Pastor Léonce Crump Weighs in on the Issue of Slave Reparations

Léonce Crump, Pastor of Renovation Church in Atlanta, is a busy man. Amid juggling personal and pastoral life, he offers undivided time and attention to address the issues of race in America. From his leadership position in his multiethnic church, Crump communicates with compassion and brutal honesty and isn’t afraid to tackle one issue that is particularly pressing and is dividing our country and the American church—slave reparations.

Crump, a black man whose wife is white, believes that for anyone to tackle the issues of race and slave reparations they must love and desire the different cultures around them. As he states, “I’m 100% sure that we can’t see all of God with our own cultural lenses.”

Crump believes that if we’re going to properly address the issue of slave reparations we need to begin with prayer and scripture. When asked if scripture gives context to slave reparations, Crump provided two examples.

According to Crump, “We find it in the Old Testament and the New Testament.” One Old Testament story that Crump notes as an example is that of Ruth, Boaz and the year of Jubilee—the celebration of release and liberty. Some Theologians believe that during this celebration, slaves were set free and given reparations for property that had previously been taken from them (Leviticus 25:15-32). And from the New Testament, he offers the story of Zacchaeus which tells…

Christian food bank charity urges public to donate food to counter school holiday hunger

The Trussell Trust, which is a Christian charity that runs a network of food banks across the UK, distributed 87,496 food parcels for children during July and August 2018, up from 73,226 the previous year.

The charity urged the public to donate food, warning that summer holidays can mean children missing out on school meals, and the extra cost of childcare can cause difficulties for hard-pressed families.

Food bank use overall increased by 19 per cent in 2018-19 according to the Trussell Trust’s figures, and the charity expects the trend to continue.

The trust’s chief executive Emma Revie said: “Food banks will do all they can to help families over the summer, with many running holiday clubs to support parents who find that their income simply won’t stretch to meet the extra pressure of missing free school meals or paying for additional childcare during the holidays.

“But no charity can replace the dignity of having enough money for the basics.”

She called on the Government to ensure that benefit payments cover the “true cost of living” and that work pays a “real living wage”.

“Every family should have enough money coming in for a decent standard of living,” she said.

“No child should face going hungry in the UK.”

Seven Reasons Why More Churches Are Calling on Interventionists

Podcast Episode #554

Churches who want to become healthier often need outside eyes and a fresh perspective. Today, we discuss how consultants (interventionists) can help.

Some highlights from today’s episode include:

  • Interventions need to come earlier rather than later because it’s often too late if you wait.
  • Church consultants aren’t just for dying churches.
  • The number one reason churches bring in a consultant for advice is for facility issues.
  • Churches are no longer homogeneous and that makes it more difficult to plug and play programs.

The seven reasons we discuss are:

  1. Sharper declines
  2. Stigma is not as great
  3. The issue of crossroads
  4. The multisite phenomenon
  5. Help in interim periods
  6. Word of mouth success
  7. The decline of many denominations

Amazon Prime Day and American ingenuity: Being creative for Christ

Most Americans celebrate ten holidays each year, beginning with New Year’s Day and ending with Christmas. Now it seems we’ve added an eleventh to the list.

Amazon Prime Day began yesterday to national fanfare. The day began in 2015 as a celebration of Amazon’s twentieth anniversary. Research firms expect the two-day event to generate more than $5 billion in sales, up by 50 percent over last year.

Who invented the fortune cookie?

Amazon is not the only technology phenomenon in the news: Twitter celebrated its thirteenth anniversary yesterday. As massive as Twitter’s impact is, the social media giant ranks twelfth among platforms for monthly users. Facebook is first, with 2.23 billion monthly active users; YouTube is second, with 1.9 billion.

Reflecting on the technology revolution that is changing the world, the question occurred to me: How many of these advances were made by Americans?

Scanning a Wikipedia list of “American inventions,” I found more than two hundred entries. On the list are such ubiquitous creations as the internet, the airplane, the alarm clock, the paper clip, the fire hydrant, the fortune cookie (surprisingly), the personal computer, the crayon, dental floss, the dishwasher, the ballpoint pen, the polio vaccine, the microwave oven, the television, the telephone, the electric guitar, and the supermarket.

And Apollo 11 launched fifty years ago today, carrying the astronauts who would become the first to walk on the moon.

What does our country’s technological prowess say about us?

Is shopping our religion?

Americans, of course, have no monopoly on inventions. Chinese culture and creativity predate ours by millennia. The medieval Arab world, sometimes called the Islamic Golden Age, was an era of remarkable scientific advancement. Every nation has its inventors and pioneers.

But it is a fact of history that entrepreneurial ingenuity has been at the heart of the American experience. The…

World’s oldest Christian letter outside of the Bible uncovered

A small fragment of papyrus – which was used throughout the ancient Mediterranean world for writing or painting on – was found dating back to the 230s A.D.

It’s thought to be older than all the other Christian documentary evidence of Roman Egypt.

The letter originates from the village of Theadelphia in central Egypt and was sent by Arrianus to his brother, Paulinus.

“Greetings, my lord, my incomparable brother Paulus,” the letter reads.

“I, Arrianus, salute you, praying that all is as well as possible in your life.”

The letter includes updates on the family and even a simple request for some fish liver sauce.

The document is part of a collection of ancient manuscripts at the University of Basel in Switzerland.

The letter provides valuable insights into the world of the first Christians in the Roman Empire, which is not recorded in any other historical source.

The earliest Christians in the Roman Empire are usually portrayed as eccentrics who withdrew from the world and were threatened by persecution, the researchers explained in a press release.

The letter also sheds light on the brother’s faith, with Arrianus wishing his brother well “in the Lord”.

“I pray that you fare well in the Lord,” he adds.

According to University of Basel researcher Professor Sabine Huebner, the brothers appear to have been young, educated sons of the local elite, as well as…

Anglican Church of Canada rejects same-sex marriage

Delegates narrowly voted down a proposal to add same-sex unions to national Church laws at the Church’s general synod.

Branches of the Church in each province will however still be able to decide if they want to conduct same-sex unions.

Rev Linda Nicholls, who recently became the first woman chosen to lead the Church, acknowledged the disappointment the decision would bring for many.

“The failure of the motion to change the marriage canon will be deeply painful for LGBTQ+ members of our Church and for those beyond the Church who looked to this step as a sign of hope and inclusion,” Bishop Linda wrote in a Facebook post.

The motion required the support of two thirds of delegates from the three orders – lay, clergy and bishops. 80 per cent of the lay delegates and 73 per cent of the clergy voted to adopt the resolution. However, the bishops were two votes shy of what was needed for the proposal to be written into Church law.

Bishop Linda said that when the decision was announced, the only sound in the room was the sobbing of a member from the LGBTQ+ youth delegation.

“That sound will resound in the hearts of all those present as a moment not only of personal mourning but of the mourning of a Church that was unable to find a way to live with differences despite the best efforts of many people,” she added.

The Anglican Church of Canada has been debating…
