Archbishop of York awarded university’s inaugural honorary doctorate

The university said in a statement that a standing ovation greeted Dr John Sentamu “who has been a guiding light and figurehead of Cumbria’s university since its inception as he accepted its first honorary doctorate” during a ceremony at Carlisle Cathedral.

Dr Sentamu is the first person to wear the distinctive blue and silver doctorate robe that will be worn by those who will receive PhDs and other research awards from the university.

Dr Sentamu, who became the university’s chancellor in 2007, has shaken the hands of around 33,000 graduates of Cumbria’s university.

Prof Diane Cox, director of research at University of Cumbria, said: “In the last 12 years Dr Sentamu has supported and guided our university through periods of significant change, investment and development.

“He has promoted academic excellence throughout his tenure and endorsed our activities toward achieving research degree awarding powers – successfully attained in March 2019.”

Speaking of Dr Sentamu’s upcoming retirement starting in June 2020, Prof Cox said: “We pay tribute to the vision, enthusiasm and determination he has shown throughout his life and career – he is an inspirational leader and ambassador for young people as the leaders of today.”

The nostalgic Dr Sentamu said: “I feel like a parent watching a child grow. I’m leaving at a time when the finances, the teaching and research, the…

Sustainable Christmas tips, acts of kindness included in Irish Catholic Church online Advent calendar

Archbishop Eamon Martin, Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland launched the 2019 online Advent calendar on the Church’s website.

Now in its sixth year, the calendar offers resources for churches, schools and families aimed at helping people to pray and to reflect on how they can keep Christ at the centre of their Christmas preparations.

The interactive Advent calendar has family prayers and suggestions for #LivingAdvent – acts of kindness that all have been encouraged to undertake during the month of December. The calendar also shares tips on how families can care for creation by having a more sustainable Christmas.

Welcoming this year’s Advent calendar Archbishop Eamon said: “The season of Advent marks the beginning of the Catholic New Year and the time of spiritual preparation for the Lord’s coming at Christmas. It is a time of waiting, conversion and hope. Advent also prepares us for the second coming of Christ at the end of time. As Christians, we must always be prepared for the coming of the Lord – ‘You must stand ready because the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do no not expect’ [Mt 24:37-44].

“Preparation does not happen at once but over time and so each day of Advent allows us to reflect on the joy of the Gospel. Our online calendar is a helpful resource on this journey. By clicking on the virtual doors each of the days of Advent, we are…

Pastor at Early Rain Covenant Church, Qin Defu, was charged with “illegal business operations.”

According to Christian religious freedom charity China Aid, Pastor Defu learned at his trial on 25th November that he was being sentenced because of 20,000 Christian books the church used.

Pastor Defu’s imprisonment comes after authorities promised his family that he would be released if he accepted a state-appointed attorney, which he did.

Third Day Singer Mac Powell Asks for Prayer after Wife Is Admitted into the Hospital for Brain Bleed

Third Day Singer Mac Powell Asks for Prayer after Wife Is Admitted into the Hospital for Brain Bleed

Third Day lead singer Mac Powell is asking for prayers for his wife after she was admitted to the hospital for brain bleeding.

According to CBN News, Powell wrote on his Instagram page that his wife, Aimee, was taken to the hospital for a headache. A CT scan found bleeding on her brain that doctors said could be an aneurysm.

“She is going through a procedure right now to find the problem,” he wrote. “The doctors seem optimistic. Please pray!!!”

Powell later posted that Aimee would be kept at the hospital. Doctors were able to stop the aneurysm from bleeding and possibly rupturing.

“Thankful for many friend[s], family, and prayers!” he wrote.

Powell and Aimee met in the marching band at McEachern High School in Powder Springs, Atlanta, the Atlanta Magazine reports. They have five children, two of which are adopted.

“We fell fast in love with Rudy (Nasser) and we just started down the road of praying again,” she said in an interview in 2016. “[Adoption] changed our world, turned it upside down, and it has been incredible ever since.”

In 2013, Aimee wrote a guest blog post where she talked about the family’s Christmas traditions.

“Every year on our way home from Thanksgiving in Alabama, our children watch The Polar Express on the TV in our 9 passenger conversion van,” she wrote. “Mac and I…

Nearly Half of U.S. States Could Ban Abortion if Roe v Wade Is Overturned, Abortion Rights Group Says

Nearly Half of U.S. States Could Ban Abortion if Roe v Wade Is Overturned, Abortion Rights Group Says

According to an abortion rights group, 24 states are likely to ban abortion should the Supreme Court overturn Roe v. Wade.

The Christian Post reported that the Center for Reproductive Rights updated its “What if Roe fell?” map earlier this month for the first time in three years. The map predicts the moves of each state, the District of Columbia, and the American territories should the controversial lawsuit revert. The categories are “expanded access,” “protected,” “not protected,” and “hostile.”

In a startling move, the Center placed 24 states under the “hostile” to abortion category: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

The updated categories come in the wake of several states passing severe abortion laws, including Georgia’s strict restriction on abortions after six weeks and Alabama’s promise to federally convict doctors who perform abortions.

The map “shows the devastating landscape of abortion access if Roe is weakened or overturned,” said Nancy Northup, President and CEO of the Center, in a statement. “We have analyzed the laws and constitutional protections of every…

Overcomer Opens at No. 2 in Brazil – 100 Come to Jesus in a Single Theater

Overcomer Opens at No. 2 in Brazil – 100 Come to Jesus in a Single Theater

The faith-based film Overcomer opened at No. 2 in Brazil last month, demonstrating once again that Christian movies have a reach far beyond the borders of the United States.

Overcomer finished in second place the weekend of Nov. 21-24 with a gross of $464,273, trailing only Disney’s Maleficent: Mistress of Evil ($540,199) but leading Joker ($384,603), The Addams Family ($318,690) and Dora and the Lost City of Gold ($290,666), according to BoxOfficeMojo.com.

Overcomer was playing in 426 Brazil theaters.

“Many people are coming to Jesus!” Alex Kendrick, the film’s director, tweeted about the movie’s success in Brazil. He wrote, “One theater had 100 people make a decision for Christ on the first day!!! Praise the Lord!!!”

The movie grossed $34,712,782 in the U.S., where it opened at No. 3 and stayed in the Top 10 for five weeks. Although it’s still in theaters in foreign markets, it released on digital platforms in the U.S. Nov. 26 and will release on Blu-ray and DVD Dec. 17.

It was the sixth movie from the filmmaking brother tandem of Alex and Stephen Kendrick, who also were behind the…

Christian charity condemns governments for inaction on climate crisis

Representatives from nearly 200 countries gathered in Madrid for the start of a two week conference aimed at tackling climate change on Monday.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has warned that efforts to reduce carbon emissions are “utterly inadequate”, and global warming could pass “the point of no return”.

Andy Lester from conservation organisation A Rocha UK told Premier Guterres’ comments are the “understatement of the year”.

“The reality is climate change is running away from us in an alarming rate. And the best efforts so far have been woefully inadequate,” he said.

“We’re going to have to do so much more if we’re going to contain what is turning into a serious global crisis of proportions that we have not seen before.”

Lester says it is essential for all governments to “toe the line” and unite in tackling the issue for any significant change to be made.

“It’s about applying pressure to those governments who don’t think climate change is worth taking seriously. Brazil, Australia, United States, India, amongst others”

He added: “Unless we stick together on this, we’re not going to see any significant movement.”

The summit, which moved from Chile following anti-government protests, aims to establish an international strategy to cut greenhouse gases and address the climate crisis.

Lester is not optimistic effective change will be enforced, saying: “Off the back…

Ohio State Star J.K. Dobbins Was Nearly Aborted, but His Mom Changed Her Mind

Ohio State Star J.K. Dobbins Was Nearly Aborted, but His Mom Changed Her Mind

A national television audience Saturday watched running back J. K. Dobbins score four touchdowns to help No. 1 Ohio State crush Michigan, but it also learned how Dobbins’ mother nearly aborted him before changing her mind.

The junior rushed 31 times for 211 yards in the Buckeyes’ 56-27 win over their archrival and currently ranks fourth among all major college football players with 1,657 rushing yards, the NCAA notes.

After he scored Ohio State’s final touchdown on a 33-yard run Saturday, FOX Sports play-by-play announcer Gus Johnson relayed a personal story about Dobbins’ mother.

“His mom Mya became pregnant when she was 18 years old,” Johnson said. “She went to the doctor because she was thinking about aborting the baby, but changed her mind. That baby turned out to be that young man, J.K. Dobbins, who she calls her miracle baby.”

Sports broadcast teams often tell personal stories about a player’s life, but the account of Dobbins had Johnson’s name trending on Twitter.

In 2017, the Cleveland Dispatch newspaper told how Dobbins’ mother, Mya Grounds, earned a finance degree to provide for her son. Dobbins learned his work ethic from her, the newspaper said.

“You have to work hard and do things yourself,” Grounds said. “If you don’t do things for yourself, it’ll never get done. That’s something my grandmother taught…
