Unplanned Takes No. 1 Spot on Amazon’s Overall Best Sellers for DVDs List
Pro-life movie Unplanned has nabbed the top spot on Amazon’s Overall Best-Selling DVDs.
The controversial movie tells the story of Abby Johnson, a former Planned Parenthood clinic director, who left the organization after watching an abortion live. She later became a pro-life advocate and started a nonprofit called And Then There Were None, which supports women who wish to leave the abortion industry. To date, the nonprofit has helped nearly 500 workers exit the industry.
As Christian Headlines previously reported, the movie created waves amongst the abortion industry with nearly 100 workers choosing to leave after watching Johnson’s story.
But the R-rated film has faced serious challenges on its rise to the top. Director Chuck Konzelman accused Google and Twitter of censoring the movie’s ads and even suspending their Twitter feed on the movie’s launch date.
Advertisements for the movie were also banned from major networks such as Lifetime, Hallmark, HGTV, and others, the Hollywood Reporter wrote.
The PureFlix film also faced persecution north of the border, where pro-life advocates fought for distribution in Canada, Worthy News reports.

Kentucky Bans Abortions after Heartbeat Detected
Kentucky has just become another state to ban abortions once a heartbeat is detected, which is often around six weeks of pregnancy.
The “fetal heartbeat bill” was signed by Republican Governor Matt Bevin last Thursday.
“I am deeply grateful to be governor of a state that so overwhelmingly values the sanctity of human life,” he said in a press release. “Kentucky is leading the charge in this vitally important fight for the heart and soul of our great nation.”
Three other pro-life bills were also signed the same day. Senate Bill 50, also called the Chemical Abortion Reporting Act, states that doctors must inform patients of reversal medication abortions.
House Bill 5, the Human Rights of the Unborn Child and Anti-Discrimination Act, forbids abortions based off of sex, race or perceived disability.
And, House Bill 148 looks to the future should Roe v. Wade be overturned and bans all abortions in the state.
Bevin had attempted the heartbeat bill earlier this year, but was blocked by Judge David J. Hale, who ruled the law potentially unconstitutional, the New York Times reports.
With only one abortion clinic in the state, the Kentucky ACLU has also attempted to protect its existence. In 2017, Bevin signed another law requiring a written agreement with a hospital to transfer any patient with a medical emergency. ACLU feared the clinic would have to close should the bill…

August 2019 Book Club Summary: Young Washington
In “Young Washington: How Wilderness and War Forged America’s Founding Father,” Peter Stark portrays a deeply flawed and immature Washington, long before personal growth transformed him into the Father of Our Country.
Stark writes: “George Washington at twenty-one was a very different Washington from the one we know and hold sacred, different from the stately commander of the Continental Army, the selfless president, the unblemished father of our country gazing off into posterity. This is not the Washington possessed of nearly superhuman virtue, who, given the chance to consolidate power and rule indefinitely over the just-born nation, willingly stepped down and returned to a quiet life on his Virginia plantation. Rather, this is the young Washington. But not the Washington of the cherry-tree bedtime story.
“This young Washington is ambitious, temperamental, vain, thin-skinned, petulant, awkward, demanding, stubborn, annoying, hasty, passionate. This Washington has not yet learned to cultivate his image or contain his emotions. Here, instead, is a raw young man struggling toward maturity and in love with a close friend’s wife. This is the Washington of emotional neediness, personal ambition, and mistakes – many mistakes.”
Stark writes that the experience in the wilderness of North America helped “mold Washington as he underwent the transition from adolescence to adulthood and moved from self-centered youth to empathetic adult, from ambitious individual to selfless leader.”
Washington did not come from one of the leading families in Virginia. “The Washingtons had occupied a spot on the second tier of society for generations, first in England and then in Virginia,” Stark writes. Hong Kong’s freedom needs to be protected for Christians’ freedom, says campaigner
In the special administrative region of Hong Kong, there is an increasing fear that China is trying to make the city come more and more under their control.
The former British colony has its own government with separate laws and budget control but still comes under China as a whole.
Recently though, people in Hong Kong say they are noticing their liberties evaporating and want more of a say in their leaders – which has caused weeks of pro-democracy protests.
For Christians, the prospect of China imposing their laws on Hong Kong could also be a frightening thought according to religious freedom charity Release International.
Andrew Boyd from the charity told Premier: “China has been named as a country of concern by a number of different groups. One of the reasons is what appears to be a rise of nationalism within China. We see this in other nations too.
“President Xi Jinping is imposing a policy of ‘sanitisation’, which is affecting the churches. Now what that means is trying to make them more Chinese. That’s what that word means. So, we’ve seen crosses being ripped down from churches and Chinese flags put up and a great suspicion towards Christians and it is this suspicion and this sense of control which we’re seeing reflected on the streets of Hong Kong right now – that’s their concern.”

Women’s Shelter Is Granted Temporary Legal Protection after Transgender Man Filed Lawsuit for Being Denied Entrance
A women’s shelter in Alaska has been granted temporary protection after the shelter denied housing to a transgender man.
According to the Christian Post, the U.S. District Court for the District of Alaska issued a preliminary injunction last week for the Downtown Soup Kitchen Hope Center of Anchorage that will keep the city of Anchorage from enforcing anti-discrimination laws against the faith-based shelter.
District Court Judge Sharon Gleason said in the decision that while preventing “discrimination against protected classes is clearly an important public interest,” the city law does not apply to the homeless shelter.
“Therefore, enjoining the enforcement of those provisions against Hope Center’s homeless shelter will not significantly curtail the public interest,” she said.
She added that “the public interest would be adversely affected if (Anchorage Municipal Code) we’re enforced against Hope Center.”
Katie Anderson, senior counsel with the legal group Alliance Defending Freedom, said she was pleased with the decision.
“All Americans should be free to live out their faith and serve their neighbors—especially homeless women who have suffered sexual abuse—without being targeted or harassed by the government,” Anderson said Friday.
