Pakistani pastor’s blasphemy appeal postponed for seventh time

Pastor Zafar Bhatti, 56, was sentenced to life imprisonment for blasphemy, a charge he denies.

His most recent appeal hearing was reportedly postponed because the presiding judge was due to go on holiday.

A statement from the British Pakistani Christian Association (BPCA) said in a statement sent to Premier: “The case was moving favourably in the direction of Zafar but Justice Raja Shahid Mahmood Abbasi sought a postponement as he would not have time to complete paperwork before existing travel plans.

“Despite the fervent remonstrations by Advocate Tahir Bashir for a decision to be made to release Pastor Zafar the judge said such a decision could not be made as he was off on holiday and had booked flights.”

The court has set 12th September 2019 for the new appeal date for Pastor Zafar.

The pastor founded and led a small NGO called Jesus World Mission to assist the poor.

A local Islamic leader filed a complaint at a police station in Rawalpindi and claimed the pastor had been sent messages from an unregistered number insulting the Muslim Prophet Mohammed and his mother.

Pastor Bhatti has experienced pressure from Muslim prisoners to convert to Islam and has been beaten several times, the charity has reported.

There are also growing concerns for his health since he has developed diabetes since being imprisoned and experiences heart pain and headaches.

City Removes Church’s ‘Jesus Welcomes You’ Sign to Build Road

City Removes Church’s ‘Jesus Welcomes You’ Sign to Build Road

Employees of a small Texas town removed a prominent church sign on Friday that read “Jesus Welcomes You to Hawkins” in what was the latest chapter in a multi-year legal saga.

The sign along U.S. 80 stood on land that members of Jesus Christ Open Altar Church said the congregation owned. Officials with Hawkins, Texas, though, said the city had an easement to build on the site, according to the Longview News-Journal.

The town is planning on building a street on the property.

The sign was erected in 2015.

“The city employees destroyed our church property, pulled up our crosses and destroyed everything,” church trustee Mark McDonald told the newspaper.

The sign was removed at night so that church members — who often guarded the site — wouldn’t try and stop the city’s workers.

“We’re treating it like a hate crime of religious discrimination that was conspired by the city. We have enough documents to prove that,” McDonald added. “The city was warned [Thursday] by our attorneys not to touch it and not to bother it. There’s been closed meetings, closed records [and] a lot of things wrong.”

A county court ruled in the city’s favor, and an appeals court upheld the decision in 2017, according to the News-Journal.

Police Chief Manfred Gilow said the Texas Department of Transportation forbids any signs that would obstruct drivers’…

UK’s smallest chapel built in old chicken shed

Anne Dobbing and her husband, Peter, created the sanctuary on the Shetland island of Yell, out of second hand and recycled materials.

The Scottish chapel was originally built as a place of personal worship for Mrs Dobbing, whose busy work life left her unable to regularly attend her local church in Lerwick.

Speaking to Premier she said: “When I sit in there and say my prayers, I’m really conscious that it’s just me and God, there is all of this air around me, all of this land and sea and sky.

“I feel very exposed but very close to God in there.”

Anne, who runs a B&B on the island, hopes to use the converted chicken coop to serve and bless the local community by opening the space up for guests to use for personal reflection.

She said: “Some of the people that come and stay here, they come to the peace and quiet, but I sense that some of them maybe not Christian people either, but people that need some spiritual presence in their life, that they would also appreciate a place where they could just be still and quiet, just be peaceful.

“It’s a place that I have made available to anybody really, that stays here.”

A number of images have been placed within the chapel to encourage visitors in their prayer and reflection.

The building recently received a blessing from Father…

Americans Significantly Overestimate the Number of LGBT People in the U.S., New Gallup Poll Finds

Americans Significantly Overestimate the Number of LGBT People in the U.S., New Gallup Poll Finds

A new poll by Gallup shows that Americans vastly overestimate the U.S. gay and lesbian population, a trend the polling organization says may be due in part to the “group’s outsized visibility.”

The survey, conducted in May and released on June 27, found U.S. adults estimate that nearly one in four (23.6 percent) Americans identify as gay or lesbians. In contrast, that figure is more than five times the percentage of those actually identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender in a 2017 Gallup poll. In that survey, Gallup polled respondents who self-identified as LGBT, estimating that population to be 4.5 percent, up from 3.4 percent in its inaugural 2012 survey on that topic.

“Exactly who makes up the LGBT community and how this group should be measured is a subject of some debate,” Gallup reported in 2012, adding “there are a number of ways to measure lesbian, gay, and bisexual orientation, and transgender status. Sexual orientation can be assessed by measuring identity as well as sexual behaviors and attractions.”

Even so, all existing methodologies estimate the actual LGBT population to be far lower than what the public estimates.

“No measurement procedure has produced any figures suggesting that more than one out of five Americans are gay or lesbian,” according to the survey summary.

The latest survey on…
