Christian Aid calls for global laws to protect women and girls from violence

Following high profile cases of violence against women in India, Christian Aid urges those in power not only to punish perpetrators of violence, but also to address the structural inequalities that it says hinder the implementation of policies that would keep women and girls safe.

The charity says more needs to be done to address the patriarchal norms and structural inequalities in India that continue to keep women and girls trapped in a cycle of poverty.

In a new report, War on Women: The global toll of conflict and violence, Christian Aid stresses that global gender inequality is exacerbated by the prevalence of all forms of violence against women and girls (VAWG), including forced abortions, rape, female genital mutilation and femicide.

The international NGO has asked leaders in countries, including India, where UN policies to address the issue are not fully implemented, to pay attention to the implementation of the CEDAW (UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women) report.

In India, millions of poor minority and excluded communities, including Dalits, Adivasis and Muslims, are trapped in poverty as a result of stark inequalities, such as gender, caste, ethnicity and religion.

Women and girls are particularly vulnerable to consequential violence – at home and on the…

Charity urges Christians to ‘work within their means’ this Christmas

UK households are expected to spend more than £500 on average this festive season.

A study by the British Retail Consortium predicts an additional £2billion in seasonal shopping compared to last year.

Christian charity Care for the Family says Christmas doesn’t have to be an expensive occasion.

Project Manager Becky Denharder told Premier despite it being “fun to spend money” on our families, it all “adds up” and to “work within their means.”

“I think sometimes parents feel pressure to buy for their kids and we feel pressure to buy for colleagues and lots of different people,” she added.

Denharder suggests there are more long lasting ways to bless our families, saying: “We don’t often remember the gift from our Christmases, but we do remember the memories. We remember the traditions that we take part in and those are the memories that stick.

“It’s about the time that you spend with each other and as Christians, it’s about remembering that Jesus is the reason for Christmas and talking to our children about it.

“Those memories will last much, much longer than all the things that we spend the money on.”

Denharder has urged Christians not to “feel bad” about spending money at Christmas but suggests preparing a budget to help with money management as well as considering funds that can be set aside to help those less fortunate during the season of good will.

Trump Is Outpacing the Past 5 Presidents in Appeals Court Appointments

Trump Is Outpacing the Past 5 Presidents in Appeals Court Appointments

President Trump is outpacing President Obama and every other recent president in appointments to the U.S. federal appeals courts, according to a new analysis that says Trump’s legacy in the legal system will be felt “long after” he leaves office.

“In less than three years as president, President Trump has done nearly as much to shape the courts as President Obama did in eight years,” Ian Millhiser wrote for Vox.com in an article with the subtitle, “No president in recent memory has done more to change the judiciary than Donald Trump.”

Millhiser’s analysis was shared on social media by liberals and conservative leaders this week including by National Right to Life President Carol Tobias, who accompanied the link with a smiling emoji.

“He’s filled the bench with some of the smartest, and some of the most ideologically reliable, men and women to be found in the conservative movement,” Millhiser wrote. “Long after Trump leaves office, these judges will shape American law – pushing it further and further to the right even if the voters soundly reject Trumpism in 2020.”

For starters, Trump’s Supreme Court nominees tipped the ideological balance more so than Obama’s, even though each man nominated two justices. That’s because Trump replaced the moderate/conservative Anthony Kennedy with Brett Kavanaugh, who is thought by experts to be more…

Kanye to headline Christian student conference

The hip hop star was invited to participate in the Tennessee event after Christian comedian John Crist was removed from the event line-up following allegations of sexual harassment.

Conference leader and evangelist Scott Dawson announced the news on social media, saying: “We were dealt a severe blow a couple of weeks ago when one of our main headliners we had to remove from our schedule due to a moral failure.

“Our team was rocked, but we were solid that the Lord was going to work something out,” he added.

Claims the US comedian had “harassed, manipulated and exploited young women” were made by . last month.

Crist, who admitted to “destructive and sinful” behaviour cancelled all upcoming tour dates as a result.

Following “countless calls” to Christian artists to replace Crist at the event, West was suggested as a replacement.

Dawson received a call from the popstar shortly after.

“I realised that, although this is a worldwide megastar, he was a brother in Christ,” Dawson explained.

“He told me his testimony. He told me his struggles, what he was still going through. He said he’s been delivered, but he’s on a growth journey with Jesus.”

When asked if he would consider attending the conference, West responded: “After prayer and deliberation, I want you to know that I’m not considering it: I’m coming. I’ll be there for your January conference.”

The Strength to Stand student conference takes place on 18-20 January 2020 at Pigeon Forge,…

Democrats Reveal 2 Official Articles of Impeachment: Abuse of Power, Obstruction of Congress

On Tuesday, Democrats unveiled two official articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump that may lead to a full House vote on the matter in the coming weeks.

The charges against Trump were announced by House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler and relate to “abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.”

“Unlike President Trump, we understand that our duty, first and foremost, is to protect the Constitution and to protect the interests of the American people,” Nadler said during his announcement, according to CNBC. “That is why we must take this solemn step today.”

According to the official impeachment article documents signed by Nadler, Trump has been charged with “committing high crimes and misdemeanors,” in relation to his dealings with Ukraine and his attempts to have his democratic rival, Joe Biden, investigated.

“Later this week, the Judiciary Committee will meet to consider these articles of impeachment and to make a recommendation to the full House of Representatives,” Nadler added, noting that the President has “compromised our national security and threatened the integrity of our elections.”

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, the man leading the impeachment proceedings, added that Trump’s “continuing abuse of power has left us no choice.”

The Christian TV channel getting around Iran’s internet blackout

It is believed at least 208 people had been killed in the protests and the crackdown that followed, according to Amnesty International.

Iran shut down internet access amid the unrest, blocking those inside the country from sharing their videos and information, as well as limiting the outside world from knowing the scale of the protests and violence.

SAT-7 said during the nine-day internet blackout last month, which still remains for mobile devices, it provided biblical guidance and support during the time of unrest.

“We changed our topics according to what people were going through,” said Panayiotis Keenan, executive director of SAT-7 PARS (Persian language channel).

“We had people calling in and asking for prayer and any kind of spiritual advice, because as many viewers share during that time, we were the last resource that they had.

“That made us really proud, but also gives us a great responsibility to these people.”

Signal is SAT-7 PARS’ weekly testimony show which involves clips from programmes and live calls and messages from viewers

The wave of protests erupted across Iran in November, sparked by an increase in the cost and rationing of fuel.

In a phone call to SAT-7, Shohreh, whose name has been changed for security reasons, revealed the atmosphere Iranians have endured in the past month.

Church Nativity Scene Depicts Holy Family in Cages, Separated at the Border

Church Nativity Scene Depicts Holy Family in Cages, Separated at the Border

A Southern California church is protesting U.S. immigration policy by displaying a nativity with Joseph, Mary and Jesus isolated in their own chain-linked cages topped with barbed wire.

The target of the protest, according to Fox News, is a Trump Administration policy—ended last year—that separated children from families who crossed the U.S.-Mexico border illegally.

In a Facebook post Saturday, the Rev. Karen Clark Ristine, senior pastor at Claremont United Methodist Church, said she was “stirred to tears” by the nativity, which had been in the planning stages since she arrived at the congregation in July.

Her post included words from a “theological statement” displayed near the outdoor nativity.

“In a time in our country when refugee families seek asylum at our borders and are unwillingly separated from one another, we consider the most well-known refugee family in the world,” the statement reads. “Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, the Holy Family. Shortly after the birth of Jesus, Joseph and Mary were forced to flee with their young son from Nazareth to Egypt to escape King Herod, a tyrant. They feared persecution and death.

“What if this family sought refuge in our country today?

“Imagine Joseph and Mary separated at the border and Jesus no older than two taken from his mother and placed behind the fences of a Border Patrol detention center as more than 5,500 children…

Catholic politician sues Lib Dems on ‘behalf of all Christians’ following deselection

Flello, who was previously the Labour MP for Stoke-on-Trent South until losing his seat in the 2017 election, switched to the Lib Dems after disagreeing with Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

Just days after Flello was selected on 9th November to stand in the same seat for the Lib Dems for this week’s general election, he was stood down.

He was told by party officials that his views on abortion and same sex marriage, shared on social media, were “not those that would be expected of a liberal” and it was therefore “not appropriate” for him to represent them.

Flello told Premier he believes he was deselected because of his religious beliefs: “What is interesting is initially the Lib Dems, having told me that they were deselecting me for my views, and then over the course of the week that followed, they gave me all sorts of other reasons and suggested that I retweeted a very aggressive tweet. But, I have not done those things.

“So, I can only conclude I’m absolutely convinced they are discriminating against me on the grounds of my faith.”

“I feel I have no choice really, but to take legal action against the Liberal Democrats. There is no doubt in my mind, that what I have experienced is discrimination on the grounds of me being a practicing Christian; having the views that I have, which are totally in tune and in keeping with being a practicing Roman Catholic.”

Explaining what he hopes to achieve, Flello told…

The most popular Bible verse for 2019: The peace of God requires the power of God

What would you guess might be the most popular Bible verse, according to YouVersion’s 400 million users?

Philippians 4:6 is the answer. The verse says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.”

What does its popularity say about us?

Volcano burns honeymooning couple

The day’s news seldom lacks for “anxious” headlines. For instance, a Virginia couple on their honeymoon in New Zealand were severely burned by the volcanic eruption on Monday that killed at least six people. Twenty-five people are currently hospitalized in critical condition.

A three-year-old boy whose mother was strolling him through a Manhattan crosswalk was struck and killed by a truck Monday, shortly after the two had finished eating breakfast at a nearby Dunkin’ Donuts. And six people were killed in a shootout in New Jersey yesterday, including a police officer, two suspects, and three civilians. The dead officer was Detective Joseph Seals, age forty, who was married with five children.

Tragedy makes the news daily, but we face more systemic issues as well. For example, a new study shows that death rates are increasing for middle-aged Americans of all racial and ethnic groups. Suicide, drug overdoses, and alcoholism are the main causes, but heart disease, stroke, and other medical conditions are contributors as well.

Clergy are certainly not immune. For instance, a mental health summit for pastors was held last Friday at Wheaton College. About four hundred ministry leaders filled a sold-out auditorium; the event was live-streamed to seventy-seven churches around the world. It responded to a recent report that about half of all Protestant pastors feel as though the demands of ministry are more than they can handle; 54 percent find their role to be frequently overwhelming.

US Catholic priests are likewise dealing with stress, burnout, depression, and…

Stolen baby Jesus returned to crib

Forming the centrepiece of the scene, once missing a blackboard temporarily replaced the model stating, “Without him [Jesus] there is no Christmas” and asking people to help locate the figure and “save Cardiff’s Christmas”.

Staff had said the theft earlier this month was “not really in the Christmas spirit” and without the baby Jesus “there is no Christmas”.

Rev Canon Sarah Jones, priest in charge at St John’s in Cardiff, said it was handed in to a local church.

The nativity scene was raising money for a local church. Last year more than £2,000 was donated by people having their picture taken with the scene and donating to an honesty box.

The model has been returned to his rightful place at the centre of the nativity scene, despite being a little damaged.

Rev Jones told the BBC she was “delighted”.

“The German Christmas market sets out a nativity scene each year which highlights the deep meaning of Christmas.

“We are grateful for the generous donations of visitors to the market and of its staff and we use the money raised to help us to serve the people of Cardiff throughout the year.”
