Tennis Australia to celebrate Christian sportswoman but ‘cannot condone views that fracture our community’

In 1970 she won the singles titles at Wimbledon, US Open, Australian Open and French opens – the four elite competitions.

Her feat has only been matched once since.

Court has however found herself in controversy in recent years.

She became a church pastor after leaving the sport and has been outspoken on the issue of homosexuality.

In 2017, she said she would avoid flying with the airline Qantas in protest at its support for same sex marriage. She also suggested transgender children were the work of the devil.

One of the Australian Open’s main stadiums has been renamed the Margaret Court Arena but some have called for that to be changed.

Addressing some of the criticism, Tennis Australia has released an open letter to explain its stance on the 50th anniversary of her success.

It said: “Australia is fortunate that Margaret Court’s extraordinary playing achievements form part of our national tennis history.

“Naturally, we will be recognising Margaret and her incredible tennis record, and contrary to many reports, there is no plan to ‘rewrite history’.”

It did however distance itself from Court’s religious views.

“We believe any public figure has a big responsibility to ensure their views are expressed in a way that demonstrates respect and tolerance, and does not cause harm to, or degrade others,” it said.

“As a sport, tennis…

Kim Kardashian Resolves to Dress More Modestly in the New Year

Kim Kardashian Resolves to Dress More Modestly in the New Year

Kim Kardashian is already working on her New Year’s resolutions. The entertainment superstar, known for her scantily-clad outfits, has decided to show less skin, according to Faithwire.

Her decision comes months after her husband, rapper Kanye West, made headlines with his conversion to Christianity and subsequent release of his successful gospel album, Jesus is King. Though West has been vocal with his wife over her outfits, he has still given her freedom to dress however she chooses.

“I don’t know if it’s the fact that my husband has voiced that sometimes too sexy is just overkill, and he’s not comfortable with that,” she said. “…But I have kind of had this awakening myself. I realized I could not even scroll through Instagram in front of my kids without full nudity coming up on my feed pretty much all the time.”

While the public eye has been fixed on West’s transformation, Kim has been experiencing her own spiritual journey. Earlier this year, she travelled to her family’s homeland of Armenia to be baptized in one of the oldest known churches in the world built in 303 AD. She participated in a traditional service alongside her four children.

Her new commitment was also spurred on by her pioneering criminal justice reform campaign. In the last several years, Kim has helped free over 17 people from prison who were serving long sentences for…

Pastor who left school over Pride tweet says he hopes other Christians don’t stay quiet

Keith Waters, the leader at New Connexions Church in Ely, wrote in the summer on Twitter: “A reminder that Christians should not support or attend LGBTQ ‘Pride Month’ events held in June. They promote a culture and encourage activities that are contrary to Christian faith and morals. They are especially harmful to children.”

His post led to local journalists criticising him for insulting the LGBT community and to several experiences of harrasment and threats that led to him giving up his job in a primary school as a caretaker.

His wife answered the door to a funeral director who asked what she would like done with his body and the school initiated a disciplinary hearing after complaints from parents.

The pastor told Premier: “I left my role at the school because I found that, going through a disciplinary procedure, I had the usual investigation, which was certainly quite fierce and was rather more of an interrogation.

“In the letter of the disciplinary hearing I was told that it was going to be a case of a final written warning or dismissal.

“Neither of those outcomes would work for me being in the school, certainly dismissal wouldn’t but final written warning wouldn’t either because it would mean that I would probably be dismissed the next day because I’m not going to stop talking about things which are important around Christianity and safety of children,” he…

Falsely Accused of Killing Hindu Leader in India, Five Christians Ordered to Be Freed

Falsely Accused of Killing Hindu Leader in India, Five Christians Ordered to Be Freed

NEW DELHI, November 29, 2019 (Morning Star News) – After spending 11 years behind bars for a murder they did not commit, five Christians in eastern India were finally ordered to be freed on Tuesday (Nov. 26), sources said.

The Supreme Court of India issued a decision ordering bail for the five Christians from Odisha (formerly Orissa) state falsely accused of killing Hindu leader Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati, whose death on Aug. 23, 2008 in Kandhamal District touched off anti-Christian attacks that killed 120 people, destroyed nearly 6,000 homes and displaced 55,000 Christians.

The five Christians remained in jail at this writing. One of the five Christians granted bail this week is reportedly mentally challenged. Because the Supreme Court issued the release on bail, the five Christians and two others freed earlier this year do not have to return unless the high court itself so orders.

“I am really happy that all of them are granted bail,” attorney Anupradha Singh, who represented the Christians, told Morning Star News. “The Honorable Judges granted the bail on the grounds that they have spent over 10 years in jail. Their behavior in the jail was also good, and the same was noted.”

Journalist Anto Akkara, who has been anchoring an online signature campaign at www.release7innocents.com since March 2016, was also elated.

“This is a big…

Former Satan worshipper set for priesthood in Wales

George Bearwood is training to be a priest for the Church in Wales at St Padarn’s college, Llandaff after searching for God “in all the wrong places.”

Influenced by the music, Bearwood joined a Satanist cult when he was 15 and subsequently became a heroin user.

At 30, Bearwood renounced his satanic beliefs and stopped his drug use following an accidental overdose.

Nine years later he visited an Anglican church after hearing a voice urging him to “come to church” and told a vicar “I think I want to be a priest,” according to ITV.

Bearwood began regularly attending services and was eventually accepted to the Church in Wales priesthood training programme in 2012.

He hopes to focus his ministry on social outreach to prisoners, addicts and the homeless.

The tattoo clad punk musician says his appearance and colourful past helps him to be more approachable to those on the margins of society.

“The way I look is useful in many senses. I can talk to people who might be mistrustful because I am more like them – people with alcohol and drug issues and people on the edges of society. I have a lot of friends in the music business and in urban tribes because that’s my background,” he told ITV.

“It’s very important if the church is going to appeal to a secular culture. You have to represent the people you want to include.”

Bearwood is due to be ordained next summer.

Franklin Graham Warns Chick-fil-A not to Drift Left, Requests Prayer for the Company

Franklin Graham Warns Chick-fil-A not to Drift Left, Requests Prayer for the Company

Evangelist Franklin Graham asked his social media followers over the weekend to pray for Chick-fil-A, referencing “concern and criticism” about the company’s charitable giving and upcoming “important decisions” by its executives.

As of Monday morning, the Facebook post had 122,000 likes, 15,000 shares and 15,000 comments. Graham also posted a shorter version of the message on Twitter.

The Chick-fil-A Foundation in November announced a new donation strategy it said will “provide additional clarity and impact with the causes it supports.” Beginning in 2020, the Chick-fil-A Foundation will support Junior Achievement, Covenant House International and local food banks.

The Foundation will no longer support the Salvation Army or the Fellowship of Christian Athletes – the two organizations that were at the heart of LGBTQ protests of Chick-fil-A in recent years.

“Chick-fil-A has been in the news a lot, and every day it seems there’s a new article about their charitable giving,” Graham wrote on Facebook Saturday. “There has been a lot of concern and criticism, and maybe rightly so. For Christian schools, businesses, and organizations, there is always a danger of drifting to the left. It is my sincere hope that Chick-fil-A will not allow that to happen. With the majority of corporate America caving to the LGBTQ agenda, Chick-fil-A…

Stalemate in Israel Folau mediation over dismissal for anti-gay social media post

Folau is asking for AUS$14 million compensation after he was sacked over a social media post about sin and hell.

His Instagram post in April listed a number of sins – including adultery and homosexuality warning “hell awaits” those who commit them.

Rugby Australia claim he had committed a high level breach of his contract.

In a video posted on his website before mediation, Folau said: “I understand that not everyone shares my faith and some find it difficult to reconcile with their own beliefs.

“I want to be clear that I only share passages from the Bible as a gesture of love.

“We pray that we might all find redemption and peace in the words of the Lord Jesus Christ as we head to today’s mediation, we also ask that He watches over us, so that both parties might realise the courage to uphold the truth.”

Mediation will now continue on Wednesday.

Church called to speak up on behalf of millions of people trapped in slavery

The charity is urging “abolitionists to rise up” and for the “church once again to take a lead” in the fight against slavery.

Today, there are more people in slavery than there were in the 200-year transatlantic slave trade combined and every minute two children are sold into slavery, according to IJM.

IJM’s UK CEO David Westlake told Premier it is a multi-billion pound industry: “It is a £116 billion a year industry that we are all funding. We may not be buying directly from slave-owners themselves, but slavery is hidden in the supply chains of hundreds of the products we use every day.

“Everything from t-shirts, to make-up, smartphones, rice, chocolate, and jewellery- all of these can have slavery in their supply chains. Even here in the UK, there are men, women and children enslaved in the sex industry, in nail bars, cannabis farms and car washes.”

Westlake said International Day for the Abolition of Slavery looks forward to “the abolition of all slavery. Decisive action has been taken to end slavery, most famously Wilberforce and the end of the transatlantic slave trade nearly 200 years ago.”

Westlake said the day provides us a moment to stop and think and ask ourselves the question, “can we live up to our forebearers of 200 years ago and bring an end to the slave trade?”

The Home Office estimates there are around 13,000 slaves in the UK, but many charities…

Alleged Sex Abuse Victims File Suit against the Catholic Church, Claim They Were Forced to Take Unfair Settlement

Alleged Sex Abuse Victims File Suit against the Catholic Church, Claim They Were Forced to Take Unfair Settlement

Two cousins from Mississippi have filed a lawsuit against the Catholic Church, after they say they were forced to accept cheaper settlements in their cases regarding abuse they suffered as children.

La Jarvis Love and his cousin, Joshua Love, filed the lawsuit last week in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, the Chrsitian Post reports.

The men claimed former Franciscan missionaries, Paul West and the late Don Lucas, abused them while the children attended a Catholic school in Mississippi.

The men also said West abused them while he drove them to New York for a summer camp and while they stayed in a hotel in Manhattan.

According to the Washington Post, the Catholic Diocese of Jackson, Mississippi offered a settlement of about $15,000 to each cousin to remain silent about the alleged abuse.

In 2002, Catholic Church bishops said they would stop using nondisclosure settlements.

“The confidentiality provisions contained in the disputed agreements were intended to silence” the two men “in direct contradiction” to the U.S. Catholic Church’s Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People, the lawsuit says.

John F. Hawkins, a Mississippi attorney who also represents the Love cousins, said: “These guys have never received anything resembling justice. I’m hoping this lawsuit…

President Trump Pledges to Donate His 3rd Quarter Salary to Fight the Opioid Crisis

President Trump Pledges to Donate His 3rd Quarter Salary to Fight the Opioid Crisis

The White House has announced that President Trump will donate his third quarter salary to the fight against opioid addiction. The pay contribution, which totals some $100,000, will be paid to the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Health and has been allocated “to continue the ongoing fight against the opioid crisis,” according to a government official.

By law, Trump has to be paid while in office. However, acknowledging his vast personal wealth accumulated prior to entering the White House, he has pledged to give away his Presidential earnings to various government-mandated causes. According to the Associated Press, the President donated his second-quarter salary to the Surgeon General’s office.

The President and First Lady have taken an impassioned stance against opioid addiction, vowing to commit huge government resources to tackling the crisis, which claims tens of thousands of lives per year.

On Tuesday, Melania Trump delivered an address in partnership with The Mark Wahlberg Youth Foundation and as part of the administration’s efforts to raise awareness of the drug crisis.

“Promoting education and awareness on these issues will always be one of my top priorities,” the First Lady told the crowd of highschoolers and middle schoolers assembled at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. “I am in this fight with you and I am…
