations.

“A live Nativity scene as part of a balanced Christmas program is not an automatic Establishment Clause violation,” the letter read. It continued, giving several examples of previous rulings where appeal courts have rejected FFRF’s lawsuits regarding nativity scenes.

Judge Easterbrook wrote…

One-Third of Independent Abortion Clinics Have Closed since 2012

One-Third of Independent Abortion Clinics Have Closed since 2012

Nearly one-third of independent abortion clinics in the U.S. have closed in the past seven years, according to a new report that is drawing concern from the pro-choice community but celebration from pro-lifers.

The report by the Abortion Care Network shows that 32 percent of all independent abortion clinics have closed since 2012, when 510 of them were open. As of November, that number was down to 344, according to the report

Independent abortion clinics don’t receive the political attention that Planned Parenthood does, even though such clinics provide the most abortions. Independent clinics represent about 25 of the nation’s abortion facilities but 58 percent of all abortion procedures, according to the report.

“Over the last decade, abortion clinics have been closing at an alarming rate,” the report says. “Of those closures, the vast majority have been independent abortion care providers.”

The report blamed “medically unnecessary abortion restrictions and financial barriers.”

“Given that independent clinics make up the vast majority of clinics providing abortion care later in pregnancy, the closing of independent clinics means that the constitutional right to care throughout pregnancy increasingly exists in name alone,” the report says. “… Anti-abortion restrictions continue to impose onerous barriers on independent clinics’ ability to provide comprehensive…
