Gender stereotypes must be banned from churches as well as advertising, says Christian writer

US food company Mondelez and German carmaker Volkswagen have become the first to have their television adverts banned, under new legislation by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA).

A commercial for Philadelphia that showed two dads leaving a baby on a conveyor belt after getting distracted by cream cheese received some 128 complaints from viewers who said the ad perpetuated stereotypes of men as incompetent care-givers.

Volkswagen’s eGolf car advert depicted men engaging in adventurous activities in contrast to a woman in a care-giving role.

The ASA deemed both commercials to be in breach of the new rules that came into effect on 14th June, stating that ads “must not include gender stereotypes that are likely to cause harm, or serious or widespread offence”.

It did not uphold five complaints about a television ad for Nestle’s Buxton bottled water featuring a female ballet dancer, a male drummer and a male rower.

Natalie Collins, author of ‘Out of Control’ – a book on domestic abuse and the harm of gender stereotyping within the church – told Premier’s News Hour this is a positive move.

She said this decision doesn’t mean traditional roles should not be promoted, but that care needs to be taken when they are.

“It’s not about not showing those people in those roles. It’s about when it could cause offence. So, when it’s presumed that men are incompetent at…

Illinois Governor Signs Law to Ensure LGBT History Is Taught in All Public Schools

Illinois Governor Signs Law to Ensure LGBT History Is Taught in All Public Schools

The governor of Illinois, J.B. Pritzker, has signed a bill that mandates the teaching of LGBTQ history in all public schools.

The law, officially titled “House Bill 246” was introduced by Rep. Anna Moeller in a bid to make the history curriculum more inclusive. The bill states that, “In public schools only, the teaching of history shall include a study of the roles and contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people in the history of this country and this State.”

The new legislative measure also includes a section which grants the state education department the power to enforce new rules and guidelines that will “ensure the religious neutrality of the textbook block grant program.”

The textbook block grant is a program that provides “annual funding for the direct purchase of selected secular textbooks that have been preapproved and designated by the State Board of Education.”

In a statement of commitment to the LGBTQ community, Pritzker declared that “the LGBTQ community won’t just have a seat at the table, they will be equal partners in the fight to make equality a lived reality for all.”

He also vowed to “fight back against Donald Trump” with regards to LGBTQ rights, accusing the GOP of having a “bigoted agenda” on the issue.

State Sen. Heather Steans, who also sponsored the bill, insisted that the…

Has anyone been in the same church longer than this woman?

A photo of 99-year-old Edna Emery with Rt Rev. Philip North, Bishop of Burnley has sparked a challenge to see if anyone has been a part of the same church family for longer than Edna.

Edna has attended St Peter’s in the market town of Darwen her whole life, having been there for nearly 100 years. She was baptised and married at the church and still attends worship and other events when she can.

She and her late husband Tommy, as well as their son Michael, have served and supported the church over many decades.

The church recently celebrated its 190th anniversary, meaning she has been there for over half of the church’s existence.

In the first 150 years St Peter’s was known as Holy Trinity Church, until four decades ago when two other local churches, St John’s and St George’s, were closed and the three parishes were united.

LANY Cancels Show at Liberty University Because of Falwell’s 2015 Comments about Guns

LANY Cancels Show at Liberty University Because of Falwell’s 2015 Comments about Guns

An indie-pop band has canceled a show at Liberty University over comments made by the school’s President about gun violence. LANY band member Paul Jason Klein said they would pull out of the show after a Twitter user alerted him to comments Jerry Falwell, Jr. made in the wake of the San Bernardino shooting in 2015.

In the video, Falwell encouraged LU students to carry weapons on campus. He said, “I’ve always thought, if more people carried concealed weapons permits, then we could end those Muslims before they kill.”

Twitter user shared the video and tagged Klein and the band so they would see it. In introducing the video, she said, “I was completely unaware about Liberty University & what they stand for as an institution & I’m hoping y’all are as well. please do not speak here. please do not perform here. please do not associate Lany with THIS.”

Klein responded, “this is disgusting. thanks for bringing it to my attention. lany stands for equality and togetherness only. we’re canceling x.”

Texas Passes Ten New Laws Loosening Gun Restrictions in Churches, on School Grounds

Texas Passes Ten New Laws Loosening Gun Restrictions in Churches, on School Grounds

Just before the mass shootings that killed nearly two dozen people earlier this month, Texas passed 10 controversial laws loosening gun restrictions in the Lonestar State.

According to NBC News, the new gun rights bills were signed into law by Texas Governor Gregg Abbott before the deadly shooting in El Paso, TX that left 22 people dead.

The new laws – which will go into effect next month – will loosen gun restrictions in foster homes, schools and churches among other places.

According to House Bill 2363, foster parents are permitted to possess a firearm for personal protection purposes. The bill asserts that foster parents who own guns will no longer be required to store their weapon and ammunition separately. The bill amends this requirement to allow the weapon and munitions to be stored together in the same locked location.

This practice is one that the National Shooting Sports Foundation – a pro-gun organization – discourages gun owners from following.

Senate Bill 535also loosens restrictions on guns by amending the law to allow those lawfully possessing a firearm to carry it in “a church, synagogue, or other established place of religious worship.” According to the law, the goal of allowing gun owners to carry their firearms in places of worship was to clarify that places of worship are to be treated like other…

Jeff Lucas accuses Netflix series of ‘cheap stunts’ to demonise Christian group

With a tag line “It’s not about faith, it’s about power”, the streaming services’ release premiered on 9th August and suggests that The Family, also known as The Fellowship are a secretive Christian society, working to infiltrate the White House.

In his blog on Premier Christianity, Mr Lucas says: “From the start, the agenda of the film maker is obvious, because the suggestion is that the Trump administration has come about because of the furtive activities of this alleged band of plotting believers.”

The Fellowship is a religious and political organisation that has run for over 80 years and provides Christian ministry and support to world leaders, through weekly bible studies, prayers and forum discussions.

They hold an annual National Prayer Breakfast in Washington D.C which is attended by the sitting US president.

Mr Lucas visited the prayer event in 2017 and says the organisation helps support those walking “the slippery tightrope of being Christian and in politics, as well as reaching out with the love of Jesus to leaders around the world.”

He continued: “As for the Prayer Breakfast, no agenda was shared that might lead to world domination; we ate eggs and bacon, met some interesting people, and…prayed.”

Mr Lucas has criticised the show for using ‘cheap stunts’ to turn the good work of Christians into a dark conspiracy.

“How do you attack a group for showing…

Work to decontaminate Paris streets around Notre Dame get underway

High fences blocked Parisians and tourists from several streets and a bridge around the monument on Tuesday.

The culture ministry said workers plan to use two decontamination techniques.

One involves spreading a gel on public benches, street lights and other fixtures to absorb the lead, letting it dry for several days before removing it.

Another method will feature high pressure water jets with chemical agents.

The clean-up work inside Notre Dame, suspended last month for safety reasons, will resume next week.

Hundreds of tons of lead in Notre Dame’s spire and roof melted during the April fire.

How did Jeffrey Epstein really die? Conspiracy theories and the key to cultural impact

Jeffrey Epstein in 2008.

The two staff members guarding the jail unit where Jeffrey Epstein apparently killed himself fell asleep and failed to check on him for about three hours, according to this morning’s New York Times. They then falsified records to cover up their mistake. The two employees were placed on administrative leave yesterday and the warden of the jail was temporarily reassigned.

Skepticism surrounding Epstein’s death has ranged across the political spectrum, from President Trump and Rudy Giuliani to New York Mayor Bill de Blasio and MSNBC host Joe Scarborough.

“We have to ask who stood to gain from his permanent silence,” said Harvard Law Professor Laurence Tribe. “Who could he have incriminated in an effort to win favorable treatment from the Trump Justice Department?”

Such questions reflect our growing skepticism of our government and elected leaders. According to Pew Research Center, public trust in government was near 80 percent in the mid-1960s. Today, such trust has fallen to 17 percent.

Only 3 percent of Americans say they trust the federal government to do what is right “just about always”; 14 percent say they trust it “most of the time.”

Did the military create Lyme disease?

Conspiracy theories have long been with us

On the recent fiftieth anniversary of the lunar landing, claims that NASA faked Neil Armstrong’s moonwalk received renewed attention.

Next month, the remains of FBI bank robber John Dillinger will be exhumed. For eighty-five years since his death, conspiracy theorists have claimed that the FBI killed a body double. DNA testing could confirm the corpse’s true identity.

Some have questioned whether Lyme disease in the US resulted from an accidental release of a secret bioweapons experiment by the military. And more than two million people signed on to a Facebook event to storm Area 51 in Nevada seeking evidence of aliens. The event was a joke…
