Faith minister resigns over Brexit concerns

Lord Bourne has been a member of the Lords since September 2013 and is responsible for departmental business in the House of Lords, faith, community cohesion, gypsy and traveller equality policy and the race disparity audit.

The minister worked with religious and community leaders to promote faith, religious tolerance and stronger communities within the UK, such as by doing a tour of faith communities earlier this year (pictured).

Lord Bourne wrote on Twitter: “I have resigned for the first time in my life and it is from a job which I really love and enjoy and which I had just been offered once more; but I cannot accept a no deal on Oct 31st and so I go,

“I have immense respect for my private office, the civil service and for my colleagues and the Lords as well as the vast number of great people that I have met and who have helped me in #Faith, in #MHCLG and in #Wales. Thank you”.

Lord Bourne previously said in 2017 that he would be unable to welcome Donald Trump to the UK on a state visit following his retweeting of videos posted by far-right group Britain First.

He previously served as Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for the Department of Energy and Climate Change, was Assembly Member for Mid & West Wales from 1999 to 2011 and Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly for Wales between 2007 and 2011.

‘In God We Trust’ to Be Displayed in All South Dakota Public Schools

‘In God We Trust’ to Be Displayed in All South Dakota Public Schools

Students in South Dakota will notice a new addition to their schools this fall thanks to a new state law. The law, which goes into effect this month, mandates that every public school in the state must display the national motto– “In God We Trust.”

Governor Kristi Noem signed the law on March 18th. It says that “The display shall be located in a prominent location within each school. The display may take the form of a mounted plaque, student artwork, or any other appropriate form as determined by the school principal. The display shall be easily readable and shall be no smaller than twelve inches wide by twelve inches high.” According to the Associated Press, the lawmakers who proposed the bill believed it would increase patriotism.

Schools have fulfilled the requirements in various ways. “Some have plaques. Others have it painted on the wall, maybe in a mural setting,” Associated School Boards of South Dakota executive direction Wade Pogany told the Associated Press. He also said that in one school “it was within their freedom wall. They added that to a patriotic theme.”

Schools in Rapid City went with a method that the district found to be cost-effective. Rapid City Area Schools community relations manager Katy Urban told NPR that, “As soon as we heard that it was going to be a state law… we started looking at different options and we chose…

Christian campaigner says death penalty is biblical

Mr Barr announced in a statement that the death penalty would be implemented in order to bring justice to the families of victims, and that the five death-row inmates have all been convicted of murder.

In some cases, the individuals have also been convicted of the torture or rape of children and the elderly.

Mark Mullins is from the campaign group Christian Watch and advocates for the death penalty.

Speaking to Premier he said he believes it is a biblical principle: “I believe scripturally it is justified.”

“I support it because it’s in Genesis chapter nine. At the same time that we were given the rainbow as a promise by God that he would not visit the same flood judgement on the nations of the world, he imposed a death penalty.”

“The Law of proportionality – An eye for an eye, tooth for tooth, a life for life. And I believe that in justice and in other areas of the law we impose the lex talionis, proportionate punishment for the crime.”

When asked how capital punishment can be justified within the Christian teachings of forgiveness and redemption he said that the state has been given the authority to take life by God and argued that many Christians would participate in a just war without any moral conflict.

“What is the difference between a just war where life is taken and imposing the death penalty when somebody is found guilty of taking another person’s life…

It’s Discriminatory to Request Transgender Students Change Clothes Behind ‘Privacy Curtains’ in Locker Room, Illinois Rules

It’s Discriminatory to Request Transgender Students Change Clothes Behind ‘Privacy Curtains’ in Locker Room, Illinois Rules

An Illinois government board has told a Chicago-area school district it cannot force transgender students to dress and undress behind a privacy curtain.

Lake Park Community High School District 108 in Roselle, Ill., had allowed transgender students to change clothes in the locker room that corresponds to their gender identity, provided they did so behind a curtain for privacy.

But earlier this month the Illinois Human Rights Commission ruled that the practice denied transgender students “full and equal access” to the locker room, the Chicago Tribune reported. The policy was discriminatory, the commission said.

The commission’s ruling means, for example, that a school cannot force a biological boy to change clothes behind a privacy curtain in a girls’ locker room.

The Lake Park student, a biological female who identifies as male, filed the complaint in 2016 and has graduated, the newspaper reported.

“[Mandating] that the [student] use a privacy curtain when changing clothes in the boys’ locker room is an adverse act and subjects him to different terms and conditions than similarly situated non-transgender males,” the commission said in its order.

Even before the commission’s ruling, the district had reversed its policy to permit transgender students to dress and undress…

Church leaders unite in refugees call to PM

The signatories include 28 Church of England bishops, members of the Methodist Conference, Baptist Church and United Reformed Church.

They start by welcoming the allowance of 5,000 refugees to resettle in the UK in 2020-21 but add that they would like to see 10,000 resettled a year.

It reads: “we are writing to ask for your assurance that as prime minister you will ensure this recent announcement is not a one-off, but rather the start of a lasting commitment by the UK to welcome its share of people seeking sanctuary globally.

“We believe that the UK can and must resettle more refugees. The Refugee Council, British Red Cross and others recently called for resettlement to be expanded to at least 10,000 refugees each year. Meanwhile Safe Passage International have been campaigning for the UK to welcome at least 1,000 children annually from Europe and conflict zones, and have already secured pledges from local authorities amounting to nearly 1,300 places if the government makes a commitment to child refugees.”

The faith leaders call this a “small ask” for one of the world’s richest countries.

They cite the record of the previous government, reminding Mr Johnson that in the first two years of the Vulnerable Children’s Resettlement Scheme, tailored to help children from the Middle East who had been affected by conflict, only 20 unaccompanied children were brought to…

Trump Aims to Protect Persecuted Christians, but Some Aren’t Sure He’s Helping

Trump Aims to Protect Persecuted Christians, but Some Aren’t Sure He’s Helping

(RNS) — Just weeks into President Trump’s first term, David Brody of the Christian Broadcasting Network asked the businessman-turned-politician whether he would make the plight of Christians facing religious persecution abroad a priority of his administration.

“Yes,” Trump said. “They’ve been horribly treated.”

The president spoke about Christians fleeing violence in Syria, concluding: “We are going to help them.”

The U.S. State Department has backed up Trump’s statement, recently convening its second ministerial to advance religious freedom, intended to draw attention to the plight of religious minorities all over the world.

But an increasingly vocal band of advocates and experts says the Trump administration’s policies have failed to address many of the challenges faced by Christians, Yazidis and other religious minorities abroad — especially those in the Middle East. Some argue the administration’s efforts to scale back refugee resettlement, deport Chaldean Christians living in the United States and potentially end temporary protected status for Syrians have only made their situation worse.

“I can tell you they feel completely abandoned,” Philippe Nassif, Amnesty International’s advocacy director for the Middle East and North Africa and former executive director of the advocacy group In Defense of Christians, told

China orders towns to monitor and count Christians

The Communist Party of China has been cracking down on religion in recent months and has intensified its measures by ordering local governments to closely supervise and monitor its residents who believe in God.

Officials are expected to report to the government on a regular basis. The consequences are severe if the numbers appear to have been doctored.

A local official from Henan province told Bitter Winter, a magazine on religious freedom and human rights in China, “the government is taking the matter of religion very seriously now. Every day, they ask us how many people in our village believe in God.

“If we say there aren’t any believers, they claim that we’re concealing what we know and failing to report it. If it is determined that we didn’t report the situation truthfully, we will be punished.”

Local officials are expected to report back to local government twice a day. Another local official said: “It’s like our lives are being threatened. After reporting someone, we have to restrict their movements and report their situation every day.”

Mother Whose Child was Given ‘Gender Transition Care’ without Parental Consent Appeals to Supreme Court

Mother Whose Child was Given ‘Gender Transition Care’ without Parental Consent Appeals to Supreme Court

A Minnesota mother is asking the Supreme Court to hear a case involving the decision of Minnesota officials to provide gender transition treatments for her son without her consent. The child in question was a minor when the decision was made, the Christian Post reports.

The Thomas More Society will be representing Anmarie Calgaro, who went through what Thomas More Society Special Counsel Erick Kaardal called, “A parent’s worst nightmare.”

The case began when Calgaro’s son, only identified as E.J.K.. moved out of the house and was declared to be legally emancipated. This allowed E.J.K. to receive “gender transition care.” The Thomas More Society’s petition for a writ of certiorari said the “care” involved” life-altering elective medical services for gender transformation, including potential surgery.”

Even though E.J.K. was a minor at the time of emancipation, Calgaro was barred from stopping the treatments by medical providers and prohibited from obtaining records from E.J.K.’s school. Karrdal said the actions of medical providers and the school were unbelievable. “Minnesota statutes authorize a county to deem a minor ‘emancipated’ to receive welfare payments to live on their own and allow medical providers to void parental input if it determines the minor is living apart from the parents and is managing…

YouTube bans using word ‘Christian’ in targeted ads

Chad Robichaux, founder of the Mighty Oaks Foundation – a charity providing support and discipleship to those suffering from wartime trauma, was told he could not use the label ‘Christian’ to boost his advert on the Google owned platform as it violated the site’s advertising policy.

Mr Robichaux posted about the incident on twitter, claiming not allowing the word Christian was discriminating:

“We ran a YouTube ad for our veterans ministry outreach for those in need & it was denied for the word “Christian”. Insane! #Censorship should terrify every American; conservative or liberal, Christian or Muslim. This bias is a dangerous course for America.” @MightyOaksFDN

The YouTube team responded to Mr Robichaux’s tweets, maintaining that targeting users based on their religion was in breach of their advertising policy but that adverts can include the term ‘Christian’ in them and still hope to reach a Christian audience.

“We know that religious beliefs are personal, so we don’t allow advertisers to target users on the basis…

Six Reasons a Healthy Culture Is Imperative for Inviting Others to Church

Podcast Episode #557

iTunesRSSStitcherTuneIn RadioGoogle Play • iHeart Radio • Spotify

Church culture is important to the outreach of a church, and subsequently, how much members will invite others. Today we discuss how inviting can create and improve the church culture.

Some highlights from today’s episode include:

  • Church culture is important because it is to be a reflection of the gospel in a local church.
  • If you provide invitation cards to church members, they are more likely to invite others to church than if they don’t have something to hand to others.
  • Having a healthy church culture has much more to do than the worship style of the church being “cool.”
  • A welcome team is a worthless team if it is not a joyous team.

The six reasons we discuss are:

  1. Invitations are natural and desired.
  2. The first-time guest becomes an inviter.
  3. The welcome team loves their ministry.
  4. The pastor is naturally inclined to encourage invitations to church.
  5. The worship spirit is strong.
  6. Energy and time are expended on those things that really matter.
