Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg is facing criticism after he used a Proverbs bible verse during Tuesday’s Democratic primary debate.

Buttigieg was responding to a question about how he would help workers keep their jobs in auto manufacturing as the industry faces cutbacks in the Midwest.

“Well, this happened in my community 20 years before I was born. And when I was growing up, we were still picking up the pieces,” he said. “Empty factories, empty houses, poverty. I know exactly what happens to a community when these closures take place. And there will be more.”

“We actually need to put the interests of workers first,” he said, adding that the minimum wage is “just too low.”

“And so-called conservative Christian senators right now in the Senate are blocking a bill to raise the minimum wage, when scripture says that whoever oppresses the poor taunts their maker,” Buttigieg said.

Buttigieg was referring to Proverbs 14:31, which says “He who oppresses the poor taunts his Maker, but he who is gracious to the needy honors Him.”

According to a new law passed in Kentucky, prominent banners displaying “In God We Trust” will be hung in schools across the state, according to Local 12 News.

“Local boards shall require each public elementary and secondary school to display the national motto of the United States, ‘In God We Trust,’ in a prominent location in the school,” the law, which passed in February, reads.

Kentucky is one of several states, including Louisiana, Arkansas, Tennessee, Florida, Alabama, Arizona, and South Dakota, who now require the words displayed, according to Forbes Magazine.

The spike in legislation regarding the phrase likely came from a document called, “Report and Analysis on Religious Freedom Measures Impacting Prayer and Faith in America.” The report, put together by pro-religious groups, encourages lawmakers that “states can and must play a crucial role in protecting religious freedom.”

Because “In God We Trust” is on money and license plates, some lawmakers, according to the Washington Post, have argued that the required signage is about reaffirming history.

Some have stuck to the religious argument. “Let’s keep hope alive,” South Dakotan Republican state Sen. Phil Jensen said. “This is our legislature, our history, a nation that trusts God.”

In an episode of “Queen Radio” on Apple Music, Minaj shared in a conversation with Chance the Rapper that West had told her he had “turned to God” in 2016 after being diagnosed with bipolar disorder, according to Faithwire.

“Sometimes in the music business, we think that other artists don’t believe in God or aren’t spiritual as we are,” she shared. “Then when you find people, because I was just with Kanye, and he told me he’s a born-again Christian now.”
